Shina did nothing but listen to the words Scott was saying… that… and she was also listening intently for footsteps. The pain within was nearing to the point that not even the hardened veteran Shina would be able to remain unflinching. For now though she still acted as though the near agonizing level of ‘hunger’ per-say was pushing the burning sensation through her body. Shina smiled as he finished. “Firstly… the Angel, Pheonix, Flux, Glass? Are those code-names for Mr. Worthington and others, or some kind of status? That aside, I do understand you are far from military, but that being said, I have already noticed some similarities between this institute and my previous employer… except here at least you cut the bull--, the unnecessary things out to make it more efficient.” Shina was now curious and listened again as he resumed his speech.

Shina half chuckled. “If you were pacifists I don’t think I would belong at all. I completely understand being put into a lower squad until I truly understand this place, as well as my role. It will also give you, as the leader, a chance to see what I can do and how it can be applied to benefit your teams to maximize their capabilities. As far as my ability to make progress and performance… as long as I have some kind of motivation, which I never run low on, I will drive on to show you that I can easily pull my own weight and more...” she stated, raw determination hanging on her voice like a thick paint. She was motivated, and the only motivation she needed was herself.

Shina shook her head and smiled, looking towards him. “Trust me when I say you don’t sound inflexible… you sound like my father to the point that it is nearly scary… and considering he is fifty with over nine years in combat zones, that is saying something… I believe that there probably is no other person more suited for your position than yourself… and that coming from me is truly saying something.” she stated with a great deal of respect. Shina chuckled for a moment and then chimed in, “still, its going to be difficult taking orders again, I won’t lie.”

That was when she heard them… the familiar heavy steps of the man with the odd bones, Logan. His steps were unmistakable, but the lighter ones, the significantly harder to hear ones had to be the person he had brought with him, the person he presumed would be able to help her, or more correctly, was willing. When Logan had called Scott one-eye it made Shina smirk at the interesting twist to the typical four-eyes joke that was a part of wearing glasses. He quickly ushered them in, and Shina listened intently as they both entered, being sure to note were they were stepping to confirm their location and thus pointing her hand in the right direction when she stood to face the new-comer, presenting her hand towards the one she had yet to meet. “Hello ma’am. My name is Shina.” She stated simply.

(((I apologize for the grotesque level of shortness... but I honestly didn't know what else to put down... Sorry :whistling: )))

"Come in, Logan," with one final look towards Mana, just to verify she did indeed want to go through with this, Logan opened the door, giving Scott a simple nod of acknowledgement before settling his gaze on Shina and moving to take up a position against the wall to her immediate right. “Shina, Mana;; Mana, Shina… she’s a healer, not sure if she can help, but she’s willin ter give it a try,” nodding towards the dark haired woman, before he suddenly realized Shina wouldn’t be able to see it.

Although Blade Girl gave Shina a smile, she had already anticipated the need for being that little bit noisier, or that little bit more obvious as to where she was located in the room, unable to rely on the usual hand and facial gestures that clearly would not be seen by this particular woman. “Hello ma’am. My name is Shina,” it was hard not to sense the need the ex military woman obviously had, although, Mana could clearly feel the pain was by far not the conventional type she was used to. A little hesitant to shake her hand, simply because her powers did like to go ahead and start the job of healing before she’d even ordered them too;; not a lack of control, more a clear will and need to help, plain and simple;; the Empathic healer did finally reach out, will maintained and controlled, it just took that little bit of extra effort.

“Yes, Logan has already informed me. I’m Ramana, Mana, or Blade Girl, your choice which one you use,” what Wolverine hadn’t told her was the interesting side to Shina’s powers, that she was able to tell what ability any one of them had. Therefore, she would soon learn why her codename was Blade Girl.

“Not sure how exactly yer goin ter do this,” Logan said, his quizzical look clearly reflected in his tone. “Yer want her to sit down or somethin?” Glancing at Scott, he added, “Apparently, Mana’s done somethin like this before,” before he once again turned his attention to the regenerative healer. “Yer better inform Shina of tha downside ter it kid,” he said, having a feeling Shina may not accept her help if it meant a link would remain between them until Mana regained her strength enough to concentrate on closing it off, if it could be closed off at all.

“Ah, yeah, um,” Mana was worried now. “Okay, so, the last time I let someone do this, I couldn’t close of the link that forms when I heal people. It’s… well, I call it Telempathic, meaning, I can communicate with you telepathically via it, but more so feel when you are in pain, upset, happy, any of your emotions, really. It’s just a part of my healing powers, opening up the mind to me and forming a bond to the person I heal for life IF they allow it. Thing is, if your taking my energy to replenish yourself has the same effect, I won’t be able to close it off,” it was clear Mana really hoped Shina wouldn’t say no… that she’d let her help.

Really, though, it was totally up to her, and the military trained woman couldn’t be blamed if she preferred not to have her secrets opened to a fellow mutant she‘d only just met, even though Mana would try her very best not to allow herself to 'see' anything for as long as she was conscious enough to be able to.

“Firstly… the Angel, Phoenix, Flux, Glass? Are those code-names for Mr. Worthington and others, or some kind of status? That aside, I do understand you are far from military, but that being said, I have already noticed some similarities between this institute and my previous employer… except here at least you cut the bull--, the unnecessary things out to make it more efficient.”

Scott steepled his fingers under his chin and said, "Our code names are to give us a degree of anonymity. Unlike most other super powered beings, we mutants have no choice to be what we are and no ability to turn it off and on. Even those of us with complete control of our powers, when we wake up, we're mutants. When we go to bed, our DNA is still subtly different from human. We shouldn't be persecuted for the circumstances of our birth, and therefore, we protect our identities with code names. Some of our more elitist of opponents claim that they are a 'casting off' of our human lives, as if manifesting our powers is a rebirth. That's a view a little too-- radical for my tastes, but it is what it is. As for an similarities between the army and how this school is run, well, like it or not, we're at war. I have the same goal as any military commander. To keep my troops alive."

She seemed to understood and compared him to her father, which was in some way insulting considering his age, but not really. She meant it as a compliment and Scott was not a man to take things in anyway other than how they were meant. He didn't really have the capacity to see hidden meanings, and he didn't tend to dissemble in his own speech. He knew he was old for his age, had been since he was first a student here. Sixteen years old and learning to rebuild jet planes. Eighteen years old and leading a team that was untried, untested, learning how to issue orders, to trust that they will survive, that he didn't have to do everything himself in order to protect them. It had been a hard lesson to learn. He was a solitary man, who took the weight of the world on his shoulders, willingly, not because he thought he was the only one who could, but to spare anyone else from having to. It was a mindset that did not allow him to be 'young.'

Logan and Miss Cavanagh entered and Mana delivered her speech about her telempathy, and Scott put his hand to his forehead in frustration. This was exactly what he was afraid of when Logan had suggested Mana, but Scott had been inwardly hoping that the berserker knew what he was doing or that Mana had been practicing with her abilities enough to be able to control this. He looked at Logan, his normally unreadable face clearly asking the question, "Why would you think a healer who cannot help but forge a telepathic link was the right choice for a person who has already made it clear that she despises telepaths?" He didn't say it out loud, but surely Shina was going to think that this was some sort of set up. How could she not? All their talk about their telepaths not forcing their way in and here Mana was saying that that was exactly what she was going to do.

Scott turned away, his fingers and thumb gently digging into his temples to relieve the pressure. He glanced idly out the window and noticed Wanda Maximoff out in the snow, her ever present brother at her side, tending to her as if she was made of porcelain, which in Pietro's eyes, she just might be. "Miss Schwarz, if this is not acceptable to you," Scott said, an idea coming to him. Wanda's powers were unpredictable but seemed as if they may be uniquely suited to Shina's needs, adaptable and flexible enough that they could be molded to the energies that Shina was in need of, "Perhaps, there are others in this school with a less invasive way of replenishing your energy."

Shina gave a half-hearted smile as Scott explained the reason behind the code-names. It made sense… the people that were against them couldn’t use their families for leverage or hostages. He was right too, they were different… no matter how normal one acted or appeared. She nodded, knowing full well of what he was talking about. “I have experience when it comes to trying to keep soldiers alive and in fighting shape. Train to fight, fight like you train. Improvise, adapt and overcome. It’s the basics of war and battle that can save your hide and those around you. On that subject we are always going to be on the same page. And out of general curiosity, what would you say my code-name would be, and what’s yours?” she questioned, her smile actually developing across her face as she wondered. She too thought the idea of complete re-birth of an individual completely based on the fact that they had been bestowed with supernatural abilities was something quite extreme.

After Mana entered, she was introduced by Logan. He seemed uncertain as the way in which Mana was going to be able to help, but he did note that she was willing to try. “Firstly, thank you for even considering it. Secondly, it is not your ability that I need, just the energy your body produces Ms. Ramana. It doesn’t matter who it is or what they are, as long as they produce biological energy, that is all that matters.” Shina smirked slightly when Logan brought up the way she was to keep herself. “Yes, it would be best if she sat down. The entire draining process can make one feel physically weak.”

When he mentioned something to do with a downside, Shina’s blind eyes narrowed slightly. Logan wouldn’t have brought it up unless it was going to adversely affect Shina or someone around her, and now had her worried. As she went to explain, Shina cupped her chin in her hand, as though she was thinking. Her left eyebrow twitched as the pain flared within her for a moment, giving her a reminder of how dire her situation was. “Normally… I would say no… and with no disrespect to you, Ramana, I would never even consider it unless I was in this kind of pain. However, the fact that you trust me enough to say yes, and have the courage to take that leap of faith with me, makes me respect you. I appreciate your valor, and that is exactly what it is. You are selfless… I see that. If you weren’t you would likely have said no to a complete stranger asking to ‘drain you’.”

Shina’s words were true, and she had grown a respect for Ramana. She reminded him of one of the medics of her old unit. He too would go to any length to help those who were in need, and would stop at nothing, even self sacrifice, to ensure their safety. It was that same dedication to others, even those he didn’t get along with, that had taken his life. The image of the young man jumping on top of the grenade that had been thrown at them seered through her mind and temporarily made her lose focus on the task at hand, rubbing her eyes. Washing that image from her mind, she turned and pointed her blind stare at Scott who tried to ease her from having to deal with the telepath part of the ability.

Shina smirked with something that looked almost cocky. “She will work. She has done her part by coming and being willing to help. Aside that…” her smile grew slightly, “…if that little link does form, I can severe it. Safely, of course.” Shina’s words were painted thick with confidence. She had seen the tentacles that were telepathic links, even the semi-permanent one between Jean and Scott. All it would take was a slight burst of energy of a different frequency and it should disrupt it enough to shut down the link. Worst came to worst, she could just alter her own frequency fast enough that the link would shut down.

Shina told him of her experience in combat a bit and he understood what she was saying, relieved he was not going to have to explain everything to her. A lot of the older students and even some of the junior X-Men, heck some of the senior X-men, thought he was too strict, too unyielding. They didn't understand his overprotective nature when it came to the people under his care. He had been too young to save his mother and father, but he'd sacrificed a year to save his baby brother, had expected to give his whole life for him.

"And out of general curiosity, what would you say my code-name would be, and what’s yours?”

Scott smirked, slightly, "The code names were always more the Professor's area of expertise. He named the original six of us, some more obviously than the other, I suppose. My code is Cyclops, after the visor I wear in combat, and the fact that my optic beams form a single beam. It's not often used in it's full form, to be frank. Even in battle, I am far too often called 'Cyke,'" He glanced over at Logan and said, "Or 'One-eye.' I've grown accustomed to it by now."

Surprisingly, after Mana's admission, and after Shina's absolute reticence about being around telepaths, she agreed to being helped by the telempath. So, she was not so much opposed to the mental probing as she was against the loss of choice about it. He had met many people like her in his life, people who thought that their pain and need was so much more important than others. His own brother had those tendencies. Hell, he'd done his own share of moping. But eventually Shina would learn that not all tragedies belonged to her. It would be some time. She was still young, a lot younger than her demeanor and experience gave credit for.

No matter, the problem was evidently solved, and he could regain some semblance of his own brand of control, by getting Shina's paperwork secured, assigning her a room, a training squad, a schedule for a physical and an assessment of her powers. Busy work. Scott loved it far more than he ever admitted to himself, though not one person who knew him was at all fooled. They knew his need for order.

"Well, if this is all sufficient then, I'd suggest you immediately take Miss Schwarz down to the Infirmary and get her taken care of. If she is up to it, afterwards, you can have Dr. McCoy examine her." Scott said, pulling himself up with his cane, and signaling the end of this stage of Shina's enrollment. "I'll send your room assignment and squad information down there if that is acceptable to you."

Clearly, Scott was not making suggestions here, despite his wording. He was issuing orders, and expecting them to be obeyed. It wasn't abrupt, it wasn't rude, it wasn't uncalled for.

It was Scott.

To say she was relieved would have been an understatement. To come here only to cause offence because of a pretty major detail Logan hadn’t known about when he’d offered her name in helping Shina, well, Mana was just thankful no offence was taken, and that her help was most welcome, albeit with a little bit if a reminder as to the fact she didn’t really like telepaths, or any power similar there to. To be called selfless made Mana’s heart clench with a feeling she couldn’t describe, wanting to say something in way of thanks, but she noticed Shina rubbing her eyes, and realized her own skin was not glowing for now reason.

The woman needed her help, and she needed it now.

"Well, if this is all sufficient then, I'd suggest you immediately take Miss Schwarz down to the Infirmary and get her taken care of. If she is up to it, afterwards, you can have Dr. McCoy examine her." pushing off the wall, Logan simply nodded, “Okay kid,” he said, turning to Mana. “Let’s go. I’m comin with, just in case,” this wasn’t because he didn’t trust Shina, no, he needed to make sure there was nothing more than the essential requirement of sleep once the military trained woman took what she needed from his fellow faculty member. There was also the need to inform Beast of all there was to know about Shina’s arrival and condition too, for, if they went down there on their own, Dr McCoy would surely be looking for answers that Mana wouldn’t be able to give him.

Walking out the door, he added, “We’ll guide yer down, Shina, just listen ter my voice, or Mana’s,” and with that, he was gone out the door, pausing long enough to wait for the two of them to catch up to him.

Small Jp Jean and Scott at the end

The trio left and Scott took this moment to slip off his glasses, his eyes tightly shut, as if they were glued that way. He rubbed his eyes lightly, marveling as always that beneath his fingers and thumb that they felt normal, slightly springy, spheroid, normal.... eyes. But there was a throbbing hum to them, an internal pulse that echoed through his skull, that wanted out, wanted to be released wantonly and recklessly. The concussive force pounded, pounded, pounded against his eyelids and another sort of man would have succumbed. Another sort of man would have allowed Miss Schwarz to take his energies if even for a moment, just to be relieved of the pressure and the pain.

Scott was not that sort of man though. The pain made him remember what he was and what he could potentially be.

Slipping his glasses back in place, Scott, who was understandably irritated at the moment, and a bit tired, not only from having to deal with the enrollment of this new and possibly very valuable resident of the school, but also from the work he had been doing before her arrival. Feeling a bit out of sorts, as he often did when dealing with people like Logan who clearly found his habits irritating and uptight, Scott reached out through his rapport with Jean, so eternally grateful that she had linked their minds in this way, knowing how often it safe his sanity, considering his tendency to bottle his emotions up into tight knots of tension.

::Jean, honey, remind me why we do this again?:: He murmured, through their link, his eyes closing behind his glasses in relief at the lifting of the weight from his shoulders as her mind caressed his.

From her favorite reading chair in her office, Jean closed her book and laid it aside. :: We do it because the world and the people in it, humans and mutants, are worth saving… even the ones who don’t like us, :: she replied, telling him things he already knew but needed to hear it again. Her TK reached through the walls as if they aren’t there and found Scott, leaning back in his chair with his injured leg propped up. Jean’s ethereal hands wrapped around his torso and gently massaged the tense muscles along his back and shoulders.

:: Everything all squared away? :: she asked softly in the back of his mind. She knew it was but having Scott say it would give him some relief.

Scott gave a soft groan as he felt her hands as firmly as if she was in the room with him. ::All the 't's crossed and the 'i's dotted,:: he murmured, relaxing into her telepathic massage, ::Mmm, how can anyone not love a telepath? They give the best back rubs,:: he teased.

Jean laughed softly into Scott’s thoughts. :: I know a lot about the mind, darling, but some things are unfathomable even by me :: She replied in a playful banter.

While Scott’s office was very efficient, it lacked any real creature comforts – the model airplanes hanging from the ceiling didn’t count, in this case; as they talked, Jean’s eyes lingered on the empty couch against her wall, just long enough for her to sit on with Scott stretched out, his head resting on her lap.

:: Why don’t you come down to my place for a little while? I’ll hang out the Do Not Disturb sign :: She said, giving him a slow mental wink.

Scott smiled at the invite and said, ::Best offer I've had all day,:: he chuckled, softly, ::Not the only one, but most certainly the only one that counts.::

She knew him, knew how to comfort him, how to talk him out of his moods, how to talk him into his moods, how to guide him through the rigors of emotionsl exploration that he had always felt that he couldn't allow himself. Shina and Logan were missing out on so many things by their distaste of telepathy, and while he understood their experiences had soured them on it, he still thought it a sad state of affairs that they could't get over it. Heh, Scott Summers, the champion of clinging to the past, thinking that someone was dwelling too much in the then and not enough in the now? What was the world coming to?

But enough of that. His beautiful bride was waiting for him, and her roaming telepathic caresses were getting a little... eager, which he did not mind in the slightest. So he pulled himself to his feet, and headed over to make her ghostly teasing count before walking was impossible, and for a while allowed himself to think of nothing but her and him.

After all, Jean knew there was more to telepathy than just mental invasion and Scott enjoyed every aspect of it.
