It was a warm day at the institute when Kate ventured outside -- warm for a January in New York, that was. Nevertheless, it was warm enough that Kate didn't mind going outside without being entirely bundled up in several layers. Growing up in the south could do that to ya.

Now, as she stood on the back porch clad in jeans, long sleeved shirt and jacket, Kate breathed in deeply. She had been holed up in her room for ages, staring outside miserably at the cold and just wanting to be anywhere but there.

But then...then something just clicked. She wasn't sure exactly what it was, but some combination of the laughter she could hear all over the house, and the look in Scott's face when he cuddled Rosie, to just the camraderie of everyone as they even messed around, was enough to make her heart lighter.

For the first time since coming there, Kate was ready to be a twelve-year-old girl again. She didn't have to have the weight of the world on her shoulders, or grow up fully just because she was a mutant; no, the older students had taught her otherwise, Avery especially.

Now, grinning out at the sunny yard, Kate gave a great, joyful whoop and high-tailed it onto the lawn, kicking her heels up and not caring who in the world saw that she'd turned a lovely shade of pink. She turned a cartwheel, flopping over in the middle and landing on her back, but Kate was still giggling.

She wasn't possessed. She was happy, for the first time in months.

Place in timeline: About two weeks after Lesly came here
Time of Day: mid Afternoon

Lesly had been watching the wonderful New England snow fall enviously over the past two weeks. Though Idaho had been known for the bitter cold winters, there really hadn't been that good of a snow fall for the past couple of years.. Leaving everyone cold and bitter.

But Now, it was a Saturday, and the Author had no homework to do. She quickly throw on a light jacket over her sweater, and charged down to the grounds. She had now idea if there were any good hills around here, but she was determined to hit 45 mph before the end of the day.

So...the young woman flicked back into little girl for a moment, as she burst out of the door, Jacket clad, and sled armed. She leaped high into he air, legs kicking, hoping to gain more and more air.Lesly gave a whoop of sheer delight as she arced though the air towards her huge landing. She tucked midair, and brought the sled underneath her knees. she hit the ground a good three yards from the door, and hit the ground running, ur...sliding. It wasn't a lot of speed, considering that the nose dug in, throwing snow before her, like confetti out a tunnel.

Soon, even on the slick surface...Lesly slowed down and friction took over. she glided to a stop a fair distance from the door, and she sighed. It was a start, but it wasn't good enough...

Lesly, looked over, check the condition of the sled she was in, and it was then that she noticed that during her escape from boredom that she had flinged about a gallon of snow onto a poor girl laying out in the snow. Lesly looked over to her left, seeing the girl clear the snow off her face.

Lesly, not so surprisingly, laughed out loud in the joyous chorus of that rivaled the Angels of Heaven. "Oh my GOD!" She said reaching over to help brush the girl off. "I am SOO sorry." Still, though all of the apologizes and concern, Lesly was laughing hysterically.

well, THIS is a way to meet the locals.. she thought, as Lesly realized that the girl's skin had turned a vivid pink from the snow coverage.

"Are you that cold?" She asked, more for her own curiousity, rather than helping her out. Lesly didn't recognize the possible mutant origin of the girls' skin tone yet.

Kate had closed her eyes, utterly content to lie there happily. So what if snow was getting into her sleeves and soaking the back of her jacket? She didn't really care.

That is, she didn't care until a massive amount of snow was suddenly slushed over her. Yelping, more out of surprise at the cold than anger, Kate bolted upright, her pink skin deepening in tone. She hadn't even sensed the other girl coming with her empathy, but that might have been just because she was so absorbed in soaking up the sun.

Brushing the snow off her clothing, Kate laughed aloud, skin still rosy. "I'm okay." She grinned, shaking snow off like a dog. It was only then that she realized that her skin tone might be cause for concern, and her pink skin took on a red hue.

"Sorry...my skin color changes." Kate offered, pointing to what skin was visible between glove and sleeve. She got to her feet, still brushing snow off, and tilted her head. This girl was someone she hadn't met yet. "I'm Kate...Kate Morrison. Are you new here?"

And then was the unspoken question that always followed this question at the school: what was her power? Nevertheless, Kate wasn't going to be nosy, and instead of asking anything else she giggled at the strangeness of the situation. Only at a mutant school...

Lesly gave an odd look as Kate's skin changed colors before. Slightly forgetting where she was, it took the normally witty girl to figure out what the other girl meant about her skin changing colors...

"OH!' she exclaimed as her eyes de-glossed, "you mean your gene...right." She said, feeling awkward at simply announcing the fact like that. Though Lesly herself was a mutant, she had been raised in quite a..least we say prejustice environment. Even when her sister left for the school, her friends and teacher still feeding Lesly the bull$#!^ that most of the Republican party feeds to the public.

Sins of the Father cast down upon the Daughter.

Lesly smiled shyly, almost looking like her sister for a brief second. "Yeah, just moved in two weeks ago. My name is Lesly Cuff." She said, holding out a hand to be shook. "I can rewrite things." She said simply, as a sort of truce between the two. She didn't know if you were suppose to announce your powers like this in first meeting someone. It almost felt like announcing your religion to acquaintances: "Hi, my name is Lesly...I'm a Nazarene." It just felt odd to her.

"I'm sorry about the snow on you...You sure you're not to cold?" She asked, stepping out of the sled and allowing Kate to sit in it. Lesly contently sat down in the snow, right beside the sled. Sure, she was still going to hit that 45 today...but that can wait until after she made sure this girl was ok.

Kate couldn't help but giggle a little at the other girl's expression. It wasn't a mean giggle, but just a genuinely amused one. To be honest, it had been ages since she had run into someone who wasn't used to her powers. Kate generally stayed at the mansion, near those that were accepting and knowledgeable of her powers, and this reaction had become one that was fairly uncommon in her life.

Taking the hand and shaking it, Kate grinned. "Hey, is Anna your sister? I know her...she's a cool girl." It had been Anna that had comforted her that one night when she'd first arrived at the school. Had it really been several months? Quite surprised that it had been so long, and that she was so adjusted to it now, Kate settled back down onto the snowy ground.

Kate's eyes opened wide, almost comically so, at what Lesly said her powers were. "You rewrite stuff?" The girl paused, her mind trying to process this as her skin turned a thoughtful blue. One hand reached out to trace a pattern in the snow, as her empathy activated. Kate nodded her sympathy as she realized that Lesly might not be used to it all.

"It...takes a little time." She admitted, drawing her knees up to her chin. "To get used to the school and your powers, I mean."

Tilting a head towards the sled, Kate hummed thoughtfully. "I'm okay. It's pretty warm today, but...what are you doing? There aren't any hills on the grounds, are there?" The thought of sledding made Kate wish for home, and her mountains. "Can I come?" She asked, after a moment of hesitation.

Lesly cocked an eyebrow at the giggle from Kate. Sure, it was a well meant It just threw her off guard. As such, Lesly was swept up into the giggle and joined her in the merriment. she smiled brightly when Kate shook her hand.

"Yes..." She rolled her eyes, "Anna is my sister." Lesly almost groaned at the comparison. She had spent most of her life living under the shadow of her big sis. "Yeah, she can have her cool moments..when she's not scrutinizing everything." Lesly breathed the last part in an under tone. It wasn't like she hated her sister. She loved her as much as any sister would. She was just slightly brunt from her sister's glory...

Lesly smiled and turned away slightly when Kate nodded in understanding, er, something. She squirmed slightly in the snow, This was honestly her first time ever talking to someone about her powers, asides her parents, who almost immediately shipped her to the Institute, seeing what she could do.

"Yeah, My powers a bit weird." She said in a amusement to Kate's skin turning blue, "But I guess weird is a prerequisite here..." She giggled slightly as she looked around the grounds. Really there was no hill on the ground good enough for their cause.

At least...not yet...

"Here, let me show you." She said, pulling out a note pad she had tucked away in her coat. Lesly sat down and pulled out the pen tucked in the spine. taking a deep breath, she steadied herself, observing the environment, until she found the prefect spot. Then, she let her pen do the work...

Quote:

The hill crested just above the high tower of the school, almost eye to eye with the observation tower. It sloped down gently at first, but then it tucked in about half way though, giving any rider that extra jolt of speed half way though the jump. The fresh, untouched snow gleamed softly in the sunlight, though it was well packed underneath from the years good snowfall. Off to the right side of the the tremendous slide, someone had thoughtfully, or perhaps ingeniously placed wooden boards up one of the swallower slopes, allowing a quick and effortless restart of every run.

The majestic beast...softly called to them...it's precence alone made the two girls bubble with excitement as they gazed upon it's unmarred slopes, waiting to be ridden.

As Lesly was writing this, the famous hill seemed to swirl into being on the other side of the grounds. Light fragments, not unlike what Anna's powers produced, swirled and clumped together, stitching themselves into themselves into the monster hill Lesly had so carefully described. Even from this distance, the subsonic hum of the Strings being plucked could be heard, though it's origin couldn't be placed in any certain direction.

Lesly stood up, and marveled at her creation, almost salivating at it's perfection. She glanced over at Kate, as the girl looked over the sight. A mischievous little twinkle, almost a devilish one appeared in The Author's eye as a thought came over her.

She ducked down and picked up the sled, and as she bolted past Kate, exclaimed "Last one there is a Rotten Egg!"

Kate shrugged a little. She could see that she shouldn't have made the comparison to Anna. "I don't know her really well." Kate amended. "Besides, I want to know you, not her." She grinned good-naturedly, leaning back a little.

"Yup, weird is common. I know Ari can make glass -- she's awesome. And Mr. Summers can shoot lasers from his eyes, and Mr. McCoy is...well, he's really big and blue and fuzzy." Realizing that she'd rambled just a little, Kate blushed, but it wasn't to the extent that she might have blushed a few months ago.

She tilted her head, watching Lesly pull out the notepad and pen. Any confusion over the other girl's powers was soon dissolved as Lesly bent and started to write; a hill was emerging, and Kate watched with an open mouth as it came into being. For a long moment she could only stare into the distance where it was emerging, but then she looked back to Lesly.

"That's what your powers can do???" Kate would have sat there for ages, still marveling, when Lesly piped up with the universal phrase that all kids and adults know.

"Hey!" Kate squeaked, scrambling up out of the snow and laughing aloud. "No fair, you got a headstart!" Despite it all though, she was glowing golden in happiness, and her tone was teasing as she lengthened her stride to catch up with Lesly.

Lesly races towards the hill occasionally checking over her shoulder to check if Kate had caught up yet. She bolted up the wooden stairs, which she put in as an afterthought, but was now glad she put them in. The hill was so steep that she couldn't have gotten up any other way.

The author slipped on one of the steps, legs sliding backwards, and body rotating forward. Instinctively, she rolled to the side, and let her momentum send her off onto the soft snow. Lesly huffed once, blowing the snow off her face. The sled went sliding down the hill, sans passenger...

"Damn it!" she said, scrambling up and back Looking down the hill. "If only I had telekinetics..." She said, as she started to hop/skip/slid down the hill towards the bottom to catch the rogue sled. Halfway down, she met up with Kate who was still making her way up the stairs. "Don't worry..I'll meetcha up top." She said waving the golden girl along. Lesly sighed and huffed her way down the hill, leaning back at a ridicules angle to keep her from face planting herself into the snow again. Finally she made it to the bottom of the hill, and ran across the snow to the sled halfway across the grounds. She considered sitting down to Write herself on top of the hill, but it would have been just as fast to run up there her self. Anyways...too much Writing can give her a headache.

Finally, after Kate had been sitting up on the hill for a full two minutes, Lesly came trudging up to the top, carrying the rogue sled. She sat down with a thump and a flurry of powdery snow. She laughed and blew a couple of the flakes away, watching them swirl in the air like parachutes.

"So, I guess you win..." She said to Kate, in a tame tone. She thrust the sled into the girls arms, "You go first."
