When:Around 5 am Place in the Plot:erm...before all hell breaks lose? ------ Two weeks, three days, eight hours and 28 seconds, 29, 30.Chris gave a loud sigh and rolled over onto her back. The top bunk squeaked pitifully underneath her shifting weight. This was torture. Flopping her arm over her face Chris tried to deny the urge to watch the glowing clock next to her face. She'd been counting it since lights-out that was about five hours ago. Insomnia was something she'd been fighting since her arrival at the institute. A mixture of her own nerves as well as the ambient energy given off by her peers, and she was surprised to find, the faculty. Never in her life had Chris been around so many mutants. For whatever reason their life essence or as she called it, auras were much stronger then those of non mutants, so strong in fact that she couldn't sleep with them around. They seemed to poke her trying to get her attention, like little children who weren't being looked after. Normally the energy kept close to it's owner but while the mutant was sleeping the glowing energy ran a muck. On her first night at the institute the roaming energy had given the usually rather composed Chris quite a fright. But since then they had just been getting on her nerves. Finally making up her mind Chris quietly made her way down the bunk, careful not to wake the sleeping girl Chris closed the door behind her. The hall was dark and silent. Fighting the urge to just curl up on the floor outside her door Chris shuffled down to the large lounge. Dark, silent and completely devoid of annoying auras...perfection she thought as she flopped her self down on one of the over stuffed sofas. It only took a few moments for her eyes to shut, lids heavy with sleep. And just when she was about to drift off a bright light filled her vision. “Not again.”she mumbled. “Go away! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?” she nearly shouted angrily as she sat up and peered over the sofa's back. She'd expected to see some bright blob of energy, and aura that had perhaps gotten too far from it's owner, perhapses one of the students able to astral project. Needless to say what was looking back at her was something very different. |

It seemed as though sleeplessness had reared its ugly head that night and, Kate decided, toessing and turning all night wasn't going to fix anything. She sat up in bed, careful not to disturb her roommates as she shucked off her covers and stood. Kate had her own special reason for not being able to sleep, and that was her empathic surroundings. It didn't matter that most everyone in the mansion was asleep; they still were frightened and anxious of what was going on, and Kate was feeling every bit of that anxiety. With a guilty glance at the clock -- the girl wasn't entirely sure if she would be allowed to wander at five in the morning -- Kate pulled a nightrobe over her nightgown and slipped out the door, pausing in the hallway. No one would mind if she went to the lounge to watch the news, right? Silent as a cat, Kate moved down the hallway unitl she was standing in the doorway of the dark room. She waws about to go curl up in one of the easy chairs when a voice snapped at her from a nearby couch. “Go away! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?” Kate recoiled, flushing purprle. "I...sorry." She whispered. "I didn't think anyone was here..." |

The look on Chris' face was one of pure horror with a sickening tinge of embarrassment. The poor girl looking back at her seemed as if she might start to cry. “Ohmigod, I'm so sorry, I didn't...I mean I didn't know...I thought you were something else, I'm so sorry!” Chris in her embarrassment gushed her apologies in one breath. Covering her face she tried to hide the reddening in her cheeks. This was all so much unlike her, she almost never yelled at people, she was always so calm and self composed. It had to be the lack of sleep that was getting to her. Peeking through her fingers she glanced pitifully at the unrecognized girl. She really hoped she hadn't scared her too bad. “I really am so sorry I've not gotten any sleep since getting here. I've never been around so many mutants. My mutation makes it difficult...it's going to take a little getting used to.” Chris knew she was probably rambling on but she could hardly help her self, it was a nervous habit that had taken years of meditation to overcome, and with her severe lack of sleep she easily reverted to her old ways. “You can sit down if you like..I promise I won't bite.” she said with a shy smile. |

Kate couldn't help but blush a little more at the other girl's apologies. She waved her hand, shaking them off, because there was no real need for apologies. "It's okay." She said, doing her very best to smile. "Really, I'd've done the same thing. No sleep, and all." She gave a little shrug of the shoulders, as if to say 'what can you do?'. She gave a sudden giggle, blushing herself. "Hey, at least you didn't throw anything at me." Kate grinned, trying to make the situation easier. She could see -- and feel -- that the older girl was mortified, and that made her feel guilty for her own reaction. Kate settled onto the couch, cross-legged, stifling a sigh of sadness at the fact that her skin was swirling a pale blue now. "I, er...know how that is." She said in response to the comment about powers. "I can't even close my eyes without feeling someone's emotions, and everyone's been having nightmares lately." She gave a little shudder. "Doesn't really help sleep. Um...what are your powers?" Kate couldn't help but be curious; only months before, she'd never known a mutant, and now she was surrounded. She had the vague realization that the question was nosy, and added, "But you don't have to tell me, really." Realizing that her manners had gone completely out the window, Kate extended her hand and gave a lopsided grin. "Sorry...I'm Kate Morrison." She blushed harder, thinking what a doofus she must look like by now. "My mama taught me better manners, I swear." |

Chris smiled at the girl's response, glad that she hadn't taken her shouts too seriously. Chris instantly had a feeling that the girl understood her own feelings, her pink tinged aura was pulling it's self closer to her body, a sign that she shared Chris's embarrassment. Allowing herself to release a nervous chuckle Chris took a closer look that the girl. She was young, very young 13 or 14 maybe. "Hey, at least you didn't throw anything at me." the girl said causing Chris to blush again. “Oh gosh I wouldn't have done that! I really am sorry about all that.” Chris explained as the took a seat on the sofa. She could already see the girl relaxing her aura was loosening up a bit, turning a light blue...no wait that was the girl...Chris' mouth fell open a little as she watched the girl's skin tinge the same shade of blue as her aura. Trying not to be rude Chris just smiled as the girl explained that she was an empath. Well that explained things a little. “ Um...what are your powers? But you don't have to tell me, really." Chris' smile broadened. There was a question she'd been more then used to answering. It was practically the first thing the other students asked after saying hello. She thought it was kind of funny, people's aura's always got so excited when asking it. “Oh it's ok, I can see and take in the natural energy surround living things, their aura I guess. Nothing too special really.” she explained. It wasn't a huge thin to her, she'd been able to see auras since she could remember it wasn't something she had to get used to when she hit puberty like most mutants had to. Kate's aura turned a a bright pink as she extended her hand in introduction. “It's nice to meet you Kate, I'm Charisma McFadden, but call me Chris. ” |

(OOC: Hope its cool if I join ya!) 5 in the morning….what the hell was she doing up? Oh yeah…that dream. Nightmares were nothing more than stories stirred up to scare little children. At least, that was how Megan used to view them. They could be filled in the same category as ‘things that go bump in the night,’ ‘monsters in the closet,’ and even ‘candy is bad for you’. In Megan’s juvenile mind none of the above had ever existed. Her mind had simply been too pure for any dark thoughts to crawl in and make themselves at home. Her idea of a bad day was being sent to bed without any ice cream. A child had to experience hard times or have a dark imagination to have nightmares. Where else would those ‘creepy men’ or ‘dark alleys’ come from? Megan’s thoughts were always happy. They were always positive. But that had been the younger version of her. Things had changed, in more ways then one, since her little journey at the last mutant academy. People didn’t just revert back to their normal selves after having part of their soul replaced with dark magic. Her personality had changed slightly. Her thoughts were no longer so pure. And her dreams? Well, every now and then she was forced to believe in night terrors. But Megan still tried to look on the bright side. Knowing what bitter food tasted like made sweet foods ten times better right? What was good without a little sense of evil? And, in the same mind set, didn’t experiencing a nightmare make a good dream that much more pleasant? Whatever makes you feel better Meg. This night’s excursion had taken her back to the night she lost part of herself. Except the process had been completed. She had become nothing more than a stupid sword. It sounded cheesy when she repeated the dream to herself. But the feeling… The fact that she was awake couldn’t be changed. Megan had tried curling up underneath her purple blanket. But half an hour later her black eyes were still staring at a piece of fluff connected to the oversized cotton square. Apparently her body felt like being her enemy tonight. After another agonizing five minutes Megan decided she had to move around. Lying there with nothing to do was going to drive her crazy. Without paying much attention Megan seized a dark green sweater and pulled it over her head. Messy black hair, a very light green sweater, and blue silk shorts…Man I must look like a fine piece of woman meat. But Megan didn’t particularly care. Who was she going to run into at this hour? At least her body looked good in shorts right? Trying to be as silent as possible Megan gently shut the door behind her. Bare foot she began to wander aimlessly down the hallways. As she came closer to the entrance hall she heard a muffled voice. As she crept closer she noticed something. It wasn’t one voice but two. Megan, ever the social butterfly, couldn’t resist. She slowly turned the corner. Then she saw the sources of the ‘commotion’. Sitting side by side on one of the soft couches were two girls. One was much older than the other. And one was…well…blue. Though that took Megan aback for about a split second, she quickly got over it. This girl had blue skin and she had a pair of wings attached to her back. Who had any right to judge? When a point in the conversation opened up, Megan stepped forward. “I don’t mean to interrupt, but I walk walking around and couldn’t help but hear you gals talking. Do you mind if I join you…I can’t really go back to sleep.” |

((OOC: Sorry...got caught up in something.... :( )) ((OOC #2: GAH! My computer's being stupid, so it didn't show Megan's post...edited now...sorry!!!)) The mood in the room was lightening, luckily, and Kate let out a relieved sigh. It wasn't entirely lightened, but then again what room in the mansion was, after all this horrible stuff happening to mutants? She leaned back and settled in the plush couch, listening attentively. Kate stifled a giggle at the look she received when her skin color changed. That was one of the most common reactions she got -- with the other reaction being outright hostility, but Kate preferred not to dwell on that one. She had learned over her time at the mansion that she didn't have to hide her skin anymore, which made for a more outgoing and bubbly girl. "Sorry...it does that according to my emotions." She grinned, stretching out a hand so that Chris could see it better in the dim light. It was nice to know that someone would understand, and Kate blinked when the older girl mentioned her powers. She looked at her outstretched hand, wondering what it looked like through Charisma's eyes. "We have auras?" Kate repeated, finally looking up curiously. "That's way cooler than my powers. Can you see your own aura? What do they look like?" She blushed a little again, realizing that she was being a motormouth. "Sorry." She said again, automatically. "I guess you can see emotions sort of, and I feel them." The comparison left her biting her lower lip, thinking. Her thoughts were interrupted, though not unpleasantly, by the appearance of another girl. Kate thought she recognized her as one of her roommates, but as she'd been paying little attention to her surroundings these days, there was no telling. In any case, Kate grinned at Megan over the back of the couch. "Sure, more the merrier!" |

Chris watched as Kate extended her arm, and her now bright blue aura stretched out a good three inches past her skin, it have her a smurf-ish glow that Chris secretly thought was pretty cool. “Nothing to apologies about...bet this makes lying about you homework really hard.” Chris said with a chuckle. She was already starting to feel like her old self. She was still tired but being able to talk to some one else made it a little better. Chris was a natural people person, and her dorm room was always way too quiet, it creped her out some times. "We have auras?" Kate asked obviously curious. “Yeah, it's our natural energy, life force what ever you want to call it, and we mutants have really strong auras. That's why I can't get any sleep, some times auras wander when their body is asleep, and of course they always find me, keep me up that sort of thing.” Chris rolled her eyes expressively. This was a real learning experience, she'd been playing with the idea of taking night classes so that she could sleep during the day when there'd be no pesky auras to bother her. There were probably a few kids who because of their mutations were similarly forced in to nocturnalism. Pushed out of her thoughts by a flood of questions from Kate, Chris just smiled and tried her best to ease her new friend's curiosity. “You know I'm sure I have one, but when I look at my self I just see this bright shimmer. Doesn't do much, but it does get brighter when there's a lot of people around. I mean your aura changes color, and it moves around kind of swirling about different shades of blue right now, but mine is just this glowing-” Chris didn't finish her sentence because right then she noticed a third person entering the common room. “I don’t mean to interrupt, but I walk walking around and couldn’t help but hear you gals talking. Do you mind if I join you…I can’t really go back to sleep.” Chris smiled at the girl, “Looks like that's becoming a common occurrence around here.” she said before waving the girl over to the sofa there was a space between Kate and herself. Chris motioned for the girl to take it. "Welcome to the first meeting of Insomniacs Anonymous." she joked, "I'm Chris and this is Kate." |

Megan was never one to be afraid of meeting new people. It didn’t really matter if it was over lunch or at five in the morning. People were people and the social butterfly within herself never seemed to sleep. Must be all the sugar I eat, Megan though to herself. Keeps it alive day in and day out. Though she wasn’t nervous about talking to these two girls sitting on the sofa, Megan did have a little concern. On numerous occasions Megan had strolled right into someone’s private conversation. The results had been anything from stern glares to outright yelling. It was understandable, though a little rough. Megan hoped the girls weren’t having that sort of chat. But why else would they be up at this hour? All her concerns melted away the second the older girl looked her way. She sent a warm smile across the room. Megan took this opportunity to take in the appearances of the two students. The one looking her way seemed to be about the same age. Her hair seemed to be of a dark hue, though the exact colour couldn’t be discerned in this dark environment. The girl’s face was oval but, once again, exact features couldn’t exactly be seen from this distant. However, Megan automatically got a good ‘vibe’ from the other girl. She seemed to be full of a genuine joy. That was something Megan related to very easily. Her black eyes then turned to look at the other student. As she noticed before, this girl was much younger. She appeared to be on the scrawny side of the food chain and also had dark hued hair. “Looks like that’s becoming a common occurrence around here.” A smile now formed on Megan’s thin face, causing dimples to form on either side. At least these people were friendly in the wee hours of the night…or morning. In Megan’s mind AM and PM were simply devices used to discern between which five it was. They did not indicate morning or afternoon. In Megan’s world if it was dark outside, it was night. Furthermore, if over half of the student population was still asleep: it was night. But now wasn’t exactly the opportune moment to contemplate night vs day. Still with her bright smile intact, Megan silently accepted the offer to wander over to the pair. She plopped down where the girl indicated and looked at both in turn. “Welcome to the first meeting of Insomniacs Anonymous. I’m Chris and this is Kate.” She laughed quietly at Chris’s joke. Megan could tell this night wasn’t going to turn out so bad after all. Maybe her body hadn’t been the enemy. Perhaps it had refused to go back into slumber for a reason. Then again she was probably just making up excuses to let go of any anger she still held at being awake at this hour. Students addicted to sleep didn’t usually take well to being up before noon. Megan could already tell that this day would involve at least two short naps under her purple blanket. Megan shook Chris’s hand and then Kate’s coloured one. “Hey guys. My names Megan, or just Meg if you want. I’m glad to be a part of this club, but lets not demand nightly meetings ok?” |

Kate couldn't help but giggle aloud. "I was always a really bad liar." She said, trying to squelch the grin and pretend to be at least a little serious, but it didn't work. "But this just makes it worse. And forget about talking to boys." The thought brought the faintest of blushes to her cheeks again. The information about auras was new, however, and Kate listened attentively. She wondered vaguely if her own aura wandered much, and was just mulling over this new information when Megan sat down. Kate beamed at her; while she was tired, she was also inclined to be genuinely sweet to anyone who returned the courtesy. Kate shook the offered hand as seriously as she could manage, but she was still cracking up over the joke about Insomniacs Anonymous. Late-night/early morning hours tended to make her giggly like that. "Wait...if it's anonymous, how come we just told our names?" She joked right back, skin swirling to a pale pink in happiness. This was just what she needed, in the wake of the attacks. Yawning slightly, the girl glanced to the clock on the wall. 5:30 AM. Ick. Like Megan, she was looking forward to a nap later on in the day. "Anyone want some hot chocolate?" Kate asked, struggling to sit up -- the couch was suddenly feeling very comfortable. "I know a really good recipe, and I think we'd be allowed in the kitchen..." Hopefully. Kate wasn't entirely sure about that, with all the new rules set into place. Well, they could always claim they were up early to train... |

Chris gave Meg a warm smile. It was tough not being able to sleep, she herself was so used to getting at least 9 hours, but for the last week she'd been working on three or four tops. It was hard and she was really feeling the effects. She'd fallen asleep twice in class that day, and she had a feeling it wasn't going to be the last time if she didn't find a fix and soon. "Wait...if it's anonymous, how come we just told our names?" Kate asked. Chris' face sqinched together in a moment of confusion. “Um...well....good question.” wow she really needed sleep. Kate seemed to find the irony of the moment humorous as her skin turned a cheery pink. Chris was glad to see it, she had a feeling that Kate needed a good laugh, they all needed a laugh. There seemed to be a general tension coating everyone. "Anyone want some hot chocolate?" the question was a little out of left field but at the moment it seemed like a good idea. “ Are we aloud to do that?” Chris asked really not sure how seriously late night curfew breaking was taken. {OOC: sorry both the shortness, p.s I meant for this to take place before the attacks, but no worries } |

Megan was met with so much warmth. It seemed as if she really had come stumbling down the right hallway at the right time. The only thing would have made this meeting better was one little tweak of scenery. Not so much the placement. But rather the time. It seemed her mind kept going back to the fact that she should be sleeping at this hour. Forget about Megan told herself mentally. Hadn’t she been up at this time on numerous occasions? She was known for staying up really late with friends. And here she was sitting, at this hour, with two girls she already started to consider friends. So what was her mind’s problem? Man, I really need to shake it out of its comfort zone more don’t I? Her mental battle came to an abrupt end as the other girls spoke. "Wait...if it's anonymous, how come we just told our names?" Both she and Chris started to stammer. Usually Megan would come up with some witty reply at this moment. However, her clogs weren’t exactly turning very well. She needed about two cups of sugar-loaded coffee before her mind would even consider cracking some jokes. At least her moment of loss came with more feelings of happiness. The smaller girl to her side was even changing colours. Now her skin shone a beautiful pink. You didn’t have to be physic to know that indicated feelings of joy or relaxation. For a split second Megan wondered what other colours Kate could turn to. Could her skin change to every colour in the book? Or merely a few? The answer wasn’t important and Megan quickly forgot about it. “Um...well....good question.” “I guess we will just have to settle being anonymous to everyone else.” "Anyone want some hot chocolate?" Megan snapped to attention. Hot chocolate. Man, that stuff sounded absolutely delicious at this hour. She could just imagine having a cup of it in her small hands. The steam slowly swirling from the white ceramic cup, the wonderful taste of melted chocolate and possibly white melting marshmallows, and the warmth that would fill her stomach. Maybe her thoughts were a little dramatic, but a warm drink was exactly what she needed. Kate gained about thirty points in her book just for coming up with the idea. The only thing that would make a warm cup of cocoa better was snuggling up in her warm purple blanket. But it wasn’t worth running all the way back to her room just to retrieve it. Friends would make up ten fold for the lack of her blanket. “Are we aloud to do that?” “We could at least try. If we get in trouble for it, we can just tell the truth and say we didn’t know if we were allowed to grab a drink or not. They can’t punish us for that right?” It wasn’t in Megan’s nature to break the rules. But in her mind she honestly didn’t think she was. Ok so maybe she was out past curfew. Still, the three girls weren’t doing anything dangerous or wrong. They simply couldn’t sleep so they decided to talk and drink a cozy cup of chocolate. No person in their right mind could get really mad at them for that. Megan shrugged her shoulders and stood up. Her hands pulled down the bottom of her scrunched jacket. “My vote is we give it a try.” |

In a very strange way, in a way the attacks had made tonight that much better. Kate couldn't help but feel more at home now than she'd ever felt before. While fear was still rampant throughout the mutant community, the fear had linked everyone together, and now she was surrounded by friends who weren't scared of her mutation. Forget human friends. Mutants were the best. Kate felt an instant sort of guilt at this thought, but turned her thoughts hastily back to the other two on the couch. “I guess we will just have to settle being anonymous to everyone else.” "We could always make up private nicknames and be like spies." Kate suggested, perking up. She could see them now, sneaking through the mansion in trenchcoats and sunglasses and ducking behind potted plants whenever anyone looked their way. Evidently her hot chocolate idea was accepted, because at that moment Megan looked as though she might kiss her. Kate giggled for the umpteenth time that night...morning...whatever...and wiggled so that she wasn't against the back of the couch anymore. Man, was that couch deep and comfy. "Well...it's 5:30 now...I bet some people get up now, so why not?" The girl shrugged, brushing in annoyance at a strand of red hair that had gotten in her eyes. She stood up, swaying very slightly on her feet as the lack of sleep hit her, but it wasn't enough to make her sit again. "I'm pretty sure we can use the kitchen now. Mom showed me a recipe for real hot chocolate, not the stuff from the packet." And despite her exhaustion, Kate bounced towards the door, slowing just a little so she wouldn't wake anyone in the rooms closest to the lounge. |

Chris suddenly realized how much more amusing everything was when you'd only slept a total of 8 hours in a school week. As the group agreed to keep their identities secret to the everyone out side the group the issue of chocolate was once more raised. Chris had an on again, off again love affair with chocolate, she'd never been able to refuse the substance in any form, whether it was hot chocolaty liquid, bared, or even drizzled over a truffle...it was her true weakness. The more she thought about it the less worried she was about being caught out of bed. She'd hardly noticed but it would soon begin to brighten outside it really was morning already. Besides her two accomplices were right, first it was morning, and some one was bound to be up already, if not soon. There had to be some morning people in this school other then the three sleep deprived girls huddled on the sofa. Second, if any one said anything about them being up they would just tell them the truth: they hadn't known an better. “I've never had real hot chocolate... I motion that we continue this meeting in the kitchen, anyone what to second that motion?” she asked pretending that such a motion was even necessary. |
