Punches from the Punch Dimension

There were few people who came into this school and weren't overwhelmed by it. Warren Worthington, Violey Vistagraph, a slight few others he could think of off the top of his head. His own first glimpse of the school had been one of the first things he had seen with his new red tinted vision, coming into the school blinded, eyes bandaged to keep them closed. The Professor had given him the glasses, saving him from a world of darkness, saving him from a lot of things, and giving him his first chance to see the magnificent manor that was to be his new home. "It's something, isn't it," Scott agreed, for the first time his tone lightening, "I was in an orphanage before I came here, sharing a dorm with fifteen other 'hard to place' boys from ten to seventeen years old. It was loud, smelly, and I was absolutely miserable. With the exception of suddenly finding out that I wasn't a member of the human race anymore, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when the Professor took me in. Well, at least after I got over being fifteen and having my life turned upside down, yet again, I did." He lead the boy through the first level of the school, pointing out the dining hall, the kitchen, the living areas, before heading for his office, "Your mother sent over your school records, and a description of your abilities after we spoke on the phone. It's an interesting power, passive and easily controlled, I would think. I'm curious why you chose to come and study with us." |

As Mr. Summers told him about the first time he came to the Institute Kelly continued to look around the magnificent home. It seemed more like a mansion than a school. The high ceilings, the chandlers, even paintings on the wall. It left Kelly breathless, he was so used to his mediocre suburban home and now he was standing in the middle of a palace that would make a multimillionaire breathless. "I can see why your so protective of this place..." Kelly tried to think of a way to express the mansion. "...It's marvelous." Was all he could think of as they continued to walk through the school. Letting his backpack slip off his shoulder he pulled out a notebook from the bag and opened it to a blank page and replaced the bag on his back. As they walked through the halls Kelly held his hand over the notebook and small ink marks began to form on the paper in the form of blueprints, a map. This place was so large that he was going to need it to find his way around. As Mr. Summers showed him the different rooms they became labeled on the notebook. When Mr. Summers told him about how they now had his school records and how his mother had told him about his powers he let out a sigh, his grades weren't the best. "Well it was originally my Mother's idea to come here but I agreed. She wanted me to come here to learn what it means to be a mutant and to be with others like me. Not to mention these days it's not the safest world for our kind." Kelly paused for a moment before continuing. "It'd be different if I had useful powers wouldn't it?" |

"I can see why your so protective of this place..." Kelly tried to think of a way to express the mansion. "...It's marvelous." Scott shook his head, "The school is not why we protect it. As 'marvelous' as it is, Mr. Hope, it's just wood, and brick, and mortar. It can be replaced. You can't, the other students can't, the staff, my family here. The world, particularly lately has been a very dangerous place for our kind, as I am sure you've noticed, not just the events of The Week, but the sentinels, the increase in mutant hate crimes, governmental regulations. This is a beautiful fortress, but it is just that, a fortress." He watched as Kelly made his map and he found the power very interesting, and wondered the mechanics of it. Was it a mental ability, an energy manifestation? Very very interesting. The boy complained that his power was not useful and Scott stopped. "You do need to learn about mutants, I see," he said, standing in front of the young man, "Being a mutant isn't about being the most powerful, about being the strongest, fastest, shooting lightning from your fingertips and turning the world on it's ear. You're a mutant because of a genetic twist on your 23rd chromosome. As passive or unimpressive as you feel your abilities are, there is no reason to believe they are useless. If this is where you think you should be, Mr. Hope, then we'll help you to be what it is you think you need to be." He indicated the chair in front of his desk. "Have a seat, and tell me a little about yourself." |

As Mr. Summers spoke about how it wasn't the sanctuary they were protecting but the students Kelly realized what kind of place this was. "So your like a family here huh?" Kelly had a few friends back home who had known about his mutation but they could never relate because they didn't know what it was like to be separated from society. To feel what it was like to be a step up from everyone you had known in your life. When Kelly said that his powers weren't as good as the others Mr. Summers stopped dead in his tracks, as did Kelly, his hand slid from the paper and the map disappeared from the paper. Mr. Summers told him about how being a mutant wasn't about having the coolest powers it was about being a part of something so much bigger. Kelly couldn't help but feel slightly dumbfounded, the small speech hit close to home. "Well I know that I'm not completely useless, like here." Kelly held his right hand over the back of his left and the map from the paper was copied onto the back of his hand. "I can do all these amazing things and it's been astonishing since day one." As Kelly ran his hand up his entire arm countless signatures that he had copied over the days since he had gained his powers wrote themselves over his skin, each had a different hand writing style. "It's just sometimes when you really need to do something useful they can't help." Kelly snapped his fingers and all the signatures vanished leaving just the map on his hand. When they stepped into Mr. Summers office Kelly took the seat Mr. Summers had gestured too, taking of his backpack before he sat down and placing the skateboard across his lap. When Mr. Summers asked Kelly to tell him about himself Kelly found himself at a loss for words as many people did when they were asked the same question. "Well I grew up in Cleveland Ohio with my family who's all human. I've had my powers for a few years now but my family just learned about them after Apocalypse, I didn't want them to be at risk by not knowing encase things went wrong. When I heard about this place my mother instantly got in touch with you guys and decided it'd be safer for me if I came here." Kelly couldn't help but feel a little awkward, he didn't know if that was what Mr. Summers meant by the question but that was the first thing that came to his mind. |

Scott nodded, as he watched the display of powers. "I'm a tactician, Mr. Hope, and by heart a pilot and engineer. So how exactly your power will come in handy in the future will be decided by smarter men and women then me, but there is a reason for your evolution, and I can think of no where else more suited to help you discover it." He keyed up Kelly's records up on his computer, and said, "Fifteen years old which means you'll be in the sophomore tract. We've about a hundred students or so here, from a kindergarten age, to several young college students... and only about fifteen members of the teaching staff, so classes are not done in a strict leveled fashion. You'll be given courses though according to New York State Educational Standards. You're one of the lucky ones, Mr. Hope, your family has been very supportive and co-operative, and we'll do everything we can to allow you as much time with them as possible. A great deal of our student body comes from less... productive environments and because of that we don't abandon our students at holidays, in the summer. We are a family, the only family many of our kids have. Count your blessings." He typed in a few things, and said, "I'm going to assign you dorm M108 with another of our new students, Jean-Paul Beaubier. He's a photokinetic with some speed based powers, including flight. I'm sure you'll have nothing in common, but I learned from my own experiences as a student, that one must be open to all sorts of personality quirks. My roommate when I was a student was absolutely everything I hated. He's my best friend to this day, second to my wife of course. Well, it seems that everything is in order, let's get you up to your room and you can unpack and start meeting some of the other students. Sound good?" |

Mr. Summers was humble, and he had a way of making Kelly feel less useless than he normally did. Despite the fact that he didn't have laser beams that shot out of his eyes, was able to move the earth with the twist of his wrist or pick a car up over his head he had a place in the world and here was where he was going to find it. When Mr. Summers pulled up Kelly's school record he could almost see the bad grades reflect in Mr. Summers eyes...or sunglasses rather. He knew he wasn't the greatest student and that was something that really should have changed with his powers, for gods sake the kid could copy the text book. But alas Kelly didn't work harder in school, rather than use his new found powers to improve his life he used it to pursue his own interest. When Mr. Summers said that Kelly was one of the lucky few who's family excepted what he was and that it meant he'd be able to go and see them, that was a little odd to him. Were some peoples family lives really ruined by what they were? Maybe having powers like that wasn't all that cracked up to be. Then Mr. Summers told him he would be rooming with a guy named Jean-Paul, and apparently he had some cool powers and would most likely have nothing in common. Kelly had been expecting having a roommate, his mother had gone to a boarding school when she was younger and had told Kelly all about what it would most likely be like. Mr. Summers asked if Kelly wanted to see his room so that he could unpack and explore around the school. Pulling out his notebook and replacing the map on the paper Kelly stood and replied. "Sure thing." |

Tommy had spent most of his unusually uneventful day writing a long and unnaturally heartfelt letter to his parents. He hadn't taken time out to see them in months, a fact made worse when considering that he could be back home in a blink. However, Tommy was holding steadfast to the silent promise he had made to himself to limit contact with his adoptive parents in order to keep them safe. It was turning into the hardest thing he had ever done, which said a lot considering everything he had been through during his time at the institute, but his promise didn't stop him from writing, and that is what he did. He wove together words to tell them that they were missed and that he was safe and happy. He even told a few white lies, saying he would come and see them as soon as he could. He left out a lot, there was no mention of Billy or Laurie, not a word about Kim or the Maximoff twins, he kept it light and breezy , he figured he owed them that much. When finished, he received a call, saying he was needed to show a new student to his room. He chuckled at the thought that he had been around long enough to actually being the one doing the showing. He sped down to Mr. Grey Summer's office, knocking lightly and entering. "I'm here sir," he said a bit softly, still a little uneasy around the visored man. He looked over at the scraggly haired student across from Scott, "I'm Tommy Shepard, guess I'll be showing you around." |

Scott flipped the intercom on the desk phone and called out over the school, "Mr. Shepard, can you report to my office?" He turned to the boy waiting for him and said, "I'm going to get your information processed, and get some household supplies for you, so, while I do that, maybe it would be best if I had one of the other students show you around. The young man I called is Thomas Shepherd, a speedster, and a genuinely welcoming individual, far more so than myself, but then as you can probably guess, that's not something that is hard to achieve." Tommy entered, a little timidly, he was a bit shy for all his speedster arrogance and bluster. Interesting how all of the speedsters that had been in and out of this school were like that. Full of themselves to the point of bravado, but deeply insecure underneath. He wondered why that was. Psychology was not his strong suite. That was Jean's territory. "I'm here sir," he said a bit softly, still a little uneasy around the visored man. He looked over at the scraggly haired student across from Scott, "I'm Tommy Shepard, guess I'll be showing you around." "Mr. Shepard, this is Kelly Hope. He'll be with us for awhile, rooming with Mr. Beaubier in 108. Can you show him around. I've covered the lobby. Show him the dorm room levels, the class rooms, and the grounds, if you would. We'll cover the other areas of the school, later." The meaning should be clear. The sub basement and any mention of the X-Men was to be at a different time. Scott offered his hand to Kelly and said, "Welcome to Xavier's, Mr. Hope." |

"So no more nets?" Kelly asked with a chuckle in his voice when Mr. Summers said that the boy he had just called would be more hospitable than he was. Moments after mentioning that he was a speedster the boy appeared in the doorway and Kelly turned to see him. Tommy Shepard was at least two years older than him but his hair was silver like someone who's older, and judging by the sudden friendly introduction he was very friendly and had probably done initial greetings before. "Hey," Kelly simply said to respond to the young speedsters greeting. As Mr. Summers brought Tommy up to speed on where Kelly would be staying and where he had already seen Kelly stood and slid his backpack over his shoulders once more preparing to leave the office. When Mr. Summers stood and offered his hand Kelly took it in his firm grip and nodded to his new teacher. "Hopefully next time we'll meet under better circumstances." With a smile Kelly turned and walked out the door, with the wave of his hand the words 'Mr. Summers Office' appeared on the map in the area he just walked out of. When the door to Mr. Summer's office was closed Kelly dropped the skateboard to the ground and climbed onto it, pushing off so that he rolled down the hallway in the direction that he had yet to explore. "So am I like the first to get attacked my first day here or what?" He asked his new guide. |

At one time way back when I was going to start doing some training sessions with Logan specifically designed to work with Doug on his ability to 'read' body language in a fight. Doug has a natural gift with it, but sure could use some training from Logan to assist him in this category. Just because he knows a punch is coming, doesn't mean he knows how best to capitalize on it. Even if he does know, he needs lots of help in building a 'fight language' all his own. I think it could be pretty interesting to work on this. I always imagined it to work in some ways like the 'weirding ways' from Dune. Doug with his intuitive genius understanding of all languages including body languages is able to discern what a person is likely to do a few seconds before it actually happens. This seems to give him enhanced speed (if he could ever master it) in a fight. So yeah, that could be something not only useful to Doug, but also beneficial to the whole team to some degree. |

If you don't mind. I would like one-on-one training with Logan. I know most of the training I've seen with Wolverine was a form of punishment, but I don't see anyone better suited to helping Kel train. Or at least giving him pointers. He's decided that he should train with at least one kind of weapon, and learn a form of hand-to-hand combat. He's not as squeamish as he used to be, at least about getting hurt when he's going to heal asap, and he's not clumsy most of the time now. He can push himself, if someone gives him a direction to go. |
