Classes were done with for the day, and Rahne felt she had done some good work with the children. They did coloring exercises, flash card addition, read some stories, had a show and tell session, and during free play, Rahne had given some private reading tutorials to Artie. She was pleased with how the day went. There were no meltdowns, no shoving matches, no hissy fits. Of course, it helped that there were only the three children in the class, Rosie, Artie, and Valyn, but still. Cooperation was good.

She packed up her things, locked up her room, and left a note on her door stating that "Office Hours" were to be held in her room from five in the evening until seven. This applied to anyone who wanted to meet with her officially, be it other faculty, or even the older students who just wanted someone to talk to.

But until then, she would be somewhere else this day, taking care of some business that she had wanted to do. Volunteering for the Patrol of Mutant Town felt good, it felt right. She was using her mutation to protect people, to solve problems, to right injustices, and it pleased her to do so. She had even pulled extra shifts after X-Factor returned to allow them time to recover from their ordeal, and offered assistance to her old friend Jamie Madrox and his fledgling detective agency should he ever need her.

She walked down the hall to Scott's office and knocked sharply on the door, feeling it improper to enter without first announcing her presence.
"Hello, Mister Summers? Are ye in, sir?"

There was nothing but water... Krakoa had vanished into the sea. The Coast Guard, as well as the navy had been patrolling in the immediate area to examine the strange phenomenon and Scott had been given SHIELD clearance to land his Blackbird on one of the air craft carriers and they had searched. It had been strange to stand on the deck of a ship the size of a small city and stare out into the emptiness of the ocean...

There had been no trace of the island, not even the normal debris one would expect, remnants of the structures that had been on it, torn tree limbs, anything that could be seen... it was just the ocean, just the ocean... Above where the sailors could see, below where the divers searched... just the ocean...

The sailors had been very helpful to Scott, very curious about him, but his SHIELD clearance, Fury being remarkably co-operative in this instance out of deference to Scott's situation, had given him a certain amount of clout. That had helped...

... but ultimately, it had been a futile search. Alex and Lorna weren't in the water, weren't in the rubble beneath the waves, weren't on any of the islands around the location.

Scott had returned disappointed but not disheartened... It seemed impossible that Alex could be alive... But Scott wouldn't lose hope... He couldn't... could he?

He was back in his office, now, at the school, and hadn't wanted to see anyone except Jean, who had welcomed him home with quiet hugs and gentle mental caresses. She didn't ask, didn't say anything. She let him go into his office, and closed both the door to the room and the door in his mind, so that he could have his privacy.

Until someone knocked on the door.

"Hello, Mister Summers? Are ye in, sir?"

He was half tempted to not answer, and sat there for a moment, staring holes in the door, his glasses the only think making that not a reality. But then, with a sigh, he said, "Come in, Rahne."

"Sorry if'n I was interruptin', sir, I... I wanted t' talk t' ye 'bout somethin'," Rahne said as she cautiously entered the office. She could sense his mood as keenly as could a dog or a cat, and felt the sting of guilt for intruding upon it as she did.

"As ye know, I was one of the volunteers f'r th' patrol, an'... well, I think it suited me well. I was good at it. I liked it, I liked helpin' people what needed it, I liked usin' th' wolf f'r somethin' other 'n huntin' rabbits, and... heaven forgive me, I liked hurtin' bad guys before they could hurt innocents. I, ah, well, I'd like t' sign up f'r X-Men duty, if'n that's alright with you."

She wanted to say something reassuring, something that would make him feel better about his brother's loss, but she was at a loss for what to say herself. She hardly knew the man, met him once during the whole Age Change debacle, but any time a life was lost, it was a tragedy. And she was certain he wouldn't appreciate her saying anything along the lines of 'it's God's plan' or whatnot.

So she'd just keep that to herself. If he wished to talk about Alex, he would, and that was that.
"Is there an audition 'r anythin' I need t' be prepared for?"

Scott did not consider himself in mourning. If someone had asked him, he'd deny it, saying there was no reason to grieve for someone who was not dead. It had only been a week since Alex and Lorna had vanished, and he was, still, he supposed in a state of semi-shock, and definite disbelief. He was not extremely comfortable with self examination when it came to his emotions. He could, would and did enjoy introspection when it came to his physicality, examining his response times, his strength levels, his agility in combat, and other situations, but ask Scott Christopher Grey-Summers to evaluation his emotionality... well, there was a reason he had fallen as hard as he had for Jean... besides the obvious, of course, that she was a wonderful, caring and gorgeous woman.

Rahne entered and began her spiel and he was, frankly, only listening with half an ear, until she admitted to liking bring pain to the villainry of the world. "Ms. Sinclair... I understand your enthusiasm, your desire to do good in the world, but not through pain. We don't fight because we want to. I don't unleash the power from my eyes because I like it. If you want to join the X-Men, and I admire your determination to do so.... I have to be certain that you understand this is not fun and games. It is not revenge. It is not punishment. It's sacrifice, it's desperation, and it's hope. Do you understand what I am saying to you?"

"I know, an' believe me, it shames t' no end that... that th' violence felt good... th' wolf craves it, I think, and... I know 'tis better t'... t' direct it t' where 'tis most constructive, rather than lettin' it build an' build until I do somethin' I regret, hurt someone I care about... I dinnae want t' let that happen."

Her head bowed slightly, and for a moment, she kept her gaze to the floor. She was worried of what he thought of her, of how horrid he must think she is.

"An' I know that I'm stronger 'n most, faster 'n most... is it nae m' responsibility then, t' use m' gifts in a way that helps others? That's more 'n just huntin' bunny rabbits at night? I know th' risks, Mister Summers. I know th' dangers. I do. An' I wouldnae ask t' do this if'n I dinnae think it was right. If'n I dinnae think it was just. I know I c'n be an asset t' yuir team, sir. I know that while part o' muh reasonin' is selfish, I think... I think on some level we all do good things f'r selfish reasons, we just dinnae care to admit it often."

Scott sighed. He wished the Professor was here, wished Rahne had gone to Jean, someone, anyone other than him today. How do you explain to someone that you can't surrender to the temptation to use your powers in anger, when you are in a state of mind that was driving you towards blasting the roof off the building.

"Rahne, I know perhaps that people see me as emotionless, as so tightly in control that I have sacrificed any really connection with my own feelings." Scott said, and his tiredness was clear, "But let me explain something that only a few people know. When I came here, as a fifteen year old orphan, I had nothing, no home, no family, no friends, my life had literally exploded in my face, and now some bald old cripple was telling me I wasn't even human anymore. Anger is not the word for what I felt."

He rubbed his forehead over his glasses and he said, "For a long time, I couldn't decide if I was destined to let anger propel me into violence for revenge or gain... if I would not be able to control myself, and give into how mad I was. The first time we went out to help someone, they through bottles at our head, unable to tell the quote unquote good mutants from the bad... I was eighteen then, just a little younger than you, but suddenly I was in charge of a team of equally angry mutants, all just as eager to see justice done in whatever way they could do it."

Leaning forward he said, "But like it or not, we can't do whatever it takes. We can't let anger lead us, we can't let ourselves give into the rages, even if it is within the perimeters of our power. Just because I can cut a mountain in half with my gaze does not give me the right to do so, even if it was to save a life. It is my responsibility as a powerful being to use that power with control and consideration for the rest of the world. The wolf is your power, but your power is not you. Understand?"

"I've got my own anger, I do," Rahne said with a huff as she sat down with a heavy plop, her hands clasped together as they hung between her knees. "I'm angry at m' bastard of a father f'r tryin' t' kill me, tryin' t' burn me at th' stake... I'm angry at the people who forced m' mum to lose the Center... but I know how to set that aside, I know how to release it so it does nae harm people. Ye've known me most o' muh life in one way or another, ye know I would never take m' frustrations out on innocents, ye know I would never let m'self lose control, I would never kill someone... 'tis nae who I am."

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Is it so wrong, Mister Summers? Is it wrong that it felt good to keep a bad man from hurtin' people? I truly dinnae know. When we were fightin' 'im, that is m'self, Static, Miss Parker, and Mister Madrox, it felt good knowin' that we stopped a bad man from doin' bad things to innocent people. Aye, we roughed him up good, and I do feel guilty about that, but... we did good, right? Is it wrong that it felt right? I... I want t' do good, I want t' help people outside this school's walls. Both f'r my own good and for th' good of others. Because it feels good to do good and because 'tis right t' use yuir gifts f'r the good of others."

She shook her head and let out a slow breath. "I think I'm ramblin', sir. Sorry 'bout that."

"And, it is not who I am to become a dictator," Scott said, quietly, "Who allowed his angers and fears and desperate need to help his people to be twisted into domination and cruelty, but I did. It is not who my brother was to be turned into a mutant supremacist spewing hatred and death in his temper tantrums. What I am trying to explain to you, Rahne, is that the world is not so cut and dried as good and bad, and that we must never develop the idea that it is ok to hurt someone, even the so called bad guys."

He shook his head, "To humanity, all mutants are the same, over powered dangers to the world that they know, and we can't say that they are wrong. You don't understand, perhaps, what it is like to have once been human, to become something more. Your strength, your skill, your enhanced senses as the wolf, have always been there, so you think perhaps that you are able to control it, to keep yourself from hurting someone, but until I can be certain of that, that I can know that you will not hurt someone out of your zealousness to genuinely do good, I can't risk letting you call yourself an X-Man."

Sitting back in his chair, Scott's shoulders heaved in exhaustion and he said, "But I can help you develop the skills necessary to get to that point. You have the drive and you have the morality, but you don't have the discipline. That's something that we are going to work with." He sighed and again rubbed at his forehead, "But not today. I... need some time to settle things myself."

"I... I understand, sir," Rahne answered, allowing her head to droop once more. She felt foolish, silly for this. She thought she was offering to do a good thing, but if one does a good thing for anything less than the best of reasons, is it still truly a good thing? "An' thank ye. I promise I will nae let ye down."

She carefully stood up and, unsure as to whether or not it was appropriate, placed her hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly. While in one way, he was her boss, her employer, in another, deeper way, he was one of her oldest friends, having known him since she was a child and he was still one of Xavier's students, that first class of students who had worked directly with the Professor. It felt like it had been so long since then, since the days when Xavier and his X-Men would come to Muir for various reasons, be it to assist in a laboratory experiment or to use it as a temporary headquarters for operations in Europe or to protect the Center from an out-of-control mutant, yet in other ways it felt like it was just the other day.

It was in this capacity she now approached him, more confident and at ease in this role than as the prospective X-Man. Her friend was hurting, and she did not like to see friends in pain. "I am sorry f'r yuir loss, Mister Summers... Scott. If'n there's anythin' I c'n do f'r ye, anythin' at all..."

Her head drooped and he felt a pang of sympathy. Scott did like Rahne, and knew she would one day be a very valuable member of their team, but she did suffer from the overzealousness of youth. He remembered how they had all been in their eagerness to go out and prove to the world that not all mutants were monsters, that they could do good with their powers... They'd been well meaning, but the control... the responsibility... It had taken years for them to develop. Rahne was a very good girl, and she had done very well on the patrol assignment. He wanted to tell her how proud he was of her, wanted to tell her that Moira would be proud, that the Professor would...

... But Scott merely looked up at the girl and said, tiredly, "This isn't a rejection of your help, Rahne. If I didn't think you had potential, I wouldn't suggest the extra training. Give it a few weeks and we'll evaluate your progress. Show me some improvement and I will be very ready to sponsor you as a Jr. X-Man."

She came up to him and offered her condolences and he patted her hand on his shoulder, "I appreciate it, but it's misplaced, just like my brother. We'll find him and Miss Dane, probably sneaked off somewhere without even knowing that they are lost." He rose and said, "Things are going to be as all right as we are able to make them, I promise. Now, schedule some time in the Danger Room, and we'll go from there. See you soon, Miss Sinclair."

"Alright," Rahne said with a small nod of her head, leaving her hand on his shoulder for just a moment longer. She wasn't sure if he was right about his brother and his brother's girlfriend, but to have hope, to believe against impossible odds, she could have nothing but respect for that.

She supposed that she shouldn't have hoped to be instated to full status from the start like this, but the way it would go would be fine for her. Start from the very beginning, move on up from there. That was as much as anyone should expect, really. She couldn't allow herself be disappointed at that.

She had spent some time in the Danger Room already, so she felt confident that she'd be able to impress there. Hopefully. She could manage, right? Right. Yeah, no problem there. Practice a little bit, increase her workout regimen a bit, she should be good to go.

"Well, I suppose I'd best be movin' along then. If'n there's anythin' I can do t' help find yuir brother, lemme know. I'm pretty good at followin' a trail, ye know," she turned to the door and paused to turn back to Scott before stepping out of it. "If'n anyone finds a trace of either of 'em, lemme know, an' I'll hop to."
