Time of Day: Around 9:30 in the morning
Place in the Time-line:: About a week and a half after the wedding, directly after A Moment of Normalcy.

Kate had never seen this section of the mall so crowded in her life. The moment Ari pulled into a parking spot -- way, way in the back of the parking lot -- Kate unbuckled and wiggled her way out of the car. It was still fairly early, almost ten in the morning, but already the lot was entirely full.

Oh well. Kate would deal with walking, if only to meet David and Gabriel. She stood on her tiptoes and craned her head, peering at the mall as though she could see them right there. Obviously, no such luck.

"You think they're still there?" She asked, worried, even though the paper had said the stars would be there until one. Her excitement having turned to nervousness, Kate fiddled with the image inducer that Hank had programmed for her -- normally she wouldn't have bothered, but this was a special occassion, after all.

As they set off towards the mall, Kate moving carefully so that her hair wouldn't be mussed, she wondered how they would act. David and Gabriel, really. In any case, she stared ahead, blushing -- normally this time, not the regular blush that would trickle from the tip of her scalp right down to her toes.

"Thanks for bringing me." She grinned, remembering her manners. Ari was now officially her favorite person at the school, and not just because she was bringing her to the mall. Nope, it was because she showed kindness even when it wasn't necessary. Yup. Ari was a cool person.

After several loops around the parking lot, Ari finally found a parking spot. She'd resisted the urge to curse a few times during the drive, primarily when she'd seen a parked car with it's lights on who had then sat there for five minutes and not budged. But annoying drivers be damned, she wasn't about to lose her cool in front of Kate, an impressionable youth. The whole 'lust empathy' thing would be plenty of corruption for years to come.

Getting out of the car, Ari shook off her driver's attitude and grinned at Kate, "Of course they're still there. It's still way early." Slipping her arm through Kate's, like she often did with Avery, she began heading towards the mall.

She caught Kate's blush, which in Ari's opinion was quite odd to see. Over the months she'd known Kate, she'd grown completely accustomed to her changing colors. It was expected and in Ari's opinion very pretty. A blush...it almost looked too mundane on the color-changer. Well, really she looked like a completely normal teenage girl, but still. Ari would never deny someone their image inducer, having a best friend who wore one whenever they left the mansion had given her insight on the matter. That didn't mean Ari wouldn't have chosen the unmasked form though.

Kate thanked her, and Ari nudged her side, a teasing light in her dark eyes, "Hey, no problemo. You promised me hot celebrity guys. How could I possibly say 'No'?"

Inside the mall, Ari had to keep her jaw from dropping slightly. Damn that was a lot of girls. The celebrity men were stationed in the center of the mall, and immediately it had been clear of where they had to stand in line. Walking up behind a group of pre-teen girls, who were shrieking and waving magazine pictures of the stars, Ari looked towards Kate, "Guess we're in the right place, eh?"

Ari craned her head, looking over the sea of women, and a few guys, "Hey Kate, look--Is that Gabriel?" Her eyes spotted a dark blonde head and pulled her cellphone, making sure she had enough memory to take a few pics when they got closer. She had to make sure War wouldn't see them. He'd never let her live it down.

Two older women slid up behind them, and Ari had to fight to keep from laughing. One of the women, who was clearly in her fifties, had a t-shirt with David Boreanaz's face on it. And a heart around his visage. Smoothly, she nudged Kate's arm and gave her a look, wanting her to see what she was.

Standing there in the crowd, surrounded by screaming fans of all ages -- and Kate had to giggle at the fact that there were people decades her senior waiting in line behind them. She nudged Ari right back, feeling playful and hyper. The giggling girls in front of them didn't help.

"I'm surprised no one's tried to steal their clothing yet." Kate commented thoughtfully, standing on her tiptoes to peer about for them. The women behind her must have heard her remark, for they sighed and fanned themselves, eyes a bit glazed over. Seeing this, Kate edged away, but it couldn't keep the smile off her face as she peered forward.

It was nearly half an hour before Kate and Ari inched their way to the front of the line. The closer they got, the more they could see of the stars -- a glimpse of blond hair here, a dazzling smile there. Kate fumbled for her camera just as they approached the autograph table. She looked up...and very nearly dropped the camera. Her smile faded completely.

Security guards flanked the autograph table at all sides, a smart idea -- it would have been foolish not to involve security, with these two -- making a sort of safe enclosure for one to see the celebrities and ask for autographs. But what struck Kate was the sign at the side of the nearest guard: "No Mutants Allowed" it read, in large block letters. No mutants were allowed to approach the celebrities, for photos or autographs.

For a long moment Kate could only stare at the table, frozen, unsure of what she should feel. Anger, sadness, disappointment...none of them seemed to fit. Finally, at a loss, Kate glanced up to Ari, her hands still clutching both camera and autograph book.

Kate had known, of course, that there had been a rise of mutant hysteria, but this was the first time she'd ever been directly affected -- besides being sent to live at the school. It had always seemed that the hysteria only affected those outside the shelter of the school, and of her life, but now....it had hit home, and Kate bit her lower lip, anxious.

Honestly, Ari had assumed they'd be waiting on that line for a lot longer than half an hour, but it seemed this morning that luck was on their side. That, and the two celebrities were going through the line of fans pretty quickly.

The good feeling of fortune soon dissipated however, as Ari's gaze too fell on the 'No Mutants' sign. Instantly, she felt a flame of anger spring up in her chest, the grin that'd been on her lips falling instantly. Were the celebrities anti-mutant? No, it seemed this was all coming from the security guards flanking the men. "Are they serious?" she asked, looking around at the people gathered there.

Kate looked up at her, and Ari frowned, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder and giving a squeeze. "Hey, no worries, Kate," she said with a nod. But, now what? Ari had no physical signs that she was a mutant, and Kate, was currently wearing her image inducer. They could both get past the guards with no problems, really. But Ari's desire to meet the guys had faded into the background. Right now, she could only focus on how completely unjust this was. It was as if they were in the 1950s, and segregation was rampant once more.

Truthfully, Ari had seen that the anti-mutant thing seemed to be growing larger and larger, but aside from the anti-mutant groups that had sprung up, she'd never experienced something like this. Especially not in a public place, where everyone should have been treated equally.

"Kate, what do you want to do?" she asked quietly, looking towards the smaller redhead. They were almost to the front of the line, and although Ari didn't feel much in the mood anymore, they had come all this way. Ari was aware that at any moment, Kate's image inducer might decide to flicker, but she was ready to defend the girl if it came down to anything like that. Hopefully though, it wouldn't.

Kate took a deep breath as they stepped forward another few feet. It was true that she had her image inducer on...but Kate had never broken the rules. Never. So now the law-abiding girl was stuck at the front of the line, clutching her autograph book and trying to make a decision.

Biting her lower lip, she nodded finally, just as the security guards gestured both of them forward. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and she wasn't going to let some bigotry get in the way.

Walking alongside Ari, Kate approached the table where Gabriel and David were waiting, the quietest girl that they'd probably seen all day. "Can you sign my autograph book please?" She asked, eyes downcast as she slid the book across the table.

The stars traded surprised looks. They'd been harrassed, ogled at, been the target of some serious giggling and drooling...they were used to it. Silence, on the other hand, was unnerving. As if sensing it, the guards shifted on their feet, earning an uneasy look from Kate.

Kate wasn't down enough to forget a picture, but her eyes were sad as she lowered the camera. "Thanks." She smiled, tucking it back into her bag. She leaned against Ari as they turned away, head on the other girl's shoulder. "Can we go to the pet shop?" She asked in a small voice.

Because at least she would feel at home in a pet shop.

Kate decided to continue on with meeting the celebrities, and Ari gave her shoulder another affirming squeeze. Kate was incredibly quiet, but polite, when they arrived in front of the men. Obviously, from their reactions, they hadn't expected a preteen girl to behave like she was. But Kate was often full of surprises.

Ari had to admit, although the sign thing was still bothering her immensely, this was probably the only time they'd get to meet these celebrities. Taking over for Kate's silence, she extended a hand to both, greeting them with a smile and an 'I'm a big fan'. They were each even better looking in person, seemingly opposites in appearance. One light and one dark. Gabriel in particular reminded her vaguely of someone, but she couldn't put her finger on it.

In a few quick moments, it was all over and Ari felt the redhead slump against her shoulder. "Pet shop? You got it, kiddo," said Ari brightly. She definitely loved animals, and she grinned, "I should get Wari some fish food."

When they'd gotten far enough away from the crowds, Ari looked towards Kate more seriously, "Listen Kate, that sign thing back there sucked. It's not fair. And I don't want you to think that we have to pretend to be something we're not to get accepted." It was an issue she felt very strongly about, because in general, Ari had always been very straightforward about being a mutant. Still, things seemed to be changing, growing more dangerous...

Ari frowned, and continued, "But clearly, not everyone is ready for people like us. It doesn't mean it's our fault." Ari screwed up her eyes, trying to focus on what she was trying to say. "It just means we have to pick our battles," she said with a decisive nod. "Know what I'm saying?"

[JP Kate/Ari]

As they moved away from the still-shrieking crowed, Kate heaved a sigh of exasperation – not at Ari, but at herself. She had let herself get bummed by the sign, when really it hadn’t impeded getting to meet them at all. Sure it wasn’t fair, but when was anything in life fair?

Having scolded herself, Kate forced a smile onto her face and trotted alongside Ari in a somewhat happier manner.

Ari had to admit, she and Kate’s previous good mood had dampened considerably. But maybe one day they could look back on this experience with a different attitude. Ari was doubtful, but hey she could hope. People got stronger from crap like this, and mutants were no different. They had to be resilient against prejudice. Ari was already a minority, but being a mutant only added to that. It came with the territory.

Kate didn’t say much in response to her words, but the brunette hoped that she’d gotten the drift of what she was trying to say.

They reached the pet shop, and Ari gave Kate’s shoulder a pat. “Okay fish food—“ she murmured, but her brown eyes were already landing on a puppy. When it came to cute animals, the young woman was easily blindsided.

Following Ari’s line of sight, Kate grinned and moved forward to wiggle her fingers through the wide bars of the cage. “Hello there.” She whispered, giggling as the puppy licked her fingers. Animals, she’d found a long time ago, had no prejudice against humans or mutants, something extremely comforting.

“Ari, do you think Mina would let me have a puppy?” Kate asked wistfully, remembering her Border Collie at home. It had been forever since she’d seen her dog, and it made her long for a new one.

Then just like that, she froze, barely wanting to breathe. There was a familiar tickle in the back of her head, one that made Kate sprint for the door. She was changing to her cat form.

Ari rose an eyebrow at Kate’s question, “Hmm, honestly, I don’t know. You could ask her. A lot of people at the mansion bring their animals. I don’t see why you couldn’t have one…” Come to think of it, Ari wouldn’t have minded having a puppy either. Or a chinchilla. Or a few dwarf hamsters… Okay, so pretty much anything that wasn’t a fish, which was pretty much the most boring pet in the world. Really, the only reason she was buying some food for it was because of the sentimental value it carried to her. She’d won it on she and Warren’s first outing, and they’d subsequently named it after themselves. That was reason enough to keep it fed and in a clean glass aquarium.

Ari was jarred from her thoughts as Kate suddenly leaped towards the doors. “Kate--?” she called out, turning quickly to keep the redhead in her line of sight. But where a slim redhead should’ve been standing, there was now a gingery kitty.

Oh fuck.

The change happened so quickly that one moment Kate was sprinting, and then the next she was tripping head over heels, tangled in clothing that was suddenly several times too big for her. She clawed her way out, wiggling from inside the hoodie, and found with dismay that she was furry once again.

No! She wailed, smacking the ground with a furry paw. Kate looked to Ari, apologizing, her eyes rounded. I’m sorry. She whimpered, though obviously the older girl wouldn’t be able to hear her.

Ari’s black-lined eyes widened, shock freezing her in her spot for a moment. Kate was totally kitty-fied, her little paws and head barely peeking out of the now voluminous clothing on the ground. A bevy of curse words flew through Ari’s mind, but outwardly, she was too stunned to even speak.

The brunette whipped her head around quickly, her eyes landing on the nearest employee, who was playing with the iguana on his shoulder and hadn’t noticed an unfamiliar kitty in their store.

It was not lost on her that they had just experienced some anti-mutant prejudice moments before. The fact that Kate had just turned into a cat in a place that might share the same mentality made Ari’s heart hammer in her chest.

With the employee busy, and no one in sight (thank God for the celebrities outside), Ari took the opportunity she was granted. She practically sprinted towards kitty!Kate, quickly picking her and her pile of clothing up, and did the only thing she could think of. She stuffed Kate down her vest top. And honestly, that wasn’t an easy task because it was a pretty fitted vest. Covering what her top wouldn’t with Kate’s hoodie, Ari quickly exited the store, her long legs carrying them the hell out of there.

Her kitten instincts already kicking in, Kate had caught sight of a pile of kitten toys on a shelf nearby. Whatever she had been about to do, though, was overridden when Ari snatched her up – and her clothing, thank goodness – and sprinted towards the door.

Squeaking her surprise, Kate wiggled a little, but she was trapped in the vest, and had she had her complete human mind she would have blushed profusely. Instead, she meowed pitifully, sneezing at the hoodie over her as well. It was quite an odd sensation, to say the least.

Kate hooked a paw over the edge of the vest and wiggled again, and it was a good thing she was hidden by the hoodie. Otherwise someone would have seen Ari’s vest wiggling. Run, Ari, run! She mewed, unable to stop the kitty giggle. Honestly, this wasn’t supposed to be a funny thing, but, well, it was. It was very funny. Kate wriggled around and touched her cold nose to Ari’s collarbone, jokingly.

Clutching Kate, her clothes, sneakers, her camera and autograph book, Ari knew she had to find the nearest bathroom. The fact that she’d stuffed Kate in her top was beginning to sink in as she felt the kitten’s fur against her skin. And then Kate sneezed on her. So was that like a human sneezing on you? Or a cat? Pushing those thoughts aside, Ari resisted a groan, her focus on getting them to the restrooms before Kate suddenly turned back to her human form. That…would just be terrible. Public nakedness, and from an underage girl no less… When you were a mutant even going to the mall could be a dangerous thing.

Kate was moving around and Ari spoke from the side of her mouth, “God, Kate, are there ants in your pants?” Of course, she realized that Kate wore no pants, since she was still clutching them in her hands, “…N-nevermind.”

Quickly finding her way to the ladies room just as an elderly woman was coming out, Ari flashed a quick smile, attempting to edge past her. The little lady looked at her critically, her beady blue eyes moving to look at the clothes that Ari was carrying. Obviously thinking the wrong thing, she shook her head in shame, tsking at Ari.

Kate chose that moment to press her cold nose against her collarbone and Ari jumped, letting out a slight squeak in response. Ignoring the elderly woman and fighting the urge to burst out laughing, the young woman moved into the bathroom and quickly locked the door behind her.

Putting Kate down on the sink, because frankly the floors were gross, she let out a low laugh, but quickly regained a sort of seriousness to her tone, “Okay Kate, if there was ever a time to switch back on command, this would be it.” She glanced towards the door, slightly worried that the elderly woman might call the mall rent-a-cops on her for theft. She had looked pretty random carrying around clothes like that with no store bag. “What do you say, kiddo?” she asked, scratching Kate behind the ear. “It’s now, or we risk getting you into the car and having you switch midway…”

Thankfully the trip was short, because Kate found that she had an itch on her back that really needed scratching. To scratch it right then and there, squashed into the vest, was to make even more strange movements that onlookers would think completely odd. There was a worrying few moments in which an old lady coming out of the restroom had cornered them, and Kate had thought it all over, but then Ari was allowed by.

The moment Kate was set down on the sink, she shook her fur out and looked up at Ari, tilting her head as she listened. Well, that did make sense. She didn’t exactly want to change out in the mall proper, because that would just be embarrassing.

And oh, God, what if it happened in front of the celebrities? Though cats had no ability to blush, Kate certainly felt her cheeks heat up in complete mortification. No, that wouldn’t be good at all. She carefully settled onto the corner of the sink, where she could easily balance, and scrunched her nose up.

Then she froze. There was a knock at the door, and voices. Kate opened her mouth to yell “In a minute!” only to shut it promptly when a yowl came out. Her eyes scrunched shut again. She had to change, and now.

Another JP with Ari and Kate

Ari had always believed in Murphy’s Law, finding that often, whatever could go wrong absolutely did go wrong. This was another case in point, the hard knock on the door causing Ari’s eyes to widen and look anxiously at Kate. Make that Kitty!Kate. Apparently she still couldn’t switch at will, which frankly was bad, bad news for the two of them.

“Someone’s in here—“ she called, a bit annoyed that someone was knocking in the first place. Honestly, people had the worst timing sometimes. And it wasn’t like this was the only toilet in the entire mall… A gruff voice called through the door, one that definitely belonged to a man. Or possibly a very masculine female... “Open up, Miss, we know what you’re up to—“ We…that meant more than one.

For a moment, Ari could only feel her heart thumping wildly in her chest. How the hell was she was supposed to explain her way out of this one? Usually she relied on intelligence to help her out of tricky situations. But her brain was completely failing her. Her dark eyes moved over the bathroom, looking for a way out, or something to spring to mind. She had a kitten, some clothes, a camera, her purse, and the ability to make glass. A complicated image of mirrors and camera flash going off and blinding the men at the door flitted through her mind. “Ugh, ridiculous,” she hissed at herself, annoyed that the very best she could think of was something straight out of a bad movie.

“One moment,” she said, her voice pleasantly sweet. But the look on her face was anything but. “Kate, come on—“ she hissed, looking urgently towards the kitten. Her eyes moved towards the trashcan, and she frowned. She could stuff all of Kate’s things in there until they could return to retrieve it…but what about Kate?

Ari grasped her purse and began shifting stuff aside, holding it open to the kitten, “Come on Kate, jump in—“ Right now, she couldn’t afford to think of Kate transforming out in the mall area. One problem at a time, please and thanks.

The pounding on the door made Kate squeeze her eyes tighter, paws tightening around the faucet that she was using as leverage so that she wouldn’t fall off the sink in the process.

There! Grinning triumphantly, Kate pressed the mental switch that she’d learned to locate, feeling her limbs lengthening and her mind changing. After only about five seconds she was human again, crouching naked on the sink and trembling from the cold.

Blushing profusely, she scrambled down from atop the sink, dressing as quickly as she could. Thank goodness she was with Ari, someone she trusted, otherwise there would have been a good chance that she wouldn’t have changed back at all.

As soon as her clothing was back on, Kate glanced to Ari and opened the door, finding that two mall security guards were standing there, blocking her way. They looked surprised that there were two people there in the bathroom. “Young lady, your friend there has just been reported for shoplifting. We would like to talk to her…what were you doing in there?”

And, thinking quickly, Kate did the best thing she knew at the moment: she burst into tears. “We just got here and I-I just got my first period and...and....all Ari had was a TAMPON!” She wailed, hopefully putting on a convincing show for them. One of the guards actually stepped back, she was pleased to see.

“And I didn't know how...and...and so she turned her back and told me how...” Kate trailed off, sniffling, not meeting the guards’ eyes. She was the perfect vision of a distraught pre-teen girl.

Thank God for whatever training Kate had been doing, because as soon as Ari saw a flash of pale skin, she knew they were saved. “Thank you, thank you, Kate—“ she said hurriedly, relief coursing through her for a lovely moment. Gathering Kate’s clothes, Ari turned her back to not further embarrass the preteen, and handed her the pile of clothes. She wasn’t about to get too relaxed though. She’d learned never to let down her guard in these crazy ass unpredictable situations she always tended to find herself in.

Kate was dressed in a matter of moments, and Ari let out a breath of relief, taking her purse and running a hand through her red-hued bangs, attempting to regain some semblance of normalcy for a moment. Kate unlocked the door and wrenched it open, and the security guards looked none too friendly.

[JP Numero 3]

Reported for shoplifting? Damn that old lady… She’d better be lucky she wasn’t anywhere nearby or Ari would’ve kicked her in the hip. Okay, she really wouldn’t have. But she would’ve imagined doing it.

Standing at her full height, Ari resisted fuming too obviously at being called a shoplifter to her face. Honestly, they see a Latina with some clothes and just have to think she’s stealing stuff…

“Actually, sir—“ she began, about to pull some reasoning out of her behind. Thank goodness Kate was young… they could get away with more than if Ari had been in there with a fellow eighteen year old. No doubt they’d automatically assume they were up to no good. Either lesbians getting it on in a public place, or thieving girls planning a heist… it wouldn’t have looked good.

Whatever Ari might have pulled, Kate outdid her by a hundredfold. She pulled the period card and honestly, Ari knew that eventually this story would be told a million times because it was bordering on hilarious and insane all at the same time. Keeping a straight face, Ari placed a hand on Kate’s shoulder, “Yes, sir. I’m sorry; there must have been some mistake…”

But there wasn’t any need to say much more. Kate’s ‘woman problems’ and tears had successfully freaked out both guards, who had put their hands up and backed up significantly, as if urging the young girl to keep any more information to herself.

One of the guards frowned, looking away from Kate as though she was wearing something indecent and cast an obvious look around the bathroom. Whatever he was looking for, wasn’t there. Obviously, Kate was wearing the stuff Ari had been seen carrying. Frowning once more, he backed out of the bathroom, looking sternly at Ari and still not looking at Kate. “Alright, you two better…you’d both…just go—“ he said, a tone of aggravation in his voice at not having anything better to say. Ari quickly hiked a smile on her face and pushed Kate to walk quickly past the men.

“Don’t look back, Kate,” she said into the younger girl’s ear once they were far enough, her gaze on the path ahead of them and the doors that signified freedom, wishing she’d parked closer to the front entrance.

By God, it had worked. Her stupid story had worked. Kate fought to keep the smile from her face, and instead kept the tears coming slowly as she sniffled. She didn’t need any further urging to leave the mall, and easily kept pace with Ari as they steered out of the mall.

As soon as they climbed into the car and shut the doors, however, Kate burst out laughing. She buried her face into her hands, pulling the image inducer off so that she would shine golden in happiness as she fought for breath between the giggles.

“That,” she informed Ari between laughs, “was so awesome!” She snickered, tears literally rolling down her face. “I…you’re so cool!” Finally Kate got her breath back, and beamed up at Ari. “Um…sorry if I got fur down your shirt.” The very image made her burst out in a fresh bit of giggles.

Ari had fished her keys out long before they’d reached the car, and as soon as they were inside, she locked the doors and let out a huge breath. Kate burst out laughing beside her, and honestly, it didn’t take much for Ari to burst out laughing right along with her. It all just seemed so far fetched…so completely crazy and Ari knew that if they retold the tale it would sound almost made-up. Well, maybe to people that weren’t mutants, that is.

Clutching her stomach, Ari leaned her head on the steering wheel, lost in laughter until it began to hurt and even then attempting to calm herself only brought on another bout of the giggles. Looking at Kate, who was shining a beautiful golden hue, Ari had to admit that she far preferred natural Kate to image-induced Kate. A golden hue like that…it couldn’t have been achieved with even the best quality makeup a movie set had to offer. Those people in the mall with their anti-mutant signs had no idea of the beauty and good that could come from their abilities.

Fishing out Kate’s camera, which she’d stuffed into her bag previously, she quickly snapped a picture of the beaming girl. “Me?!” she said between laughs, “Kate, you totally saved our butts. That mall cop was so ready to ban me from stepping foot in there ever again.” She shook her head, obviously already focusing on the lighthearted fact that they’d made it out without trouble, rather than the more severe consequences they might have faced.

At Kate’s apology, Ari glanced down at her shirt, another laugh falling from her full lips. “Sorry I had to stick you down there—spur of the moment got you to second base,” she teased with a grin, her hand moving to brush off the bits of gingery fur that had settled on the dark material of her clothes.

Shaking her head, she mused out loud, “Avery and Riva are going to love this one…” Pulling on her seatbelt and making sure Kate had done the same, Ari put the key into the ignition, completely ready to head back to the mansion.
