Time of day: Lunchtime
Place in the time-line Sometime the first week of January

God, he had so much work to do. Alex was in over his head with this teaching schedule. He'd never done this before. A whole quarter's ciriculum to be scheduled out and approved by Mina before classes begin next week, and he still has so much to do at the X-Factor HQ. Alister was there doing some work, and Dani was there, probably not doing any work, but that was ok. She wasn't really a member, yet, just a hanger on... A sexy one, but that was beside the point, wasn't it? He shook his head and sighed, damn damn damn. He had to get out of this mood and start focusing.

He couldn't get her out of his head though... her green hair, the slight hum her magnetic energies gave his powers... Damn it. Stop thinking about the past, Summers, and focus on the future. But, man, he missed her, and hanging out with Dani was fun and all, but something was still missing. He sighed.

His lunch sat beside him as he worked on his laptop, black cased fingers flying over the keys, writing his plans for the geology couse he was going to be teaching. Didn't help that he'd been thinking that Lorna was going to help in the class... they were sharing the schedule still. Mina hadn't fixed that. He thought maybe he should change subjects and work on his physics course, but man, he couldn't face that right now. He was burning his candle at both ends, and it showed in his tired eyes.

He sighed heavily and rested his chin on his fist, picking at the supposed hungarian goulash they were having for lunch. He wondered if Pietro and Wanda had had any of this and what they had thought of it. Judging by the fact that the cooks were not in tears, he was guessing they hadn't. Maximoff had his ways, didn't he.

Place in timeline: about a week after Corsair Training Seminar: Labryinth

Jayson walked into the dining hall a little more loudly than she should have. The red head was a bit peeved at a certain aerokinetic so much so that she could barely contain it. No heed was paid to anyone who had been enjoying a previously quite lunch.

Normally, she would have been the first in there. It should have been her who was being rudely interrupted. But, no thanks to her friend this was not the case. Since their first day at the mansion Violey had heard of the giant library the school had confined within its inner chambers. This brought so much joy to the golden blonde that she dragged her travel companion and best friend with her. Over a year had passed and the quest she was forced to partake had yet to be finished.

With her red haired ponytail bouncing madly the stone-turner took a seat across from Havok. She did not even look up at him. By now he should have been at least a little annoyed at her. If not then it would be soon. Spooning the goulash onto her plate she slammed it back onto the table. At that moment her whole angry and irritated air vanished. The plate did not crack in two. This feat was amazing.

Maybe there was something to her training regiments after all. A mouth ago she would have been embarrassed over breaking yet another piece of dishware. To any who had yet to meet her they would assume her odd staring at the plate of food in front of her would indicate she realized that she had just served herself something she hated. But, again, that notion wouldn’t last that long as well.

"The plate didn't break," Jayson looked up at Havok noticing him for the first time. Suddenly her greenish-brown eyes widen as they fell on the laptop in front of him. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you," she apologized as she took up her fork and began to eat. Abruptly, the fork stopped halfway to her mouth as her eyes fell onto his gloved hands. In what would be considered a rude way she stared at them with mouth agape.

Alex had just figured out that the bulk of the first classes would focus on his strengths--- the conversion of energies and how they affect the world and its geological structures, when the table slammed and his laptop bounced, nearly right off the table. "Hey!" he gasped, catching it before it went over. He wasn't so lucky with the goulash though and the spoon flipped to the floor, splattering the jeans and the plaid shirt he was wearing over his containment suit. "Oh, gross," he muttered.

He looked sharply at the girl across from him, expecting to tell her off because of her carelessness, but his words cut off as he frowned at the way she was staring at the plate in wonder. "The plate didn't break," Jayson looked up at Havok noticing him for the first time.

"You have a problem with that?" Alex frowned, "Breaking plates, I mean? Because if you do, slamming them down is probably your problem. I'm no genius or anything, but I can be pretty smart when I have to."

Sitting back down, (he'd gotten to his feet when the initial thump came) he hit save and closed down the program, deciding he'd done enough work on this for now, and pulled his plate of reddish goo towards him. "Looks yummy huh?" he said, poking at it with his fork and not meaning a word of it. He looked back at her and found her eyes latched onto his gloves. "Something wrong?"

Oh geez, this was just perfect. The fork the red head was holding clattered back onto the plate of goulash as it was dropped. Jayson’s eyes were still fixed on Havok’s black clad hands as she pulled her left hand through her hair… her bare left hand. Last spring had been the last time this mistake was pulled. Where though did she leave them?

Finally blinking it hit. After her misadventure with Violey she had to just wash her face. Being mad caused her to forget to take her gloves off. They became soaked with water and soap suds. On rare occasions did the stone-turner carry spare gloves on her person. Add to that the determination of getting something to eat and quick caused the essential part of her wardrobe to be forgotten.

Trying to cover-up the annoyance of not wearing gloves the red head picked up the fork again and took a bite. “It sure is,” Jayson replied after a moment. Remembering the look on Alex’s face as he asked her whether it was yummy, she smirked. “It was one of my least favorite dishes before I got to the mansion. My step-uncle’s goulash made you seriously question whether eating a rock tasted better.”

The question of her normally breaking plates had gone unheard. Even so she felt a need to explain why she had said that and shook the table without meaning too. “I have a tiny,” –she indicated by spacing her thumb and index finger about an inch apart- “Problem about not controlling my strength when I get slightly mad. The poor dishware usually gets the brunt of it.” Hopefully the guy across the table from her didn’t see the double take she gave her fingers. Seeing every nail a different color was kinda interesting. So much so she began to question whether painting them multi-colors was a fashionable?

Unconsciously pulling at the sleeve of her olive green zip up sweater she glanced up at Havok again. “You seem familiar. Have we met before?” Jayson asked before resuming to eat. It was odd but not as odd as the red goo tasted. The cook had added a new seasoning.

"I'm guessing you have some kind of power that keeps you from touching people? Besides maybe breaking their fingers with your superstrength."Alex wasn't certain what was up with this girl. She seemed inordinately concerned with her hands, and his gloves, and because he did happen to be a smart guy, he pulled his gloves off, and slid them across the table towards her. "They're one size fits most," he told her, "So, they'll probably be ok for you. I have like three sets. Once I got here, they figured out what my suit was made of and what the suit did and they made me a couple more. Good thing, because the old one was getting a little ripe." He laughed, covering half his face with his hand, "Wow, good first impression, Summers. 'Hi, I'm Alex and I have BO."

He shook his head and smiled, winningly, "Let's try this again, shall we? Hi, I'm Alex Summers, and I smell as clean and as fresh as a springtime flower. Who might you be?"

He laughed, and as she commented on the quality of her stepfather's goulash, he said, "My real mom, I remember she made macaroni and cheese like no one's business. My adoptive mother, she had this fixation on sardine and mayo sandwiches. I choked down enough of them to fill a billion pizzas, I'm guessing."

They ate a little more and she suddenly looked at him as if he was familiar and it came back to him. They had met before, and the situation had not been a good one. "Oh, God..." he said, "You were at the FOH... when I... I'm Scott's brother. I'm the one... I brought the roof down. Lorna told me that you were hurt during it. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I was... back then, I was something... something awful. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted Scott alone."

He put his face in his hand again and said, "God, now I feel like a real ass."

Jayson nodded, "Yes I try not to break the fingers of unsuspecting peoples." With questioning eyes she watched as Havok began to take off his black gloves. "My powers prevent me from touching people, yes. I've seen no need to try and control it though," she confessed truthfully unawares of doing so. Could it be that she was completely taken aback by Havok's kind gesture.

"Well, let's hope this isn't from your first suit," the red head said with a small smile and a chuckle. "That wouldn't be too great, now would it?" Taking only one of the black gloves she began to examine it carefully. "Interesting material here," she said aloud in wonderment. "I'm a collector of gloves and have many odd pairs in my collection but this is the first time I've seen one of such odd material. They have something to do with keeping your own powers in check. I assume though they are for containment of said powers then for the prevention of touching another's skin. Is it OK for me to wear them?"

When he did finish with thinking over her words and if he decided to take his gloves back, Havok would be at a loss. Jayson had already put them on. She was right they weren't ordinary gloves. But that didn't bother her much. Instead the stone turner listened to the other's introduction.

"I'm Jayson," she said with a smirk. "Yes, I’m girl with a guy's name whose mother had a sense of humor. Nice to meet you oh one who smells of a springtime flower."

Taking up her fork again she began to eat once more. Then suddenly she began to laugh which prevented her to take a bite so she placed the fork once more on her plate. "I happen to love sardines on pizza," Jayson replied. "But on bread and with mayo... that is not a good combination." She paused then spoke once more. "Your adopted mother?" Hopefully he wouldn't be too mad at her question.

"Oh, God..." [Havok] said, "You were at the FOH... when I... I'm Scott's brother. I'm the one... I brought the roof down. Lorna told me that you were hurt during it. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I was... back then, I was something... something awful. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted Scott alone."

Of course she had wished to enjoy a quiet lunch as much as Alex probably had wanted. Sadly it did not seem to be with his own surprising question. Jayson's face filled with horror. Her eyes seemed to be searching in a long distance memory. Maybe she was trying to remember the face of who had injured her greatly. Quietly she sat there her gloved hands clutching onto the table’s edge. But, just as suddenly as it appeared, her horror filled expression melted into nothingness.

"You be here at this table and enjoying such a wonderful meal," Jayson began slowly but with enough force in order to make her words be heard. "Means that what you did had been an accident. Whether or not you wished to hurt me or Polaris is not important. It was I who chose to push her out of the way and got caught with in the debris. I am fine thanks to this healer friend of mine."

Without warning the stone turner leaned forward. Her greenish-brown eyes bored right into Havok's blue ones. "I forgive you," she said. Those words were sincere. "Anyways let's eat and enjoy each others company before this wonderfully and interesting dish becomes cold." And with that the subject had been changed.

She chattered about his gloves and he waved a now bare hand, "I have no idea how they work, to be honest. This whole suit.... well, let's just say its a good thing it works. You can wear them. It'll give me an excuse to come and find you later to get them back." He didn't mean it to sound flirty, or did he? She was a pretty enough girl, though he wondered what would happen if he touched her skin. She was vague.

Intriguing.

When the topic of conversation went to his mother, he said, "Yeah. You know my brother right? Scott? We were orphaned when I was five and he was eleven. State Home adopted me out to the Blandings, but Scott, he was hurt pretty bad. In a coma, I guess, but somehow they told me he was dead... or maybe I just thought he was dead. I was just a little kid." He shrugged, "But things are ok, now, I guess. Scott and I are bestest of brudders again, and all is right with the world."

She leaned across the table and generously forgave him, and he smiled, touched, genuinely touched. Alex reached across the table, and put his bare hand on top of her gloved one, and said, "It wasn't an accident, it was something selfish and misguided on my part. I thought it was something I had to do and that it was the only way to exist as a mutant. I didn't know any better but I should have. I'm sorry, Jayson."

He released her hand and said, "You have to let me make it up to you. You like money? I can give you... no wait I have none." he winked, "But you can come to my nifty headquarters sometime." He laughed.

"Oh, that's too bad," she gave a mock frown. Jayson was really interested in how his gloves worked. "Then if that is the case I would find out how they do. You'll never know if you may need to make your suit yourself one day. It'll be a good thing to know," she winked before taking another bite of the goulash. "I just can't put my finger on it but there's something different about the recipe."

She nodded politely when Alex began to talk about his family. Quite interesting was this. When he finished she smiled at him allowing it to light up her eyes. "I lost my dad a few days before my seventh birthday," Jayson said just as easily if she was talking about her favorite pair of gloves. This was all in the past. "My mom died about a bit after. I believe she was holding on just to say goodbye to me. There was this massive car crash, you see, and our car ran off the road after hitting a tractor trailer. I was lucky to have lived the doctor's said. Well, I then moved in with a step family I had no idea existed."

She blinked and stared at his bare hand a top of her gloved one. What was he thinking? Havok must have been beating himself up inside. He probably still was. And yet she knew there was more to his story. The way he apologized sounded like one of her step-cousins, way too over the top.

"Sound's to me like you were brain-washed," the stone turner suggested with a shrug. "However, you need to stop this melodramatic apologizing. Am I the last person you had to say sorry to? This was months ago and I have no idea how many people you hurt. Frankly, I don't care if you keep it all inside you. Let it eat away at your being. Alls I know is the guy I see before me. You need to be sincerely sorry, which you are," she observed. "Then your apology needs to be accepted and you forgiven, I have. After that you're half-way down the road to recovery. Forgive and forget like they say."

Quietly Jayson fell silent once again. She continued to eat as if nothing had been confessed. It wasn’t as though she was trying to force her ‘live with no regrets’ philosophy on him. Suddenly her eyes once again gazed up at Havok. "You're going to give yourself a heart attack," she joked and smiled. "Now what is this about a headquarters? It ain't the tree house that the catboy has been wishing to build for the X-kids, now is it?"

"Sound's to me like you were brain-washed," the stone turner suggested with a shrug.

Alex sighed, "Yeah, I guess I was." He rested his chin on his fist and dragged his spoon around the goulash, "I was pretty stupid."

"Well, to be honest with you, I had forgotten there was anyone else there." Alex sighed, "I am a selfish man, Jayson, very selfish. I saw Scott because I thought I hated him, and Lorna because I thought I loved her, and nothing more. It's... unfair. I should have been more concerned with you and everyone else." He tapped on his forehead, "Too much inside here, I guess. Too much sometimes."

She lightened the mood with a joke about the tree house. He laughed, and said, "Yeah, I took some curtains from Mina's room and we got some nifty carpet samples from the dumpster behind the mall. I'd invite you up to see it but girls aren't allowed." He laughed again, "No no no, I am talking about my real HQ. Well, it's really just kind of a halfway house right now, but we're trying to do some good with it."

He shrugged, "You can come and check it out if you like. Who knows, maybe you'll like it so much and maybe defect to the cool kids clubhouse." He laughed again. "You have super strength, we could use a tanker." He smiled at her, and sighed, "At the very least, let me buy you dinner. Not much compensation for almost killing you, but it's a start, right?"

Seemingly mirroring Havok, Jayson rested her chin upon her gloved hand. She listened as the poor guy in front of her explained how he forgot about anyone else. Surprising, no if possible the forgetting of others outside your personal life in a harrowing situation was normal. So much so that the red head found herself giving a small sad smile but a smile no less.

"You're human," she said. "But don't keep yourself awake if there was anyone else you hurt. To you and I they're faceless people. Everyone we interact with any single day we leave an imprint. The sad but necessary part of this is we can't focus on everyone. Our world is what's in the line of sight. Anything outside of that is not important. I don't mind you forgetting about me. My boss and Polaris were and still are important to you. That day I was just the faceless person," she paused. Jayson's eyes seemed to daze as though she was seeing something other then the dining room and the one she was sharing lunch with. "That day we affected many people's lives. To think how much, to think of how bad we'll go crazy. There is nothing that can be changed."

Inwardly she was thankful about stating the future tree house as Havok's headquarters. Her actions on that day could be pushed back behind the barrier in her mind. It wasn't as though they were bad. The stoner turner didn't wish to think the 'what ifs.’

"Yeah, I took some curtains from Mina's room and we got some nifty carpet samples from the dumpster behind the mall. I'd invite you up to see it but girls aren't allowed." [Havok] laughed again, "No no no, I am talking about my real HQ. Well, it's really just kind of a halfway house right now, but we're trying to do some good with it."

"Oh, and here I was getting excited," Jayson smiled and laughed. "I wanted to be the girl who tired to sneak in. If not I would at least convince ya boys to let me in or else you’ll be down one less wall."

Now it was her turn to stir the contains of the red goo around her plate. "I would love to see this headquarters of yours but I'm sorry for I can’t join you. I'm an X-men," she said with conviction." However, I do have a proposition for you, Mr. Alex. A possible new recruit that may wish to see your lovely headquarters as well."

"Dinner," Jayson agreed with a nod. "Would be nice."

Alex nodded at her wise words, and he said, "Since I blew up, I've done a lot of stupid stupid things, Magneto named me Havok, and yeah, it really fit. But something I've noticed since this all happened, was that the people here... those who were taught by Xavier... they all... seem to understand a lot more than I can. I've been reading Xavier's words, and listening to everyone talk, and I've been lectured by everyone except the gardener, and everyone seems to get it. I don't know why I don't."

"Oh, and here I was getting excited," Jayson smiled and laughed. "I wanted to be the girl who tired to sneak in. If not I would at least convince ya boys to let me in or else you’ll be down one less wall."

He was happy that she was changing the subject. He smiled, and he said, "Pfft, I'd like to see you try. You think you can take me, you icky girl? Boys rule and girls drool. Everybody knows that."

She proclaimed herself an X-Man and he nodded, "Good for you. I'm not trying to recruit you, honest, I just wanna show off my fancy new digs. Don't tell Scott though, yet, ok, because I want to make sure everything is perfect. I have a lot to live up to, you know. You've no idea how it is to be the fuck up kid brother of the great Scott Summers, Cyclops of the X-Men, the world's most deadly boy scout."

He pushed aside his plate and said, "A new recruit though, that is intriguing. Tell me more, and I will reward you with dinner, dancing, cocktails on the veranda, whatever your pretty heart desires."

"I've never met him," Jayson said giving a small nod. "This Xavier dude my friend, roomie, and travel companion talked of him greatly on our travels before getting here. She knew of this person who supposedly fought for mutant kind. It seemed unreal for someone like him to have lived. She talked about him and this school in what could be described as awe. Yet, it took two years to get here."

Then she smiled. "I still don't understand his dream. You and I are but children within our powers. It'll be a long and very bumpy road before even a smidgen becomes understandable. That day I realized a lot. This is one thing I learned."

As with everything a new topic took hold. This time as Havok spoke Jayson studied him closely. What he said about having a lot to live up to she listened to intently. These words had been said thousands of times before and heard by just many. Even the stone turner wanted to strive to live up to her parents and her friend but to become them? That would be impossible.

"Alex, to be honest," Jayson said giving an understanding smile. "The only person you need to be is yourself. Trying to my boss would only make you his clone. Now that would be hilarious and all but 100% creepy. I mean," she blinked. "I don't think Mr. Summers would like that, even for a bit. So far I like you the way you are. Be happy with who you are now or at least in the knowledge of knowing as time goes by you'll be able to forgive yourself and move on."

A question at that point could be asked. Did she even have the right of saying what she had just said? This was the first time talking to him let alone saying hi. But her words she meant them. However, the red head knew of how forward she was being. On her cheeks a slight blush was growing.

Stifling a cough in trying to cover this fact up, Jayson sighed, "I do know of someone." Briefly she held her right hand so that it hid the right side of her face. This gesture would indicate who she was talking of. Havok should have already seen or at least heard of a person with something distinctive about the right side of their face.

"She's a lot more powerful than I and has much more control than she gives herself credit for," Jayson began again. "Which is why I've always wondered why she has yet to become a Jr. X-men. Since the day she got here her status has been that of a student. I think she hold's a set of beliefs that prevents her from moving above that. I worry for her so I hope this club or whatever you are starting can help her. She is my friend, Violey."

Alex smirked as this girl denied she knew what she was talking about when she so clearly did. He laughed a little when she all but begged him not to try and be Scott. He nodded, "Yeah, yeah, I know, he's one of a kind. I've never met anyone like him, and it is so weird to realize that we had the same parents. So much, I wonder sometimes who we would have been if we were raised together. Would he have been happier? Would I have been less a screw up? The world may never know."

She confessed that she liked who he was, and he smiled, broadly, and teasingly, "Well, you haven't gotten to know me yet. I always did make a good first impression." He frowned, "Wait, I don't actually, considering I was a hate spewing asshole first time..." He smiled again and said, "So, I make a lousy first impression, but one hell of a second one, no?"

She described her roommate, and Alex nodded, "Oh, yeah, I've seen her. She's striking, hard to miss. You think she'd been interested in coming along and checking out the HQ? I'd love to show it to her. We aren't much, but we're trying or damnedest to make some kind of difference. If Violey doesn't feel like she can help here, well, maybe we're the way. Who knows? At any rate, it can't hurt, right?"

"The world may never know," Jayson repeated absentmindedly. "Oh, now that is just perfect. Mr. Alex, thank-you for getting that Tootsie Pop commercial stuck in my head."

The red head shifted her weight in her chair. Then she sighed as her eyes fell to the half eaten goulash in front of her. "I often wonder," she began almost silently but enough to be heard. "What it would be like if my parents had lived? I think they knew I was a special child and tried to protect me. I’m not sure exactly if they suspected my becoming a mutant but there were a lot of secrets I was never told. Like why I have no real last name."

Suddenly Jayson picked up her fork and looked up at Havok. "But to live in the past and ask those 'what ifs' is just a waste of time. So cheer up and be happy that you were reacquainted with your brother. All I can do is imagine what you must have been thinking when you heard he was alive."

"Well, you haven't gotten to know me yet. I always did make a good first impression." He frowned, "Wait, I don't actually, considering I was a hate spewing asshole first time..." He smiled again and said, "So, I make a lousy first impression, but one hell of a second one, no?"

The stone-turner began to giggle. At first she tried to keep her laughter from escaping. Really quick it grew and over flowed so much that her whole body shook in laughter. "Alex, you did make a grand second impression. What about mine? My second impression was worse I believe," she ended with her giggles stifling at last.

"In truth I have no idea what Violey is thinking," Jayson said shifting her focus to her roomie and friend. "I traveled with her for two years before coming here and she still has tons hidden away. It wasn't until last year she told me she couldn't stand people questioning her why she keeps the black and white side of her face open for public viewing. It's not as though she is careless with her way but it's just that she doesn't understand it may be a threat to her life. I ah...," she paused awkwardly.

"I kinda got off topic," the red head said in a forgiving voice. "She and I would love to come to check out your HQ. It's in New York, right? Oh, you think her striking?” Jayson asked. Was there worry in her voice?

"But to live in the past and ask those 'what ifs' is just a waste of time. So cheer up and be happy that you were reacquainted with your brother. All I can do is imagine what you must have been thinking when you heard he was alive."

Alex laughed and said, "I blew up the mall," he admitted, "It was an accidental meeting. I was sulking about being sorry for myself and he and Jean took Rosie to buy a Hallowe'en costume and she got lost. I happened to find her, wearing a tiny red visor like his. Her 'Papa' found us and when Jean figured out who I was... well, I thought it was a trick really, and I didn't handle well. I'd been a mutant for about three weeks at that point. My control.... absolutely nil.

"Alex, you did make a grand second impression. What about mine? My second impression was worse I believe," she ended with her giggles stifling at least.

"You did just fine, " Alex laughed, "A little scary, maybe, remind me never to make you mad, but other than that, you're just fine." He looked at her and she was a pretty girl, young, but pretty and nice, forgiving, that was cool. She asked about Violey and he caught a note in her voice. Was she a little jealous that he had noticed Violey? Hmmm, that was interesting indeed. He waved his hand, dismissively, "She is a striking girl because of her coloring. I don't know anything else about her. You've nothing to worry about though, Jayson, she's obviously high maintenance.
