Place in time-line: After ‘Mermaid Mystery’ One Day Before Ari Gets Beat Up by Richard Simmons

“Isn’t it amazing?”

“Mmm?”

“The sun, the sea, the sand?”

“I suppose.”

“Oh come on.”

“Heh, yeah I guess it’s pretty nice.”

“It’s so nice to be back together again.”

“Wait, again? . . . Who are you?”

“You mean you don’t remember?”

“Uhm, I think I do, but that would be impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible Milo.”
A pair of thin arms reached around the young man’s shoulders as a blonde haired girl fell onto his chest. “Mmm, don’t worry, you’ll see, everything will be back to the way things were.”

Milo and the mysterious stranger lay on a bed of white sand. It was hot, but they were near the sea so as the heat built between their bodies a cool breeze smoothed over them while the frothy tips of waves swept beneath. “Milo?” She whispered as gravity seemed to press their chests together. “Yes, . . . Elli?” “You do remember.” A soft giggle pervaded the air as the world seemed to begin to turn.

Like a wheel it whirled. Slowly the sands and water began to turn as if they were being rolled around a baking pin. At the center the sun grew larger, filling the negative space with tawny light while a halo of golden yellow filled the remaining area. Elli fell into the middle of it all and began to walk upon an invisible plain, treading barefoot toward the light. “Come on Milo.” She beaconed with her eyes and her voice. He would have followed but his body was weighted against the ground even as streams of granules poured down. Gravity was warped, though he felt it pull him and everything else toward the center the bulk of his back was glued to the outer layer. Strands of water and sand made an intricate web which even from where he was he could perceive, his eyes seeming more parallel to the sun than in his head as he observed both himself and the strange warping world. Elli no longer stared at his lifeless body along the periphery and instead focused intently upon the area from which he seemed to observe separate from the world.

“What’s this?”
She said, her figure becoming a silhouette as the sun gradually went from orange to red. “You’re hiding something from me Milo. You’re hiding a few things. What do you have locked away in here?” The girl marked by shadows stepped gingerly forward as the ocean and earth fell from one end of the rotating tunnel to the other. The falling water and sand formed a pattern, like a dream weaver. “Hmm. Seems even you don’t know. What could it be, we’ll have to see.” She laughed in a playful manner as she reached into the area from which he stared directly at her and seemed to open something up. “Hmm, pretty dark in here. Lets see, lets see, you wet the bed at age three, nothing too weird there, porn, well that’s to be expected, but wait, wait . . . what the hell is this?” Her figure turned from dark to pale, her features once cloaked by shadow illuminated in the presence of something that seemed to dwarf her quickly. “This, this is . . .” Before she could finish that sentence a hand reached in from the red sun behind her and seemed to pull her out of the winding world.

As she was plucked from his sight the world seemed to constrict. Whilst it winded down the sand began to cement along the outer walls and the water filled the remaining area. Milo could feel it surrounding him and as it was about to consume his entire body he heard a word.

“Coegnfrébrieay” The world went dark, he could feel the water rising to his neck. “Let me out! Let me out!” He flailed to no success until the water covered him entirely. Liquid filled his lungs. All the air escaped him, death was inevitable. He thought he was dead until his eyes suddenly fizzed open and he felt a sudden rush of fresh air.

He wasn’t in a strange magical world anymore. Directly in front of him Milo caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a long black wriggling flat worm of sorts. Its body seemed no taller than a dime and no wider either. The creature was about half a ruler’s length and seemed to try to scurry about the glass chamber in which it was locked. Thrashing at the walls, the tiny insect appeared to be well aware of its situation and not at all pleased by it. Milo, unlike the worm, was unaware of everything it seemed.

“Ow.” The young man groaned reaching behind his head to feel a slight bruise. In his dreams he had been flailing again, trying to escape the watery grave that seemingly awaited him in every dream. In the process he’d banged the back of his head (though not so severely as before) a good few times against what was some sort of table. He’d been starring at the worm for a few moments, it was blurred for awhile and once it had finally become clear he jumped back with a loud yelp and smacked his head against something. “Aaaah. My head . . .” It was painful but he’d been taken care of so he’d be okay.

Milo had been taken care of by two strangers who had found him bleeding in the park. Something had happened, and somehow this worm was connected to it. When the two took him into the infirmary they first stitched up the nasty wound on his forehead and then ran a few xrays. In the process they discovered something disturbing, that worm was in his brain. It seemed it had worked it’s way from the wound on his neck to the center of his brain. Miraculously it didn’t seem to cause any visible damage but the fact it was in there was a problem. Brain surgery would be too risky and the patient wouldn’t even be in a state to offer compliance. It was then a thought had been dawned that one of the local mutants, a miss. Kitty Pryde, could lend her talents to the situation.

Miss. Pryde had the ability to phase through things and in some cases phase things through other things. They would use her talent to hopefully phase the worm out and contain it. The operation was still tricky, she could take brain matter as well as the vile insect, but they managed to get the thing out and place it in a glass jar without destroying Milo’s cognitive faculties. So there they were, in the infirmary, Milo on the table and the worm in a jar. As he sat there half sitting half slumped all he could do was rub his head, tussling his hair about whilst trying to sooth the spots which hurt. “Aw, man." He groaned solemly. "Was I in an accident?” His vision was still blurred but unlike before it was slowly coming back to him.

It had been a most disturbing night indeed, after the panic of losing her image inducer then finding a beaten man in the park with strange markings on his neck. But even more disturbing was what they found once they looked at the x-ray images. At first she thought it was just some sort of blotch in the image, a freak error. Yet a second proved her to be wrong. Seeing nothing of the sort before, never hearing of such a thing just caused the hair on her neck to stand on end. Between the two girls a brilliant idea had been formed. With the help of Kitty, such a delicate procedure was made easy. Well, easy if you defined it as nerve wracking and incredibly risky. Nonetheless it was done and the parasite had been removed without hitch. Though Avery was not sure if all would be well with him now, she believed that the major crisis had been resolved. Thank God.

“Aw, man." [Milo} groaned solemly. "Was I in an accident?” Finally stirring from his dreams, at least he sounded much better than he looked. She made a mental note and she jotted things down to try to get some information about him later on to go in the medical files. With that done she set the clipboard aside to move back to the stirring patient.

Avery picked up the glass jar and peered almost critically at its contents. She was pretty sure it wasn’t even dead yet. It was a thought that caused her to shiver again. “I’d say that accident is far from it…” She commented dryly, her violet eyes moving from the worm to Milo. Who on earth could have done this to him and for what purpose? It seemed the deeper they got into this puzzle, the less they were finding out and the more questions that were acuminating.

With a silent sigh she returned the jar to where it had been sitting and turned to Milo who was sitting up. Honestly after what he had been through she was surprised that he hadn’t passed out. From the little she did know about the man, she could only assume he was a strange man to begin with. Then again, she was known to be wrong before. Her careful eyes checked his stats before regarded the sweet smelling man.

“How are we feeling now?” The elven asked as she moved within reach with a clean, damp cloth. She had cleaned him the best she could before stitching him up but the poor guy was just a plain mess of blood and dirt. “You remember anything yet?” She continued as she gently wiped the blood away from his hair line above his forehead. “Its been a long night for you…”

And so it was. Christ, the sun should’ve been up and blazing by now and any normal person would be rather tired right now. Of course Avery being an exception due to her physical makeup, she looked to Ari with a soft look of concern. “You tired, hun?”

Honestly, Ari had no idea how she and Avery had gone from searching for her image inducer to taking care of a stranger. Even crazier were the results of his x-rays. The minuscule teethmarks that she'd seen had actually been...teethmarks.

Thank God for Kitty and her phasing abilities. Ari couldn't imagine how the outrageous situation could have gone smoother. Where there should have been surgery, shaving of hair, and possible brain damage, all of it had seemingly been avoided. Hopefully, anyway. There was no telling if the man had suffered any inward damage, both by Kitty's hand or the parasite. Though Ari was more concerned with the latter.

The thing Kitty had extracted from the man's head had sent creepy crawlies all throughout the brunette's body, and even now as Avery was looking at it inside its glass prison, Ari was trying to keep her gaze elsewhere. It was difficult to focus on Milo though, when the black worm seemed to want to badly escape his confines. Ari's imagination seemed to go wild inwardly, imagining the worm busting out of the jar, growing in size, and subsequently consuming them all. Just great.

Ari moved a little closer to Milo's bed, unknowingly attracted to his sugary scent. He was awake at least, half sitting up, which Ari took as a good sign. She nodded along with Avery's inquiry, her brown eyes passing between the pair. How exactly were they supposed to tell him that a worm creature had bitten into his neck and burrowed into his brain? Ari silently prayed that it hadn't laid any eggs while it was in there. The mere thought caused her stomach to churn nauseatingly. This was seriously some creepy sci-fi horror movie shit come to life. Ari had seen a lot of weird stuff before, but right now, this was taking the cake.

Clasped in Ari's lightly bronzed hands was a mug of strong coffee, a slight yawn escaping her lips as she looked at the blonde man. "Yeah, are you okay? Can I get you something? Coffee or tea or anything?" she asked, raising her mug with a raised eyebrow. In this situation, Avery was definitely more helpful than she was. The young woman was a nurse-in-training, skilled at bedside manner among all the other things. Ari was glad they'd been together when they'd found him, that was for sure. At the moment, she was just trying to be useful.

Avery turned her violet gaze on her, and Ari smiled gently at her best friend, "A little, but I'm okay. What about you? Getting ready to pass out yet?" Ari had been up a lot longer than she'd planned, but both having the body accustomed to that of a night owl and the curiosity and concern she felt regarding the stranger and his situation had kept her pretty much wide awake.

Returning her gaze to the man, she said, "Can you tell us your name?" She knew she should have started with asking what the year was, and who the current president was. But John Doe just wasn't cutting it at the moment.

Milo had forgotten everything at first. Thanatos’ Kitchen, The Mermaid, and the dream were things his brain struggled to de-fog. Memories of waking up beneath a bench and being saved by the two women were also muddled, but, as his vision cleared so did the names of Avery and Ari (though he could not recall which was which). As he focused upon the two women his eyes seemed to drift more toward the jolly green girl. Both women’s figures were highly above his normal sights but the fact Avery’s skin likened itself to that of a bean sprout brought about a goofy, cock-eyed expression upon his face. “Whoa, have I like, been abducted or something? Because if I have you two must be from the babe planet.”

Looking around it felt like he was on the inside of a spaceship. He had seen medical equipment before but all that surrounded him felt as if it came straight from the set of a science fiction drama. Milo half wondered if the pair were going to probe him, the other half contemplating if it might not be a terrible experience. In a way, he was sure this was a dream, except, despite being surrounded by one beautiful alien babe, another lovely human lady, and an assortment of un-identifiable gadgets, everything felt too real. The images before him were crisper than anything he’d seen in the last twelve hours. Even more so, he remembered Avery’s voice as she spoke to him.

“I’d say that accident is far from it…” She had said, although he did not reply to the comment until after considering the situation. “Oh right. I remember. I went out to watch the band and then some crazy chick bashed me on the noggin. Then you guys found me in the park and . . .” His eyes widened. “Dude . . . you guys don’t have anything to do with that . . . right?” From his perspective and with his particular lack of knowledge it would make sense to feel that ‘maybe’ these two girls were in someway related to the case. He wondered what the chances are of someone randomly finding him, even more so of assisting him. Then again, when he considered the reason why there seemed a logical explanation. "Naw. Sorry. Must be crazy." Besides, they were both very attractive, so much so he casually crossed his legs as Avery approached.

As she cleaned his forehead he tried to keep his eyes off her giggly bits and let them slide toward the contained worm. It stopped wriggling around when he did this, seemingly starring at him with its strange, brightly colored, eyes. Milo winced with slight confusion at this sight and instead tried to focus on conversation instead. “Uh . . . I’m feeling better I guess. Can’t really remember how I felt. . . what’s that worm thing? It’s kind of creepy.” As he said this Ari moved closer, filling the space between himself and the worm. When she made an offer to get him something he tried to look away but instead found himself darting back and forth between the two women with no where to go. “Uhm . . .” He was awkwardly silent for a time but fortunately this quiet was ended when she asked him a question. “. . . Oh. Right. Right. My name, my name . . .” It took him a few moments to answer. Despite the anxiousness about him he seemed more relaxed than most people were, and his sluggish response only added to this. “Milo. Yeah. Sorry. Normally doesn’t take me that long but I’m a little distracted. . .bye this place.” It was then he realized that he had already realized this was not a dream, and thus there would be no reason for Avery to look at she did. “Uhm . . . actually. You know what. I think there still might be something wrong with me. You kind of look . . . uhm . . . a little green . . .” He winced at Avery. “And are you wearing colored contacts . . . and ugh . . .” Milo’s gaze shifted to Ari. He wanted t o ask if she had some sort of ear deformity. He didn’t think she was ugly, but, people humans didn’t have ears that long and sharp.

For the most part Avery tried her best to ignore the looks and odd things that Milo said. Obviously he was still ill affected from the drugs and the worm that burrowed into his head. She had to be professional, she would remind herself, and not be disturbed by his staring or looks he gave. Carefully as she tended to him she asked him a few questions to test the state of his mind, what he remembered and how he was feeling.

“Oh right. I remember. I went out to watch the band and then some crazy chick bashed me on the noggin. Then you guys found me in the park and . . .” [Milo’s] eyes widened. “Dude . . . you guys don’t have anything to do with that . . . Naw. Sorry. Must be crazy."

It must have been the look that he received from both of them that had made him apologize. His senses and better judgment were returning. Clearly if they had anything to do with the situation they wouldn’t have went through all the trouble of trying to help him and bring him home. Miol then moved on to reply to his current condition.

“Uh . . . I’m feeling better I guess. Can’t really remember how I felt. . . what’s that worm thing? It’s kind of creepy.”

Avery glanced over her shoulder for a moment, dabbing the wet cloth across Milo’s eyebrow and down to his jaw line. “Well…” She began, but didn’t finish. She didn’t wish to tell him just yet. Luckily Ari intervened with offers of coffee or tea. Tea would have been lovely right now but there was things that needed to be done before she could sit back and relax. With her yawn Avery was compelled to ask her friend if she was tired to which she returned a smile before replying.

"A little, but I'm okay. What about you? Getting ready to pass out yet?"

“Naw,” Avery shook her head. “I could probably manage forty-eight hours if I really tried. Still, stuff like this keeps ya pretty alert eh?” She joked lightly between them before their attention was turned back once more to Milo. And again, Ari asked him his name. One would think it would have been the first thing they knew about him. Still, all they had currently was his physical stats, his blood type and a worm, unimpressive indeed.

“Uhm . . .” He was awkwardly silent for a time but fortunately this quiet was ended when she asked him a question. “. . . Oh. Right. Right. My name, my name . . .Milo. Yeah. Sorry. Normally doesn’t take me that long but I’m a little distracted. . .by this place.”

Avery nodded understanding as she quickly jotted down his name into his freshly made file. After all, the infirmary was quite amazing. Far beyond in years concerning technology, it held equipment and gadgets that most medical doctors have never seen. That, mingled with a new environment and a vague memory and the whole confusion, Milo had a right to be distracted. At least he was becoming more alert with his surroundings. Just by looking in his eyes she could tell that he was more in tune now than he was before. Unfortunately that did little to prepare her for what he would say next.

“Uhm . . . actually. You know what. I think there still might be something wrong with me. You kind of look . . . uhm . . . a little green . . .And are you wearing colored contacts . . . and ugh . ...”

After all this time she had forgotten that his eyesight had not been well back at park. Though they had been closed most of the time he had commented on the fact that he couldn’t tell who was who when the girls spoke. His words rocked her out of the newly forged comfort zone she had with him into something of awkwardness and embarrassment. At the beginning of his words she tilted her head, wondering what he meant. But as he fumbled through the comments on her appearance she felt her minty cheeks burn like wildfire. Her lips parted, not knowing what to say, and she glanced to Ari before she sharply turned away. The warm scent of vanilla flittered in the air to accompany her swishing long hair.

She snatched up the jar eyeing the worm within. She could easily return his ‘friend’ to him. That would shut him up. Ari would certainly pick up for her, she wished to pelt him with the jar for being so blatant in his choice of words. But instead she drew in a breath, lifted her chin and pushed away her feelings as she turned back to Milo.

“Earlier I told you we came from a school for gifted children…” She began simply, trying to ignore her rose tinted cheeks. “The “gifted” part is basically a dressed up word for mutant. Both Ari and I are mutants. Unfortunately my mutation caused some physical attributes that I am not able to control, though I’ve tried.” Avery gave a little shrug, that was in the past. “My mutation is plant based, hence my coloring I suppose. Ari here is a glass manipulator and a wonderful sculpturer as well.” Her hand extended to gesture in a wave towards Ari as she spoke.

“I hope you are not uncomfortable under a mutants care. I’m not sure how you feel about the matter, but we had little choice in bringing you here.”

Her slender fingers raised up the glass jar to him as she said, “Now…do you have any idea of who could have planted this on you? Have you any enemies or someone you may have rubbed the wrong way?”

[I got permission to use Beast. And so sorry for the wait guys]

Ari was standing by, gripping her coffee cup and ready to help if need be. Beast had overlooked the extraction, helping them to decipher the x-rays and now he was off running lab work on the stranger's blood. The brunette couldn't have been more thankful to the doctor for his kindness and patience in dealing with them. He hadn't even yelled at them for bringing a stranger to the school, which was something Ari had been dreading.

“Whoa, have I like, been abducted or something? Because if I have you two must be from the babe planet.”

Now, this was a pretty serious matter. Finding an injured stranger, and then discovering that he had a worm burrowed in his brain were no laughing matter, but Ari couldn't help her reaction to the guy's words. She snorted, nearly spraying coffee out of her mouth.

She forced herself to swallow down the cooling liquid, waving a hand apologetically, "Sorry...Oh, I'm Ari by the way. Your lovely nurse is Avery."

The brunette was relatively quiet as Avery worked and questioned the stranger. When he noticed the worm, Ari did not answer, simply because she felt it was too soon to tell him that the creature had been making a home inside of his head. The fact that they were in an extremely high-tech lab, and that Avery was green-skinned were enough shockers for now.

Ari was pretty astute, and Milo's gawking at Avery was not lost on her. She caught his eyes drifting down the Newfie's figure as she wiped his brow, and Ari gave an amused roll of her eyes. Good thing Pietro was not there, or Milo would be dust. Ari had no idea if Milo had been around mutants before, if he was merely looking at Avery because he found her attractive, or if he was gawking because she was physically mutated.

Milo answered that question for her. His words came, and though Ari did not find them to be very harsh, it wasn't her looks that were being commented on. She couldn't blame Avery for her reaction, especially when she knew that the mutant felt self-conscious about it in the first place. Avery caught her eye and Ari gave her an apologetic smile, the familiar scent of Avery's embarrassment filling the air. If Ari had known Milo better, she might have punched him in the arm.

Sighing in slight aggravation, Ari stepped forward, her brown-eyes shifting toward Milo, "Yeah, we're mutants. This is Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Mutie school. Some of us have devices that cloak our physical mutations. Like Avery here, though I don't think she needs to. That's why we were in the park in the first place. She'd lost it."

Ari stood firmly by her belief that mutants should not be forced to cloak their appearances to fit in, especially when she felt that a change in pigment or hair color sometimes made the person more interesting and attractive. But then again, Ari was an artist, and 'boring' was never something she'd be interested in.

Avery chose that moment to raise the glass jar, and Ari looked toward Milo, contorting her lips apologetically, "Yeah...that was kind of...in your brain." Well the news had been broken, now to see how he'd take it.
