Time of day: Noon Place in the time-line Wednesday, September 17th Sam slipped quietly across the halls. Six years he had been there, and still he was getting lost. After the new dorm Assignments, Sam searched the Boys' Dorm Wing, but couldn't seem to find H01W. He checked every door, but still couldn't seem to find it. None of the doors even seemed to have that kind of coding. He stopped in the middle of the corridor, a confused look on his face. He noticed quickly that the W had an odd way of being typed. It almost looked like an 'M', but upside down. He tilted his head upwards, suspiciously eyeing the Dorm Room's Number. The young country boy slowly turned over the paper. His mouth gaping, Sam walked over to his dorm room, slid his bronze key into its hole, and turned it. He opened the knob, and took a deep breath, the bags on his back shifting its weight to the right side of his body. For a few moments, Sam stood still, eyeing his new room. It was pretty basic; holding the usual twin beds, walk-in closet, laundry hamper, desk, and computer. It seemed to be cleaner than his old room, even though his frormer room was well kempt, also. Sam walked into the room, placing his bags on the bed. The mutant smiled, looking curiously about his room. Moving even across the hall was fun; he hadn't left the county he was born in until he was eleven. Looking at the small bed, Sam sat on it, avoiding his bags that also rested on the bed. He didn't feel like putting his clothes up; he would later. Now, he just wanted to rest. He rubbed his eyes and lay flat on his bed, his feet still able to be flat on the floor, even when his head was more than half-way through the bed. He stared blankly at the ceiling, not thinking about much at all. Suddenly he jolted up, looking at the bed next to him. Soon, he contracted his cheek and the side of his mouth in thought, remembering that he didn't listen to what his rommate's name was. While he was being assigned, he was paying no attention to what was being said to him, thinking it would be the same rules he had heard dozens of times. Coming to the conclusion that he would know who it was when they came later, Sam stood up and began to organize his side of the room and closet. |

Place in timeline: two months after X-babies It was a surprise to find the opposite bed empty one afternoon. There had been no warning. Many people say the phrase 'if this happened a year ago' as if a year of experience and growth could make up a sudden occurrence that blighted you seem better. Yes, he had been in a place where people came and left without warning. By now he should have been use to it but even though it had been a year, he had not. All he wanted was a simple note or any sort of warning. When people left, people he knew, a piece of growth would suddenly revert back to a year ago. A year ago he didn't want friends because they all would leave, eventually. Through the halls the short teen rushed. There was only so much time between classes that every minute, every second counted. Luckily noon brought with it a longer break so there was really no worry of being late to his next class. Unlike most students Mittens wanted to be the first one in the classroom to ask questions about the readings or homeworks that were assigned. Everything about anything had to be understood. If there was a problem with only one minute confusion he would still have it explained. This was partly due to his wanting to graduate as a straight A student. The other part, curiosity came with being a cat (or at least turning into one.) That one confusion, that one curiosity was written out in a notebook conveniently located on the desk in his room. Mittens had to read it over before stowing the curiosity and all in his messenger bag. But why was he in such a rush? It wasn't as though he was running or going to be late. It was just, just that he had plans to meet up with Kel for lunch. Mmm... the regen was going to make fish. Thought of such wonderful fish would make any sane person's mouth water. And the smell... the smell of cooking fish made the wait all the more worth it. There was no way a simple notebook would cause him to miss any part of his delicious lunch. Maybe the memo should have been read more thoroughly. Maybe he shouldn't have thrown it in the trash the moment it was delivered. Having a new roommate just meant another person who would leave one day. Just like his last one. So it was a surprise to not only find the door unlocked but to have someone claiming the empty bed. The door had been flung open. Banging, it bounced back off the wall at such a force that it could have severely hurt the one still standing in the doorway. At the last second, right before the wood made contact with skull, Mittens stopped the door by grabbing on the knob. His odd hazel eyes never left his new roommate. "I've seen you around the mansion," Mittens commented as though he describing the weather for the fourth cloudy day in a a row. "My name is Robert. People call me Mittens." Not moving from the doorway he wished quietly that he didn't have extra appendages that told how he really felt. Flicking back and forth his gray and black striped tail moved in irritation. His cat ears drooped silently. Mittens didn't look at Sam right away. Why did he have to get a new roommate? And then, giving a full tooth grin the air about him changed so suddenly. Walking over to his bed he sat upon it. Being short his feet didn't touch the ground completely so he just swung them. "So what brings you here? Either you are my new roommate or are the person trying to keep me away from my lunch?" He said a bit more happily as if nothing was the matter. |

Sam looked around his new room, not thinking about much. He smiled looking about his new room, thinking about the, let's see, zero differences there were from his last dorm. Why he had to get a new dorm confused him; he hadn't done much at all recently. Nobody had moved, nothing was different. He was just...moved. Looking curiously about the closet, Sam slowly hung up his polos, thinking about how badly he needed a new wardrobe. Staying in style was important; who would want to look like an old guy all the time? Carefully placing his shorts on hangars, along with their matching belt. Organization had only recently came upon him, when, during class, his binder nearly exploded. Since then, he had been using his dorm's computer to look up ways to be a more organized, cleanly person. After hanging up half of his clothes, the mutant walked over to his computer sat down, and placed his fingers on home row, nearly having each finger on two keys. He changed his background to a picture he had found on the internet of a beach he had visited before he came to the Mansion. That beach was his favortie place he had ever been to in the whole wide world. Seconds later, an unexpected visitor walked in. Well, not really a visitor, more like a roommate. Looking undoubtedly ridiculous at his desktop as his (hopefully) new friend walked in the door. Nearly falling out of his seat after he said, "Hey", Sam regained himself and sat up straight at his chair. He took a deep breath, keeping his mouth entirely shut while Robert spoke. Keeping a happy look on his face, Sam greeted himself as friendly as he could be. "Hullo, theh! Robert, huh? Ah guess Ah reco'nize ya from around heh. Yer' the one who's got tha kitty-kat tail, eh?" Sam laughed tilting his head as he leaned back in his seat, almost searching for Robert's tail. Nodding his head in a quick whip-pan of the room, Sam spoke in a deep, fluent voice, "So, Ah guess Ah like it here. You're takin' real good care of it all!" Sam looked at the floor, spinning his chair to face Robert. He looked intently at the floor, as if he were inspecting it. "So, yeah, Ah'm Sam. Been here, what, 5 years?" He nodded, listening to Robert, what seemed to be, insult him. He didn't mind it much. Taking offense wasn't really his style. He sunk back in his chair, and put his folded hands across his folded legs. |

"Yes, I'm the one with the kitty-kat tail," Mittens repeated after his new roommate. Sometimes it could be seen as a good thing that people were able to recognize you in a crowd. People would know who you were by just word of mouth. Having a physical mutation meant you couldn't get lost in a crowd. People would know who you were but you wouldn't know who they were. At least with Sam he had been seen before. Nothing about him was known besides the fact they now shared a dorm. "Heya, Sam. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," he said before mentally kicking himself for being formal with someone close to his age. Wait, what? "Five years? You're been here for five years? That's a long time. Are you even a student?" In curiosity Mittens tilted his head as he asked this. He wasn't bothered by Sam's age if he was older than the catboy was. His last roommate was older than he was. Actually, he wasn't really bothered at all. It was just surprise to have someone who had been in the mansion for so long to be his roommate. Well, with that overreaction passed this could be a good time to get pleasantries over with. In quick secession Mittens asked Sam how old he was, where did he hail from, what powers possessed him. did he have siblings, and what was his favorite genre of books. As he waited for Sam to answer them Mittens scratched at the back of his neck. When Sam spoke he stopped and just stared at him waiting politely knowing full well he would be asked the same questions. It was only fair to answer them. Yet, the moment Sam finished answering the questions another questioned was asked. This was a curiosity Mittens held since his first week at the mansion. His old roommate had been new to the school arriving just after he did. With luck Sam would be able to answer this question. After all he had been there for like five years. "Before I answer my own questions I have another question for you," Mittens asked a bit shyly. "What was the Professor like? I've heard about him but he was gone before I got here." |

Although he sounded even more like a hick when he said, "The kitty-cat tail," Sam was excited. When he first arrived, this was a small school, where everyone knew everyone. But, of course, not anymore. This school now had more people living there than the town he grew up in. Sam was so excited to be paired up with somebody he actually had some recollection of seeing before that he just let his inner redneck start to pour out of his mouth. All of his thouhgts became less thought out when he was excited. That was defintely a trait the man hoped to grow out of. Sam stopped himself after Mittens reminded him that he hadn't actually greeted his new roommate. Of course, he didn't really mean to. He was just so out of whack with all of the moving around recently. He had been back to the school for only a few months, and already he gets moved to a different dorm. Without thinking, Sam muttered a slow "Oy Vey," to go along with his thoughts. Shaking his head, Sam looked up at Mittens, "Good ta meet cha, also, kiddo. Hope ya stay around here." He meant this in two ways: one, he had seen so many kids leave after their parents realize they weren't really at college early. But two, he meant that his new friend lived that long. He had seen so many kids die fighting. A small tear formed in his eye thinking about the kids he had seen die fighting with him. Quickly wiping his eyes in a sideways sweep from his left ear to his right, he tried to hide his emotions. Keeping his tough guy image was more important to him than almost anything in the world. He stopped his thoughts and focused his attention to Mittens asking him questions. To which he gave his answer, and asked Mittens, to which he gave his answers. But, the thing that Sam was most shocked to hear anything about was the Professor. He hadn't talked about him in years. Years. It wasn't something that he wanted to talk about. At all. In fact, he was close to smacking Mittens upside the head just because of how much he didn't want to talk about the Professor. But part of him was begging to let it out. And so, he did. But with pride. "The Prof...heheh. Great man. Had ta love 'em. He loved all walks of life, all things livin', and even sad stuff. He loved...everythang. Even Magneto. Ev'rybody loved him back. 'Cept the bad guys. Bad guys hated him. Ah'm sorry, Ah sound stupid. Ah just don't feel comforable talkin' bout the deceased." |

Mittens sat on his bed and listened to Sam. It was probably hard or at least confusing to suddenly switch rooms. When Mittens first arrived at the mansion he didn't know his room. He slept outside or on the couch somewhere in cat form. His affects were kept in his sister's room. Finally, he moved in with his new roommate. He too was older than he, like Sam was. Yet, Mittens couldn't really connect to Roy. This ended up being a good thing since the other just left. They were too far apart in everything. Sam might be too old for Mittens to connect to him in someways but at least he didn't seem overly serious. Sam told of his family and the types of books he liked to read. Mittens replied afterwards. He said the only family he had was his sister who was so overly flamboyant that he suspected she was faking it. She was also a student at the mansion. It was simple for Mittens to just say he was from just North of here. The catboy was born and raised in New York, the state. As for powers, he turned into cat. Nothing was too special about that. When it came to his favorite genre of books he just said he read what his sister did. Quietly he added that he was going to start a comic book collection. Batman was his all time favorite hero. Suddenly his roommates demeanor changed. Talking about the Professor couldn't be any harder than the dredge of good or bad memories that followed. Everything Sam said had been known already. Mittens just liked hearing it from Sam. Why? Everything he had heard was second hand. There were a lot of new mutants at the school that had never met the Professor. Mittens was starting to think of the Professor as a god among men for all of his accomplishments. He seemed unreal. Maybe if he had met him, then maybe... "Well, I still have problems talking about my grandparents. It's alright Sam," Mittens said. "You know what, one of my friend's is making lunch. Suppose to be fish but I'm sure he'll be cooking more food then that. Come on. I'm hungry and I bet you have yet to eat lunch." Mittens invited Sam because it would be a nice thing to do. He also didn't want to miss the smell of cooking fish. Mmm. However, Mitten only hoped that Kel would be cooking fish. |

Sam stood up from his computer chair and looked down at Mittens, his hands at his side. He attempted to crack his knuckles, but decided not to after feeling somewhat week. Talking about the Professor was just too hard for him. Kindly, Sam talked to Mittens. "I know you're newer than I am, but I -- I don't think I'll ever be talking about him again. It's just too hard. If you want details about him, you should just ask someone who can handle their own emotions." Sam laughed, and took a deep breath away from Mittens. He sat down on the very edge of his bed, pushing away his suitcase. With his hands rested on his thighs, the mutant elaborated on the questions that the boy had asked him. "I was born in Kentucky. Small lil' farmer's town. Lots of coal mines. Which is where my father worked. When he died, I took his place in the mines. But, one day, I was workin' with one of Pa-- I mean, my dad's friends, and the mines collapsed. Without thinking, I grabbed him, turned on my powers, and we both jammed the heck outta there with my fire powers! By the way, I have a lil' shield around my body that only comes on when I'm using my powers. My powers? I can make fire, but I really only use it to fly real fast." Sam looked down at his legs, pointing out to him where the fire usually cuts off at. "I don't read much. I was nearly illiterate when I took my Pa's place in the mines. But I'm finishing up my classes. "My family consists of a bunch of kids. I have nine brothers and sisters and one adopted brother. My sister Paige is at the Mansion, but she goes by Husk when she's out on the front lines. Oh, yeah, I go by Cannonball. So, I guess that's me." Sam sat solemnly on his bed, listening to Robert. When the boy said 'Lunch', the mutant turned into a hungry lion, his mouth gaping while he thought of a quality meal. "I'd love to join y'all." Sam stood up and felt his hair, making sure it was in the place it was supposed to. If there was a student whose mutant power was fixing cow licks, then Sam envied him. ~END |
