Jet Black

January 5th.
11:56pm

After she was rescued from near death by the hands of the Scrambler Jet stayed in her room, mostly. She didn’t have much reason or desire to want to even leave her room. It seemed as though the monster was standing near her from the corner of her eye. He crippled her, emotionally.

It was late; there was no chance for sleep that night. The blonde’s stomach was grumbling. She decided to go downstairs fix something and go back up to her room. Quickly she made her way down the hall, and as she walked down the stairs her foot slipped and if she had not grabbed onto the side Jet would have fallen down the stairs. She gave a sigh of relief, but it wasn’t until she got into the lounge that it hit her…

Jet didn’t fly. There were a few other times she had nearly fallen or slipped down a few steps of the stairs but her powers… Her powers always, on instinct, made her hover a little bit so she didn’t tumble. Sure she would still grab onto the side but the lift from the ground let her be stable enough not to fall. Hoping it was just panic she went to get a bottled water from the fridge and suddenly remembered... what the Scrambler last told her.

"Let's just make sure those powers are all gone before I let you out...”

If Jet’s face wasn’t pale before, it certainly was then. She looked at her hands, after setting down the water bottle, and tried to see if was true. If her powers were really taken from her. The blonde concentrated as hard as she could, but nothing. She flicked her hands open and closed a few times. Still, nothing. She started to breathe heavily, eyes welling up with tears. She sank to the floor and leaned against the counter; putting her hands to her face as the tears rolled down her face.

Jet Black was no longer a mutant. She had no powers and was just… human. Even if the Scrambler didn’t get to successfully kill the blonde, he still had severe hits to give.

"Almost heaven, west virginia
Blue ridge mountains
Shenandoah river -
Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Growin like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong--"

Off key, countrified warbling. Jon Harper had been born in Virginia, and his clone had slightly faded memories of being a small town country boy who had one day pulled lightning from the sky and ran off to New York to exploit it. No matter what else he had been in his convoluted life-- entertainer, hero, husband, father, dead, reborn, murderer, hero again-- Jon Harper was still a country boy, with an ah shucks cheerfulness, and a mischievous streak that made him a particular favorite with the little boys of Mutant Town, as he taught them magic tricks and gave them practical jokes to play on each other. He wasn't the sometimes serious leader of Alex, the gruff Madison Jeffries, the impatient Pietro... He was just Jonny and right now he was badly singing some John Denver, thinking he was doing far better than he really was.

"West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gathered round her
Miners lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the--"

He wandered into the lounge and his voice stopped abruptly. Jet huddled on the ground, her hands covering her face, sobbing. Jonny was at her side in an instant, "Hey, hey, Jetty Girl, what's up? Tell Papa Jonny who he has to fry. No one messes with my girl, not no one, not no how."

Feeling him next to her Jet took her hands away from her face. Grateful to have such a good friend next to her, but there was nothing he could do. There was nothing any one in X-Factor could do. The blonde tried to breathe away the sobbing sound from her voice. After taking in a breathe of air and spoke.

“Jon…” Her voice broke from crying. Jet tried to cleared her voice and spoke again, in a quiet tone. “I think I now know why they called him the Scrambler…” When it came to her powers the blonde didn’t let it define who she was completely. But, at least to her, it was a part of her. A part that she loved, and even though her parents didn’t accept it she did.

The Scrambler took away a part of who she was, like a part of her soul. More tears streamed down her face. Jet put her hand to her head. Not knowing what she was going to do. She used to be a mutant. Now she was human, she was normal. It made her feel empty and stuck in the same despair and torment the Scrambler put her in. He had won.

Jet said something in between sobs about the Scrambler and Jon lowered his head, "Aww, honey, yeah, he was a real monster, but we got him. He can't hurt you anymore. Don't you think we can protect you?" He wrapped his arms around her, and though sometimes Jonny, just for the fun of it, was a little frisky with his fingers, he wasn't thinking of anything like that right now. To be honest, the only reason he did it ever was because it made people uncomfortable, and he found that to be amusing. It was left over from his donor and Jonny had been known to deliver a little shock now and then to the most stoic of X-Men. It had earned him more than one blasts from Scott's eyes, but he really hadn't learned his lesson.

That was the farthest thing from his mind at the moment. His friend was hurting and it made him sad. Cuddling her close, he said, "I've never been through what you were, Jetty, but sadly, 26 has been on the other side of it. I can tell you, from the point of few of a tormentor, that this is exactly what he wants. He wants you to remember him, to fear him, to wake up in the middle of the night crying out his name in terror. Don't give him that power over you, Jetty Girl. You aren't a victim. You're JET BLACK, say it loud and proud and fuck that guy."

Jon held her close and the tear flowed down her checks. She clung back to him shaking. The blonde hoped one day that she would be able to walk around and not be afraid. But walking around as a human, after twenty nine years of being a mutant; Jet didn’t know how she was going to handle that.

After Jon spoke Jet replied to him with a sobbing voice, “Jon… he took my power away. I’m not a mutant anymore… I’m human…” It upset her greatly. A vicious, cruel man who took away what she felt was like a part of her soul. It might have sounded wrong or selfish to say that the power made the mutant. Being a mutant was part of their blood. And a mutant without their power was just human.

Jet sniffled as she kept close to Jon. He was there for some hard times. Recruiting him, he fixed her jaw after it was broken, being turned into a child, Krakoa, and had a part in rescuing her. But how was the clone to help in this situation? How can Jet get used to being a human? It was something she had never thought of before. Still sobbing she spoke again, “I may be Jet Black… but I’m not Silver anymore.”

Alex had given the blonde her codename during another hard time. She had just moved in, and their teammate was manipulated and attacked them. The silver glow that overtook Jets’ eyes, enveloped around her body, and formed the shield and energy balls she could make earned her the codename ‘Silver’. And the Scrambler took all of that away from her.

Jet poured out her fear and misery and Jon stroked her hair soothingly, not even caring that they were sitting on the floor. "Oh, so having magical scary powers is what makes a person a mutant, hmm? I'm not really one for science-y stuff, but as far as I know, there's a quirk on the dna of people like you, that makes you a mutant, and you are a mutant from the day you're born till the day you die." He pulled her gently closer to him, so that she was resting her head in his lap and he said, softly, "I'ma tell you a little story, Jet Jet. Here's a little story 'bout a clone named Jon."

He leaned his head against the cabinet and looked up at the ceiling, "Jet, I'm not really a mutant. You know I'm a clone.... at least, I think you do, it's not really something I introduce myself as. 'Hi, I'm Jonny, I like fast motorcycles, warm dr. pepper, and oh, did I mention that I was grown in a vat, after having every gene manipulated and turned on or off on the whim of a mad scientist who worked for an obese crime lord with an addiction to television.' Jet, I have these electrical powers because Mojo wanted me to, which was why he took the sample from my donor in the first place. But I am not really a mutant. I am not even really a person. I'm a science experiment that thinks he's a man."

He held up his hand, encased as always in the grey gloves with the electrical circuitry in it, his fingers spread, "They stretched my powers thin, and in removing the years of practice with them that my donor had, I have no real control. These gloves do it for me." He peeled one off, revealing in the center of his hand was a metallic implant that snapped into a matching socket in the gloves. "You see? I'm a fake and fraud, but it's not stopping me from trying to make a difference. If your powers are gone, so what? We'll get Box to build you something to simulate them. Or, we'll take you over to the school and that golden shiny kid. I bet he can jumpstart whatever it was Scrambler turned off. You're still SILVER, but SILVER is not the most important thing you can be anyhow."

Jonny got to his feet and pulled her with him, "Silver's cool and all, but Jetty Von Jetenstein is the love of my life, and the one that really matters. She's the one who keeps me going every morning, she's the one who holds this place together. Hell, even Piet loves you, and he doesn't love anyone he ain't related to."

Jon spoke of how she has and always was a mutant. Eventually her head was in his lap, the tear still flowing down but her sobbing was quieted enough for her to hear him. The clone told her of a story, his story. No matter what he thought of himself Jet saw Jonny Clone as a man. A good man. What she would do without him the blonde didn’t want to think about it. As he held up his hand and showed her the metallic implant she stared at it.

He talked about things they could do to mimic her powers or try to fix what the Scrambler did. Everything he said, was right. Jet had to admit it to herself that he was right, there were ways to fix the damage. It wasn’t the story he told her, but it was the last thing he told her. When he helped her up and told her that her being Jet was the one that mattered.

Jet did what probably countless mutants had also done. She had let her powers define who she was, at least how she saw herself. It still felt that there was a major part of her that was missing, but after he spoke the blonde managed to give a small chuckle. Wiping away the tears as she did. He might have been many things; assassin, enemy, hero-in- progress, teammate, clone. But above all else, the man standing in front of her was a friend.

With a deep breath she said, “What would I do without you?” Jet gave him a solemn smile. Whether it was the crying or the comforting words of her friend the blonde felt herself getting a little bit tired. Even though she was tired, she still wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to sleep. She was lucky to get an hour or two every other three days or so.

Jet knew in X-Factor HQ with all her friends she was safe. But when it all boiled down to it, there was something in her head that told her she wasn’t safe and that she never would be safe. Feelings like those would take her more time to get over. But for that night Jon reminded her that powers weren’t everything. He reminded the blonde that things can be fixed, and with friends like her team mates in X-Factor she couldn’t ask for a better bunch of friends, family, like them.
