Time of Day: Morning, about ten o'clock
Place in the Time-Line: May 9th, the day after "First Meeting"

Kate strode down the hall leading to the staff quarters early one morning, pondering what she ought to say. She was proud of her school, proud of the role that it was taking to protect all of mutantkind, and it was in this pride that she had immediately decided that Jean and Scott needed to be aware of some of the goings-on in the school.

Not that Kate thought they didn't know, of course. It was just that...well, there was a chance they really didn't, because as far as Kate could tell it was an isolated event. Maybe...just maybe...she would finally be doing something right for once.

It wasn't like Kate hated her classmates. She didn't, not really. It was the opposite in fact, a genuine desire to protect them, that drove her to whisper the school's secrets. Kate knew that it probably would make her look horrible, if anyone ever found out, but in the meantime she just wanted to help.

As the girl reached the Grey-Summers' door, she shifted the stuffed toy in her hands -- her excuse for coming up there in the first place. Too all appearances, Kate was just returning a toy that Rosie had left downstairs, but in reality she had borrowed the toy to create the excuse in the first place.

With a deep breath, Kate knocked on the door leading to the little family's suite, very slightly worried. Yet this matter was urgent in her mind, and she was determined to protect everyone. It was time to make up for her shoddy performance in the Danger Room less than a month ago. "Excuse me." She called softly, politely, fingers digging into the plush toy's fur. "Um...can I talk?"

The mental processes by which the telepathic half of ShadowX controlled this school and its occupants were extremely taxing on her. She rested, eyes closed on the bed they shared, her red hair spread around her head like a halo. The strain had begun to show on her, white streaks appearing in the russet tones. Her husband had begun to grey at the temples, his short hair a dark enough brown to make the silver more apparent then it really was. They were not aging, not growing older, but the strain on their bodies was considerable. The more physical part of the pair, realizing the strains his partner, his lover, his better half was under, had begun to adapt to her needs. They could not be separated, it was physically painful, physically taxing. At this stage, they couldn't afford to be weak.

Scott, as he still thought of himself, though he was evolving beyond the man he once was, let Jean rest in their room, and he sat in their living area, working on the interface to the war room that he had built in here so he could work on their plans while his beloved slept. He could still feel her stroking the psyches of their students, molding their minds even as the training he gave them molded their bodies. She should be asleep, she should be resting, but it was not her way. They could rest when the world was theirs, and their people were safe.

Rosie napped with her Mama, the pair snuggled together like any mother and daughter, reminding ShadowX of why this was so necessary. The children. Children like Rosie. She had to be protected. When humanity was under control, the danger they presented would be gone, and children like Rosie would be allowed to be what they were without fear of prejudice. A utopia. Peace. The Dream achieved.

The knock on their door alerted them, and he felt Jean stir at the sound. There was no need for him to urge her lay down so that she could continue to rest. The decision was made that he would handle whoever came to speak with them, and she would continue her sleep. They no longer had the capacity to argue or debate.

They did what was best in complete agreement.

Scott opened the door, dressed, as always, in his black uniform, his eyes shining red, unfettered by his glasses, the damaged portion of his brain compensated for by the undamaged portion of hers. He looked down to find Zodiac at his door, looking worriedly up at him, a toy clutched in her hands. "Excuse me." She called softly, politely, fingers digging into the plush toy's fur. "Um...can I talk?"

::Of course...:: he said, projecting their combined voice into her head automatically. He felt Jean stir again, and so he switched to vocal speech. the echo in his tones present, but the action less taxing on his wife. "Of course, Zodiac. Please come in. What can we do for you?"

It was an odd place to be reading a book. It was much odder to be reading the book. In the hallway sat Anne Lee leaning against a teacher's door four doors down from the Grey-Summers' room. To her knowledge the hallway to the teacher's room wasn't off limits. With this being one of the more quiet places to read a book she decided to do just that. Other students mostly avoided this hallway nowadays. Those who did trek here usually came to one door then leave. Simple as that. A page was turned in the encyclopedia she was reading. It wasn't hard to guess why they came to that door.

In the past month since the supposed sentinel attack many things had become clear. Many more questions had come to the surface. Everything she thought was be turned around. At first anger had filled Anne Lee the moment it dawned on her that the whole sentinel attack had been a setup. Now it made sense. Scott and Jean were only trying to show them the importance of being prepared. Only a few of the students had been ready for such an attack. They stood up and defied the sentinels. The summoner had been among those students. Her name listed with her brother's as those who had passed the test. Prided filled her small form thinking back to that early morning. A strange thought seeped from a dark corner of her mind and came to light. It was all a lie even her pride.

Outwardly Anne Lee shrived. That early morning in the Danger Room was a lie. There was no truth in it. They were manipulated. Her life, her brother's life, the lives of the other students were in danger. At least that was what they all had thought. The trickery, why would the Grey-Summers do such a thing? It was all a lie. It all made sense. A lie... the truth... a lie...

A new person joined the summoner in the hallway. Just another student telling on another student. The only door people seemed to be going to was the rulers of the school. Closing the encyclopedia Anne Lee set it on the ground before getting up to join Kate. The thick book was left behind. If someone tripped because of it the blame would be theirs. Straighting her yellow and black uniform she reached Kate just seconds after Cyclops greeted her.

"Sir, I have nothing to do and I'm bored of reading," Anne Lee said looking at her feet as she spoke. "I was wondering if there would be anything that I can do." The small blonde then looked at Kate. "Go ahead, tell your piece," she said offering a smile. Kate ultimately believed she was doing the right thing. So be it. Support was given only because it seemed the correct course of action. Was there harm in that?

When the door opened, admitting Scott, Kate bowed her head reverently as though she were about to start speaking to a president or king. After all, in a sense that was what Scott really was, right? Anne Lee's appearance made her shuffle a bit nervously, but Kate kept her eyes glued on Scott's kneecaps.

"Sir," She began quietly, stooping to carefully place the plush toy just inside the doorway. "I...I wanted to let you know that some of the other kids are planning...well, a rebellion." The girl chanced a quick glance into the man's eyes, wanting him to know just how worried she was about something like a rebellion taking place, but Kate knew that through Shadow X he would feel that as well.

"Zanra and Alison." She added, eyes lowering again. It felt very slightly strange to look into Mr. Grey-Summer's eyes, partly for the lack of a visor but mostly because his eyes had taken on a strange quality since Shadow X that Kate couldn't even describe. "They want to smuggle kids out and fight you."

The idea of fighting Jean and Scott was so horrifying to Kate that she shivered involuntarily. In her mind, however affected by Shadow X it was, Jean and Scott were close to the saviors of the mutant world. They were only there to protect the school, and ensure a good future for everyone.

"So I just thought you should know." Kate finished firmly, still unable to look up in his eyes as she tried to stand straight. The knowledge that she was helping the school, and being loyal to Shadow X, was enough to make her shoulders come back proudly.

Want rose from where she had been reading, and ShadowX was not surprised at her sudden appearance. She had been outside their door for sometime, and as her presence had not been disturbing they had allowed it. The girl was expanding her mind, not gossiping, or being frivolous. Though classes had slipped from theory to practice in most cases, especially considering several of the teachers had abandoned them, education was still first and foremost the purpose of this place. ShadowX approved of making oneself better.

"Sir, I have nothing to do and I'm bored of reading," Anne Lee said looking at her feet as she spoke. "I was wondering if there would be anything that I can do."

For a moment, it seemed as if Scott's red eyes lose focus as he communicated in silence with his other half, and then, in that eerie echo, he said, "We'll assign you a task then. You're fond of computers. Come back in a while and we'll have something you can do for us. How does that sound?"

He turned his gaze to Kate, and said, "Zodiac?"

"I...I wanted to let you know that some of the other kids are planning...well, a rebellion." She seemed to be having difficulty looking him in the face, as if she was... frightened of them. How strange. Didn't she know they had control of their abilities now... It was wise to show respect to the powers they each held. She told them who was responsible, and what they planned to do, and this surprised them. Why would the children fight what was so obviously the right thing to do, the only way this could be done?

"Thank you, Zodiac," ShadowX said, putting his hand under her chin, and bringing her gaze up to meet his. "You've done the necessary thing by letting us know about this. You'll make the Elite Squad, yet." They pause and then they say, "Say nothing to anyone else. Either of you girls. We're going to see where this leads. They don't understand, they think this is about oppression and we are being 'mean,' by the changes we've made. But don't worry, they will understand. They'll understand it all."

They reached out with their powers, and wrapped Zodiac in a feeling of pride, of accomplishment, reward for her loyalty.

"We'll assign you a task then. You're fond of computers. Come back in a while and we'll have something you can do for us. How does that sound?"

"That sounds great," Anne Lee said giving an unsure smile. She started to wonder what the task was straight away. However, her dark brown eyes didn't not leave Cyclops's red ones even as he address Kate. It was odd to see his eyes. They didn't cause her to fear or to even worry that something might backfire. If possible the small blonde was intrigued over the fact he went on a mission and came back without wearing a visor. It was puzzling. It was a mystery she wanted to solve. It was something that couldn't be explained.

Anne Lee did not move. She listened as Kate shared her news. A rebellion, hmm? It sounded, dare she say it, fun. This would be a chance to find out ways to leave the mansion. Personally the small blonde saw no harm in trying to sneak out as long as she wasn't the one sneaking out. With the one she wanted to make contact with as the sentinels attacked now staying at the mansion there was no need to get out. The X-factor leader was now here. Still, though, a rebellion? Were the students mad to believe they could get past Scott and Jean?

"Say nothing to anyone else. Either of you girls. We're going to see where this leads. They don't understand, they think this is about oppression and we are being 'mean,' by the changes we've made. But don't worry, they will understand. They'll understand it all."

An all-knowing smile grew on Anne Lee's face making the corner of her lips curl. "There is nothing to say in the first place," she stated quickly. "They should know better already. And it'll be truly interesting to see where this leads."

An excitement grew. Was it do to the fact she would be able to collect data even if the job wasn't assigned to her? Finding who was rebelling and how they were doing so would make her week. Anne Lee continued to stand still. Another smile was offered to Kate. The reason was for support. The reason was for a job well done. The reason was because she knew her brother wouldn't like it if Kate looked ready to go over the edge.

When Scott's hand touched her chin, forcing her to look upwards, Kate prayed that he would be pleased. Her prayer was soon answered, though, because at that moment pride enveloped her like she had never felt before. Beaming -- literally -- Kate turned a deep gold and grinned up at her teacher, extraordinarily grateful.

"Thank you, Mr. Grey-Summers." She said, her very voice radiating happiness. Stepping back, Kate grinned at Anne Lee, inviting the other girl to share in her happiness, but her grin faded with Cyclops' next words.

"Say nothing to anyone else. Either of you girls.

She shook her head quickly, never having even thought of that. "No sir, we won't." The thought of betraying them made her skin crawl as much as the thought of hurting them did. "Never." Kate added sincerely.

Though Kate was not normally a dreamer -- at least, not after Shadow X came to power -- she found herself dreaming of being part of the Elite Squad, and helping the school even more. Her back straightened even more. So she wasn't the strongest mutant in the school, but she wasn't the weakest either, and she would prove to everyone that she did belong in the Elite Squad -- and in the school altogether.

To Anne Lee, Kate asked, "Have you seen Mittens? I want to train with him and work on my cat moves." And, though the new side of Kate scoffed at it, she just wanted to see him period. "And you too, definitely."
