Time of day: Late afternoon
Place in the time-line: July 29th

She'd tracked him to Virginia. The only other dragon she knew of, save her and her little brother. Her father. It had been simple enough for him to escape the asylum, once the dragon in him awoke. She'd run into him first in New York... in the Adirondacks... That was how she'd gained the gash on her face. It wasn't so noticeable in her human form, simply a white line.

It looked like a scar, but it was anything but. In her dragon form, it was still weeping blood and ichore, and dripping into her eyes. Dragon blood was a very singular scent, and he would be able to pick up on it instantly. Thus, she was trying to track him in her human form. She didn’t want to fight him anymore, but he wasn’t seeing reason. Any time he went near human habitations, she deflected him back into the wilderness with a show of strength. It was difficult. She’d only wanted to catch him, make him see reason, make him see her and actually see his daughter.

This perpetual battle to keep him from hurting people, from drawing attention to the fact that there were dragons... it was draining. She was smaller than he, and weaker. His fire came close to hurting, so hot it was. She couldn't even make him confront her properly, let alone hurt him.

Not that she wanted to. He was the one that taught her to read, took her out fishing, encouraged her to be herself no matter what... the one that taught her to be a dragon. To be one with the dragon, keep a balance... how could he let the dragon loose on the world in such an outburst of fury? How dare he? He was the solemn one with the flash of fang and loving eyes... how could he break down and leave her to raise her little brother? She wasn't good enough to raise Valyn!

The thought of her little brother made stop in her tracks. Valyn. She'd said she'd be back. She couldn't return until she got Father under control. He was a danger that she couldn't leave unchecked. He wasn't in his right state of mind, and he'd hate what he was intent on doing. It'd break him all over again. And... if she didn't keep him away from people, he'd be targeted. 'They' would be out for his blood. He'd lash out at them, and they'd kill him.

Talyndal stumbled and fell to her knees. Her hands were now covered in soot. It was cold; this place had been charred a while back. The trail was cold, but at least she was on the right track. She was going to make him see her. She had to believe that he still could.

The trail wasn’t as cold as she’d thought… she’d walked out into the charred clearing, only for the sky to darken above her. The shadow blocked out the sun, and the sticky heat of the day cooled for a moment. Even without that, a chill would have went through Talyndal. This, this wasn’t in keeping with her father’s previous movements. It spoke of a trap, and she knew she was caught as the shadow grew darker - he was diving for her.

Cursing frantically in her mind, she tried to ‘shift back into her draconic form - not fast enough. Her eyes streamed tears as she was wrenched into the air - caught in his talons by her shoulders. A mere human would probably have broken something, or dislocated shoulders at the very least… it still hurt. Her stomach plummeted as she stared at the receding earth; she’d never been so high in her human form before. It was gut wrenching, and she felt somewhat nauseous.

She had no wings, if he let go… her eyes widened and she began shifting moments before she was released into the air. She plummeted, eyes tightly closed as she fell, concentrating on wings, she needed her wings! She wasn’t fully dragon yet, but close enough~! Her wings snapped open, painfully, and her downward plunge was halted. In fact, the speed that she’d picked up going down translated into forward motion. Feeling the air rush around her, she continued to shift as she flew. The blood dripped from the open wound on her face once again, and she blinked her huge brown eyes. She didn't need to be blinded while flying, especially when there was another dragon on her tail.

He was bigger than her, and stronger; she was faster. It was her only chance, really, now that he had finally decided to face her. She gained height as quickly as she could, thinking back to one of the books she'd borrowed from a friend not too long ago. She couldn't beat him if they grappled, but perhaps if she dived at him and hit him with her claws fisted? Or with her tail, maybe? Heat enveloped her as she was caught in dragonfire. It was so hot... nothing else could survive such heat. It made her injury hurt to an alarming degree - was it only the tough dragonskin that kept her immune to fire?

Another chill ran through her, despite the intense heat. Fear. What was she doing here, alone, fighting someone she knew she could never beat? This was stupid, and she couldn't give up. The horror of it was that she couldn't give up, and go back to the Institute. What would happen while she was going to get help - how many people would die because she couldn't...

Abruptly she stopped that line of thought. She wasn't going to fail. She was going to stop him before he killed anyone. Father would hate himself forever.. Determinedly, she gained enough height.. he was still rather far below. Pain racked her body as he shot flames at her once more. She wasn't dripping blood anymore; the burns on her face had put a stop to that. For the second time, she plummeted... this time in a controlled dive. The impact was painful, and dazed her as much as it hurt him. The breath was knocked out the dragons, and they were barely concious as they fell to the earth below.

Trees broke beneath them, tearing at their wings and hurting them in a hundered different ways even as they broke their fall. Even as they fell, they fought. Grappling with one another, tearing with tooth and claw... it was exactly what Talyndal had hoped to avoid. The pain was mind numbing, and her only thought was that she couldn't give up. She had to stop him, because she loved him, and she couldn't let anyone else hurt him. She just didn't want him to hurt anyone.

The two great dragons lay broken and bloody on the ground, no longer able to fight one another. Tal stared at her father. He was giong to be fine... she wasn't so lucky. She knew... Hot tears cascaded down her scaly face. She really was a fool. Still, she had to try one last thing. It was hard to keep the dark at bay, but she had to try. Slowly, painfully, she 'shifted back to human. The injuries weren't as obvious in her human form, but no less severe.. she whimpered quietly.

The sound still caught the attention of the other dragon. She didn't bother looking at him. She was done for anyway. She'd rather not see it coming. Therefore she was startled by the strained and broken words she could barely make out. Her name. She turned to face the dragon, with no small amount of pain and effort. "Dad?" she blinked away the hot tears still making trails down her sooty face.

"Tali, baby.." the man knelt beside her, his white hair wild, and his face prematurely lined... but his eyes were sane. Pained, yes, a maelstrom of hurt was held within... but it was him inside. "I'm so sorry.." He stroked her ash-streaked hair gently, unable to speak. His memories were broken, but returning with painful clarity. Words couldn't define what was going through his mind. And what was he to do? His own daughter, struck down by his hand... claw. What would Elaida think. Oh, Elaida... she would have wanted him to remain whole for their children. She would never forgive him this. His face crumpled slightly, before clearing. "Tali, I'm going to make this better... Talyn?" He took in a shuddering breath, realizing that she wasn't. Breathing. "Talyndal?" Oh, gods no... what have I done? My baby...

The fires had streaked from New York to Virginia. Dragons had been sighted in the skies, chasing one another, sometimes clashing. Bits of the fighting went up on youtube, and then on to the news from there. At first it was thought to be a hoax; as it went on, however, it became apparent that it was really happening. It didn't last long. The last battle had not been silent, though neither dragon noticed the snarling, the roaring that went on ‘til the end. The dragonfires had flashed in the sky, visible for miles on that clear day. There were scorched areas almost all the way down the eastern coast. This was not something to be forgotten or ignored. There was only one casualty, however. A girl, that must've been in the wrong place at the wrong time. White blond hair, brown eyes, and a horrible injury to her face - the upper right side of it was unrecognizable as human. All around that area, trees were broken or burned... it was obvious that it was the final area in the dragon fight. What the hell happened, no one was sure. Whether they were mutants, or real live dragons... they had both vanished, whatever they were. It seemed to be over.
