“Tell That To The One Who Killed My Parents.” she interrupted. Her volume had not changed, but a certain hostility in her voice could give anyone a note that she was neither kidding nor pleased.

Scott was not surprised by her words. He had suspected that somehow, somewhere a telepath had done something to her or someone she loved, and there it was. He hadn't been trying to goad her, he just wanted things out in the open. She was too secretive, and in his experience, people who wanted help were more forthcoming to the people they wanted help from, especially considering the nature of the help she sought, "That's why I said 'with an ounce of morality,' You come here expecting us to be the good guys, you have to learn that that implies a sense of responsibility regarding our abilities, and that includes our telepaths."

She offers her 'mission statement' as it were, and it's what he's wanted her to tell him from the moment he entered the garage. He nodded his head, "An admirable goal, Miss Schwarz. It's the purpose for this school to educate and protect our people, to allow mutants to have as normal a life as is possible until that day we are accepted within society as something more than monstrous freaks with frightening and often dangerous powers. It's not always possible to do that peacefully, but we do our best with it... And, yes, SHIELD is not always on the up and up, but they are the lesser of a great many evils."

They decided to move inside, and Logan mentioned Mana, just as Scott was certain he would. "Bring Miss Cavanagh to my office please, Logan. We'll be in there."

They head up to the school, Shina mentioning that her mutant powered sight had gone out due to her lack of energy, and as cold as it might sound, Scott was still not going to let her take his energies to replenish herself. She may be saying the right words, but that didn't mean the right actions would follow. He wouldn't humiliate her by taking her arm but he would help her inside, treating her the same way as he had been treated when his vision was in question.

"The driveway is straight and smooth, Miss Schwarz," Scott said, "And free of snow. Keep listening to my voice, and I'll take you up to the main house. When I was fifteen, my powers manifested. Because of an injury I suffered as a child, I have no ability to just them off. As you said, the energy releases like a flood, and the only solution to it, at the time was to keep my eyes shut. For six months, I didn't allow myself even the tiniest peek, afraid, and rightly so, that I would kill or destroy with every glance. Five steps here, there is a railing approximately 4 inches to your left. I learned to function totally blind, including learning braille, and using a cane, not a support one like the one I'm using until I've recovered from my injury, but a sensory cane, like I am sure you are familiar with."

They were inside now, the temperature much warmer in here. Scott lead her down the hall to his office, continuing to talk so that she could focus on where they were going. "From the front door, my office is seventy two average length steps. Your stride might be a bit shorter than my own, but it should be close enough, if you are ever in need of me and you've depleted your energies to the point where you are entirely drained. Once we know a bit more about your abilities, it might be possible to fit you with some sort of storage device. My powers are contained by use of a specially manufactured synthetic crystal set in glasses or a visor. My brother, Alex, who also has energy powers uses a containment suit with a monitor on it that helps him to regulate and control his energy output. My point being, of course, there are ways to keep you from suffering once we understand your particular needs."

Now, they've reached his office, and Scott took his seat, a soft sigh escaping his lips as his injured knee thanked him for the rest. He propped it up and said, "There's a chair directly in front of you. Have a seat, and we'll lay our cards on the table while we wait for Logan and Miss Cavanagh."

Place in the time-line Continued From The Ones You Seek

Shina simply nodded, putting her emotions into their normal state that she had maintained until he had brought up what was wrong. It wasn’t surprising really, and she could tell he had several of the qualities of a ‘peaceful interrogator’, much like a few that she had worked with over in the desert. Hinting around things, forcing you to say things that you didn’t want to say by means other than brute force.

Shina wondered if everyone had to go through this kind of screening process, and if it was yet another security measure that their heightened alert had been birth to.

If it was normal, then this place was harder to get into than a high security clearance.

Shina listened as he spoke again, confirming several facts. She was smack dab in the middle of the place she wanted to be… the place she had worked and strived for… the place that she felt she belonged and was useful. She almost chuckled at the statement of them being ‘accepted in society’. Humanity wasn’t one to change without kicking and screaming, and usually the kicking and screaming part meant war…

“I would rather join the girl scouts than join SHIELD…” she stated, her mild attempt at humor.

He then spoke to Logan about someone named Ms. Cavanagh… but she doubted really highly that they truly understood what she would need. Then again, considering Scott’s analytical skills, it was possible.

Shina breathed easily, knowing it would be an easy walk at his mentioning of the driveway, although she might almost have wished it wasn’t plowed. The soft crunching in the snow is the easiest way for her to follow in his footsteps… but she couldn’t truly complain. Hell, she was blind, she could complain all she wanted… but that wasn’t Shina.

Instead, she listened intently to what he was saying, using her own analytical skills.

“You an I are more alike than you know… I’ll explain when we get inside.” she stated quickly, instead trying to focus on his voice and instructions.

She came to the realization that they were more alike than she could have imagined. Her fingers found the railing after a moment of slight waving, and she gripped it as they went along, walking much easier now.

“It’s very rare for me to run this low on energy. Usually there is some hyper kid with an exhausted mom that needs calming or someone who could get away with a quick nap. As such, I never had the chance to learn to use a sensory cane… although I do believe I may have to invest in one now… just in case.” she stated, a hardened but slightly warm smile playing on her lips.

Shina actually pushed her stride a little, using her ‘range-walk’ to measure her steps. Secretly she wondered if Scott had OCCD and counted everything… seeing that he knew the exact steps to take. On second thought though, she dismissed that. If what he said was true, he probably just took it as a precaution incase he lost his glasses or visor at some point.

Shina smirked at the thought of some special container or battery. She would rather build it internally instead of relying on some device to assist her with her powers. Otherwise it would forever be a crutch. She matched his steps, trying to place her own feet where she had heard his.

They finally reached the office where the man was kind enough to open and close the door for her. He sat down, notably relieved for reasons that she could only explain as his injury. Her hand reached out and hit the back of the chair she was directed to, and then it slid around it as she walked around and sat down in the chair. He had been up front and honest, now it was her turn.

“I was born blind, but I was also born with the ability to see energy frequencies instead. When I was 4 the telepath, whom I believe was involved in one of the many gangs and such in Germany, came in my house and killed my parents. I don’t know why, and to this day I still can’t find her again. If she’s lucky, I won’t.” she paused for a moment, her facial expression twisted into anger for only a few moments until she once again repressed those emotions.

“There was a fire that the woman left behind, and because of the intense energy a fire brings, it messed up my vision to where I can no longer see passively. Instead I project my own energy constantly in a bubble around me, and I can send out pulses that work like echo-location. The vision part allows me to see through walls or pretty much anything, something I don’t like to use. As far as the draining… I can drain or charge anyone or anything. For example, I could drain you and then place that energy into your desk. Granted, as long as I made sure it was the right frequency, nothing would happen aside the fact that I could later drain your desk for energy. If I use the opposite energy though, the two energies clash, sometimes to the point that it can combust or negatively affect anything where the energies are mingling. I can literally stop or start a person’s heart with that. I have had to do it once.” she spoke, seemingly a little remorseful. Still out in the desert, it was kill or be killed, and she liked life.

She then leaned towards Scott. “I have seen the damage in your eyes. There is a chance with loads of trust, some time and quite a bit of focus on my part, I might be able to help you. I can’t fix myself, but you, I might be able to.” That was it for Shina, she had said everything she could about her ability. Now it was question time. “If you want to know anything… just ask.”

One of Shina’s hands went to her head as the hunger began a pain-induced headache.

“I would rather join the girl scouts than join SHIELD…” she stated, her mild attempt at humor.

Scott couldn't help but smile at this, though it was his usual small smile of what would appear to anyone looking like only mild amusement. The fact was that the man was not accustomed to overt displays of emotion, and considering that she couldn't see him anyway it didn't really matter much. He appreciated her attempt at a joke, recognizing her as someone quite similar to himself. A driven and often obsessive person, with a definite lack of social skill but a genius at tactical strategy. Yes, Scott thought he knew who Shina Schwarz was, not completely, not thoroughly, but enough to believe that she was being honest in her statements. "Frankly, Miss Schwarz, I would rather join the girl scouts than SHIELD." His attempt at humor, not much more successful, but something, a start at least.

In the office, she explained her history and he nodded, taking it all in, "I'm curious, Miss Schwarz, about your military service. I am technically able to see, though my color vision is next to nil and I give a whole new meaning to the term corrective lenses, so I couldn't legally pass the examination for either my driver's or pilot's license, though things were done to make me legal. I can't imagine though even with your energetic sight that your blindness went unnoticed. I am assuming there was a special circumstance regarding your service. Was your mutancy known or did they have a different theory about the nature of your powers?"

She explained her abilities and he nodded, genuinely interested. "I would love to put your powers to the test in our Danger Room. With proper regulation and discipline, you could be something formidable, either a great asset to the world or a deadly weapon against it. Hopefully, your time with us will lead you the right decisions about who to be."

Again she spoke of trying to help him, and he said, "Miss Schwarz, my eyes... my powers are indeed a burden at times, but let me explain something to you, and maybe you'll understand why I am going to refuse your offer to help me. My knee, several months ago, was shattered, a crippling injury. We have a couple of healers here, one being Mana Cavanagh who Logan has gone to bring here, another being a man here with a healing factor in his blood. When I was brought in from the field, I had the opportunity to have this injury completely healed, as good as new. Instead, I have a brace on my leg and am walking with a cane, which, as stylish as it is, doesn't stop the pain I am in, or alleviate the need for strict exercise and care. To be instantly healed, and to take the easy way out negates my responsibility for my injury, removes my need for caution and forethought. It makes me... careless. Do you understand?"

Shina also smirked mildly at his comment, roughly the same as his. She was business… at least this side of her self was. That brought something else to mind though, something much more… complicated, and something that set her apart from anyone more than any mutant ability. She knew she was going to have to introduce the person she had come to terms as her sister, and it would be likely that she would be either disbelieved. Hell, if someone had told Shina herself such a thing, she would have an extremely hard time believing it.

Then Scott began to question her military career. She decided introductions could be best left to after his questions, as she had invited him to ask anything he wanted to know. Settling in and sitting back in the chair she relaxed as she listened to his voice, not being able to see the expressions on his face.

“Actually, I haven’t had many issues with people finding out I am blind… the glazed look of my eyes is concealed by the fact that when I have my vision active they glow slightly, or so one of my old friends told me… he died in a mutant hate crime.” she said, cringing in pain slightly as the memory of her fellow mutant passed through her mind. “As far as the few people that did notice, either I, or my father, kept them quiet. Several of my soldiers knew, but they were content with me saving their neck from time to time to keep a secret.” she finished.

Then he made mention of testing her powers in something called a ‘Danger Room’, of which Shina could only guess was a field training site somewhere on the grounds, although the word Room made her wonder. The fact that he left it open that she might become against helping humanity was an astoundingly powerful detail though… he wasn’t trying to spit random propaganda in her ear about doing the right thing or anything of the sort… she had the freedom to choose.

He then went into detailed explanation of what she had offered. Shina listened carefully, and slowly was growing more and more respect for the man that sat before her.

“Yes, I do understand, and I do agree with you to some extent, as I know how you feel. When you offered the making of some kind of storage device, I felt the same… relying on such a thing would be a crutch, and should I find myself without it, I would be vulnerable. But there is one thing I don’t understand… was the childhood injury, the one that impaired your vision, your fault? If so, how? If you don’t mind me asking of course.” she stated, inquisitively.

Shina knew she couldn’t avoid it any longer.

“I have one more thing… but it is… complicated. The best way to explain it technically is that I have MPD… but she and I have come to terms. I have come to think of her as a sister, inside my head. If you want, I can let you meet her… she is vastly different than myself. Nothing bad, believe me, but definitely different.” she finished, judging his reaction to see how he would react.

This was an incredibly lucky woman for no one to ever discover her blindness, and it was possible that her skills had made it a 'non- issue.' After all, people were very willing to sweep some things under the rug if it there was a reason to. He couldn't obviously notice either the glaze nor the slight blue glow, his own vision problems making a great deal of difference. Whatever it was, it worked for her, so he'd leave it at that.

When she asked about his injury, he frowned, his hand coming to the model on his desk of the 'DeHaviland Mosquito' that had been the plane his father had been flying them home in... "When I was eleven and my younger brother Alex was five, we were flying home to Offutt AFB in Nebraska from a holiday spent in Anchorage, Alaska. Something happened, to this day I am not sure what, but the plane suffered catastrophic engine failure and the passenger and cargo compartments caught fire. My mother managed to save only one parachute, so she put it on me, used her belt to tie Alex to me, and pushed us out, sacrificing herself so that we had a chance. The debris caught our chute, and even though my powers manifested to slow our decent, in order to protect my brother from the fall, I turned to hit the ground first and fractured my skull. I was awake long enough after we touched down long enough to see my brother crying but alive, and then woke up a year later in a hospital in Nebraska. When my powers resurfaced three years later, it was clear that there was damage."

He talked frankly, openly, without embellishment or emotional distress, the only sign of his feelings towards the incident being the hand on his plane, the only model on his desk. If she couldn't see it, she wouldn't know anything more than the nothing his voice told her.

She spoke of her mental disorder and his hands came to steeple beneath his chin, thoughtfully, "I am afraid that I am not the person to advise you or assist you with psychiatric matters. That would be my fiance's area of expertise. I'm not what the other staff members would consider... emotionally in tune. However, I've learned by dealing with the varied staff and students of this school to expect absolutely everything. If you would like to show me your other... your sister, I'd be interested in meeting her, so as not to have any surprises, but if you want me to meet her as a prelude to integration, well, that is not really my field."

Shina hadn’t been able to see his hand nor the model airplane, since she couldn’t see, however, she could feel the emotion just below what he was presenting in his tone. Perhaps it was the fact that she had a heightened sense of hearing… especially while unable to see. She listened intently, making note of the Offutt, an Air Force Base she had once visited as a pass-through for a day. She silently commended Scott’s mother on self-sacrifice and bravery, two honorable traits… but she also knew that it had a lot to do with being a mother. She made a mental note to see if her father could dig up anything that the Air Force perhaps didn’t reveal about the event.

She nodded as he finished. He was valiant even at his young age. It spoke a lot of his parents and how he had brought him up, and the sacrifices he had made.

“I understand your predicament now… but I am unsure as to the reasoning one why you wouldn’t want that little part of you healed… or is it in their memory?” she stated simply, not being able to relate a careless act of some kind that resulted in his leg injury to the accident, or at least the incident of which he was not at fault, to his pride.

and cargo compartments caught fire. I was awake long enough after we touched down long enough to

After she had told the man about her ‘other self’ he had recommended therapy… telepathic type she was sure. Instead of starting that subject again, she pushed her paranoia away once again and presumed he had meant verbally. He didn’t even seem to care about such a mental condition, or at least had seen it before, as his tone hadn’t changed even in the slightest. In fact, if anything, he seemed anxious to meet her. Shina grinned at that thought, and knew that while Shina and Scott might have a lot in common, it was about opposite for Jane.

With that, she closed her blind eyes, allowing Jane to take precedence in her mind much like an actor giving the stage to someone else. Shina’s entire demeanor changed too, becoming far more relaxed and eased, all the stress and tension suddenly released into the abyss of her mind. As she opened her eyes, she took a hand and openly tapped her palm against her forhead.

“My gosh, why don’t you ever introduce me, dummy?” she stated simply, and her tone had changed as well. Her voice was warm, vibrant and full of energy, even in her weakened state. “Hi, my name’s Jane. And don’t worry about repeating yourself, I hear and see everything too, but she handles to more stern side of things. I have the ‘emotional tune’ that you were talkin’ about a second ago… makes us a pretty cool team, if you ask me.” She said, holding her hand out again to shake his… although aiming more or less over his right shoulder due to a serious lack of coordination.

She sat back down after shaking his hand… and although not by much, her tone became slightly more serious. “Ya know, you shouldn’t be too hard on Shina about the whole draining thing. Technically, if she lacked the morals you were talkin’ about, she could have drained you the moment she shook your hand, or anyone’s… and she genuinely wants to help you too. And the hunger pain is really starting to get to me… where the heck is Logan?” she muttered, listening intently for footsteps for a moment. Hearing none, her attention again returned to Scott. “That was pretty fricken brave of you to take the fall for your brother though… major kudo points for me!” she stated giving him two thumbs up.

“I understand your predicament now… but I am unsure as to the reasoning one why you wouldn’t want that little part of you healed… or is it in their memory?”

Scott sighed, not entirely certain how to explain this. "My ability has measured to a degree that incautious use of it would result in devastation. I would very much like to control it, like to have it at my command instead of the other way around. But if I allowed you or anyone else to quick fix me, I'm concerned that I would lose my ability to use proper judgment when utilizing it. I have seen mutants with complete control who have grown arrogant and manipulative with their powers. Knowing that I must consciously restrain myself, knowing that without my visor or glasses that I could crack the world in two, helps me to focus my morality and my self-control. Does that help you to understand my reasonings?"

And, then, Shina allowed her personality to be subsumed into... Jane. Scott, who was familiar with Ran and Lyn, the two Mordred boys who shared a single body, recognized the changes in body stance and vocal tone. She introduced herself with an ill aimed hand shake, and he took her hand, with a single squeeze before releasing it. She spoke a little about herself and returned to the topic of 'the whole draining thing," a topic, frankly Scott was growing annoyed at, not liking the whole hard sale pitch. He had declined and she should respect that, no matter the nature of her need. "You tell me she has morals regarding the taking of power only moments after telling me you take energy without permission from hyper children or people who could use a nap? I see a hypocrisy there. Perhaps it is different because I am a mutant and we have to 'stick together' as a suffering race?"

"Logan is on his way," Scott said, his voice betraying nothing, "This is a large school. Miss Cavanagh could be any number of places."

She commented on his 'saving' Alex and he shook his head, "He's my brother. That's what family does," he said, downplaying the incident. It wouldn't have occurred to him to do otherwise. "Jane, while we are waiting for Logan to return, tell me a little about yourself, your existence with Shina. How did your development come about and what purpose is it that you serve for her?"

Shina simply listened again, this time through Jane’s ears, at Scott’s response to her earlier question. “Shina says ‘I understand’ and I personally think it’s awesome. You are so noble you make medieval knights look so… I dunno… dumb!” she states, and it could be noted she openly mocked Shina with the ‘I understand’ by acting stern to the point that it was over-the-top. Chuckling a moment, Jane tapped her fingers against her thumb, each in order and without loosing the coordination between hands. Her father had taught her this… it was supposed to improve hand coordination and it also served as something to distract from the pain that was still slowly mounting inside her.

Scott mentioned the details about Logan. “Yea, but knowing him and his nose, I suppose he’s probably like an uber-tracker. Hopefully he knows what to look for in someone… to fit my… needs, that is. Anyhow!” she finished quickly, looking back in Scott’s general direction.

He then spoke about how he would have likely died for his brother, and almost did. Shina never really had anything like that… aside her fathers, both biological and her current step-dad. It could be noted that for a mere moment she seemed sad in some way, but soon it was again replaced by her usual energetic expression as he asked his question.

“Actually, if you wanna get technical, I was first… the original so to speak. She kinda developed after everything happened, kinda like she formed out of all my negative emotions and my military training. That is how Shina came around, and we fought like sisters do at first, but we kinda get along now. She handle’s business, I take care of being a real human being. ‘Sides, she is seriously anti-social… it’s like she is paranoid about everything… overly-cautious.” She stated, and paused for a moment… “Oh shut up you, you know it’s true” she accused, looking up and to the right before once again smiling vibrantly at Scott.

Scott shook his head, "It's not nobility, Jane, it's responsibility. There are mutants who believe that it is our birthright to use our abilities for personal gain. After all, a human with an uncommon gift on the guitar for example would not be frowned upon for holding a concert. Why should we hide what 'skill' nature gave us? Yes? But a power like mine, or my brother's, or any of the other extraordinarily strong abilities would be extraordinarily dangerous. Alfred Nobel used his genius to discover dynamite, and would have ignorantly left a legacy of death if a french paper had not accidentally printed a premature obituary and caused him realize where his responsibility lie. The fact is simply, just because you can, doesn't mean you should, and that's one of the tenets of this school. It would be hypocritical if I did otherwise."

He noticed that she avoided mention of her own hypocrisy that he'd pointed out. Shina was still young, not that much younger than him agewise, but he was sometimes so much older than his chronological age. Jon called him "The oldest eighteen year old" he'd ever met only moments after they'd been introduced. That was so long ago...

'Jane' went on to tell him how she was sort of the manifestation of the emotions and freedom that Shina had suppressed to survive in the world she was in. Scott understood the duality. There were times when he was so much more Cyclops than Scott Summers. It had never gone so far as to be a double personality but he could understand that if his personal control was not so tight that he could have slipped into disassociation like Shina/Jane had.

"Well, I am not the one to suggest a treatment or even whether or not there is even a need for a solution at all," Scott said, "You seem to have come up with a way of existing that works for you, and it's not my place to suggest anything different. However, it would make me feel a little more comfortable if you did speak with Jean about this... both of you. Would that be acceptable?"

(((BTW, if you re-read the post, Jane is the original personality, not Shina. Not a huge horrible ordeal, just for future reference.)))

Jane listened intently, Shina obviously understanding much more considering her heightened maturity level than the mentally younger Jane. Jane still held that sense of innocence, and Shina could handle almost any situation… which made them a dynamic team. “Well, it seems you got everything figured out… your fricken smart… you know that?” she stated out of the blue once he was finished.

Jane then again listened as he began to speak of treatment. “As long as she doesn’t start telling me that I’m crazy then I have no problems with it… and Shina said something to the effect of ‘if you want us too, blah blah blah,’ or something like that.” She finished, mocking her other half again. Jane seemed to do that on a rather regular basis it seemed.

Jane winced for a moment as the pain in her skull began to throb slightly with her heartbeat. She only had about 5 to 10 more minutes before she was going to need medical attention. Rubbing her temples she leaned forward, placing her elbows on her knees, and eyes towards the bottom of his desk. “I’m sorry Scott, I gotta go… Shina’s better at handling pain than me… so…” she stated, closing her eyes again. Once again, her stance became more rigid, her tone more hardened, as Shina once again took the wheel of their mind.

Shina then looked at Scott, or at least at where she had last heard his voice, and she leaned back more professionally, and she too began the finger-tapping coordination exercise, but she was a little more quick than Jane had been. “I truly believe in you now Scott, and I don’t mean just in honesty. You have gained my respect just as I did my soldiers… and I now see why you were placed in charge. You have the discipline and intelligence to properly run this facility regardless of the extremes that raising a school full of mutants can bring. My question to you then is where can I best be placed? I am good with math, mechanics and artillery, the latter of them obviously not being a subject for school.”

“Well, it seems you got everything figured out… your fricken smart… you know that?” she stated out of the blue once he was finished.

Scott couldn't help but chuckle lowly at that, "Figured out, perhaps, smart, not so much. I've been leading the X-Men since I was eighteen, Miss Schwarz, and I was a student for about three years before that. That's a long time to learn how things work around here. It took time, and it took patience, but eventually I fell into the role that I was best suited for."

She mocked Shina again, and said she would accept any treatment as long as it wasn't suggesting she was insane. Quite the contrary, actually. Disassociative, yes, but crazy? That was a horse of a different color, really. But her teasing was interrupted by the obvious pain she was in. Where was Logan and Mana? Shina was right, Logan should have tracked her down by now. The situation was apparently getting dire, but still he could not give in to sympathy and allow her to take his powers.

Shina returned and she proclaimed her respect for her, and he nodded, "Thank you, Shina, I was not always suited to lead, and there may be some that say I am not suited now, but I am doing what I can to make a difference, and not just to the children, but to all the world. We have a positive contribution and a right to life, and that's what we are trying for here."

He can tell how much trouble she was having, even as emotionless Shina asked where she should be placed and he said, "Let's concentrate on getting your hunger under control and then we'll look into proper placement for you. Right now you are in no condition to be of any use to anybody. You said you can take energies to replenish your stores. Is there a specific energy you need? My beams are concussive and you mentioned taking bioenergies. Would electric waves be unpalatable, or would you be able to exist on just that?"

Shina smirked as Scott chuckled. Finally, she had broken the ice between them completely, hacking at it with the humor that only Jane could properly muster. “I do believe the more correct term she was trying to say would be ‘Experienced’… Hopefully I can prove to you that I can be useful alone, as I assume my coming to this school likely ranks me somewhere near the equivalent of Private.” She stated after his explanation of his history within the school.

She detested the thought of being demoted, but she was in a different organization, and as such, she needed to work her way up the best way she could… and more than likely, that meant from the bottom on up. If she was lucky she might get the equivelant to Corporal at least, and she would gain and demand respect from people she taught. She would have it no other way.

With a nod he spoke about how he was still modest in his position of power, and his own goals in life. “At least you have a gameplan, but the question lies to how you plan to accomplish that plan. What strategy do you use to cultivate someone from being so easily tempted by greed and revenge? I am sure you have had your fair share of those types come through here.” She replied simply.

She did note how he disregarded her question about where she should be placed, and instead focused on her needs. It was another admirable trait, although this one in particular she could have done without. For a kid, perhaps, but not her. She didn’t want to be seen as weak, but the mounting pain was beginning to overwhelm her pride. Shina looked at Scott as though it were not effecting her at all, but her eyes portrayed the pain if one looked deep enough. “It’s not so much just energy, but like you said, bioenergy. The reason yours would work is because the energy is produced by your mutation, and thus, bioenergy. I have tried to drain batteries before with no success, and considering the fact that true electricity could stop my heart, I have never attempted anything like an electrical socket. I basically change my own bioenergy frequency to match what I am trying to drain or charge, then push or pull the energy from that target.” She explained, still listening for Logan’s footsteps.

“So, you want me to let this complete stranger feed from me?” Mana was frowning, seriously frowning. Perhaps Logan had misjudged her willingness to help just about anyone, if she possibly could. Truly, that wasn’t the case… the truth was, the last time she’d allowed someone to do that to her, she’d found herself with some pretty major power problems… namely, the inability to close off the link that formed when she allowed her healing energies to be taken. “Okay, I am not saying that I won’t do it,” of course she wasn’t, she was falling in step beside Logan as he led her back towards Scott’s office, after all. However… “This is sudden. How do you know it won’t have some sort of adverse affect on me?”

“I don’t know,” was Logan’s simple answer. “All I can tell yer is that yer’ll probably have one of tha best sleeps yer’ve had in ages,” Mana’s response to that was a raising of her eyebrows and a smirk. “Oh, well, that’s fine then, let’s do it,” the sarcasm was startling. “I’m all for helping people Logan, but goodness, how in the world do you know this stranger isn’t pulling your leg? Just because she’s got a similar background in the military as you doesn’t mean she is here for what she says she’s here for,” and to that, the Wolverine gave the healer a warning look. “Kid, I can read her body language like she’s a book, and why tha hell would I come ter get yer if I didn’t trust she was genuine?”

Whoops.

“Ah, right,” he had a point. “Um, sorry, just... me?” she just looked at him. “I suddenly feel needed,” it was her attempt at breaking the sudden tension, and it worked, the smirk appearing on Logan’s face, even though, inside his head, he was constantly thinking ~She has tha answers, ask her. Damnit, she reminds me too much of what I don’t know,~ and on and on. Just as well they didn’t have a link, and never would, for Logan would not stand for anyone in his head, not even someone that’d been through the same hell as him. Although, exceptions had been made;; perhaps one day in the future he'd make some more...

Stopping at Scott’s door, Logan turned to Mana, “Yer don’t have ter do this, make up yer mind now before we step inter tha office, for, knowin yer powers, yer gonna feel her need for help tenfold once we pass over the threshold,” he explained.

Mana held up her hands, and pointed to her eyes, the purple glow unmistakable... “Too late,” she murmured. “I can’t turn back now, and I swear, that is such a weakness, the inability to say no,” Logan just gave her a look. On the one hand, it was Mana’s greatest strength, the willingness to help no matter the cost to herself;; on the other, if that fact became known to the wrong kind of people… using her til she keeled over was more than likely going to happen. “One Eye, we’re here,” Logan called, from the still closed door. He’d learnt his lesson about just barging on in to Scott’s office several times already… it wasn’t something the man liked, and one could hardly blame him.

“I do believe the more correct term she was trying to say would be ‘Experienced’… Hopefully I can prove to you that I can be useful alone, as I assume my coming to this school likely ranks me somewhere near the equivalent of Private.”

Scott looked at the woman with a serious look and said, "This is something we're going to have to discuss. If you're going to remain with us, you're going to have to understand, that the school is our primary focus here. Mina Harker, the headmistress of the institute, is in charge of the well being of the children, their schooling, the development of their powers and control. My function here is slightly harder to explain to non-combatants, but I don't think I need to pull any punches here, or be ambiguous with what I reveal. I am in charge of the X-Men, field leader and squad commander. In my absence, Warren Worthington, the Angel, takes my place. Other than that, in the ranks of the senior X-Men, not one of them is beneath another in status. Each member of my team has a skill and a place. Phoenix is a skilled telekinetic, Flux has molecular manipulation abilities, Glass can make projectiles, etc, etc. Each one is expected to follow my command, but not blindly. I'm not above making mistakes and they're not beneath pointing them out. I lead to prevent the chaos of clashing egos, and because strategy is something I'm skilled at. But there is no rank and file within the X-Men. We aren't military."

This speech made, he waved a hand and said, "That being said, there is a division between Senior and Junior X-Men, that is based entirely on field experience and team interaction. You would, if you are placed on the team, would begin as a Junior X-Man, despite your combat experience, until you developed the team dynamic and proven yourself able to work as an X-Men, and you will be promoted by team vote. However, I am not going to recommend placing you on the Jr. squad until I've made a thorough performance evaluation and seen some evidence that you are able to make progress with proper regulation and control of your energy levels. Your military career notwithstanding, you join us, you become my responsibility and I will not send team mates out who aren't able to keep up. We are, as you said, a peacekeeping force, but you know as well as I do that that does not mean we are pacifistic. We have faced world destroying threats and powerful opponents."

“At least you have a gameplan, but the question lies to how you plan to accomplish that plan. What strategy do you use to cultivate someone from being so easily tempted by greed and revenge? I am sure you have had your fair share of those types come through here.”

Scott nodded, "Indeed we have. Let's be straight, Miss Schwarz, we are all powerful creatures, able to do things that humanity can only dream of. I could use my powers to level cities. Wolverine could slaughter anyone who displeases him. Professor Xavier himself could have used his telepathy to make the world accept us and fall to one knee before their mutant betters. It would have saved lives, it would have stopped all wars, it would have led this world into a utopia. But it would have been wrong, and deceitful and not responsible. Have you noticed a theme throughout my talk, Miss Schwarz? Responsibility? We've been gifted with our powers, even when they feel like we've been cursed, and that's what we teach here, responsibility and the consequence of irresponsibility. You'll understand once you've been around here longer and forgive me if I sound abrupt or inflexible in anyway. I've been here a long time. I feel I know how things should be run."

She began to explain energy, and he was not going to deny her one more time. He was simply going to wait for Mana to arrive and deal with this and he prayed that she could, because Shina was too incessant and too insistent and he no longer had the patience to deal with this, though to Scott's credit, he showed absolutely none of this in his voice or his breathing or anything. Few people would ever know everything Scott Summers felt without access to telepathy, though Jean, dealing with Rosie in the kitchen, was more than aware of his irritation, and was sending him calming waves of strength through their telepathy rapport. He was, therefore, understandably relieved when the knock came and Logan called in, “One Eye, we’re here.”

"Come in, Logan," Scott called, hoping that Mana was with him.
