Time of day: Late Night
Place in the time-line January 3rd after Awake and Confused

Alex had miles to go before he could sleep. It was late and he'd missed his supper, having eaten nothing since the sandwich he had with Alister. He dragged his sorry carcass home, parking his bike crookedly in the driveway, certain that Scott was going to come out in the morning and yell at him for not putting it away properly, but whatever. It wasn't going to rain, and with all the heat based, and telekinetic and superfast mutants around, the driveways were free of snow. Besides, he was just beat. He really was.

But, he couldn't stop yet. He had to do this one last thing before he crawled into his bed and slept for five hours, and the day started again. He half hoped Hank wouldn't be down here so that he could skip it and talk to him in the morning, but the light was on in the labs on the other side of the infirmary and could see hints of blue fur floating in the air as the bestial doctor did whatever it was he was doing.

Alex knocked on the door to let Hank know that he was there. He leaned heavily on the doorframe and said, "Hey, McCoy, can I ask you something without it getting back to my brother?"

Time of day: Late Night
Place in the time-line January 3rd...a few weeks after Christmas....

As always, Hank was in the lab. This time, instead of concocting a new cranberry sauce formula, he was looking at the effects that medicine had on mutant antibodies. The great man was leaning over the microscope silently, clawed -- but neatly trimmed -- fingers twisting the dials carefully.

Alex's appearance, however, made him look up -- and wince in pain, because he hadn't realized just how long he'd been standing there, hunched over the microscope like that.

Alex certainly didn't look happy, and as Hank stretched out his back and arms, accompanied by the sound of bones cracking back into place, his furry blue eyebrows furrowed.

"Certainly." Admittedly, he was curious as to just what was so secretive, but Alex's appearance made him withhold questions. Instead, he gestured to a nearby lab chair, glancing quickly to it to make sure that there was no shedded fur on it. He was always careful to brush his fur and get all the dead fur out, but it never took care of it all.

Settling into his own seat, Hank removed his delicate reading glasses from the end of his nose, and tucked them carefully into the breast pocket of his lab coat.

"You should know that I am a closed book. I do not repeat that which people tells me." Hank admonished gently, smiling. "I have no intention of telling Scott a word. Now, as many so colloquially put it, 'shoot'."

Hank stood up and Alex could hear the creaking and the popping of his bones. "Long day, huh? Same here. What time is it? I can't wear a watch anymore." He checked the clock on the wall and groaned, "Ugh, I'll make this quick because if I don't get some sleep soon, I am going to drop."

He took a deep breath and said, "Um... so, you know how I'm not really cut out for this full time devotion to Xavier's dream, like my brother. Scott... he's... God, I think I would have gone nuts if I had to put up with all the stuff that Scott put up with... But.... Well, I want to help somehow, you know? And, Pietro, Wanda, they sort of feel the same, so we got this idea, to... branch out, and..."

He drummed his fingers on his knee, nervously, and ran the other hand through his hair, a habit he'd picked up since adopting the containment suit. The hood squashed his hair down so he'd gotten used to having to fluff it back up. "I took the money out of my accounts, every cent I had, and I had a bit. My dad... my adopted dad... he took the trust fund I was left by my real parents and invested it, plus I got a lot of grants and awards from college... Well, I bought a building in Mutant Town... and we've been trying to rescue some people, like us, kids, used, abused, manipulated, in trouble. We have two kids living there now, Dani... she used to be Brotherhood with us, and a kid named Alister with some kind of monster summoning power, I don't understand it, entirely. But, both of them... I was kind of hoping, maybe you'd come out there and take a look at them? Make sure there's nothing they need... you know what I mean?"

He rubbed his temples and muttered, "I'm so tired I don't even know if that makes sense. X-Factor... that's what Pietro named us... we're just trying to help and these kids need more help than I'm sure I know how to give them."

Hank leaned back thoughtfully, just as much to stretch his back out as to get more comfortable so that he could better answer the question. With head tilted down to hear Alex speak, Hank nodded his head mutely, understanding.

"It is hard, finding an ideal area to help out with. After all," Hank had to smile, despite the seriousness of the situation. "Everyone is different." He waved a blue furred hand, then let it fall gently on Alex's shoulder. "None of us expect you to be a clone of Scott...heaven forbid that you were."

Another grin. Of course Hank loved Scott just as much as everyone else, but on the other hand Scott's attitudes towards everything were legendary.

"But what you did...that was in the true spirit of Xavier. To be perfectly honest, Charles would have been extraordinarily proud." Hank tilted his head, beaming. "This is exactly how he started, do you know that?"

Hank leaned back again, perching his feet on the lowest rung of his chair comfortably. "Of course I would be delighted to help. I will most definitely come within this week...these experiments may wait." He nodded towards the boxes of slides waiting for his inspection. "And if you need anything more, even an advocate, please let me know."

Alex smiled tiredly as Hank reassured him that no one expected him to be Scott and he smiled, "Thank God. I love him but he's... I don't know if he ever spoke about our Dad. He was a air force test pilot, a major, I think. He was... I really don't remember much, but I remember when he was strict, or solving a problem... he was just like Scott. By the book, but still kind of knowing how to make the rules bend just enough... I don't know, I'm talking out of my head. Thanks, though, you don't know what it means to me."

Closing his eyes, and tilting his head back, Alex sighed, "I came here completely fucked up, Dr. McCoy. I was so angry, so angry at everything." He sighed, "I'm not happy right now, but I don't want to blow up every time something annoys me, so I suppose that's a step in the right direction."

His eyes opened when Hank told him that the Professor would have been proud, and he tilted his head up, "Really? I mean I never met him, but... Thanks, Dr. McCoy, thanks a lot." He smiled and got to his weary feet as Hank agreed to help him out with the kids. "Thanks for that too. There's so much involved with being a team leader. I just hope I'm going to be able to help some people. Maybe then everything I've done since 'evolving,' will have some kind of purpose."

He yawned and said, "Ugh, I have like 5 hours to sleep before I have to head back out there. I should've spent the night but with Dani there, I don't get much sleep."

Hank nodded slowly, resisting the urge to bite a trimmed claw. "Both of you have real strength -- amazing strength really. But I believe that Scott, because he was old enough when the plane crashed, responded to it in a different way. Order was something that aided him in a way that it could not aid you." Here Hank gave a small smile.

"As said, what works for one man may not for another." He rubbed his face with both hands, overjoyed at the exhaustion he felt that he could have never felt behind a desk signing papers in Washington, D.C.

"You are most definitely making progress, and trying, and that is really what counts." Hank resisted the urge to sigh at himself; he sounded like a greeting card. Nevertheless, he continued. "Rosie adores you, and I don't think that she would adore anyone haphazardly after what her birth parents put her through."

Once again Hank let one hand fall on the man's shoulder, comforting. "You are doing an excellent job. As a physician, however, the only thing I might caution you against is sacrificing entirely your health. You have to sleep and take care of yourself, not at the expense of those you have taken in, but still as a priority."

He gave Alex a long, serious look that conveyed many things -- things of pride and seriousness -- before he turned away. "Go on, scat, youngster. Catch up on your sleep. I shall be there soon to look over your new protogee's. Do not be afraid to call."

"Both of you have real strength -- amazing strength really. But I believe that Scott, because he was old enough when the plane crashed, responded to it in a different way. Order was something that aided him in a way that it could not aid you."

Alex smiled and nodded, "He saved my life." His voice was filled with an awe that was so different from the bitterness that had coated every syllable on his first arrival. It was clear that Alex had never really hated his brother, quite the contrary. He idolized Scott, had since even before the crash, and there was that bit of admiration that made it so very obvious that Alex was trying to fill the shoes of a man who was far far more than what reality showed him to be. He had this idea of Scott, and it was far beyond what Scott would ever consider himself. "He saved my life, and I have a lot to repay him for."

Hank commended him on his efforts and mentioned Rosie and Alex laughed, "I adore Rosie with all of my heart, sir. She makes me miss my sister's boys, and I would lay down my life for her if it ever came to that, but she is likely to go and hug Magneto if he happened to float by. She's a cutie pie, but she's not the best judge of character."

Orders came them to catch up on his sleep, and frankly, Alex was too tired to argue with it. He gave a small smile and said, "Well, who am I to ignore Doctor's orders? Good night, Sir, thanks for the help, and the talk. I sometimes think everyone here is waiting on pins and needles for me to fall. You never did that, even when you saw what I... what I let happen to Scott. Thank you so much for it, sir."

Anne Lee

Place in timelines: January 3rd...a few weeks after Christmas....

It was late and probably after curfew. What time was curfew anyways? Really, the small blonde didn't care about knowing because she rarely would even follow it if she did. Lately all-nighters were being pulled. For hours she would be bent over her laptop typing away at non-sense.

Now though Anne Lee was rushing down into the sub-levels of the institute. There was a person she was looking for. He wasn't in his room which meant he had to be in his lab. Her foot falls were heavy against the floor so the teachers still awake would know that a student was up and running to who knows where. Trouble was one thing that wasn't sought but surely it would be found.

Coming to the infirmary the small blonde slowed and began to tip-toe. Alerting Akito that someone was up when they weren't supposed would be horrible. It wasn't as though she would get punished right then and there. It was... it was... Well, truth be told, she never kept her appointments when her wrist had broke and he probably had something to say about that. Not now, though, this search needed to be completed.

OK, now that was a close call. Quietly turning the next corner Anne Lee cleared through the infirmary. And... And… yes, his light was on. The small blonde's pace quickened again. She was now at a half run. The laptop tucked under her arm began to slip. Looking down she caught it before it fell to the ground. Whew, that was close...

"I'm sorry sir," the small blonde looked up at the man who had been walking towards the door moments before. Smart her for she hadn't been looking where she was going and of course, she ran into someone she had yet to meet. "Um, I'm looking for someone," Anne Lee stuttered. "Ah, Mr. McCoy, are you there? I have a question about my Sociology paper I'm writing." On her face was a shy smile of innocence. Maybe this guy would believe her. "Oh, my laptop kinda dropped near your foot."

Hank couldn't help but grin, softly. He knew just how hard it was for Alex to talk about the incidents that he had seen, about the sacrifices that both his brother and his parents had made, and the mistakes as well. Hank did have a psychiatry degree, true, but it didn't take a liscensed practitioner to see exactly what Alex was feeling.

"You won't fall, I guarantee it." He smiled in farewell, and had turned back to his microscope when a thump and a young voice made him glance up. Ah, Anne Lee. By the look on her face, Hank suspected that she was trying to be innocent. Hmm...what was that about?

"Miss Lee." Hank greeted warmly, sliding back off his lab stool, glancing up at the clock as he did. Good grief...how could it already be so late? "What brings you down into the bowels of the mansion this late at night?"

Then...aha, a problem. Hank's brow furrowed, wondering more at why the girl would come to him about this problem now. Yes, something definitely had to be up. He glanced over to Alex. "Bed." He ordered shortly, grinning to expose his pointed teeth, a bit playfully. "You are very much needed now, and you cannot possibly help with a lack of sleep."

Alex saluted, and he nodded, "Bed, yes, bed good." He smiled, "Thanks, Dr. McCoy, I hope you're right. I'm... a bit of a fuck up, but I'm trying. You have no idea how hard this all is. Less than a year ago, the only thing I had to worry about was learning how to ride a camel in Egypt." He yawned and said, "Bed. I'm going."

He smiled again and gave a little wave. He wasn't a bad kid, that was very clearly. He was a frightened, easily overwhelmed, emotional kid, but not a bad one. He'd been pampered, protected and sheltered from the struggles in life, shielded behind his adoptive family's strange bubble of molding him as a replacement... It kept him from knowing the poverty and unhappiness his brother had known before being brought here, by Charles Xavier. Life had been easy for Alexander Phillip Summers, far easier than he had ever understood before now, his discontent of his own making.

It was taking seeing people who had really suffered, at his hand or at others to make him really understand how lucky he'd had it.

Turning, he almost bumped into the young girl. She dropped her laptop and Alex bent to pick it up, "Here you go," he said, handing it to her. "Sorry, I hope I didn't break it."

Hank shooed him on, and Alex said, "I'm going, I'm going." He winked at the young girl, "A guy could get to feeling very unwanted around here."

Anne Lee looked up at Havok still wearing the look of innocence. She hadn’t meant to run into him. Hmm… did she run into him or the wall? Ahh… it didn’t matter. She justed wanted to talk to Mr. McCoy and that was all. Meeting a new person, especially so late at night, was not what she wanted.

“Oh, no it is OK Mr. Havok,” the small blonde smiled. “There is no harm done. The most common damage of dropping a laptop is the breaking of the screen. If it did break, I doubt it would, it’s an easy fix. It’s not as though it fell out of a tree.” Man, was she being slightly talkative with a guy she shouldn’t recongionize.

Actually, how should a student such as herself know who he was? It’s true one could blame rumors but they usually left out details. A name or what the person looks like is what is told. It’s one or the other and not both. Either way her smile lightened. “You’re Alex Summers, Mr. Summer’s brother,” she said not saying anymore.

"Miss Lee." Hank greeted warmly, sliding back off his lab stool, glancing up at the clock as he did. Good grief...how could it already be so late? "What brings you down into the bowels of the mansion this late at night?"

Miss Lee, now she liked that. There was no wondering why the Beast hadn’t called her by Austin. Anne Lee blinked a few times as though she didn’t know the time. “I’m sorry,” she began. “Am I bothering you? I believe coming back when it is day light out might be in order.” Though this was probably the best idea the small blonde remained still. Her eyes were averted in the proper way a student’s would be if they had been caught out of bed past curfew like she had just been. However, in her dark brown eyes a look shared with her brother was reflected; a look that the small one may cause some mayhem soon.

Alex had agreed to head to bed. Taking a second look, studying him, Anne Lee saw the blonde man did really look tired. Then he winked at her. Instead of flushing or turning away the small blonde just kept a calm expression. “It’s not as though we are unwanted but if we want to be wanted here,” she stated coolly.
