First, as space is limited, the office isn't expansive. There's a desk, a bookcase, and three chair, one for Bernard, one for a student or fellow teacher, and the third for when he needs to talk to the two people at once. (For instance, if he has to meet with a student and their own clergy) If he has to meet with more than two people, well, sorry, but you're SOL. The desk, even so soon after coming to the Institute, is littered with paper. He likes to read, everything from essays on Buddhism, to the New York Times daily crossword. His small bookshelf has a variety of religious texts, from his grandfather's Bible to an 19th century copy of the Quran, and a primer on traditional African Beliefs. In the corner, underneath the window, he has his acoustic guitar, something from his sit-in days. |
