Time of Day: August 15th; morning. Place in Timeline: Almost two week after Enough rope to hang yourself. Violey stared at the boarding house which shadowed X-factor by two stories. Usually she would sit on the edge of the boarding house’s roof to think. This morning she waited on X-factor’s rooftop for a psychiatrist to evaluate her mentality. In the bubble of spring she was sure the rain forecasted later that day would not fall unless Wanda willed it. Everything was peaceful, beautiful, and controlled. It was a wonderful setting for her psyche to be checked over by a professional for the first time, in America. As she waited Violey felt apprehensive. It would have been easier if she knew beforehand how the session was going to play out. Her nerves would loosen up if only she knew how much information SHIELD had on her country. Even with the guarantee of doctor/patient confidentially a fear grew in which any information gathered on her country would be collected and handed over. The fear was misplaced but it didn’t change the fact she came to America from a virtually unknown, unnamed country. More often than not she was a morning person who loved spending the early hours clearing her mind for the day ahead. Today she ventured out on the roof an hour before the psychiatrist was to show. If it had been her she would have chosen the boarding house’s roof to talk but, even though she had the ability to create areas of silence, if the tenants saw a man with a clipboard interviewing a member of X-factor too many questions would be raised that she could not answer. Nonetheless, this tranquil spring air allowed her to relax some before Doc Samson arrived. Violey still had no idea what to expect from a conversion with him. As long as he kept the doctor/patient confidentially, then everything was going to be fine. |

Leonard Samson was not, in the strictest sense, a morning person. He liked the cool of the evening as opposed to the chill of the morning, not that there was much chill in a New York August. Like most New Yorkers, he didn't own a car, so he traveled by taxi. SHIELD had offered him a car, and he could drive, but the car he would have had to take to accommodate his size would have been ridiculously large and attention grabbing. They didn't want attention drawn to this venture. X-Factor was to be SHIELD's pet project, public and vocal in defense of all humankind-- mutant or not--- but it was their choice, the paperwork signed and agreed on by their leader. Not everyone was pleased, but it was what it was. And, at any rate there would be no good in showing up like a governmental stooge, even if he was one, so Samson arrived at this ungodly hour of "before noon" and headed upstairs to meet with Violey Vistagraph, one of the last members of X-Factor to be interviewed. She was a mystery, her file either mostly redacted or missing large sections of it. There were, like Mr. Legard, diplomatic issues at work here, and that meant he had to tread delicately. She wanted to meet on the roof, but oddly not in the bubble of spring that Wanda Maximoff had created there. Perhaps the aerokinetic found the false weather of the extra-dimensional pocket uncomfortable? An interesting theory, if he was a scientist he might want to test it. Violey was a beautiful girl, very exotic features gifted to her by her mutation. As a man who had has his own features altered, it was always struck him how varied the forms evolution took. He offered his hand to the girl as he approached, "Miss Vistagraph, it's nice to finally meet you. I'm Dr. Leonard Samson. Would you like to talk here, or should we find a seat? I promise this won't take long." |

Violey took the offered hand and shook it once before letting go. “Please, Violey,” she said preferring to be called by her first name for the session. “It is very much of a pleasure to finally meet you Doctor Samson, truly. For the last few days I ‘ave seen you around and, like Guido, you are rather easy not to miss.” If she had known such a morning hour would not be kind to the Doctor than she would have asked for an appointment later in the afternoon. He gave no indication of the early hour bothering him so she just smiled. By what she heard from the others Doc Samson was nice enough and his physical mutation was not a natural one. Knowing it might be rude she didn’t ask about her teammate’s sessions while she talked to them. If they wished to talk to her about the revelations they made then they would seek her out. Also, she was unsure whether asking about the Doctor’s unnatural mutation was rude or not. Again, if he wanted to tell her, he would. “A seat, yes in the spring air there are places for us to sit, if you wish,” Violey said waving her hand toward the bubble of spring air Wanda created awhile ago. Thankful for the promise she wasn’t worried about him taking up too much of her time. After all, was this not supposed to be a conversation? “To begin are you to ask a question or am I to start talking about any subject I wish?” Violey asked hoping he would not start the session off with a question about her country. “A direction to start would be most welcome,” she said. |

They wandered off into the bubble of spring, and found a convenient seat, enjoying the sudden relief from the summer heat even so early in the morning. She was a visually interesting looking young lady, her appearance odd, but not unattractive. He wondered how the markings fit in with her mutation as he had wondered about Lorna Dane's hair color, but while he could comment on Lorna's hair, having a similar shade, he thought perhaps it would be in poor taste to say something about it. Samson was a psychiatrist, which meant he was also a man who understood a little bit about how the mind worked. She may have evolved into a being who could manipulate the wind, but Violey was still a woman. Samson, who had gone toe to toe with villainry the likes of which most men would cower from, but he was not brave enough to point out the uniqueness of a woman's face. “To begin are you to ask a question or am I to start talking about any subject I wish?” Violey asked, “A direction to start would be most welcome,” "Well, if you have anything you wish to say, you can begin," Samson said, "I'm sure there are many things on your mind regarding your team mates, your team leader and whether or not he should be your leader still, SHIELD's involvement in this aspect of your lives. Or we could go a more personal route and you can tell me about your experiences as a mutant, how what you can do affects your life, how it feels to be hated and feared even as you're saving the world. You could tell me about Apocalypse and what you did during the dangers that came upon us. There's many things we can discuss today, Violey, it's up to you to decide where this conversation goes. I'm not recording you, and won't be verbatim reporting to the Director of SHIELD so anything you sat remains between just us." |

“It is as though you are taking a popularity poll by your asking whether our leader should stay leader or not,” replied Violey. When they reached the bubble of spring air she kept standing. “Havok is my leader and those of X-factor wish for our leader not change. I assure you if SHIELD removed ‘im from leadership they will not keep X-factor.” Alexander Summer’s team was the one she agreed to join. For almost two years she followed him to help those of Mutant Town when trouble came. During the ‘trial’ she may have suggested for Havok to be placed as figurehead she knew it would not happen. X-factor had become her family. They were loyal to him as well as each other. There existed times when a leader needed to take a break for their peace of mind. Not all leaders were the same. He had the support of the team, including hers. “SHIELD is a secret government organization. What can I say that is not an assumption?” Then she added after a short pause, “I do not like the pointing of guns at school children.” Violey had waited until the Doctor finished speaking before she chose which questions he asked to answer. When the string of questions switched to a more personal level she was relieved. X-factor was family. She didn’t feel right talking about family with a stranger. Nevertheless she expected the conversation to turn back to her teammates at one point. Family was always one of those subjects she tried to avoid speaking about. Not out of shame but loyalty. “I do not leave Mutant Town much,” she told Doc Samson, “Due to the markings on my face. I wish not to cover them up unless I really must. So, my experiences as a mutant are mainly at Mutant Town and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Before becoming a citizen of this country I would not be bothered by ‘ow I am viewed as a mutant in America.” She gave a half smile, “I like this town. Everyone is different and it is these differences which connect us. No one needs to conceal what they are. The same I found for Xavier’s. We are a community. It is them I try save even if the only thing I do is return a smile as I go down the street. X-factor is not trying to save the world.” At last Violey took a seat. She clasped her hands together. Her eyes focused on the ground between the Doctor and her. “In Mutant Town I was not when War came through ‘ere. At Xavier’s my abilities were a benefit to those who were in the infirmary that day.” |

“SHIELD is a secret government organization. What can I say that is not an assumption?” Then she added after a short pause, “I do not like the pointing of guns at school children.” Samson shrugged, "This is what humanity thinks your people are doing to their children. Do you know the statistics on how many times newly manifesting mutants cause mass destruction, the numbers of people who become collateral damage? Every last mutant, even those with the most basic of powers, can be considered a loaded weapon pointed straight at our children, since most mutants, according to studies, develop their powers when they're young teenagers. Imagine the families who have to be told their children are dead because the boy who sits in the back of the class suddenly burst into a cloud of toxic vapor. I've met some of those families, those parents demanding to know how this happened, why it happened? Mutants have it rough, but humanity doesn't understand yet, Miss Vistagraph, they simply don't understand, and sad as it may seem, you and your kind are going to have to teach them. So far, the only ones giving lessons are men like Magneto, and his Brotherhood." He leaned back and said, "You say you love this town, you love the people. You want to help. But why are you limiting yourself to Mutant Town. Why isn't X-Factor trying to save the world as a whole? Your leader has the power to destroy it, and he very nearly did. Why wouldn't those power be used to save the world instead? Don't you think it's a little selfish to deny your assistance simply because you don't feel comfortable being on a SHIELD payroll?" |

She looked away from the doctor. "I suppose you are right," said Violey. "Even I, if I wish to put my mind to it, can suck a room of the oxygen in the air. Never will I not do so but once my powers are known by humans I see the fear forming falsely in their heads. Thus the way of acting before a person's true character is known." What he said about the Brotherhood was true. The X-men were too private in their dealings between the human and mutant communities. They would rather not be in the media spotlight mostly due to protecting the children of the school. Only those of the Mutant Town/NYC area really knew of X-factor. Well, before Government sponsorship that is. A new voice for mutants would come through X-factor. A person could only hope the voice would be one of peaceful co-existence. "I limit myself to this town for I see Mutant Town as the only place I can truly belong," she answered barely masking her conviction. "Whether it is selfish or not, it is not of my concern." "Though the question you bring up does cause me to see a different view. One in where my powers can be of use in the saving of countless of others," she explained. The expression on Violey's face changed to a pensive one. Since confessing of her selfishness as not being a problem she began to look once more in the direction of Doctor Samson's face. "I see X-factor's community atmosphere becoming a benefit to more than this community. For myself I never saw nor wished to be the savior for anyone. Then a night two years ago with my actions I saved the life of someone who would 'ave died if I done nothing." For a moment she allowed silence to enter the conversation then she said, "I grew up only thinking about myself. Always worrying if my powers were found out or if my father cut my money supplies off. I see my joining of X-factor of being the correct course of action I 'ave taken thus far in my life. I do 'ope by being government I will begin to see the benefit of trying to save the world and giving all mutants another voice besides that of the Brotherhood's tyranny." |
