Date: August 12th Time: Mid-morning Sitting inside the small kitchen, Shane finished making the large mocha, the large amount of whip cream requested balancing at the edge of the white ceramic cup. Seeing as it was a guest and even worse, that he was a Doctor doing an analysis on Shane himself, he naturally got the good cups out, leaving the chipped ones and Guido's handleless one (Shane had learnt the lesson from twelve broken mugs that Strong Guy was not good at delicate holding). Sprinkling a few shakes of the chocolate powder onto the top of the cup, Shane picked up another cup containing his latte and began to make his way to the small office that Dr Samson was sitting in. For some reason, Shane felt somewhat confused and anxious about the meeting. He had never had to do therapy before, well apart from physio back during his athletic days as a teenager. Pushing the door open with his elbow, Shane manuerved the saucers holding the cups onto the small table in what was normally Alex's office. "One Mocha with extra cream for you" he said with a warm smile on his face. The meetings were mandatory and even though Shane had never normally turned down meeting new people, especially if they were as easy on the eye as Samson. It was one of the conditions of the sponsership, that they all had to be assessed to be working for the goverment. Still, Shane was pretty confident that he would be fine, but he was worried for some others and their predicament. Pietro wouldn't seem like a likely candidate to sit all the way through an interview like this, he would probably wind up just irratated. Likewise with some of the X-Factor lot, there was many people with issues of varying degrees due to particular traumatic experiences in the last few months. Possesion, kidnap and even near-death for a few had cast a dark cloud over the normally happy, if stressed base. Shane guessed he was lucky to escape it only with a few burn scars around his wrists. Many hadn't escaped Apocalypses attacks, the gravestones tanamount to that. As he sat down across the table from Samson, Shane realised that he was flicking his nails, a nervous tic that he had. To stop this he sipped his latte and feeling the tasty drink tantalise themselves on his tastebuds, Shane decided to talk first. "So erm, I guess you want to ask me a few questions. Go ahead, Im sure you have a busy day so I don't want to keep you long" he smiled across at the green haired man, wondering if he dyed it that colour or whether it was a mutation just like Lorna's and Pietro's was. |

"Thank you," Samson said as he took the mug in one huge hand, delicate as was his habit since his strength had so dramatically been increased by the gamma radiation exposure. He took a sip and licked the foam off his lips, "Oh, excellent, Mr. Jones, exactly the right chocolate to coffee ratio." Shane took a seat opposite him and Samson set his mug down at the invitation to ask his questions. "Well, it's not exactly like that. I was given a list of questions by SHIELD, but honestly, Hodge, while well intentioned, doesn't have the people skills required for dealing with a team like yours. He sees you as soldiers and that's not the case, is it? You're... well, there's really no other term for it. You're superheroes, and as such there are different rules, different ways of doing things. We'll have to develop a relationship with SHIELD together, and that requires communication on our parts. I'm simply... a mediator, I suppose is a good word." Relaxing, and inviting Shane to do the same, he said, "I just want to know a little more about you, about your team mates. Nothing sinister, and nothing stressful. Or, if you prefer, you can tell me what you'd like to talk about. Maybe how you came to be here? Or how you feel about X-Factor, Havok, Mutant Town as a whole? I'm really just here to listen." |

As he sat listening to the man explain why he was there, Shane sipped the beverage generously, bigger gulps to help calm him down. He had never been one for interviews, in fact one of the brighter sides of coming to X-Factor was that he didn't really have an interview. In fact, he had almost stumbled onto the job. Although the fact that they were "superheroes" had a very good feel to it. Much better than being "mutie scum" anyday of the week. The connatations of the other name were much more grand but hell, Shanes team-mates had saved the world more times than he probably knew. Ok, most of the time he had been taken out of the game pretty early on but one day he would hopefully step up to the plate and show what he was made of. That would be if he wasn't having his butt kicked halfway to Texas. But he felt like he could talk to the green haired man. "Well, I am not going to go through the whole story of how I ended up here cause most of it is just window dressing but I had been offered a job at a new cafe, a small one here in Mutant Town as a short-order chef, you know just till I managed to find something a bit bigger and saved up a bit for the future. But when I got here, the entire road was a disaster area. It was just before that Sentinal programme got started and Bossman, I mean Havok, offered me a job here. I guess they were having a sort of recruitment surge cause of a few of us joined up around the same sort of time. Me and Jetters were literally like a week within each other. And this place, it is like a family." Shane paused for a moment, glancing at the man in the eyes. He did seem to be listening rather intently but Shane guessed that he was paid to do that. "I know that sounds cliche but we all look out for each other. I mean, we have been through a lot and I did go on leave for a bit after this really bad holiday, yeah the irony isn't lost on me, but X-Factor is just something that I believe in and I want to stick with, cause I think we are changing things for the better. It sounds a little naive, i know but still, if none of us didn't believe in this, we wouldn't sill be in buisness here." Shane monologued for a few minutes, occasionaly stopping to sip at his drink and look at the doctor. Sometimes it just felt good to talk. |

Shane was saying much the same as the others had been saying. This place wasn't a team as much as it was a family. They had a great love for each other, all of them, even those who might have difficulty with tender emotions. A unique dynamic, but one that was quite successful, it seemed. Samson nodded his hed and said, "Honestly, I think that's the best way to work things in a hazardous career such as this, but, and I hope you don't take offense, but you don't seem like a man who is looking for danger and intrigue. A family yes, but not a man I would expect to rush headlong into trouble. Not a coward, but not a daredevil either. How you came here or when is actually lot less interesting or important than why you came here? What drives you to be a hero?" He spread his arms, "This is a small potatoes superhuman team, let's not mince words. There's bigger fish to fry, and bigger pans to fry them in that Red Hook Brooklyn, no matter what clever nickname it's going by now. So, I suppose the question really is, Shane, why here? Why now? SHIELD is offering a great deal of benefits and perks, but you've been here in the mean times. If a family is what was most important to you, aren't there better places? Where you aren't nearly killed while vacationing on the beach?" |

While the doctors statement in response to Shane's speech threw him a little, he guessed that what the assessment was meant to be about. Getting into the members of X-Factor and seeing what made things click. But Shane wasn't entirely clear on why he was there himself. Sure there was reasons but none really seemed that concrete or a definite pin-point reason as to why he had stayed through all the bad times other than ones that didn't make sense outloud but they did to him inside his head. Shane found himself rarely with not a lot to say on the subject. Whilst he could make something up, he didn't feel like that would fly very well so he decided to tell the truth. "I just like to help people, I guess. Like when I was small and tried to be a doctor but then I found out that you had to be good at biology to do it and I failed that misreably in highschool. And then I started cooking and got trained as a chef but then I finally found here and its a good place. I get to help people using my abilities and not get judged for it. Maybe I just do it cause I like the good feeling that you get, or just to see someone go home happy at the end of the day or being just grateful that thanks to us, they can go home. Sure, maybe theres places that can be better and I would love to have a family properly, like a nice guy and something quiet to do as a job, but theres just things keeping me here that I don't want to give up for some quiet alternative. And yeah, the holiday, we almost all died. Seems to happen frequently for us now." he finished with a wry grin. Looking down at his cup, he realised that he hadn't been drinking much, the liquid still filling up two-thirds of the cup. He hadn't been talking that much, had he? |

Shane's wants and reasonings were simple, and that in and of itself was unusual here. Most of X-Factor's people had a much different reason. They had been hurt and wanted to stop others from hurting. They had done evil and needed to atone. They had no place to go and needed to be able to make a home for everyone. Shane just wanted to help, that's all. An admirable trait, for what appeared to be an admirable young man. "I understand perfectly, Shane," Samson said, "I, myself, had that same desire to help, to make a difference, but before my transformation, I was a scrawny sickly brain." He tapped a large finger against his muscular chest, "But in here, I was a superhero, in my heart. My accident with gamma radiation made my outsides reflect what was inside, and I am very lucky that unlike some of my less fortunate green skinned brethren that I didn't lose my intelligence. But the curious thing about gamma ray poisoning is that it manifests our secret self image. I was fairly well adjusted because I worked hard on understanding my self to do so, whereas some of the others who suffer from it did not. Interesting how the mind can so influence the way powers is presented." Sipping his coffee, he said, "What do you think? Does your self image reflect your powers? Let's look at your teammates. Havok, a man with a chaotic life and a fiery temper, causes massive blasts of heat and confusion. Polaris, a woman who's lost those nearest to her as a child, develops a magnetism that draws towards her. The Scarlet Witch using magic of an old gypsy flavor, Quicksilver running from his past and his future. Even the cloned Volt, his personality shock, his powers literally so. What about you, Shane? Did your mind shape your power, or was it vice versa?" |

Shane hoped that he wasn't the only person who found his psychological evaluation slightly weird in the fact that he was learning more about Samson and science than he seemed to be doing about himself, which he had guessed was what happened in psychological assessments. The mutant hadn't even knew that Samson wasn't a natural mutant, that he was the result of what was probably testing or an accident. But Shane had never thought about why powers worked out they way that they did. For him, he had guessed that the genes changed due to just flukes of nature, like why nobody looked exactly the same for being human. He had remembered someone explaining that all genes carried a tiny difference that altered everything about a person to make them unique, like fingerprints and he had always guessed the x-gene was the same. A large mixture of evolutionary ingredients mixed into a mutant shaped recipe, if you will. But then what did they say about him. Making a wall against things, a defensive shield? Shane didn't really see himself as an introvert or particularly anti-social, but maybe that's how he came across. Growing up, well, he did hide his sexuality as a secret but that wasn't big enough to make his powers change, was it? It hadn't bothered him much except he didn't want to be bullied for being different but after the entire school heard how you flew through the ceiling of the sports center, being gay wouldn't really change much. But flying on the other hand, Shane could see how he was connected to that. The joy that being in the air gave, his optimism and general enjoyment of life could be very well be a reason behind his manifestations of power. Maybe having a sunny outlook on life was enabling him to fly closer to the sun? It was a random idea, but hell, Shane had only just heard of the theory and the examples he gave mostly made sense. But with most things, he knew it would probably stem from early experiences. "Well when i was younger, i used to be shy and quieter. The only real time I ever truly felt happy was when I was doing sports. I used to be an potential athlete, i even made it to the state under-16s for high jump once, placed fourth! It just felt so good, that moment in the air, but the pain when you didn't do well, it was crushing. All competitive sports you put your all into do that, I guess. After my powers appeared, I jacked it all in, mainly cause I had an unfair advantage, what with being able to fly but for a while, I thought only being in the air high enough to reach that bar mattered. But when I found that being able to go way higher than any bar could beat you, it was just exhilarating. So I guess my personality could be the way it is beacuse of my powers, but my whole family is pretty easy going, so it could be just genetic as well" |

"And what is it you do with these powers, Shane?" Samson asked, "You can fly, and during the Apocalypse events you were seen rescuing people, attempting to, at the very least. It was very dramatic and drastic a time. After all of that, you remain upbeat? I Imagine a thing like that could crush your spirit, being right in the middle of things. Have there been any lingering effects of that trauma? Especially considering that most of the damage was caused by the man who leads your group, owns the roof over your head. I'm surprised how little concern there is about that, how forgiving you all are. You're rebuilding the town that Havok destroyed and the man himself is placed back in his position of power and authority. There's no anger towards him? No fear that he will revert to what he had been turned into?" Sipping his coffee, he looked casually around the room, the homey atmosphere of the common room, "What about the rest of the team? How do you feel about them? Your experience during the Apocalypse event, was it worse than theirs? Did you feel they pulled their weight during it or were you left to fight it alone? Have you discussed your experiences at all?" |

"Beacuse its just easier to keep smiling and going on than breaking down I guess. People have it way worse than me here and if I can't take it, whats that to say about them? Havok, Alix and Madison all got taken over, Jet has been through hell the last couple of months and no-body has escaped these past few months unscathed. So I need to keep being Shane, happy smilie Shane, just to keep a constant for myself and some others I guess as well. It was an awful time and I still have the scars. But thats in the past" Shane replied, rolling up his sleeves a little bit to just below the elbow. His lightly tanned white skin had faded yet visable finger marks around his fore-arm, where "War" had grasped him. If Lorna hadn't intervened, Shane probably wouldn't of had his arms or life yet. He had that to be thankful of. "Well to be honest and this better be spread around much if its not already known, but this isn't the first time that Alex has been somehow influenced. Back with all that Shadow-X buisness, he was influenced then as well. It was nowhere near as bad as this time, but I guess it could happen again. But it's Alex. I owe my life to everyone on this team and I don't turn my back on those when they are needed. Sometimes, I think that Alex needs the team and Lorna most of all. Of course I have my doubts about having him lead us again, maybe its too soon but he is well... Bossman. He is the only guy who could probably lead us well enough to make that difference" Shane spoke again, itching at his hand again, realising that he may be saying way more than he should be doing. But it was a good way to get it off his chest, relieve the little tensions in his head from life. Sometimes the best thing you needed to do is talk it out. "The worse thing is, I got out of it one of the luckiest. Most people had friends and family who died. Jamie actually did die a few times I think, you know with his dupes. We all did our bit, tried our hardest. Of course we have talked about it, well some of us, but some people just deal with things in their own way. I can't imagine having Pietro sit down and spill his heart out to someone or see Madison let himself show much emotion. And they are my team-mates. For better and for worse, I think we all are needed. We just fit together, if you get where I am coming from" |

"So, you're saying then that there are roles, here, at X-Factor," Samson said, "And each of you play a part. Havok is the leader, you're the ray of sunshine... where does that put everyone else? Who is Jeffries? Or Wanda? What do you think about having to be the cheerful one? You're scarred, Shane, not just emotionally, but physically," He indicated the burnmarks on his wrists, "And yet you aren't allowed to be angry? You aren't allowed to be down?" Shane admitted to doubts about Alex's return to leadership, and Samson said, "This town was nearly destroyed by Havok, but they don't know it. Do you think they have the right to know who they are placing their trust in? Or will it be more damaging if they knew? Where do we draw the line? Do we continue to cover up the dark parts of the world for them? For the innocent? Plaster a smile on our faces and hide our scars so the citizens beneath us can rest easily at night? Why us? Why must this burden be laid on us? Do you ever feel it's too hard? That it would be easier to just let things go, let someone else deal with it and rest, just take some time to rest?" |

"No I'm not saying that we are all playing a part like that, all designated and the such, but I just think we are all one bunch of cohesive cogs in the X-Factor machine. But I am a naturally happy person and yeah, I have my down times, everyone does but I don't want to inflict it on the others. Keeping my personal problems separate from my work mates is what I am doing, but I can deal with my issues fine by myself without involving the others in it. And its only some scars, I could of lost my arm. Always could of been worse" Shane stated, trying to clean up maybe a few misconceptions that he may have said. Trying to sound clearer in his points wasn't normally a problem but Shane was aware that he was being scrutinised under a spotlight and his faults or fears could be written down and used for ways that he didn't yet know or even understand. "Dr, don't go telling that whole story. If we told the public the truth behind everything that happened to us or that we did, then we would have a lot more work to deal with terrified amounts of people freaking out about what we had stopped. And how do you think the human/mutant relationship which is already frayed would work when the face of Mutant Towns protector turned out to have tried to kill half of this city? There was rumours going around of mutants going to camps and kept seperate from humans for everyones safety for God sake, questions of bringing back Aparthied for us. White lies are necessary to help people sleep safe at night. Sure its not the ideal way to work but its all for helping the people. Ignorance is bliss and all that. We need to keep quiet on somethings. And yes its hard, life is hard, but I want to be here. I want to do this, to help. When X-Factor isn't needed or I find something else that needs me more, then I can change. Till then, Im staying here, I'm not going to pass this off to someone else when I can do all my best to help my team-mates." |
