Time of Day: Noon in New York; around 5 PM in Scotland Place in the Timeline: April 10th It felt to Rosie like she never saw her father anymore. Oh, this wasn't the case at all, but to a four-year-old who considered a day to be forever, it certainly seemed like it. In her mind, something had to be done about it, and during lunch on this particular day she slid from her spot at the table and wandered off, determined to find him. The first place she thought to look was her father's office, where he seemed to spend most of his time doing boring stuff. The little girl stood on tiptoe and knocked carefully, as she had been taught, and when there was no answer she bit her lower lip and nudged the door open. "Papa?" She called softly, taking exactly three steps into the room and halting. There was no sign of him at all, and the only movement inside the room besides Rosie was the soft whirring of a machine on the desk. Curious, Rosie inched towards the machine, being sure to keep her hands behind her back. She'd broken stuff before, all of it accidental, but she was sure that her papa wouldn't be pleased if she broke this shiny thing. Sensing her movement, the machine popped on. "Connection to the Muir Island server complete..." It intoned in a smooth, metallic voice. "Hold period cancelled." Then, to Rosie's great surprise, a hologram popped up, and the little girl gasped aloud. This was the best machine ever. She peered even closer, fiddling with one of the pigtails that her mother had put in her hair that morning. "Um...hiya!" |

The image that appears is of a young man in a white labcoat, at somewhat of a distance from the hologram projector and a bit off-center, so he's not quite fully on the screen. He was in the middle of slipping a small vial of... something into his pocket when the projector turned on, and it clearly surprised him. "Oh! Oh, um... uh... hold on a moment," the young man said in a well-to-do British accent as his fingers roamed the mother board in front of him. He found the button he was looking for and gave it a quick push. "Rahne, you have a call in the teleconference room," he said, his voice multiplying and echoing as it sounded both over the direct connection and the intercom speakers behind it. "Um, she'll be right with you, little girl." He ran his left hand through his thinning hair nervously, and adjusted his glasses. "Aaaany second now." "Who is it, Fred?" the voice of a young woman comes through as her grainy silhouette appears in the doorway behind him. "I dunno, some American kid, little girl," the young man answered, turning back to face her. "And so you assumed it's f'r me," the young lady said with a slight sigh as she stepped into the room, now becoming visible through the image. She is not in wolf form at this moment. "Alright, lemme talk to her. An' I do hope that whatever ye got in yuir pocket there yuir takin' over to me mum." "Oh! Uh, yes, of course. Well, best be off." Fred marched out briskly, clearly embarrassed that he got caught so easily. Rahne positions herself in front of the monitor and looked over the little girl, a smile spreading across her face, one of recognition. "Now I know I've seen that face b'fore. Yuir li'l Rosie, aren't ye? Yuir ma an' da sent me photos. Whatever ye callin' out here for?" |

When the hologram began to speak, Rosie gave a little squeak and backpedaled hastily, having not expected it to even make noise. She soon recovered, however, and was soon right back into the face of the hologram, eyes wide. "You're see-through." She whispered, resisting the urge to poke the hologram. Instead, her eyes and nose scrunched up in concentration as she listened to what the hologram was saying. A different figure had appeared, this of a young woman, and Rosie tilted her head. If these were just moving pictures, they were awfully good ones. "You know me?" Rosie gasped, surprised as she went to drag a chair over for height. Climbing into it, she settled there with her legs crossed Indian-style, trying to figure out what she could possibly say to a moving picture who knew her. "Yeah...I'm Rosie." Her mismatched eyes wide, she fidgeted again. "I didn't mean to call...it just sorta...popped up when I came." She made a motion with her hands, showing just how random it had seemed. Slowly, Rosie was realizing what this was, and she tilted her head. "Who're you?" She asked, curiosity making her forget just how strange this was. "Is this sorta like a...like a phone thing?" That would make sense. Besides that, her papa had actually mentioned talking to one of his friends earlier, and she had to wonder if this was that friend. "You're pretty." The little girl added hastily, just in case she'd offended the lady with her question. Rosie reached out a small finger to touch the woman's hair, just to see if it felt like hair as well, but the machine gave her a warning beep and she withdrew it quickly. "Kinda like my mama, but different." |

"Must'a activated redial, I s'ppose," Rahne said with a small smile. "An' aye, 'tis a... 'phone thing'. Careful with th' hands, though. I dinnae think yuir s'pposed to touch th' projector." She opened her mouth slightly, and held up a finger, in a 'wait a minute' motion and began tapping some keys on the mother board. "Explore... open file... ah, ah, here we go." In a window hovering above Rahne's head and to the left, a slideshow of photos appeared and began scrolling by. Rosie with Scott and Jean. The party thrown for her return to the mansion and her adopted parents' custody. A pinata full of flying fish. "See? They sent me photos. I've known yuir ma and da since I was a li'l girl m'self. They never come t' visit anymore, though. Me name's Rahne. Kinda like water from th' sky, but spelled different." Rahne's smile widened as Rosie said she was pretty, and she nodded her head. "An' I see yuir quite a pretty lass yuirself. But actually, 'tis good ye called. I was plannin' on callin' soon m'self. Somethin's come up, an' I need t' speak with your da for a bit. Is he around? 'Tis quite important, I'm afraid." |

The confirmation that this was indeed a phone made Rosie nod, her curiosity satisfied for the moment. However, it didn't mean that she was entirely used to it, and she gave another squeak as a series of photos appeared in the hologram. "That's us!" She squealed, leaning in so that she could see the pictures floating by. The day was one she remembered well, and the fact that her papa had been proud enough to show the pictures to other people made her own little chest swell in pride. "Rahne." Rosie repeated shyly, testing it out. It was a nice name, one that was easy to say and nice to think about. "I like it." She blushed a little upon being called pretty herself, and twisted around in her seat looking for her papa. "Papa?!" She called, her thoughts moving back to where her father was. "Ya...ya got a call!" It was weird, and she didn't know exactly what to say. After all, it wasn't every day that there was a hologram in the room. Or maybe it was, around the mansion. Rosie turned back around, settling back, though her mind was worried over how busy her father had gotten. "Why's he so busy?" She asked, looking to Rahne in worry. "He never plays anymore.." |

"He's an important man, like me mum," Rahne said with a slight sigh, having lived to a certain degree with that problem for a very long time in regards to her own adopted mother, Moira. "But ye know, the man needs t' take a break every now and again, if'n yuir askin' me. Cannae be all business all the time, after all. I'm sure that once your da's done savin' the world, he'll play with ye all ye want." Rahne stretched her arms widely, lifting them high above her head and bringing them down to a rest at her sides. She watched the little girl's face carefully, taking in the details. She was a cute one, that's for sure. Part of Rahne was concerned that this young girl was going to be her entire class whenever she got finished helping the lab close down. Not that it would be a bad thing to have just the one girl, but Rahne's class activities were usually geared towards a group of children as opposed to one. She could adapt if she had to. "I c'n always talk t' him later, though. Or I can jus' leave a message. Either way is fine. I'll talk with you f'r now. Which is a good thing, as it turns out that I may be meetin' ye in person real soon, way things are goin' out here. Tell me, Rosie, are there any other kiddies like yuirself at the school?" |

Rosie gave a little nod at Rahne's words, trying her very best to be a big girl even though she wanted to play. She fidgeted with her pigtail. "Yeah..I...I guess." She brightened. "He's so kewl, 'cause he lets me see the Blackbird!" The Blackbird jet was obviously a source of awe for Rosie; while she knew that she was never, ever supposed to touch it, it was an honor just to be allowed to look. Rosie perked up even more when Rahne mentioned that she would be coming soon. "Really?" She smiled broadly, pleased at the idea of yet another person at the mansion. There were so many there already, so many that she didn't even know everyone's names, but that didn't really matter. "Oh...I'll tell Papa." She added, remembering that Rahne needed to leave a message. Rosie would relay it, too, understanding how important it might be. She considered the question. "It's me 'n' Meghan 'n' Valyn...they're a little bigger." Only by a year or so, but most kids didn't take age into consideration. They just paid attention to who might play with them. Rosie grinned, wiggling again. "Betcha they'd like ya. Oh! D'ya have a power, like m' whooshes?" Rosie waved her hands, indicating her telekinesis. It would make sense if the older girl did, because after all, Rosie reasoned, they lived in a very special place. |

"Ah, the Blackbird. 'Tis probably not the same one they used to come over on. Or, rather, he prob'ly fixed it up quite a bit. He used t' try t' fiddle with me mum's lab machines all th' time. Well, he asked to," Rahne spoke with a small smile, nostalgic and wistful all at once, remembering times gone by. "Aye. Yuir da said he could use a preschool teacher over there at yuir school, and well, it just so happens that I am a preschool teacher," she gestured to her collarbone with a sharp jerk of her left thumb, a small smirk on her face. "I told him I wasn't goin' t' be able t' do it when he asked, but, well, things have changed since then an' it looks like me calender's opened up. It's why I want t' talk t' him, make sure the offer's still open." She made it a point to count on her fingers, one, two, three, as Rosie started rattling off names. Clearly, she expected there to be more than three, but that wouldn't be a problem. "Three o' ye? I suppose I could work with that. 'Tis more 'n what I got now, that's f'r sure." A small smirk spread across her face as Rosie asked about her powers. "Well, as a matter o' fact, I do. I, Rosie Summers, am a werewolf." She spread her fingers up as she brought her hands to her face to emphasise the word "werewolf". "I c'n show ye if'n ye want. Ye just gotta promise me ye won't be scared. I dinnae bite, especially over the telephone." |

Rosie tilted her head thoughtfully. "Papa's always playin' with the plane." She informed Rahne with a grin, remembering just how happy her father seemed when he was fiddling around with the Blackbird's mechanics. He'd even fixed up her toy plane so it was more realistic, and she had the feeling that if anything was broken, he could fix it. The little girl brightened even more when the older girl said that she would be teaching preschool. "Papa 'n' Mama told me I get to start school." She beamed. Twisting around in her seat, she looked around again for Scott. "Papa! Phone!" Rosie tried calling, remembering to use her 'inside voice' to a certain extent. She leaned forward at the notion that Rahne was a werewolf, mouth falling open comically. Rosie leaned forward so far that the tip of her nose was nearly touching the hologram of Rahne, as she peered at the image and tried to determine if there were fangs or not. "That's so kewl!" Rosie breathed, finally settling back. She'd seen a movie about a really friendly werewolf before, so fear wasn't a problem as the little girl shifted impatiently in her seat. "I'm a big girl, I won't get 'fraid, promise!" Rosie made the customary cross over her heart and watched Rahne's image closely, waiting for any sign of fur. |

"Alright..." Rahne said and took a few steps back from the projector, so she stood within the image from head to toe. She tossed off her flip flops with two casual kicks and adjusted her pants ever so slightly so that they wouldn't be destroyed when the tail grew in. It started with a slight shudder that ran down her spine, a slight gasp, and coarse brown fur began cascading across what was visible of her skin, shooting from her knees to her feet, which repositioned ever so slightly so as to be slightly-pawlike in appearance, down her arms and to the backs of her hands, as her fingernails darkened and thickened, sharpening to claws, up her neck and around the sides of her face as her ears grew larger, pointing at the tips her canine teeth lengthened, her eyes became a piercing yellow, and a thick bushy tail burst from the base of her spine and began wagging back and forth as a look of pure relief spread across her face. "Been holdin' that one in f'r a while now," she spoke, and her voice sounded slightly deeper, part of the way between human speech and canine growling. "So... what d' ye think? Nae too frightening, is it?" |

Leaning forward until her nose was almost touching the hologram, Rosie watched as Rahne moved back and kicked her shoes off. To Rosie's great suprise, the older girl was already changing, fur rippling across what skin was visible to the little girl. In a matter of moments, Rosie was staring at a wolf. "Wow!" She whispered in awe. Her voice rose to an impressed squeal. "You're a puppy!" Obviously Rahne wasn't, but to Rosie's young mind it was the closest thing she could come up with. In any case, Rosie was staring open-mouthed at the hologram, taking in every little detail that she could make out -- fur, ears, and tail. Wishing that she had that cool of a power, Rosie beamed at Rahne. "You're cool." The little girl declared, as though her words officially sealed the cool factor. It was official. Rosie couldn't wait until Rahne came to the school. "I move things." Rosie declared, fingering her power inhibitor bracelet. "With my head. But I'm not 'posed to, not inside." Because bad things happened when she was in the middle of the kitchen with lots of delicate and sharp objects, and she tried to move stuff. Rosie may have been practicing, true, but she was still just a little girl and her powers had the tendency to go haywire at a moment's notice. But Rahne probably already knew that. Rosie stared unabashedly for a long few moments before actually remembering to close her mouth. Imagine it, a real live werewolf in the mansion! |

Punches from the Punch Dimension
|
Yesterday, one of their own had been viciously attacked and sent to the hospital. Ari was with them now, resting in the infirmary, but Scott was not satisfied with that. She was safe yes, but what about the next time? It was important that there was no next time. It was important that the Dream be achieved... no matter how it happened, the important thing was that it did happen, and so Scott and Jean, during their lunch together, had sat in seeming silence, running plans and plots and survival strategies through their telepathic link, in complete and utter agreement, as they had been these days. There were no debates, no decisions to be made. If there was a question or a hurdle, they smoothly adapted their way of thinking like a well oiled machine, which was of course as it should be, in Scott's mind. The mechanics of his life should always be completely tuned up, each gear, each piston, each spark firing in complete and utter perfection. That's how it should be. Scott was in a temper, at the moment though, and had been since Warren's abandonment at their time of need. It had been a horrible blow to Scott, as he had thought his friend, his best friend, would understand that this was what they had been fighting for all this time, this was what they were trained for. Most of the night had been Jean inside Scott's mind soothing his anger and his hurt. Most of the night had been Scott inside Jean... their physicality helping him to work out more than his aggressions. Then, too, were they in synch, so perfectly in synch. Minds, hearts and bodies moving as one. The benefits of complete connection. They had been having lunch, when Jean, in her now routine scans of the school, to keep track of every thinking being in the mansion, had detected Rosie in Scott's office playing with his holographic communications device. It wasn't a danger, and it wasn't a problem, but it was his, and she should not be in his office without him. Where was her sitter? Who was supposed to be watching her while they were at work? Ari was relieved of her babysitting duties for obvious reasons. This was why Schooling was needed. Rosie was... starting to roam more than Scott appreciated. So, excusing his wife with a passionate kiss that was entirely mental, Scott went to reclaim their wayward child. Opening his door, he looked sternly at Rosie, noticing that Rahne in her wolf form was on the holographic interface. "Hello, Rahne, excuse me for a moment. Rose, are you supposed to be in Papa's office without him?" |

"I'm a tad bit too old t' be considered a pup, but aye, if'n that's how ye want t' see it, then sure, I'm a puppy," Rahne said with a swide, toothy smile. She liked this girl. Granted, she tended to like all children, but that didn't diminish the fact that knowing one of the children would make it infinitely easier to accept moving in, away from everything she was familiar with. It would make the transition so much easier. "Well, m'darlin', yuir younger than most, I'll say. Many of us dinnae get powers a'tall until we're teenagers. Me, I didnae get anythin' until I was eleven years old. And I was a bit early as well. Perhaps we'll see about gettin' some practice sessions in sometime." Rahne clammed up once Scott entered her line of sight, and gave him a polite nod. Just because she knew him informally did not mean she wouldn't show him the respect he had earned. Especially in front of his daughter. "My apologies, Mister Summers. We were havin' such a lovely chat, the two of us, that I didnae think about whether or not she had permission to. But if'n it's nae a problem, I do have somethin' important to talk to ye about." |

Rosie had just opened her mouth, wanting to ask what having a tail felt like when the door open and her father came in. Any expression of glee that she would have made upon him coming in was swiftly decimated as he looked down at her. It was impossible to see his eyes from behind the visor, but Rosie could make out disappointment and something like annoyance in the lines of his face and his posture. Had she been a canine herself, Rosie's tail would be firmly between her legs at that point. As it was, the little girl wilted at his tone, wishing that Rahne couldn't hear her father as he scolded her. "I...I'm sorry. I was lookin' for ya, an' it just kinda....came on..." Her words died on her lips, and with a last glance at the holographic communicator and Rahne, Rosie slid out of her chair and trudged over to her father. A tiny rebellious part of her whispered that he was stricter than ever, and where had her (more) fun Papa gone, but she immediately felt so guilty at the thoughts that they went swiftly from her mind. "And...and she's not a stranger..." Rosie added, hoping that this at least would soothe him. After all, he was always warning her about strangers. Staring down at her feet, the little girl felt hot tears build in her eyes, and she wished that the floor would just open up. Having her father disappointed in her was like having the entire world against her. "And Rahne's nice..." |

Punches from the Punch Dimension
|
Scott scooped up Rosie, bracing himself against the desk so he can handle her weight on his awkward balance because of his knee. He set her on the desk, so that they were eye to lens, she was such a very little girl and he was a tall man. He tucked a curled hand under her chin and brought it up so she looked at him, "Rosie, have I ever refused you anything you want? Have I ever yelled at you or spanked you? Have I ever given you the slightest hint that you are not my absolute pride and joy? There are many things in my office that could hurt a little girl who wasn't completely one hundred percent careful, and I have lost a lot of people who I love in my life. I spend too much time thinking something might happen to those I have left. Last month when you weren't with us, all my happiness was gone, Rosebud, and I promised myself that when you came back to us, that I was going to do everything I could to make you safe. So to find you in here, playing with my tools, I think to myself that I'm not a very good papa, and it scares me. If I ever lost you, I would never be happy again. Do you understand? Remember when we had the talk about how Papa likes to keep things that are his safe? Remember what I said? You are mine too, and I want you to be safe forever and ever, so sometimes, because I get scared, I snap and sound mean. But am I angry? Am I going to not like you? Never ever, baby girl, you belong to me forever and ever and ever, and I will always like you, always love you, even when you are a teenager and hate me." He ran his knuckle down her cheek, to catch a tear and said, "No tears, little one, you'll make me look like the meanest papa in the world in front of Rahne, and I think she might bite me if you cry." Rahne, if she heard, would know that it was not like Cyclops to be so sentimental out loud, to say such things in so tender a way. It was blunt, and it was forthright, but it was strangely soft. Something new for Scott Grey-Summers, but something only Rosie brought out of him. Without looking away from the little girl, Scott said, "Miss Sinclair, so you've met our daughter. Have there been formal introductions?" He smiled, and tweaked Rosie's nose, "Or did you get an 'I's Rosie' and leave it at that?" |
