Time of Day: 1400 When: Three days before the Sentinel Attacks, which would make it I believe April 9 A man in a beat-up white Ford pick-up truck pulled up to the closed gates of the Xavier Mansion, taking off his driving sunglasses as he put the truck in park. He looked around at the grounds that had once been like a home to him, at the Mansion that he once had lived in, trained in, studied in. Something was off. He couldn't put his finger on it, but something just felt...wrong. He rolled down the window and looked at the keypad that controlled the locking mechanism for the gates. More than likely, the combination had changed since he had been a student here. Probably several times. He buzzed the intercom, hearing the familiar sound ringing clearly in his ear, and then he got it. That buzzer shouldn't have rung clearly in his ear. It should have been muffled slightly by the sounds of, well, of a school. The place was quiet. It was downright creepy. He could understand, though, somewhat. The anti-mutant hysteria sweeping the nation was getting worse, and this place was publicly known as a haven for mutant-kind. It would make anyone a little wary. Especially a mutant. Especially a kid. ((open tag, I suppose)) |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

There was a car in the driveway, which annoyed Scott, but considering the mood he was in at the moment, that was not that hard to do. Warren had abandoned them in their time of need, had shown his true colors, and though Scott was in his Mazda and Jean was in Avery's Monte Carlo with Kate, and the transport amublance with Ari and Avery in it was between them, Scott had no difficulty whatsoever maintaining a steady grumbling dialog with Jean via their rapport, the entire ride home. Jean probably was growing as irritated with Scott as he was with Warren, but she knew her husband well enough to know that he would never show this outwardly and therefore would let him vent his frustrations and disappointment in their old friend mentally. He would be eternally grateful for her for giving him these sort of opportunities and never letting on if it was just too damn much for her. Scott hit the remote gate opener in his car and leaned his head out to call to the car at the gate, "Pull in and over to the side. Follow the Monte Carlo in and park in the guest parking at the front of the school and someone will be right with you," he ordered, and he squeezed his Mazda around the visitor and headed down the driveway, not worried about who the guest was. If he was someone in the mind for trouble, it would be easily detected and it would be easily dealt with. Scott had called ahead to have McCoy ready to deal with the transfer of Ari from hospital care to their own but with the way people were failing to do what was ordered lately he was fully prepared to have to deal with this himself. |

As Jacob waited, three cars pulled up behind him. One of them was an ambulance. Jacob felt his heart drop in his chest and the blood leave his face when he saw it, and when the gate opened and a voice he recognized as Mr. Summers told him to pull forward, he did so without a single word of protest or token feeling of frustration at being told what to do by the tight-assed bastard. Thoughts rumbled through his head as he followed the trio of cars on through the drive. What was the ambulance for? Was someone hurt? Dead? A breath clutched in his chest at that particular thought. Not here, too. Please, God, not here, too. He didn't think that his brain could handle it. He did as he had been told, pulling into the guest parking lot and killing his truck. He clutched the steering wheel for a little bit, forcing the nausea that had crept up in his stomach down. He got out of the truck and leaned against it, feeling through his pockets for his cigarettes and his lighter. His right hand shook a little as he held the flame up to the cigarette, but he managed to get it lit anyway, and took a drag, feeling immensely better afterwards. Jacob wasn't addicted to nicotine. His body physically couldn't get addicted to the substance, but the motions were soothing, repetitive, and the taste of the smoke in his mouth, the smell of it in the air relaxed him more than an artificial high could have. It was a distraction, and a habit. One he was glad he would never feel the consequences of, because of his mutation. Because recently, he had really needed the distraction. |

JP between Kate and Hank...as always, to save time. Kate was mostly silent the entire way home, the rain slicker in her lap as she twisted her fingers in it. She'd acted irrationally and snuck out -- again -- and disappointed her friends and teachers -- again. It seemed like she could never do the right thing. That was it. Kate decided that she would never leave her room again. She barely looked up as they neared the school gates, knowing that she would really get it once they were all inside, but at the abnormally long pause before turning in she had to look up. There was a car there blocking the way, and the girl briefly felt a surge of anxiety. Who was that? Evidently Scott up ahead had it handled, and at the soothing of emotions Kate relaxed back into her seat, glancing to Jean in question as the woman maneuvered the car into the drive smoothly. With a small sigh, Kate turned her eyes back to the front, watching the ambulance ahead. Ari would be okay. The moment that the car stopped, Kate was out, stretching her legs and looking towards the new car in curiosity. She wasn't worried per say, just because Jean and Scott weren't worried, but the appearance of a new car in these uncertain times was more than enough to spark her curiosity. Whoever the new guy was, however, he was worried at the sight of the ambulance. While Kate's empathy did not give her insight into specific feelings, it did give her overall emotions, and she turned to look at him. "It's okay." She called, hoping that he would believe her. "It's just...someone got hurt before...but we brought her home." Beyond this reassurance, though, she didn't take any steps toward him. Not after previous experiences had landed her in the clutches of bad guys. So now she stayed put beside Avery's car, watching in worry as the ambulance doors popped open. Hank was waiting there at the front of the mansion as they pulled up, and while his eyes turned automatically to the new car, the massive blue man moved first to the ambulance. Well, he would have been blue, but he'd thought ahead and decided on an image inducer to mask his appearance. Must scare the ambulance workers, right? "Hello, Miss Boyd." Hank smiled as he leaned into the opened doors of the ambulance. His tone was soft, not pitying but definitely concerned as he comandeered a copy of Ari's medical report. He'd been given a brief report of Ari's state earlier, but this could not compare to the official one that had every miniscule detail. ""We'll get you inside as soon as possible, I swear it by my lonesome heart." Hank winked and turned a page, skimming the report. |

All along the way home she tried to keep conversation light, nothing of the current situation, of the way things were at the moment. Just normal things the two best friends would speak of, things of normalcy and nonsense. Anything to get their minds off the fact that they were in an ambulance heading back to the institute. Never before had she ever felt the trip take so long. The last to arrive and park, Avery listened as she heard Kate being the first to speak. Her words caused Avery to case a frowned expression towards Ari. Had she been speaking to someone from the institute, she would have used Ari’s name. It couldn’t be anyone but a visitor, Avery decided, for she did not catch Scott’s shout to the unknown man at the gates. Though this look soon shifted to a smile as the ambulance doors opened to reveal Hank. He was in his induced stage, which was something she wasn’t used to seeing, as well known mutant as he was. Even if his natural state was revealed, after this day’s events, Jean would probably make the paramedics forget before they left the grounds. "We'll get you inside as soon as possible; I swear it by my lonesome heart." He had greeted Ari with a smile and a wink before he skimmed over her paperwork. Avery greeted her mentor with a nod and a smile as she clasped his shoulder with near affection as he helped her out of the back of the ambulance. She held nothing but admiration and respect in her eyes for the doctor who had rescued her in the very beginning and introduced her to Xavier’s. She didn’t even want to think of where she would be if it wasn’t for him. Exiting the ambulance Avery dark eyes finally fell upon the visitor, the scent of smoke bringing her eyes to him. Trying to place his face she found she could not, he was a stranger to her. But damn, a cigarette would be good right now. She regarded the old Ford truck that now sat parked next to hers. It had seen better days and a slight urge to be able to work on it washed over the elven. Lightly her fingers played with the chain of her image inducer which would hide her strangeness until either the ambulance left or she was told to do so. Not often did she have it activated upon school grounds. “I’ll park my car once we get Ari settled into medbay,” she informed Jean as she moved to her to retrieve her keys. Granted with the new visitor, if either of the two were to be dealt with it would be done later. |

Jean tapped her fingers on the steering wheel of Avery’s Monte Carlo and wished she could turn on the stereo but in truth, it would’ve been just one more distraction. In her mind, Scott fumed and grumbled: How could Warren? –this- and What is it going to take to get people to take this seriously? –that-…. And through it all Jean nodded, reassured, and smoothed Scott’s ruffled feathers. In Monte Carlo, there was an… atmosphere, not hard or chilly but definitely, a sense that one shape-shifting young lady had tap-danced her way onto the middle of a frozen lake and only after she was already out there did she start hearing the telltale snapping and creaking of ice. The drive from the hospital to the school lasted two hours and Jean used every minute to her advantage. “Kate,” Jean half-turned to the girl and raised an eyebrow, “you showed ingenuity and spirit getting to the hospital.” In her mind, Scott snorted and bristled at the flagrant violation of the rules. “That’s the kind of initiative that’ll make you a good X-Man one day. However,” Jean frowned, “forcing Avery to take responsibility for you by hiding in her car,” she shook her head with disapproval. “You shouldn’t have put her in that position.” Scott chimed in with punishment options ranging from extra time in the gym until she passed out with exhaustion to cleaning the school bathrooms, taking after Riva in that chore. However, she knew those punishments would be only be inconveniences and a hard day’s work at most for Kate. Then Jean’s eyes glittered as she thought of the perfect punishment. “Since you have a desire and energy to go out and about gallivanting, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind helping the school. It’s getting to be Spring, a busy time for Alejandro… planting new trees and preparing the flowerbeds. Report to Mr. Villalobo after you get changed.” Soon they were home and Jean was pulling the drive. After giving Avery her keys and seeing that she wasn’t needed, departed for her office. Punches from the Punch Dimension

Pulling into his spot, Scott stepped out of the car, using his cane almost like a weapon against the ground, against the earth itself. He turned to see the ambulance pull in and Hank and Avery begin to transfer Ari to their gurney, with the help of the ambulance technicians. Both of them wore their image inducers and Scott had to wonder what the emts would do if they realized that the large but clean shaven doctor was really covered with blue fur, and that the pretty young nurse they had been eying was green and elven, with a body chemistry more closely resembling a dandelion than a human. Panic? Hate? Fight? Who knew, who could tell? He'd been a human once, every last one of them in this institute had been human at some point with very few exceptions. His way of thinking had been so altered by his evolution, that he had somehow lost his ability to understand humanity. Had it really gone that far? Would fifteen year old Scott Summers, one day before his eyes opened into some other dimension, filled with energy, and sent beams streaking through the sky, have reacted in horror at seeing a boy with wings or a girl who could move things with her mind? Had his evolution separated him from the world of his parents that much? Was it impossible to ever come back, to ever see their point of view, to ever reconcile what they had been with what they had become? His thoughts were troubled, filled with the angers and miseries of the day, and he almost forgot about their guest. Turning to look he realized all of a sudden that it was Jacob Merando, one of their former students. He frowned. How long had he been gone? Had it been five years? Six? What had he returned for now? When situations were the way they were? One old team mate abandoned them today, had another one returned in their hour of need? Scott, momentarily distracted by Jean's telepathically informing him of her intention to return to her office, limped his way over to Jacob, extending a hand in greeting. "Mr. Merando, forgive my briskness at the gate. Things are... tense at the moment, as you can imagine. I'm afraid we've had a bit of an incident, but as Miss Morrison said, we've brought our injured home to be cared for properly." He went up the stairs to the in house intercom that was by the front door, and called, "Mina, please come to the front stoop, we have a guest. Thank you." Coming back down he said to Jacob, "Mina will be down directly to see to you. I'm sorry about leaving you in the lurch like this, but as you can see, things are hectic. Hopefully we'll get a chance to catch up before you head out... or are you planning on staying a while? We could really use you if you are... Oh, for God's sake..." He looked up to see the EMTs looking a little too curiously at the school, "Excuse me, please, I apologize for this. Excuse me, gentlemen," Scott strode over to the humans, "Thank you very much, now are there any forms to sign or are we finished here?" The emts were quickly ushered out, and Scott hurried to Ari's side and said, as the ambulance roared away, "Miss Boyd, just relax, we'll get you a few pints of Warren's blood into your system and things will be all better. He has to be worth something, right?" And with that he looked up at Hank, "Shall we get her down to the infirmary?" |

From [When Morning Comes] The ride home from the hospital had felt extremely long, and when she wasn't drifting in and out of it, Avery made light conversation with her. They didn't talk about the heavier things that Ari was positive was on both their minds. They didn't speak of her injuries or about the men that had beaten her, they didn't mention Warren's sudden leave of absence and his not saying goodbye, or the face that Scott and Jean had been extremely eager to get her out of the hospital and out from under the humans' care. Ari had the inkling that once she was slightly better though, they would have that conversation. For now, she was content to hear Avery's soothing accented voice, thankful to her in a way that Avery might have been familiar with from when their situations were reversed. The ambulance slowed to a stop, and Ari swallowed hard. It had been difficult enough calling the mansion to tell them what had happened to her, but facing everyone would be even worse. At the hospital it had been some of her closest friends; people she considered family. What about the others at the school though? Would they think she'd been weak and stupid? Ari couldn't help the feelings of shame that were rising within her. The doors opened and Hank's familiar voice broke her thoughts. It was always odd to see him in his induced form, and she still wasn't used to it, instantly missing his natural form. She mustered up a small smile for him, one of the kindest and most intelligent people she knew. "Thanks, Hank," she said softly, a low chuckle sounding in her throat at his words. Many times it still surprised her that Hank was still single, and she sometimes wondered if it was purely by choice. She waited patiently as those around her moved to help her onto a gurney. Inwardly though, she felt nearly useless, wishing idly that she felt well enough to walk into the mansion with no assistance at all. It was not a good feeling to be so dependent on everyone, even if they were being nice about it. Within moments, Scott was at her side and her dark eyes turned towards him, giving a small nod and a brief smile at his words, "Okay...thanks, Scott." Very few words, but Ari's dark eyes expressed the things she couldn't bring herself to say. That she was sorry, and that she was glad they had brought her home. She caught the reference about Warren, but she was unable to discern how Scott really meant it. Some of his blood would definitely be good though. Ari was reasonably tough, but she didn't enjoy pain or having to be hopped up on medication. The faster she healed, the better. Her gaze briefly moved towards the dark, unfamiliar man nearby, finding that she didn't recognize him at all. He looked a bit too old to be a new student, but maybe he was at the school for other purposes. The brunette felt embarrassed that someone she didn't know would be seeing her in her bruised state, and she felt her skin flush in shame, but there wasn't much she could do about it now. A flare of bitterness towards the men that had done this to her sprang up in her chest, but she fought it back, not wanting her feelings of injustice to take over. It was difficult though, especially when she thought of the reasons she'd been attacked. She was a mutant, who had saved Rosie months ago and supported Jean and Scott's adoption of her. It hardly seemed fair at all. |

Scott’s message blared out over the intercom in Mina’s office just as she was stepping out the door to welcome Ari back home and check in on things, and she heaved a little sigh. If it wasn’t one thing it was another, but at least no one was attacking them at the moment. That was always an improvement, but she knew better to hold her breath. There was a tense quality to the air as she came out the front door and breezed down the steps to the driveway, buttoning the jacket to her suit as she did so. The ambulance was just pulling off and she paused at Ari’s stretcher, giving her a warm smile. “Welcome home, Ari,” she said, immensely grateful that the younger woman was finally back at the mansion. “You hurry up and get better, ok? Scott and Jean need their babysitter back,” she joked with a teasing smile before moving away so Hank and Avery could do their work. Moving towards Scott, she arched a brow as she spotted Desperado, whom she assumed was the guest he had been referring to. “Is that Jacob? Jacob Merando? Christ, it’s been what, four or five years, hasn’t it? I wonder what he’s been up to…” Looking to Scott she quirked a corner of her mouth up in a half-smile. “Well, I guess I’ll find out. Make sure Ari gets settled in alright, would you? I’ll catch up with you and Jean later to get the details.” She left Scott and crossed the gravel driveway to where Jacob was leaning against his truck. When he had been a student here they hadn’t been particularly close, not like she was with the original X-men, but she would’ve called him a friend. “Well look who it is, come to visit us again at long last,” she greeted with a smile. “Welcome back, Jacob, it’s been a long time, how’ve you been? What brings you back to Westchester?” With a quick nod of her head she motioned him towards the school. “Come on in, let’s talk inside. There’s a lot to catch up on.” |

Jacob pulled another drag out of his cigarette as they loaded a girl onto a gurney. He didn't recognize the attending physician, but then the only person so far that he did recognize was Mr. Summers. The girl looked...she looked bad. A twinge of sympathy pain flared through him, but he turned his eyes away. He knew that if he were in that condition, he wouldn't want strangers to look at him. Some girl called out to him, semi-explaining what was going on, but questions were still ringing through his head. He relaxed a little knowing that no one had died, but now he had to wonder who had done such a thing? And to a girl? He knew it was chauvinistic, he knew it was pig-heaaded, but he couldn't help himself. Women should be treated better. They shouldn't be beaten like that. Quiet anger mixed with fear, displacing it somewhat. Scott walked up to him, using a cane. That was...new. More questions came to his mind, but he didn't get a chance to ask them, nor would he have. He took his cigarette in his left hand and shook Mr. Summers', nodding politely in greeting. He didn't say anything. Too much was happening, too fast. His mind couldn't wrap around it. He remembered this school having its hard times, yes, but never like this. Maybe they just never let the students see this kind of thing. Maybe they had thrown a nice wool covering over his eyes when he was studying here so that he would think that everything was okay and happy. Someone named Mina was supposed to come down to see him. He remembered a Mina from back then. Cute, blonde, not a red-head. That was a big selling point in his head, now. They hadn't been close, but Jacob hadn't really been close to anyone at the school, with a few exceptions. He didn't expect to see any of them here, though. He put his cigarette out against his boot and opened the door, dumping the butt into an ashtray that he had placed in one of the cupholders. Just as he was closing the door, someone else called at him, or at least he assumed that they were. He turned to see the girl he had been remembering, only a little older now, walking up to him. “Welcome back, Jacob, it’s been a long time, how’ve you been? What brings you back to Westchester?” Just as he was formulating an answer in his head, she suggested that they head inside. Everyone was doing that, today, asking him questions and not giving him time to answer. It wasn't so much annoying as it was worrying. Everyone was tense, he could practically touch it in the air, cut it with a knife. His own shoulders were beginning to hurt from it. "There’s a lot to catch up on.” "Yeah, I guess there is," he replied, his voice a little quiet. Then he followed her up the steps and into the Mansion. |

There was no denying that the atmosphere at the Institute was tense and with everything that had been going on lately, from the Sentinels arriving in the city to Ari’s assault, there was no denying that they had good reason to be wary. They were teetering on the edge of something dark and deadly, a war that would cost both sides more than they could even really imagine. The school, its students, and all mutants worldwide were perched on a ticking time bomb and the clock was winding down while they were still trying to figure out how to diffuse it. She shoved those thoughts aside and led Jake up the expansive front steps to the large wooden doors that led into the mansion. Inside the air was cooler, a quiet hush hovering in the air that somehow seemed out of place in the once welcoming halls. Mina could barely remember now through everything else that was going on, but just a year ago children and young adults had bustled through the halls, talking loudly amongst each other, unsure of themselves but sure of their safety here. That had changed in the past few weeks, however, and though their daily lives went on people spoke more quietly amongst one another, as if they weren’t sure who was listening. Just off to the side from the main foyer there was a quiet sitting room and Mina showed Jacob to it, shutting the door quietly behind him once he entered and motioning for him to take a seat. “Well, it certainly has been a long time, hasn’t it?” she quipped with a bit of a smile, sitting in a chair across from him. “How’ve you been? What have you been up to since you graduated?” As far as she was aware, Jacob hadn’t been in contact with any of the residents at the school and that brought to mind the question…why was he back? |

The place was dead silent. It was actually kind of unnerving. Nonetheless, Jacob said nothing as he followed Mina into the sitting room. He noted that she walked with more authority than she did back then. Had she become faculty here? And why did Scott need a cane? Why were students getting assaulted. Well, other than for the obvious reasons. Even he couldn't ignore the increasing anti-mutant hysteria, though he had done was millions of other Americans had done: quietly put it out of his mind. It wasn't like he had ever really seen a violent protest before, so he could ignore the fact that they happened. Today was a real slap to his worldview. And he had a sinking feeling that it wasn't over yet. He would be lying to himself if he said that it didn't scare him a little. He gladly told himself that lie anyway. "Fine," he replied, his voice still quieter than usual. Hopefully, she wouldn't realize it. "Went to work after I graduated. Didn't have enough for college." A clock ticked somewhere in the room for a few silent seconds. "What happened?" |

Mina nodded in response to Jacob’s words. “So you’ve been doing well, then?” she asked, wanting to clarify that fact. He still hadn’t told her why he was back and while outwardly it didn’t seem that anything had happened, Mina knew firsthand how easy it was to hide that some really was wrong. He might not have been a student here any longer but he was still one of their own and with what was going on in the world they had to look out for each other. "What happened?" Quietly, Mina let out a small sigh. “One of our residents was attacked in the city,” she explained. “You’ve seen the news lately, no doubt, humans are going crazy with this anti-mutant hysteria. From what Ari’s told us it was a few FOH goons that caught her when she was leaving her art studio. Thankfully she’s expected to make a full recovery.” Clasping her hands in front of her Mina leaned forward in her chair slightly, resting her elbows on her knees as she studied the ground for a few moments in thought. “Jacob, have you been in contact with anyone here at the school in the past few years?” she asked, trying to gauge how much he knew. Did he know about the Professor’s dea—disappearance, or the other changes that had occurred at the school? |

Jacob shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He didn't want to tell her the truth, that he was here because he had nowhere else to be that didn't have memories of the dead associated with it. That he no longer had any family and with this mutant-hating craze sweeping the nation no friends, either. Not that his fellow construction hands didn't like or respect him, they just didn't want to be caught associating with him. He couldn't really blame them, honestly. Okay, before he could blame them, but not anymore. He didn't want them ostracized from friends and family just because of him. After all, no one should be alone. He listened quietly to Mina's explanation of the ambulance, the girl. Sympathy pains flared up in him again just at thinking about it. He leaned to the side in his chair, resting his head in one of his hands. The Friends of Humanity had done that? He had heard about them on the news, read about them in the papers. Nothing indicated that they were hostile. But of course it wouldn't. The news media is run by humans. His face became creased with a little sadness. He had worked alongside humans for six years, living Xavier's dream on a small scale, co-existing with the construction hands that he worked with and earning their respect bit by bit until the fact that he was a mutant was an insignificant one. In his little world, it looked as though the Dream was working. To think that it was failing so badly in the rest of the world. “Jacob, have you been in contact with anyone here at the school in the past few years?” Now his face creased with confusion. "No, why?" |

Jacob’s response was the one Mina had been dreading. She always hated to be the bearer of bad news but like it or not, it was her responsibility to inform Jake of the changes that had gone on. She only hoped that he would take it as well as could be expected, and that some other tragedy wasn’t the reason for his return. “Jake, since you’ve been gone, there have been a lot of changes here at the school,” she began gently. “About two years ago Professor Xavier went missing. There weren’t any clues, any hint as to what might have happened to him or where he might have been. He was just…gone.” Her words held an undercurrent of sadness and it was very much evident that Xavier’s disappearance and presumed death had taken its toll on everyone at the school. She was silent for a few moments in order to let the news sink in. “We haven’t heard anything from him or about him since,” she added softly. “I took over as Headmistress a few months after. Scott is still leader of the X-men squad, and you know most of the faculty, I think. Jean, Warren, Hank…” When she said it like that it made her realize how relatively smoothly everything had fallen into place after the Professor’s disappearance despite the overwhelming grief they had been feeling. Even with all their uncertainty they had stepped up as a team and done what needed to be done. In a way, it was a testament to all the Professor had taught them. “Things can get rough from time to time without him, but we’re doing our best to make him proud,” she said with a sad sort of half-smile. “I don’t know what your plans are, whether you’re just visiting or you’re planning on staying a while, but we could definitely use you back on the team.” She smirked slightly, letting out a somewhat disdainful chuckle. “You’ve probably seen the news reports about the Sentinels and everything else that’s going on. Our main focus here is to keep our students safe, and we can use any help we can get." |
