Strange bedfellows..; Synch moves in to his new dorm.

Time of day: March 27th Mid-Morning
Place in the time-line A week after Brimstone

Synch had finally moved into his new dorm room and at last he could sleep in his own bed and have his own stuff in its place. The guest rooms were nice and all but Synch always felt like he was just a guest like he never really belonged but now he was finally going to have his own space. Even if he did have to share with some other guy called Titan. Everett was not an expert on Greek mythology but he was sure that the Titans were like some great god type people so this guy should be interesting to meet.

Still Synch could not shake the images from the attack at Mutant Ville or Mutant Town whatever it was called. Every time Synch closed his eyes he saw death and destruction on a scale he’d never seen before. The news had reported about the incident for days after, commenting on the rescue efforts and the military presence AKA the huge robot like Sentinel that he had seen. That was something else he often dreamt about. That thing chasing him, hunting him and Synch powerless to fight it.
Synch stood outside the door to his new dorm room and took a deep breath to calm his nerves. Thoughts of that day still haunted him so Synch tried to put it out of his mind. He gave a firm nock upon the door to see if his roommate was in then pushed the door open with his foot. “Hello. Is anyone home?”

Engrossed in his homework Vincent looked up in surprise when a voice filtered through the wood of the door. Mr. Summers had told him what must have been yesterday that he would have a roommate. To be truthful, Vincent was looking forward to the company, even though he was concerned that they might not get along. There had been five people in the Starkova apartment, and he was used to a certain amount of contact with people. It would be nice to have someone to talk to, even if it was brief conversations.

“Hello. Is anyone home?”

“Hello,” Vincent said as he rose, marking the place in his book before striding across the room to open the door fully for Synch.

Many of the photos Vincent had originally put up on the walls and on his desk were stored out of sight in his bags. The ones he had up were his favorites—things to remind him of home, not merely to make it impossible to forget that he was at the school instead of with his family back in New York. He had done his best to ensure that the room was comfortable instead of clinical.

”I’m Vincent Starkova…Titan. Do you need any help with your things?”

Looking at Everett he smiled, genuinely.

“Yeah...if you can grab anything it would be greatly appreciated.” Synch had seemed to accumulate much junk on it travels as an extreme sports participant. Stumbling forward Synch juggled bags and boxes all at once until he managed to drop everything that Titan didn’t take onto an empty bed he assumed was his own. A box spilt out over the box as it slipped from his grasp. Photo’s and books sprawled across the mattress making a mess. Everett didn’t seem to care, he was just glad to have put the heavy box down at last.

Everett dropped his bags and offered his hand to his new roommate. “The names Everett Thomas but people call me Synch. Can’t imagine why.” He said with a big wide grin. Anyone who knew of him also knew of his ability to adapt his aura and actually copy and mutant power. “I guess this bunk is mine right?” Everett took the time to look around his new room and to truly size up his new roommate.

“I only have one rule. No calling me Tom or Eve. You do and we are gonna have problems. Ok from the size of you I guess you could pummel me into stew without breaking a sweat so all I can do is offer bribes.” Everett grinned and pulled out a large chocolate bar and offered it to Vincent. “How about it?”

“Yeah...if you can grab anything it would be greatly appreciated.”

“Of course.” Vincent grabbed armfuls, and held them aloft while Everett entered the room. He was glad to help as always, and turning he put the bags down on his roommate’s side of the room without further fuss. Glancing at the broken box he inwardly shrugged, though he was happy to know that he wasn’t the only one who had brought a lot of photos with him.

“The names Everett Thomas but people call me Synch. Can’t imagine why.”

Vincent smiled too, and shook Everett’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“I guess this bunk is mine right?”

“Yes, it seems that way.”

Teasing the other man a little Vincent glanced around the room too. Inwardly he heaved a sigh of relief. His roommate seemed nice, which was better than he had hoped. Vincent would have been polite to Everett anyway, but it was still good to be able to relax just a little about something that had been worrying him since he had found out that he had someone to share space with.

“I’ll remember that. And please—I’ve never pummeled anyone in my life.”

Vincent blinked in surprise, but took the chocolate bare delicately. He put it on his desk for after a Danger Room session. It was important that he have a lot of carbs after using his powers to such a great extent.

“Thank you…you can call me Vince, I suppose.”

He didn’t want to yet mention his other nicknames. Only his family and friends called him those things, and Everett was hardly such a thing yet.

Synch pushed his stuff either off the bed or around it until he could fall onto it with a deep sigh of comfort. A lazy sedated smile crept across his lips as he relished the feeling of finally having a place to sleep that was his and not just a guest room. He stretched out and just absorbed the feeling of finally belonging and the company of Vince. In a spur of energy and enthusiastic power Synch sprang up from his bed and shuffled things around.

“So how about the tour of the new digs?” The room was large compared to his room back home but Everett had spent most of his teenage life on the road travelling from competition to competition, living in motels and tour buses. As great as that life was, Everett was glad to have someplace stable and permanent. Still he missed the attention and crowds cheering his name but with his mutation now active things had changed forcing him to change with it. Now Synch had a chance for a normal life. Well as normal as a life could be being a mutant in a school of mutants.

“I do have a question if you don’t mind. Why Titan?” Synch asked rather curiously. “I know they were these god like figures from Greek mythology but I’m guessing that you’re not all godlike right.”

“A tour? It’s all what it looks like, really. Closet, computer...” He nodded to each in turn; “There’s room inspections on the first and third Tuesday every month. I’ll show you the rest of the school after lunch I suppose.”

Vincent resumed sitting at his desk, and fiddled idly with his stack of text books. He glanced at a candid photo taken of him with a few friends. They were grinning over milkshakes at a diner, laughing at a shared joke that he could hardly recall. He did miss them, constantly, but since Jean had visited and given him a wake-up call as to his homesickness he had gotten much better. It was more of a vague longing. Few people knew him like the friends he had left behind. His loneliness was disappearing every day. It took effort but the rewards were great.

Synch spoke again, drawing Vincent’s thoughts to the present.

“I do have a question if you don’t mind. Why Titan?” Synch asked rather curiously. “I know they were these god like figures from Greek mythology but I’m guessing that you’re not all godlike right.”

“No, I’m not,” he smiled. “My powers are physical—in my present state I can lift as much as an eighteen wheeler with few adverse effects on my body. The titans were giants among men, and my height isn’t a product of my mutation…it’s also a reference to Atlas, who was a child of the titans. What about you?”

It was still very strange to talk freely of something he had kept a secret from everyone he knew. To Vincent it was as though they were trading, or playing a game, and he still wasn’t very sure of himself. It felt like bragging, and if anyone knew Vincent they knew that he rarely if ever did that.

Synch Looked up and watched his new roommate as he explained the reference to his code name. Personally he could see how people might call him Titan given that he was a big mother and Synch had suspected that his mutation may lean towards some physical strength or physical toughness. It was not always evident to the naked eye but some mutants did have some physical resemblance of their actual mutant power. Unlike Titan Synch held no hint of what his power truly was.

“Me?” Synch closed his eyes in an attempt to remember the scientific explanation he was given upon his examination when he first came to the mansion. “I can synchronize my psychic aura to another mutant and copy their power and make it my own. I can also use that very same ability to track a mutant I have synchronized with as well.” Synch grinned at his required knowledge and leaned back onto his bed.

“Personally I think I got gimped in the whole mutant power category but I am really no threat to anyone with another mutant around to synch with.” For some bizarre reason Everett stood up and wavered ever so slightly. “Oh head rush.” After a few moments he turned and began unpacking his things and placing them neatly into draws and shelves.

Everett could see that Titan was a little uptight for his own good. This new edition to the mansion wasn’t someone to shirk his responsibilities or bunk off class but he did love his fun so Everett now had a personal mission to improve his roommate’s disposition. “You don’t have to worry about me copying your power mate. People seem to take it sort of personal like I’m stealing their identity or something weird like that. Synch shrugged at the odd thought and continued unpacking the box before him. In truth he didn’t like taking other peoples powers because it always reaffirmed the truth that he was indeed a mutant but without an active power within him Synch could pretend he was just a normal kid in a normal school.

“I can synchronize my psychic aura to another mutant and copy their power and make it my own. I can also use that very same ability to track a mutant I have synchronized with as well.”

“That’s very interesting.” Vincent smiled, unsure of what else to say.

Everyone was so different that from a biological stand-point he wasn’t sure how it made sense. From the science classes he had taken it had seemed that the mutations an animal or plant would develop for survival would give them an edge on the competition. But human mutants were so vastly diverse that it was hard to think that all of them would be helpful. Some made hardly any sense at all and seemed to hinder their users instead of aiding them. It was confusing, and something he would ask Mr. Grey-Summers about when they both weren’t busy.

“Personally I think I got gimped in the whole mutant power category but I am really no threat to anyone with another mutant around to synch with.” For some bizarre reason Everett stood up and wavered ever so slightly. “Oh head rush.”

“I think that could be helpful, though, if you were ever in a fight with a Brotherhood member. And unless the FOH knew you were a mutant beforehand then they probably wouldn’t target you.”

Vincent continued to toy with the things on his desk. It wasn’t that he felt the compulsion to be neat; it was merely that with a roommate he had to be aware of his space more. Prior to Everett’s coming Vincent had spread some things out on the other bed and desk when he had wanted to stretch out some. It hadn’t been something he had given much thought to, but now there was another body to contend with and be careful around. The idea of hurting his roommate accidentally made his stomach clench.

“You don’t have to worry about me copying your power mate. People seem to take it sort of personal like I’m stealing their identity or something weird like that.

“I don’t think you would like it very much…I have to be aware of how strong I am at all times, and moderate myself constantly so that I don’t hurt others. The second time I used my powers without thinking, I left a hand-print on the hood of a car.”

Synch huffed at Vince’s attempt to undermine his own power. The idea of being a mutant had been something that happened to someone else even when his powers first manifested. He figured if he stayed away from mutants he could have a normal life but the risk of absorbing some random power from the crowd was too dangerous. So here he was in a school full of mutants with cool and interesting powers. Having access to all of these powers Synch was of two minds about copying them. Some mutants actually saw their unique power as a statement or symbol of their identity so he copying it was like him taking something more than just their power.

With Vince’s lack of enthusiastic rebuttal about his powers Everett let the topic about his pathetic abilities drop. “What I would have given to have your skills at school. John Snider wouldn’t have known what had hit him.” Synch said with a satisfying grin as he made a swift uppercut motion. “Little git.”

Synch spent little time packing away books and clothes. Most of his garb was t-shirts or heavy gangster hoodies with various slogans or pictures on them. His fashion sense left something to be desired it also followed a certain line. Synch liked casual and liked freedom of movement. One of his boxes his quickly shoed under his bed and out of the attention of Vince. The hidden box was his memories of everything he had taken from him when his mutancy was revealed to the public.

“What I would have given to have your skills at school. John Snider wouldn’t have known what had hit him.” Synch said with a satisfying grin as he made a swift uppercut motion. “Little git.”

Vincent grimaced at the notion. Something Xavier’s taught was responsibility when using one’s powers, which was something Synch didn’t seem to understand. However he didn’t say anything, just a quick smile, and went back to organizing his desk.

He wasn’t quite clear about Synch’s history but had heard a few rumors from the other students. As a child Vincent had been bullied because of his accent, and in his teens he had been unofficially dubbed the ‘Russian Import’ by his classmates.

He could empathize, but after years of that casual teasing he had gotten used to it. No one had picked fights with him after he had taken to working out, and while he hadn’t been the most popular kid in school, he had been well-liked by just about everyone because of his good nature.

Glancing up, he saw Everett’s choice of wardrobe. Some of the people in his neighborhood had dressed like that, and it peaked his interest. The subculture of rappers and hip-hop artists was mystifying to him, but then again so was the notion of country clubs.

“Where are you from, by the way?”

Growing up in a poorer part of New York had been interesting. Some would have aptly dubbed it a ghetto, and that was what it was when one took into consideration the demographic. The neighborhood was Slavic-exclusive, with generally low incomes. Outsiders were met with hostility which could mean the police turning a blind eye to any possible mafia involvement. The borough hadn’t yet denigrated that much but it was conceivable. It wasn’t something he was especially proud of when it came up in casual conversation, but he wasn’t going to sugarcoat it for anyone.

Synch rolled his eyes at Vince’s grimace and continued with his unpacking. There was so much more he’d wanted to bring with him but being at school and with limited space, Everett had to be careful about his baggage. The heap of posters that he’d left upon his walls and all of the little things that made him feel at home. Synch was used to travel and new locations but being here on a more permanent basis was very appealing. A place he could finally call home until he graduated and got his life finally on track.

The first thing however was Vincent. He seriously needed to lighten up if they were going to live in the same room together. Sure Synch would respect if privacy and play house but Vince acted like he had a broom up his butt. He didn’t seem to get or appreciate even the simplest of jokes or witty quips.

“Me? I’m from St Louise born and bred. Never spent much time at home in recent years but its still home.” Synch really never felt at home anywhere since he began participating in the extreme games competitions. He never felt like he belonged anywhere accept when he was doing something dangerous or stupid. It was a strange sensation to feel homeless in a sea of people who cared about you. Still Everett felt happy about his life and comfortable in his new situation.

“So any house rules I should know about. No parties, no ladies.” Synch said with a wink.

“Leave a tie on the doorknob if you’re getting some,” Vincent joked. God…his sister would love Synch.

Vincent could sense Synch’s annoyance and ignored it. His sister was the same way when he didn’t laugh at her jokes, and usually she just moved on. But St. Louis? That was interesting. Vincent hadn’t often left New York City, and his time at the school was the most he had been away from home. He liked New York, despite the crime rates and the rest of it. It was a thriving metropolis where something was always going on. It was very hard to be bored there.

He tugged some old fliers for a few rock concerts out of a textbook and examined them briefly before tossing them away. He still wasn’t sure if he wanted to go to a new venue, which his friends back home were excited about.

As much as he loved music, the idea of going to a hardcore show and facing the inevitable of being called out by people in the mosh pit wasn’t something he looked forward to. And there was always that one stupid person who called him names and tried to pick a fight after.

“I can’t think of any others."

Synch actually stared at Vincent with an open mouth completely lost for words. Such a comment from his room mate seemed impossible but there it was and Synch couldn't help but burst into a loud snigger. it took a few minutes for Synch to remember how to breath and get air back into his lungs. "Some how I don't think Jennifer would be after that. just yet."

Still sudden thoughts of Jennifer caused him to thnk abou ther and the suddenness of her advances. A random kiss in the dark and then a strop about him leaving was not much of relationship. In all honesty Everett wasn't even sure he wanted a steady relationship with her for the immediate future. He didn't even know what he wanted tomorrow let alone the future.

"Well I'll try and respect your space and try not to piss you off. DOn't want you popping my head while I sleep now do I." Again he was grinning at his own joke since most people didn't actually find him funny but in a round about it it was his way of breaking the ice. Acting the fool and getting attention gave him the opportunity to meet and greet. On the down side it did give people the wrong idea of him most of the time.

"Well I'll try and respect your space and try not to piss you off. DOn't want you popping my head while I sleep now do I."

The idea of doing that to someone would be extremely messy, not to mention disgusting. As much as Vincent enjoyed gore in movies it was a whole different matter when it came to real life.

He couldn’t ever see himself doing that, even out of anger. Synch’s insistence that Vincent would consider harming him was frustrating, but perhaps it was just part of his personality.

“I’m sorry if this isn’t to your liking, but I’ve lived in…fear, for a long while, that I would harm a member of my family or my friends accidentally without conscious thought. Everything I touch I can break, and unlike many mutants I don’t have the ability to turn my powers off and on. I can appreciate your sense of humor, Everett, but I would never think to hurt another person no matter how much they antagonized me.”

Vincent, having kept his voice placid, looked down again at his desk before returning to organizing. Let Everett grow annoyed at him. Vincent didn’t much care—the other young man’s or thoughts emotions weren't his to control. The hope that they would get along was still there, but he was beginning to think that this relationship might have some tensions to it. For both of their sakes he hoped not.

“I have been approached frequently after concerts by drunken idiots wanting to pick a fight. Could you imagine agreeing to fight someone, with abilities that could easily cause them grievous harm?”

Synch could appreciate Vince’s concerns and worries about his powers but Everett really was only trying to alleviate some tension and have some fun. Vince would learn sooner or later that Synch made jokes about most things normally as a way of coping with strange or difficult situations. Moving into a dorm room of a mutant school with a mutant who could bench press the state of Texas was something of a big deal to him. It was kind of ironic that his power was only useful around other mutants so being at a school full of them made him a freak. Among a human he could live a relatively normal life.

“Listen Vince. You can rest easy now. I’ve broken my body more times than I can count so pain and injury isn’t much of an issue for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking to break myself in half only push my own boundaries.” Synch turned and looked at Vince seriously for a moment. “Accidents happen. I know I’ve been in enough of them.”

“Seriously though. Have you ever thought of playing professional football? You could make loads of cash. I could manage you I got the contacts in professional sport to take you all the way to the top.” Synch grinned and dropped his arm across Vince’s shoulders and looked at the wall imagining their names in lights. “Imagine it. A crowd cheering your name as you run onto the field. Your own personal battle ground. A girl on every arm, parties every weekend, Cars and more money than god.”

Synch was now grinning wickedly at the opportunities. Still he was only making a joke but the thought of pinching his power and becoming a professional footballer was an appealing idea. “You could be a real celebrity, a legend in your own life time. Wouldn’t that be a good life accomplishment.”
