The thick file folder made a loud slapping noise as it landed heavily on the heavy wooden surface of the conference room table. Pictures and documents partially slid from the container – information, data, and pictures of members of the destruction that took place during the entire Apocalypse ordeal. Cameron Hodge looked from Senator Feinstein to Senator Bond – the Chair and Vice Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. That slight smile playing on his lips as he met their eyes… it was a constant on his face, as if he knew a secret that no one else did – an ace up his sleeve that he had yet to reveal.

Senator Bond tentatively reached out for the folder, sliding it across the gloss-finished table and spinning it around so that he could look at it correctly. He flipped it open and began sliding the top documents aside as he scanned the ones underneath; there were pictures of a destroyed New York, a green-haired young woman fighting a some monstrosity, a young man leading a group through the wrecked streets. It appeared he was directing them to safety.

Other photos showed a man opening the ground to swallow what appeared to be several diseased people, a white-haired man flying or leaping through the air, some exotic woman shooting red lighting. Another man with striking hair appeared to be commanding demons or monsters of some sort, and another blond man who seemed to be locked in combat with the horseman designated War. There were several others, all showed the same people in different heroic positions saving people, taking them to safety, or fighting off the hordes of Apocalypse.

Senator Feinstein looked looked on beside the Vice Chairman’s shoulder before finally looking up at Mr. Hodge, “How did you get all these pictures?”

Hodge’s knowing smirk grew a little at the question; he delighted in being able to show off the resources available to him in his position. He was not overly arrogant about it, however… Cameron was a diplomat first and a soldier second… he knew how to work a crowd of two or two hundred. That was one of the differences between him and Fury – one that he felt was seriously lacking in his predecessor and had helped lead to this entire debacle. Had Fury been a bit more fluid with his words, he might have been able to sweet talk the mutant community under his thumb a little better, or at least make them a bit more receptive to working together. Had they been more coordinated, perhaps they could have stopped Apocalypse before things had gotten so out of hand.

“Security footage, satellite imagery… a few personal cell phone pictures we clarified. In this day and age, it’s not hard to find the images you want.”

The Senator looked back down at them, “There certainly are quite a few of them here… a lot of the same people. This is the X-Factor group you were telling us about?”

“Yes ma’m. The leader’s name is Alex Summers. He’s the one you see fighting War. Held his own despite the fact that War was extremely overpowered. I believe it was the combined forces of that sole group that finally brought him down though. Summers is a good, level-headed guy according to the files the former Director left to me, and I trust his judgment explicitly.”

This time Bond looked up from the abilities sheet he’d been scanning for Alexander Legard, “I’ve been following them on the news. The mutant community seems to think a lot about them.”

“Which is exactly why I want them to get on board with the government… give them some support and funds. It works out for both of us. They get a bigger budget to work with and more public face to show that not all mutants are trying to destroy the human race. We get to show the mutant community that the government isn’t out to kill them, and we get a superhuman strike force, which we desperately need since we’re short most of the Avengers.”

Bond looked back down at the power chart, “This is quite an impressive power list. Letting them gain access to government buildings and sensitive information is a pretty risky move.” He cut his eyes back up toward Hodge, “If you really want to go through with this, you had better keep them on a short leash. They’ll be your responsibility.”

“With all due respect,” Cameron said, his voice filled with conviction, “How can we really stop them if they want to access our buildings or intelligence anyway? Reports of mutants with technokinetic abilities go back as far as ninety-six, and do you really expect locked doors and security clearance passes to hold back someone who can break the sound barrier on his feet?” He shook his head, “No sir… we need to start bringing them into our camp. We need mutants on our side before this war escelates.” He glanced between the two, “And it will. I guarantee it.”

The Chair and Vice Chair looked at each other for a few meaningful moments and then both looked back at Hodge. “Can we keep these, Director?”

“Please do,” Hodge waved dismissively at the files, “I made them for you to look over. I don’t expect you to make a decision right now, but this does need to move soon. We’re in no shape to ward off an army of mutants if Magneto decides to attack with one, and we have no idea if he has those kind of resources or not. And with Von Doom encroaching borders… we need more resources, and I believe Summers’ team is the best answer we have.”

Bond looked slightly skeptical as he kept glancing down at the powers list, but Feinstein looked sold, “Give us three weeks, Director. You’ll get your team.”
