The sign read – NO MEN PAST THIS POINT – written in big block letters on white paper. It was a sign that meant business. A temporary heavy curtain had been stretched across the staff/faculty floor, separating the Guy Zone from the Girl Zone. Jean’s and Mina’s family suites were the main staging areas with Ari commandeering Warren’s as a secondary outpost and place put things out of the way. As is often the case with events like these, the men were displaced, shuffled to the other end of the hall, taking refuge in one of the spare rooms, and generally treated like second-class citizens; after all, they only have to put on suits.

The sign was pinned at eye-level on the curtain and conveyed the impression that for this day, battle lines had been drawn and that any man caught in Girl Country would be considered a spy and given no mercy.

It would’ve been impossible to find a more hectic place on the Xavier Estate than that section of the mansion. With all the coming and going, the doors of the suits were eventually just left open as the half dressed and half made-up women wandered in and out of the rooms.

Calls such as: Has anyone seen my shoe, it was just here… no, it looks just like this one but… you know, for my other foot, and … argh, my strap broke, does anyone have a safe pin?... Can anyone create a safe pin?, were heard coming from the forbidden country beyond the curtain.

Ari let out a huge sigh as she dropped dramatically onto the edge of Warren's bed, her eyes on the ceiling, reveling for only a moment in the quiet before the storm. And it was only a moment she was allowed, before the women on the staff floor began getting ready for the upcoming ceremony.

The brunette had never really realized it, but the sound of a lot of women talking...it reminded her idly of hens. It was a good thing Ari loved a lot of the women walking around complaining about shoes and dresses and make up and hair. Otherwise, she might have wanted to escape to her room, put some music on, and take a nap until it was actually time for the ceremony to start. Being maid of honor meant there was no time to nap though, however much she would've liked the extra sleep. At least she'd been able to talk to Warren for a few moments earlier, thankfully using the excuse of informing him about moving Jean to the family suite, just to hear his voice.

Ari felt slightly tired, the fun night before still lingering on her body. She was up earlier than she would normally be after hitting the clubs, and by her calculations she should have still been sleeping for a few more hours. It was the wedding day though, the one they'd been planning tirelessly for for months, and thus she'd been required to get up early. She still had work to do, if it was possible. She'd just finished making sure decorations were in place in the gardens, but she still had to make sure that everyone knew what they needed to do, that everyone was dressed and made up and accessorized... Truth be told, Ari couldn't wait until it was over.

Although she was still quite young, she knew from this experience that if she ever got married, she'd be doing it in an informal setting. A romantic little clearing in the woods, with only her closest family and friends there to witness it, her groom, and a priest. Afterward, they could have a party if they chose. But things like place settings, invitations, dress picking...she could do without all of that. Jean and Scott deserved a beautiful wedding though, and hopefully they'd be pleased with how much everyone had put into it.

Ari finally sat up and brushed her bangs out of her eyes. Being in Warren's room usually left her feeling more relaxed than she was currently, and she couldn't resist a private chuckle at the fact that his room had become one of the 'stations' for getting ready. Mostly though, the women on the floor were congregating in Jean's suite or in Mina's.

She wasn't anywhere near dressed, still wearing jeans and a hoodie, her dark hair twisted up into a messy ponytail, thinking that when she had three hours left, instead of five, she would start to get dressed.

Getting up, she carefully stepped over a slew of crayons and coloring books she'd brought in to occupy Rosie and Meghan while their mothers got ready. In Ari's hands, she held a list of things that needed to get done. Oddly enough, for her artist mentality of doing things at the last minute and however she felt like it, lists seemed to work for her. Jean was counting on her, and Ari refused to let anything go wrong if she could help it.

One of the most important bits on her list? Check on the bride-to-be. Ari exited the room and headed through the hall towards the Summer's suite, her eyes down on her list when an unexpected flash of color caught her eye. Ari's dark eyebrows knit together, her eyes turning towards the flash of red. It was gone though and Ari wondered briefly if she'd imagined it. Then she spotted it again, beneath a side table... a rose. A...moving rose?

For a moment, Ari simply stared. However, living at the mansion for years and experiencing more than one odd thing, blue ducks and shared dreams sprang to mind, Ari didn't question strange things happening anymore. Moving towards the rose, she crouched and reached out a hand, picking it up as it wiggled in her grasp.

Ari grinned, tucking the list under the crook of her arm as she gently inspected the rose between her fingertips. It was one of Wanda's creations no doubt, as she had yet to see Avery or Evvy create animated flowers. She was reminded of the Disney movie 'Alice in Wonderland' and almost willed the rose in her hand to begin singing to her. "How about it, huh? Sing me a song?" she whispered, running a finger softly against one of its vibrantly red petals.

While the others were running around trying to find all their missing accessories, Mina was huddling miserably on the couch in her room, hoping and praying that the coffee and aspirin were going to kick in at any moment. God, what had she done last night? She only remembered bits and pieces among the endless rounds of shots people had kept passing around. It was like her teenage years all over again, and that was not necessarily a good thing.

A quick glance at the clock told her that she didn't have anymore time to wallow in her misery. She'd drunk too much, she knew it, and she was going to deal with the consequences. It was time to get going, headache or no headache, and she picked herself up off the couch with a small groan of protest.

That was the last time she was going to party with Jean.

40 minutes later she had showered, dried her hair, and put it up into velcro rollers. No super-complicated hairdos for her, no way. A few curls and she'd be done. Now, time to check on the bride...it would do for Jean to have a meltdown so close to game time.

She ducked out of her room and into Jean's, pausing just inside the door as she spotted Jean's camera sitting on a table nearby. Thinking perhaps it might fill in a few blanks in her fuzzy mind she picked it up and began clicking through the pictures, her eyes going wide a moment later.

Oh, Logan was going to kill her.

"Jean?" she called, her voice raised in a small bit of alarm as she moved further into the suite. "Did I...did I make out with a stripper last night?"

JP between Rosie and Meghan

"Mama, what's a stripper?" Meghan bounced into the room, followed closely by Rosie. Both little girls were still in their pajamas -- it was stupid to dress them when the wedding wasn't for another few hours; small children and formalwear didn't mix, not for that long -- and both clutched coloring books and crayons in their hands.

"Betcha its a superhero!" Rosie exclaimed, and both little girls dissolved into giggles at the thought, though they didn't know quite what the phrase 'made out' meant -- maybe it had something to do with makeup, but that really didn't matter.

Rosie peered speculatively around the suite, curious. Jean had explained to her what marriage meant, and she was eager to see her mama in the white dress -- even though the kissing part was kinda icky. Oh well. She got to wear a pretty dress, and dance, and eat cake until she puked her brains out.

Meghan, on the other hand, had been to other weddings before, and she was -- at least, in Rosie's view -- an old hand at the process. Now Meghan wiggled her way onto the couch, grinning happily as she waved her coloring book at Rosie. "There's gonna be lots've kissing." She warned as Rosie pulled herself up onto the couch. Both of them made faces.

"Mama!" Rosie called. "I wanna see your's dress!"

Jean stood under the hot spray of her own shower, rubbing her face with her hands, as though that could erase the memories of last night… but no, forgetting would be a godsend. She groaned quietly under the stream of water, not like the groans that Scott could elicit from her but the groan of a zombie just back from the dead.

From the other side of her door, Mina called out, admittedly not very loudly, "Jean?... Did I...did I make out with a stripper last night?"

Jean stepped out of the shower, running the events of the previous night through her mind. She looked down at her hands, moving one finger after another as she counted under her breath. The thing about reputable people finally letting loose, was that it was like a dam bursting, engulfing everything in sight.

“… A stripper? Uhm… no…” Jean emerged into her bedroom, tying the belt of her plain bathrobe.

From the other side of the door, Jean heard Meg’s voice pipe up, "Mama, what's a stripper?"

Jean closed her eyes and her damp hair flopped in front of her face. “Oh dear…”
:: You and your big mouth :: she thought to Mina, only belatedly wondering if her friend’s mind was capable of receiving the thought after last night. :: Sorry :: she whispered.

"Mama!" Rosie called. "I wanna see your's dress!"

Jean opened the door, “Sorry, Rosie-Posie, hair first… then dress. Where’s Ari? We don’t want to leave things too late.” Jean reached for Rosie hugging the little girl to her legs. To her dismay, she noticed her hands were faintly trembling, and for the life of her, she couldn’t understand why.

Much to Ari's dismay, the little rose in her hand did not suddenly belt into song. Still though, Ari was quite taken with the flower, its little petals wiggling and miming to her in its own magnificent way. Petting its silky petals softly, which the rose seemed to be enjoying, Ari moved into Jean's room, her eyes instantly landing on the women and little girls. A bright smile appeared on her face, her sleep deprivation momentarily forgotten. It was a good thing she was underage, for she had not drank excessively like some of the others.

"Morning lovely ladies," she said, bending to grab Rosie and Meghan into a hug. Passing next to Mina, Ari glanced into the camera window and shook her head gravely, teasingly pretending the Headmistress was in trouble, "Oooh Minaaa." And well, judging from the photo and Ari's cluttered memories of the night before, Mina might very well be.

"Look what I found--" she said, holding up the rose, which seemed suddenly shy at being under the spotlight. Ari chuckled softly and placed it down gingerly on Jean's desk. Strangely enough, it didn't run off at the given opportunity, instead seeming to watch the goings-on in interest with unseen eyes.

Ari turned her gaze towards Jean, a wide smile slipping over her full lips as she moved to the woman's side. Extending a hand to finger the ends of Jean's fiery wet locks, Ari said quietly, "How're you feeling Jeannie?" Though it could easily be taken either way, Ari wasn't just talking about Jean's physicality. Getting married was a huge thing, and it wasn't odd for people to feel nervous about taking the plunge. Jean and Scott had pretty much been married for some time though, they just needed to make it official.

Putting down her to-do list, Ari picked up Jean's hairbrush and gently began to comb out the woman's hair. Jean was the older sister Ari's parents had never given her, and suddenly her desire to skip ahead to the vows and reception took a backseat to the fact that Ari was genuinely happy she was there with the redhead. With Jean's parents deceased and the Professor gone, they all only had each other and the little family that they had become.

“… A stripper? Uhm… no…”

A frown appeared on Mina's features, pausing in her perusal of the pictures in the camera. "I'm not sure I like the way you said that..." she said warily, glancing back down to the camera in her hands, slightly afraid to keep going. But that masochistic side of her just had to keep going and her dismay grew with each picture she looked at.

She counted up to four and then couldn't bear to think about it anymore switching off the camera and setting it down on the desk before collapsing down onto the couch just as Meghan and Rosie walked in. Mina blanched at her daughter's question, eyes widening in slight panic.

:: You and your big mouth :: [Jean] thought to Mina, only belatedly wondering if her friend’s mind was capable of receiving the thought after last night. :: Sorry :: she whispered.

Mina had been about to make up something to tell Meghan when Jean's voice sounded in her head and it was someone was banging pots and pans around in there. She let out a quiet groan, pressing a hand to her forehead. "Please don't do that again...not until this aspirin kicks in, anyway," she muttered, or perhaps begged would be a better word.

Jean emerged into the suite and Mina pointed a finger at both her and Ari. "Not one word of this to Logan, ok? Not a single word. I don't want him going ballistic today and messing up his suit. Do you have any idea what I had to do to get him to agree to wear that thing? Christ, you'd think the thing was dipped in acid or something," she said tiredly, rubbing her eyes.

Ari started brushing Jean's hair and Mina reclined back on the couch, her slender frame stretched out lazily as she smiled gently to her friend. "It's your turn now, Jeannie," she teased, remembering when their positions had been reversed and it had been Mina getting ready for her wedding. It had been hell keeping Jonathan out of the suite; he'd kept trying to sneak in until Jean had threatened to make him forget his vows. "You excited?" she asked teasingly because she already knew the answer to that.

She looked to Rosie and Meghan sitting on the couch beside her with their coloring books and smiled, sitting up. "I know a couple little girls who are bound to be excited about the wedding. Isn't that right, girlies?" she asked, reaching over and goosing Meghan in the side gently.

Mina blinked, suddenly remembering something. "Shoot. I'll be right back," she said, standing up and leaving the suite for just a few minutes to grab something out of her own room. She returned just a minute later, a small velvet jewelry box held in her hand.

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue," she recited, smiling warmly at Jean and glancing at Ari. "Your dress is the something old, we figure your shoes are something new, I've got something borrowed, and Ari has something blue."

She passed the small box to Jean. "Now remember," she said quickly, keeping a hold of the box as if she was reluctant to let it go. "These are just for you to borrow. Don't try and run off with them, now," she joked before releasing her grip on the box.

When Ari came in, Jean thought she simply had a stray rose in her hands, perhaps one from out of one of the arrangements decorating the mansion. However, her bleary eyes popped open and she did a double-take when the rose sat, yes – actually sat, on the desk and turned its scarlet head this way and that to look at the room.

“After last night, I’m in no condition to think,” Jean put her hand over her eyes and then slowly spread her fingers to look through the gaps at the strange flower. “Ari, where did that come from?” The mansion was crawling with mutants who could do practically anything but the list of people who could do that only had a few likely culprits. “On second thought, as long as it doesn’t make trouble and the wedding doesn’t turn into a comedy of errors, where it came from isn’t important.”

Ari circled behind Jean, running her fingers and brush through her damp hair, while Mina stayed on the couch, but both women, in their own way, asking the same question.

How was she feeling? Was she excited? Nervous?

She smiled softly and wondered if they needed an answer, what could she say… she was only a short time away from marrying the man she loved and who loved her with every ounce of his being.

“Yes and no,” she said, looking up briefly to catch Ari’s eye and then over to Mina, “part of me just wants the ceremony over already, so we can go on with our lives,” then Jean grinned slyly, “and part of me wants to look at and remember everything… keep the memory… use it if…” she halted, coming dangerously close to the torture she’d lived through only a few months before when Scott had been taken, “anything should happen.”
