Telepathy, Telekinesis

Something to consider. As much as we may want our beloved characters to have happy lives, that’s a Mary Sue ‘Happily Ever After’ dream. There’s nothing wrong with a little happiness in their lives but a story where everything goes exactly according to plan and the hero has no insurmountable odds to strive against and overcome (or not), isn’t really much of a story. I’ve been thinking about the likely changes in Mutant Town after the Sentinels were pulled from the streets in late September. With mutants given the opportunity to use their abilities more without Sentinels breathing down their necks, I think it’s likely that several of them would try to make money using their abilities, if they’re one of the lucky ones with a marketable power. And it seems inevitable that will lead to more clashes with humans. Take Alejandro (Jara’s retired character) as an example. He’s a geokinetic (rock/earth manipulation). Suppose he starts a landscape/construction business. Since he has no need for employees or equipment to buy and maintain, everything he charges is pure profit. He could charge costumers far less than human-run companies, since he wouldn’t have all of their expenses, or he could even over-charge, since he could do work in a few minutes that would take them days or weeks, and they would tear up the ground with heavy equipment. With him finishing job quicker than the competition, it would mean that he could take on more projects. Al is just one example. A person with super-strength could take the place of a bulldozer or lifting crane. Evvy and Avery could easily find work at a florist shop. And what about the terminally ill going to a mutant healer instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars going to a hospital? I don’t think it would be too long before humans started protesting and shouting claims that mutants are costing them money. And realistically, they’d probably be right… up to a point. People going to Al (or other mutants) with work means that the human companies would get less work, and they would start letting people go or go out of business. So far on the site, we’ve had anti-mutant sentiments come from fringe fanatics like the Friends of Humanity ( FOH) but hitting the average person in the bank account and they could turn nasty really fast. Even if people weren’t losing their jobs or money to competition with mutants, it would be a good rallying cry for the FOH to make people nervous. Just like political ads, a grain true and a mountain of hysteria inducing rumors, will convince anyone of anything. The issue of Mutant Tagging has already been brought up in the Daily Bugle (if you haven’t been reading the paper, you should be), and fears over money and increasing mutant power/influence could cause voters to approve stricter mutant laws. Does anyone have any suggestions for proposed laws? By the way, working against these laws and seeing that they aren’t passed could be something for X-Corp to look into. |

It's great for this to be brought up, Kim. I think about it all the time with Ari making her glass sculptures with her powers. It's not really 'fair' in terms of other glass workers using traditional tools and things. I'm sure there'd be plenty of people that would have a problem with it. Maybe I can bring that up in a future thread. |

I got caught up thinking on reasons why humans would picket against the mutant (and a possible reason why police could be involved). For someone needing absolute reason and sense to get involved in 'the cause' I put myself in the shoes of some of these humans who's business would loose money if a mutant set up shop next door. I realized a simple fact that some businesses need licenses to operate. In some areas one can't cut down a tree without a licenses. Heck, in others one can't cut hair without one. I assume that some of the humans would pick up on this fact. It would be against the law if a mutant started a tree service without a license regardless how easy and quick their powers cut down a tree. Not only do some jobs require a license, others require 'approval' from other faucets. Alejandro may be great at landscaping but does he have an extensive knowledge of sewer and gas lines? He would have to work in conjunction with someone with that knowledge, someone in another field. It would have been for safety reasons for the homeowners. A mutant's lack of a license to perform some jobs and the lack of things like issuance (in the unlikely event something goes wrong), government insured paperwork that's needed, or even the basic a requirement before setting up shop would all be reasons for humans to picket. Sometimes, there muse be a reason in order for them to be taken serious. Sometimes 'this is not fair, their powers are stealing my business' isn't good enough. Plus, there could be those mutants who are the faces (cause) of the protests. The mutant whose tree cutting ability caused the tree to crash into a family's home. The healer who forgot to remove foreign objects from a wound before closing it up only for an infection to start. How about this one? Where do mutant powers fit in the American dream? We were all taught at a young age that if we work hard enough for it our greatest dreams of success will be achieved. Yet, there's the problem, mutants can move walls with the blink of an eye. Everything comes so easy for them. |

Mutant day laborers. As in they could do all your labor in a day. But I really like this idea, rather than having humans just being bigots plain and simple it gives people a reason to protest that isn't silly. In fact it could even cause a divide in the mutant town community or X-factor, which would be neat. I'm really hoping that registrations business does the same thing because schisms are always fun. |
