[Time of Day: Morning Place in Timeline: July 25th] Callisto had not come upon her decision lightly. No, it had definitely taken a lot of thought and hesitance on her part. Particularly with the memory of her battle on the school grounds versus a mutant she later learned to be called Quicksand. The idea that something like ShadowX could happen again lingered on her mind, but she could not deny that her foe on the school's grounds had been a worthy opponent. Like any normal child, Callisto had attended elementary school, middle school, and high school. Hell, she'd even finished. She knew that it was important to be smart enough. Did she put much stock into education for her kind? Not really. But perhaps she was thinking with the bitter part of her mind. Artie was 8 years old, and he deserved to be given the opportunity to learn basic things that she could not teach him. More importantly, she was aware that the Institute would also help train him in his powers. For this reason alone, Callisto had decided it was important for Artie to go to the mutant school. Quicksand had wielded his abilities like a strong warrior. Callisto wanted to see Artie do the same. They had exited from the nearest manhole to the mansion, Callisto deciding that they would not use the one that led directly onto the grounds. After all, they were trying to make a good impression here. Toward the school they strode, Callisto being relatively quiet as she usually was. Inwardly, she was pained by the idea that Artie would not live in the Alley during the week anymore. Or at least, that was what she had decided. No telling if the mansion's professors would agree. His absence would surely be felt, but it needed to be done. For his own good. Glancing sideways, she said gruffly, "Artie, stand up straight." With his appearance, Artie had no chances of going to a normal school. But this was a mutant school, and during the battle, Callisto had spied a few not-so-normal-looking mutants. Maybe Artie would fit right in. Someone had let them into the gates, and now she entered the school with the children beside her. "Hello?" she called gruffly, "Anybody around?" Inside, she noted that it was a gorgeous school. Far more swanky than anything you'd see in the tunnels. She wondered what attending this school would do to Artie. Whether it would change his attitude about living in darkness. Inwardly, Callisto hoped that she was making the right choice. |

Blink was still thinking about how exactly to say what she was thinking… It was Clarice that had noted that the fabled Callisto, someone who had helped during the Shadow X turmoil, was approaching the gates. She had done a little digging, and a lot of question asking, in order to figure out that she basically took in mutants that were physically too extreme for the outside world. Blink knew, that if she hadn’t been brought to this school, that she likely would have found her home under the streets and in the sewers with her. When she noticed them, she teleported inside from the roof where she was sitting, and pressed the button to allow them to enter the gates. She watched them from there, on the monitors, as the gates closed behind them and she marched herself and the young one next to her up to the front doors, and into the main entranceway. She seemed reluctant… hesitant even… as though the decision to come here had not come lightly, nor was something that she was completely agreeing to do. Still, that didn’t mean that she wasn’t welcome… anyone, from what she understood, was welcome at Xavier’s. -BLINK- With a flash of pink light, Clarice teleported to the railing just overlooking the front door. She would have simply brought herself to the main floor to begin with, but considering the woman had a child with her, the last thing that she wanted to do was scare him. Besides, considering the things that she had heard about Callisto, startling her could easily wind up with knives flying in her general direction. That could be painful… as well as a bad start to finally meeting the woman. “Hello, welcome to Xavier’s,” she called out, dressed in her amazon-style green outfit and slowly coming down the stairs, her pupil-less green eyes locked on Callisto and the boy next to him. Still, why would she be coming here? Callisto had often been described as someone with a high temperament, full of pride, and not willing to accept help most of the time, from anyone. So why was she here now? She wouldn’t ask that directly… she knew the answer would come. She wanted to say something along the lines of 'Thank You' for taking in mutants that wouldn't be accepted by society and didn't have much choice in hiding what they were because of a physical mutation. As someone who had pink skin and hair, green eyes without pupils and odd markings on her face, she could easily fit in with Callisto's group. Still, she couldn't get the words out of her mouth... |

Artie had been the one to ask for this, but he was scared to death now, absolutely scared to death. He wasn't very old, and he wasn't very big. He hadn't been to school since kindergarten when he began to change. He spent a year in his daddy's hospital until the bad guys killed his daddy and Callisto saved him and took him to the Morlocks. He was so happy she'd done it, and he was so happy to be a Morlock, but he wanted to learn, he really did. He wanted to go to school, and grow up so that he could be something that Callisto would be proud of. Maybe he would be president someday and make all the mutants and all the humans live in peace and Callisto and his friends wouldn't have to be so cold and hungry and scared all the time. So, he had asked to go to the school that Kate and his new friend Valyn went so that he could be smart. He would always be a Morlock, but maybe someday he could make it so that being a Morlock didn't mean being unwanted. He was trying to be a brave boy, and do the only thing he could to make things right. But it was very scary to have all his few belongings packed in his little backpack, walking next to Callisto with hurried, determined steps to hide that maybe he didn't want to do this after all. She told him to straighten up, and he didn't even realize he was slumping. They were going to the School Uptop, and he didn't know anything about it except that everyone there was a mutant like they were, even though most of them were older than him. They entered and Callisto called out for someone to greet them. There was a blink of pink light and suddenly in front of them was a lady who was as pink has he was! Pink! He looked up at her, his eyes wide, his jaw dropped. He pointed up at her, and turned to Callisto. He tapped his fingers on his cheek, to indicate that she looked like him, all pink and pretty. He looked back at the lady and waved, timidly. Maybe... maybe this school wasn't going to be so scary... |

[ OOC: Hope you don't mind me sliding in here... ] The school wasn't his friend. This place was just mired in bad memories, in jockeying, trite attempts at dominance ... and trumped-up quasi-authority. All it took was Warren's outburst to give him the excuse to leave ... but that didn't mean it wasn't the kind of place for others. And it was always nice, to see a familiar presence in an unfamiliar locale. He'd come from the rear entrance, just by the basketball courts, from having a smoke -- right into the main foyer, where Callisto and Artie were, just as Blink made her sudden greeting. The pair would likely know him -- Callisto, most certainly. She was the one that offered the invitation to join the Morlocks ... which he took. Xavier's Institute evidently wasn't where he was destined to be -- at least, not full-time. " ... S'a nice place, where he's gonna be met with nothin' but open arms," he uttered out in his deep tone, the faintest of smiles cracking his usually heavy and severe features, looking to Callisto, hand just at Blink's shoulder. "... They'll push his abilities far. ... 'n however far Artie wants t'take 'em, they'll let him, for the most part." A glance, to the pink-skinned boy -- that smile seemed to open up a tiny bit more. Whether it was in the school, or in the tunnels ... the kids always seemed to bring the best out in the hulking, burly mutant. It wasn't by much, but it was the smallest step in him being ... well, civil. |

Lately, when she wasn't with Ari or Papa or one of her other caretakers, Rosie had taken to roaming the hallways of the school searching for things to do. There were only so many times she could fingerpaint, or play with Mandark the Duck, before she started getting bored. She wasn't allowed outside by herself, but it seemed as though every time she wanted out, it was too hot, or there was something else happening. Sighing, feeling very bad for feeling mopey, Rosie turned the corner into the foyer with a little hop, skip, and jump, enjoying the way the polished wooden floor seemed to echo back at her. Then she halted, head tilting as she eyed those present in the foyer. Megaton she knew from passing, as she knew Blink, but the intimidating-looking woman with the eye-patch (a pirate?!) and the little pink-skinned boy were unfamiliar to her. Not surprisingly, Rosie focused her attention on Artie, happy that there was a new kid around. "Hiya!" She chirped, as was her habit, as she stepped forward. Quickly the little girl glanced at Duane and Clarice, looking for any sign of worry or fear in their faces (it had become habit to do this, after ShadowX) and finding none, grinned broadly. "I'm Rosie." Little kid and mutant extraordinaire! Suddenly shy, she backpedaled a step, wondering just what she had interrupted, and if the pirate lady was going to bite. The other kid looked really nice, if a little scared, and Rosie frowned just a little. That wasn't good...she didn't like other kids to be scared. It just reminded her of her own fear. "Wanna cookie?" She ventured, remembering the jar in the kitchen. "Milk too...they's real good." Because if that couldn't help his fear, Rosie didn't know what could. |

Keeping tabs on the young ones usually wasn't so difficult. Most of them stayed more or less where they should, out of harm's way, in safe, harmless areas where they were well-supervised and a stone's throw away from a parent or parental figure. Then there was Rosie, who was possessed of a wanderlust and incurable curiosity that, as Rahne had been told, often got her into trouble. And so Rahne, being who she was, took it upon herself to ensure that the girl stayed out of trouble as well as she could. Naturally, for her, it wasn't difficult to keep track of her. A quick sniff of the air in her half-wolf form and Rahne had a scent to track. "Sweet li'l Rosie, yuir nae gettin' yuirself int' trouble before breakfast now, are y-" Rahne almost didn't notice that there were guests present until she walked into the room, reflexively shifting out of wolf-form into her normal humanoid one and straightening up immediately. These guests were... distinctive enough, to be sure, especially to Rahne's canine senses. Their scent was sharp, pungent, and not entirely pleasant. To anyone else, it probably wouldn't have been so bad, but to Rahne, the scent of the New York subway system hit her like a Mack truck on the open freeway. She didn't intend to reel back from the scent, and she managed to catch herself before it had become painfully obvious, but clearly the aroma was noticed. "Um, hello. Welcome t' Xavier's, ma'am, young sir... can I help ye with anythin'?" |

Voices... Quite a few of them. As they drifted up to Victor, he cracked an eye glancing at those who had woken him up. Lately, he'd been catching up on some well deserved sleep. He hasn't slept very much in the last month or so, and when he did, it had never been a sound sleep. He was about to tune them out and return to his nap upon an oddly comfortable tangle of branches when he noticed the woman and the pink kid. That was the Morlock lady. The hell was her name again? In any case, he felt he should speak to her. She harbored, protected mutants like him. He felt like he should at least know her name. For a moment he wondered if he would be interrupting their conversation, if they were talking about something important. But then it was too late. He was already falling from his perch, his skin and clothing returning to it's normal color. He landed in a crouched position, to absorb some of the shock from falling, (he'd been rather high, you see) then stood. He paused before speaking. "Hi... My name's Vic." |

Riptide was a bit excited to be going to the big house that he had seen at night a few weeks ago up close and in daylight hours. He had to wear clothes though and that was bothering him somewhat as they were itchy and scratchy against his scaly skin. It was needed for their trip up top but for what reason was somewhat lost on him. He knew they were going there to learn stuff but really he thought he knew enough for his own needs. He could survive in a place no one could get to him or hurt him and that was something no one could really say except him. It was possible though that he needed something else that he didn't already know and that's why he came here with Callisto and Artie. She had made a very good explanation as to why they were going and if she said he needed to come too then he was going too. She wouldn't make a rash decision like this as she protected everyone and didn't trust many outsider's. It would be fun anyway to see the cat boy again and see if he could catch him again. He would make a good playmate to say the least and he couldn't wait to play with new friends. He crawled out of one of the manhole covers somewhat behind as he had been distracted by something shiny and stopped to pick it up and after a careful examination of the object he placed it in his pocket only to notice that Artie and Callisto had gotten far ahead of him. He was a bit out of breath when he finally caught back up to them and they were already at the mansion talking to people. There were so many already that it was a bit strange but also pretty cool. He ran over to Callisto with his feet squishing as he went as he was still fairly wet from his normal routine of swimming in the ocean. "Sorry I got distracted by something." He held up the broken pocket watch he had picked up on his way here. It was a normal thing for him to be easily distracted by shiny things because he scavenged everything he could get his hands on. Shiny things were just the first things to get noticed by him. He then turned his attention over to the others who were gathered around as well. "Hi I'm Riptide." He waved his wet hand around probably splashing a few people with a small bit of water as he did so. |

The pink-skinned woman that appeared suddenly was not what Callisto had been expecting. No, she had not expected Artie to be surrounded by another mutant that practically shared his physical mutation. She caught the look on Artie's face and she smiled briefly, "Yes, just like you." Megaton appeared and Callisto smirked just slightly at him. He was one of her own now, or she considered him so. He had helped them, shown that he was capable of being more than the broke drunk she'd found him as. She was glad to see him doing relatively well. "Megaton, good. That's why we're here. Artie and Riptide need to learn control over their abilities while they still can..." She felt she didn't need to say that if the people at the mansion didn't treat her mutants well, they would be receiving a nasty visit from her. A cute little girl appeared and Callisto's mouth curved up in reply. Children had a softening way with her. And she placed her hand on Artie's shoulder, "You can go if you wish..." All sorts of smells were coming at her, so much more amplified than normal ones. Some of the mutants smelled like perfume, Duane smelled harshly of the cigarette he'd just smoked. Rahne appeared, and another scent was added to the mix. Standing tall, Callisto said, "Hello. I am Callisto, this is Artie and Riptide. I am returning one of your own. Valyn. He wandered into our tunnels not long ago. I was...hoping that they too could join your school." It was not easy to ask for this kind of thing, and Callisto didn't really have money of any kind to pay for their education. "I would be grateful." And then a boy..a lizard boy had fallen at her feet. Callisto took a step back, always on the defensive, before realizing that he was just a teenager. A student, no doubt. Green-skinned... For a moment, Callisto wondered how all of these mutants got along outside in the real world. They weren't that different than her Morlocks, and yet, they were not hiding. "Hello Vic. I'm Callisto. Leader of the Morlocks." |

Duane gave him some encouragement and that made Artie feel a little better because Duane was big and brave and someday if he wanted to be big and brave too he would have to follow what Duane said, because who better to know how to be big then someone who was big? Artie was eight. It made perfect sense to him. "Hiya! I'm Rosie." said a little girl suddenly skipping up to them and Artie beamed so wide his face nearly split in half. He looked down at her and he was little himself, but he knew she wouldn't be able to read his holograms so he could tell her his name. He put his finger in his mouth and looked helplessly at Callisto. The girl then offered a cookie and milk and the helplessness became pleading. A cookie? Milk? Those were like special day treats, because cookies weren't something you could find in bins very often and milk... well milk, you never ever got unless it was lumpy and yellow and no good to drink at all. Callisto gave him permission and he took the girl's hand. " "Just then a half puppy lady came in and shifted into a lady who wrinkled her nose at them and Artie pulled on Rosie's hand so he could get away from her because she didn't seem to like them judging by the look on her face. A lizard boy fell from the ceiling then and that was enough for Artie. Too many new people, too much action. His white eyes filled with tears and he pulled at Rosie's hand a little harder. He wanted to go somewhere where everyone wasn't looking at him. |

((it looks like the thread's grown enough for non-sequenced posting - if I'm out of place, I apologize)) "I think that c'n be managed, Miss Callisto," Rahne smiled politely, and nodded her head. She knew that her initial reaction in wolf-form was noticed, but she couldn't apologize for it without telling them that they smelled of homelessness. The idea of them living without a roof over their heads made her sad. She didn't know them, but everyone should have access to a roof over their heads. Perhaps it wasn't her place to offer, but... "I dinnae see why we cannae accomodate you an' yuir comrades as well," Rahne offered with a shrug of her shoulders. "I think th' school's got more room than we've got residents right now anyway." The image of cookies in the air catches her attention, and she looks down at the boy who made them. "Hello," she held out her right hand and bent down at the knee to be on eye level with him. "An' how old 're you, young man?" |

Travis couldn’t help it, he was sprinting. It had been an awful long time since he had seen her, and since he happened to see her through a window approaching the school, he was running as fast as his legs would take him towards the main hall. He had been in the library, and although windows do point towards the front, it was no short little walk to get to the main atrium, in fact, you had to go around… all the way around it seemed. Travis had considered possibly just making a door between the two places, creating it real quick, but he knew although it would be nice, he didn’t have a permit to build there from Scott, nor was it time saving. But he was going to make it before she left, that much was certain. Callisto held a very special place in his heart… and for some reason, every time she was around he did things… things he normally wouldn’t do. It was possible that it was simply because the pounding in his chest, or perhaps the fact that he couldn’t focus. Their last meeting had been… odd… and interesting, to say the least. It had changed Travis… but then again, he had changed a lot since then as well. So many things had happened… and Callisto had made it painfully clear that she likely wasn’t going to see him again. He never really accepted that, knowing that fate willing, he would. And now he was going to see her… and in one of the most unlikely of places for the young woman to be in. Rounding the final corner and only having a small stretch of hall to walk before coming into view, he instantly changed his pace to a smooth walk and drew in several quiet and intentionally deep breaths to regulate his breathing. Although it didn’t really wind him to run, he hadn’t run that fast in quite a while, and boots were not optimal for running anyway. As he rounded the corner, he was his normal collected self, but it was obvious that he had changed drastically since they met, even physically. He now looked a little rougher around the edges, a little stronger, and a lot more worn. The only scar that was visible at the moment was the slight burn on the side of his neck, but other than that, all the other wounds he had received were covered. He was wearing black hiking boots, black jeans and a gray, snug t-shirt. That was one thing that certainly hadn’t changed; his dress code. His eyes were locked on Callisto from the moment he walked in. The others probably still didn’t know him all too well, but he was the one walking around making repairs using his powers. He had fixed the main battle site, by now, and from the looks of it, the fight had never happened. He wanted to make sure of that, since, from what he had heard, no one wanted any remembrance of what had happened. “Hello Callisto.” His call was simple, and he tried to greet her directly, without drawing too much attention from anyone else. |

The puppy lady who didn't like them crouched down in front of him and offered her hand... paw? Artie didn't look up at her because he didn't want her to see the tears on his pink cheeks. "Hello, An' how old 're you, young man?" Artie, looking down at his very worn and very dirty tennis shoes that were a good two sizes too big for him, answered his question the only way he knew how since his skin turned pink, his blond hair fell out and his voice disappeared. " "The hologram was very small and directly in front of Artie's face so that no one could see him. He wanted to make friends. He wanted to be good. He wanted to go to school and know people, but Artie had grown very used to the protection of the Morlocks who didn't stare at him or crowd around like this. They all tended to lay claim to their space, and though Artie usually hovered around Callisto, he was still not accustomed to being the center of attention and wanted to be somewhere else. He untangled his hands from Rosie's and covered his face as the hologram poofed away, his little shoulders hitching in overwhelmed sobs as silent as ever. He was a big boy at eight, too old to be crying, but in reality he was just a very very little boy, and this was a very very big step in his life. |

Eight years old, she thought, and nodded her head. A bit old, but he does nae seem t' behave th' way an eight-year-old would behave. Socially, he's prob'ly on Rosie's level. If nae lower. She decided it would be for the best if she kept her full attention on the boy, who seemed to need more than most his age. She felt an upwelling of pity for the poor boy who must be terribly uncomfortable being in this new place with these new people. She would have to take him shopping soon, to get brand new clothes, new shoes, and perhaps several toys of his choosing. She would have to spoil him a bit, she thought, at least just to make him feel more welcome here at the mansion. "Hey, hey, dinnae cry, there's no need t' do that," Rahne said, and gently reached up and wiped his tears away with her thumb. "I'm sorry f'r th' way I reacted. M' nose is terribly sensitive when I'm in wolf form an' that was very rude o' me. But that was no reflection on you 'r yuir friends, I promise. Ye look like an absolutely wonderful young lad. Think we c'n start over? M' name's Rahne, and what's yuirs?" |

Valyn had been following along directly behind Callisto. He had run away, and he wasn't sure that he wasn't going to get yelled at for it. Everyone was probably very upset with him. Still, he had to come back. He couldn't imagine not coming back, where Rosie and Meghan lived. They were his first friends, other than his big sister. And she didn't really count. He still wasn't quite used to the sudden gatherings in the halls of the institute that happened from time to time and anyway he didn't know anyone... except... "ROSIE!!" he suddenly exclaimed, abandoning his hiding place behind Callisto to hug his friend. He smiled brightly at her, and said, "Rosie, this is Callisto and Artie, they're cool." He nodded quite seriously, though they weren't nearly as awesome as Pietro he didn't think anyone could possibly be half as awesome as he. "Missed ya." Vanishing from the mansion for nearly a month... he once again was worried how people were going to react to his return. Good kids didn't run away and scare their families... He let her go abruptly, going to Artie. "It's okay, they're nice here," he said quietly, to his somewhat older friend as he gave Rahne a confused look. She had to be new, she hadn't been here before he'd left... |
