Vic remained quiet, not bothering to converse. He didn't know half the people who'd shown up, and even if he did, he didn't feel like idle conversation. Instead, he stood slightly apart from everyone else, focused on studying the veins on a fallen leaf while paying only enough attention to the conversation to know that it was pretty much over. That was good, because he wasn't quite sure how much longer he could pretend to be interested in a leaf before he started questioning his mental health, nevermind what others might think (they'd probably think he was about to eat it, considering his looks). He looked up, deciding that if he was going to speak to Callisto, it had better be now, before he lose his chance. He had questions. Vic wasn't sure if she'd actually answer questions from an outsider, but it couldn't hurt -much- to ask. The lizard-boy straightened and opted to take the most direct approach. He wasn't in the mood for bush beating and Callisto didn't look like an overly patient woman. "Callisto," he began, paused to consider his words, lest he offend, and to give her time to remember that he was still here, "How is life in the tunnels? What's it like?" |

Callisto thanked the man known as Scott Summers, shaking his hand firmly before exiting his office. All of her kids had been welcomed with open arms, and now there was nothing but to go back home empty handed. She didn't look it, but a part of her was really quite saddened. She was so used to having some of them around, Artie in particular. He was a beam of light in the darkness of the tunnels and she loved him like a mother would a son. But this was for his best interest and she knew that. Callisto was not an overly sentimental woman and she didn't cry or fret. But she felt it. Though lost in thought, Callisto was an observant woman and she noticed the reptilian-looking boy before he'd even begun approaching. She noted the hesitance and a part of her knew that she could seem imposing at times. But it was necessary to have that type of personality when you kept so many people in line and out of harm's way. The boy's question came as more of a surprise than it should have and Callisto paused to consider it. "Well...it's certainly not like this. We don't have such fancy things and we make our own way. I lead and dole out orders, but otherwise my Morlocks are free to come and go as they please. Our main wish is to be left alone from society, to be left in peace. We work for what we have. For food and for everything else. In the tunnels, you need to be self-sufficient." She wasn't exactly selling the tunnels as the greatest place on Earth, but she was being honest. Callisto paused for a moment, to let her words register before continuing, "However, as difficult as that may seem. We are a family down there. No one will judge you for the way you look or what you can or cannot do. As long as one is loyal and hardworking, they are a valued member of our society. We look out for one another. Morlocks always have each other's backs. Do you understand?" Looking down at the boy from between a mess of black hair, Callisto said quietly, though her tone was even, "Do you fit in here? In this school? They seem...kind. But were it not for Artie and Riptide being so young, I would keep them with me." It didn't take a lot to see that Anole seemed quiet in a sense, but he'd approached respectfully, with his back straight and his eyes ahead. Small things like that are what Callisto picked up on, it's what she looked at to see what kind of potential one already had. The facts that she was standing and talking honestly to Anole, interested in him and his life were very telling indeed. |

Travis was a patient man, and normally he likely could wait for hours for something that he felt was worth the wait. It wasn’t like he was capable of being bored… his mind was always working, designing, creating, and configuring things that could be invented. But for one reason or another, Travis was getting tired of waiting. Perhaps it was the fact that he felt like his heart was in his throat, pounding away and strangling him… He understood that the woman leader of the Morlocks would indeed need to discuss things with the leader of the institute, but things were different now… irritation began to flutter through his mind briefly before being quarantined and repressed. His face showed nothing, but his eyes were locked on that door. When it finally opened and she emerged, he seemed to finally start breathing again. Perhaps now they could go on their little walk. But as she began to walk, she was intercepted by a reptilian mutant… who began to ask questions. Travis looked down for a moment, and then relocked his eyes with the young woman that was causing him to not feel like himself. He had no idea why, but she just put all his organs in a vise and twisted them… and it felt like everything was trying to get in the way of the two of them taking a nice peaceful walk. Still, he withdrew any thoughts and emotions about the subject, repressing them as much as possible, and still patiently waiting. Instead, he kept his mind occupied with creating a variety of things. In his enclosed hand, he began to create something… something small, and simple. Hopefully the woman it was intended for would appreciate the meaning behind it. It was the best he could do right now… and hopefully it would show her that he wasn’t going anywhere. Travis could tell that he felt far more for the scarred woman than she did for him… but that was to be expected considering the way things had lined up for her. She had led a rough life, had been forced to make extremely tough decisions. She was a leader, and a fiery woman with enough grit and iron willpower to outdo a lot of leaders that he had seen… She was a unique and interesting individual who had a special place in Travis’ heart, a place that would remain hers until the day he died. Once she was done speaking to the reptilian, he approached, hoping to remind her visually of his invitation for a friendly walk and a chat. As long as they got to talk a little before she had to return to her duties in the sewers, he didn’t mind the wait. |

"I understand." Vic breathed a bit easier now that he realized he wasn't going to be attacked or worse, ignored. He wasn't entirely surprised that life in the tunnels wouldn't be as simple as it was in the mansion. (Heh... Life here, simple. Yea right...) It wouldn't be a problem though. He could adapt. Vic wasn't worried about his survival. He was capable of getting by on his own. "I just feel like when people talk to me, even some of my friends, it's like they try a little too hard not to draw attention to my looks." Vic noticed a man he vaguely recognized from around the school, but continued. It's nice that they try not to make me feel bad about being different, and don't want to seem rude, but it seems like they sometimes think that I don't like being me. It's like they superimpose clear skin and blue eyes over the green." The tunnels might be a nice change from the Institute. It could be pleasant to be around other mutants who didn't have to pretend that you were "normal" in order to keep your feelings intact. In a place where everybody is different, there's no need for a lizard boy to try extra hard to blend in. "I understand that the Morlock lifestyle isn't simple or easy, but can I go with you? Even if just for a little while, so I can see it for myself." |

Callisto listened as Vic explained about his friends and she understood. Though she didn't have such a physical mutation, there were many in her tunnels that did. A boy like Artie was used to being pink-hued and having white eyes. He didn't know anything else. And most of all, it was who he was. Artie didn't need to look like the little boy he'd once been to be Artie. Vic seemed to grasp that concept, which still alluded many of the other Morlocks. He was fortunate that way. The black-haired woman looked down at the scaly teen, blue eye trained on his face as he spoke. He wanted to go with her...away from the school where it was so easy to have steady meals and entertainment when you wished. It was a surprising question and she took a long moment before answering. "If that is what you wish, I would be glad to have you. I can promise that no one in the tunnels will have a reason to superimpose blue eyes and peach skin over your features," she said with an assured nod. It dawned on her that she couldn't very well walk out of the school with this boy, though it took her a minute to realize it. "You will have to inform your leader. Scott Summers will want to know. I would rather he didn't think I was kidnapping one of his charges," she said, a hint of humor in her voice. "Will you be leaving the school indefinitely? I'm okay with a trial period, if you wish." Callisto placed a firm hand on Vic's shoulder, "Perhaps we will be what you are looking for, Vic." She had, of course, noticed Travis Kable nearby, waiting and nearly ready to pounce. The woman had ignored his gaze while she spoke to Anole, but now she couldn't avoid it anymore. He neared and she gave a short nod, "I see you waited. I'm sorry to say there's been a change of plans. We can talk while Vic is speaking to Mr. Summers, if you wish." Moving to her hips, the tall woman gave him a look that said he should begin speaking then, because that was the best option she was giving him. |

Travis knew that Callisto was an amazing woman, but he couldn’t help but marvel at her care and compassion towards the young Vic. She was a person who did have feelings, and whether or not she liked it, they did show themselves once in a while. It was that side of the woman, the warmer side, that Travis was hoping to bring out of the woman, at least in his direction. He wanted her to like him… maybe even as just a friend for now… “Yes, that would be great. I have so many things that I want to discuss, but seeing that we are short on time, I will be brief. You had basically told me that you were just having a one-night stand with me… but I believe it could be more than that. I like you, Callisto. I don’t know if I can call it love… I don’t know what love is… but… I want to find out if that is what I have for you. I’m being forward, but I know that you don’t like to beat around the bush…” He let that sink in, watching her carefully and locking with her eyes. Travis was not going to let her simply walk away without getting this off his chest… he wasn’t going to let the possibility to be with a woman who he believed was the most interesting and wonderful woman that he had ever known. He wasn’t going to let this narrow opportunity to slip past him, but he knew he couldn’t make it a demand either. “I am not asking much… just… to be able to see you… to get to know you a little better. You have your secrets… we both do, and I am not asking you to reveal them. I do want to see you again though… I don’t want you to disappear like last time.” Travis’ emotions were contained, but they were significantly weaker than normal, and were leaking. Emotion was tainting his words slightly, but it was obvious he was trying to keep his composure. He waited for a response… verbal, physical… anything, praying that his actions just now wouldn’t chase her off. While he knew that she wasn’t scared, he also knew that she wasn’t going to accept someone very easily. |

Travis began speaking rather quickly, as though he'd planned what he would say when given the chance. Callisto stood silent, but her eyes immediately took on a skeptical look as Travis began. Like? Love? What did Callisto know about those things? She knew only her Morlock family and what it meant to take care of them the way she did. Love... A young, unmarred Callisto had crushed on boys in school, gone on dates, she'd even had a few boyfriends. But that was a different time and she'd been a different person then. Open and accepting and willing to love. Her 'relationships' had been pretty shallow, both because of her age and because they were nothing more than a good-looking guy and a beautiful girl getting together. Adult relationships...the stuff made of guts and tears and agony and desire...Callisto didn't know anything about those. The opportunity that Travis was presenting scared the woman in a different way than any of the dangers in the city she might have faced. "Look Travis, I told you what it was. You don't know what you're talking about," she said gruffly, pale fingertips pressing into her hips anxiously. "You want to see me? Why, exactly? What do you think I'm going to give you as a partner? What do you think you'll gain?" she asked, confusion and accusation on her features. "I'm not like other women. I'm not relationship material. I have other things to worry about than what you want for dinner each night, understood?" she asked harshly, crossing her arms over her chest. The raven-haired woman gave Travis a once-over, taking in his assured posture and how fit his body had gotten since she'd last seen him. "If I want to see you, I'll find you," she said, raising her eyebrows as she spoke. Anole returned then and Callisto shot him a small smile, "Everything figured out?" She clapped his shoulder and looked at Travis, "Well, we must be on our way. You have yourself a good one." With a push against Anole's back, she led him to the doors, a portion of her eager to be away from Travis and all he was proposing. The other part was wondering if she was making a mistake in blowing off the only man that seemed to be genuinely interested in her since becoming leader of the Morlocks. [Exit Callisto & Anole] [ooc: this is just to wrap up so we can move on in the timeline, but feel free to post a wrap up, Travis.] |
