Time of day: About 4 PM Place in the time-line A month after Apoc; Saturday, May 23rd [before Mel discovers her powers] A month after Apocalypse, and it was still the first thing on everyone's tongue, the first thing on everyone's mind. The world almost ended. Seriously. Seriously! That kind of thing was just crazy, but there it was. And she just knew her older brother and sis were there, in the thick of it. While the rest of the Guthries weren't that much better. Right between Famine's blight and War's rampage. It was scary. On a map, it wasn't that far at all. If they, or something came... maybe she would have gotten some cool powers like ... like everyone in their family older than her. No, bad Mel, most likely everyone would have died here or mind controlled or whatever it was that had happened. Thinking of her older sibs, and their powers, led to thoughts of the school. Which was in New York. Which was so close to where War touched down. There was ... a hurricane. They had to be alright, right? She couldn't help but worry, though. They were x-men, like.. superheroes. They would have been out fighting the bad guys and they might've gotten hurt. Surely if they were the others would have helped 'em out, but still. She worried. And felt guilty for being a bit jealous that they had powers that they could go do all that cool stuff. All she could do during the Apocalypse was hope that it didn't come to Kentucky. So, yeah. Melody was a little preoccupied, which was why she kept on burning her fingers while making dinner. Liz usually did it, but the younger Guthries were being a nuisance and the older ones weren't helping out so... she did it. Hopefully it wouldn't turn out too bad, because they were damn well going to eat it after she burned her fingers making it for them. |

She smiled as she closed the door to her rental car. It was good to be home. It didn't look like much of any one was home. She figured ma was in town doing last second shopping. And the others were either working or playing in the fields. She walked through the grass kicking her shoes off a smile on her face. Felt good to have the grass between her toes. She rolled her jeans up a bit getting her self cozy. She paused in the grass a bit longer then moved to the door pushing it open slowly. Her eyes darted around the house. It was a bad habit she developed. She was scared to go anywhere without looking both ways. Clearing a room before she went in. She didn't get to fight. But she got to see the blood shed. She tried to help in the medical room as much as she could but she was no doctor. She got to see the aftermath of hell and all she wanted to do was go and fight. But the powers that be thought she wasn't ready. And she hated it. She could have protected some of them her powers made her nearly invincible and they left her to baby sit. Just like Ma and Pa. Why Sam got to go out and see the world. She sighed as she turned and saw Mel. She was trying hard to cook. But it was clear she had either not gotten the lessons yet or she just sucked at them. She stifled a giggle as she walked and stood in the door frame. “Ya know Mel. If you don't use so much cooking oil it's easier to cook and not burn yourself...yes you like it then keep going.” She said with a grin her hands lightly pressed into her back pockets. |

A familiar voice sounded behind her, as she cooked. The good news was... at least the food wasn't burning. So far it hadn't been rendered inedible. Definitely a plus. It took her a moment to realize who it was, and when she did, well, she almost dropped the stirring... thing. "Oh?" she replied to the teasing, glancing over her shoulder. "If you know so much, why don't you help me out?" There was a slight teasing tone in response, but.. it was mostly eclipsed by the 'Eeeiii Paige is here!!' mindset. In a completely different tone, she added quietly, "Missed yeh." If she wasn't the good responsible girl she was, she would have abandoned the food to its sad fate. She wanted to fling herself at her sis and hug her and ask her a zillion questions. It had been sooo long since they'd last talked. Was Sam alright, and was he being a complete dork - really, what was it like living at a school with their brother? Was she alright? Did the hurricane go through the school? Ohh, she wanted to visit, she really did, but ... school.. and work.. she couldn't even leave for a weekend, they'd probably use the excuse to fire her. As it was, she continued her attempts at cooking and gave her sister the eyes. You know those eyes. Wide, guileless, please-help-me, you-love-me-don't-you? Yeah, those ones. Of course Mel was a bit old for that, not to mention with the amount of siblings they had it was something that people could become immune to.. still. She knew Paige would help her out. If she wanted her food to taste like food, at least. |

Paige smiled as Melody gave her the face. In most houses the face only weakened one of the parents. Was the secret weapon to get your way with them. But Paige had spent a good chunk of her life helping keep track of the litter of kids so she had become rather weak to it. She gave her head a big of a shake and walked over to the stove. And gave Melody a small hip check out of the way. She took up the cooking sprinkling spices and moving things around in the pans. Cooking had become second nature for her in this house so she sunk right back into mother hen mode with very little trouble. After a few quick fixes she covered the pot up letting it cook it self and turned back a grin on her face. “See Mel easy as pie. So hows life been roun' here?” She moved towards the kitchen table and sat down at the table her arms folded on the top of it smiling. She was happy to be back and see her sister. She missed her and the rest of the litter. She stretched softly getting the jet lag out of her. She slept for most of the flight so was still a bit stiff from the most uncomfortable of positions she woke up in. She was sure Melody would have a billion and one questions so she figured at any moment the barrage would start. |

Mel gave a little giggle when her sister bounced her out of the way with her hip, and got out of the way... while watching what Paige did. Maybe next time she wouldn't make such a big mess of things. Still she wasn't sure where she went wrong in the first place. Things just got a little out of control. Usually if she was making something, there was someone around to make 'suggestions' while she cooked. Well, she was fifteen. It wasn't the end of the world that she couldn't cook well yet... at least she could boil water. "Yeah... easy as pie. Too bad Ah can't make pie, yet," Mel replied with a grin in response to the teasing, goodnaturedly. "Pretty... normal. Ah think Jay is sneakin' around with some girl.. Jeb is being Jeb.. The munchkins overactive and everywhere.. and Liz is doing everythin'," the girl said, wondering if she was leaving anything out. Oh, right. Herself. "Ah've gotten a job. Not too bad, just register. School isn't bad, though if Ah had awesome powers like you and Sam.." She wouldn't hesitate to hurtle after them to their school. She'd join them in a heartbeat. She didn't much care for the small town or the people in it. The stories she'd heard about the school made it sound like something of a haven. She was bound to be a mutant too, right? Right?? She watched Paige stretching. "Long trip?" she asked. "If you came here, things are okay back there? Sam's okay?" Melody pressed her lips closed on a flood of a questions for a moment, before asking, "What ... what happened? There was stuff on the news and things were wrong, but Ah don't.. Ah'm not sure if we've got the truth y'know?" Her blue eyes, so similar to her sisters', were distressed. She didn't trust the news, with their tilt against anything mutant related. |

She smiled. She felt a bit bad for Melody she was a bit younger but she was by far Paige's favourite of her sisters. Partly because Liz lacked work ethic in her eyes. She was the oldest and she should have been home helping out and cooking like Paige had to. And Paige felt a bit annoyed she spent all the time she spent teaching Liz only for it to be wasted. But she happy to know it was all going well. She missed them all. They sometimes got on her nerve but was better then the school she felt at times. Then Mel brought out the question she had been biting to ask from the start. Melody was a lot like she was when she was younger. Wanting powers so bad and still stuck with none yet. She smiled softly as she thought about how to answer her. “Sam is good. I don't see him all that match we have are own groups of friends at the school. But he made it to full time X-men he saved the world...well helped too...” She trailed off a little. She wanted to save the world but she was never given the chance. “So he is excited about that I would say. But yeah we are both good. I don't even know what was going on. I was stuck babysiting the younger students and helping with the wounded. So I missed all the action which totally sucks.” She sighed a bit. “From what I have seen the news even I'm confused. It was a mutant that caused it all. That I know. But other then that no clue. Just things looking bad on the TV. I don't think things are going to get an better for mutants. People are angry and confused...least I don't have to worry about any of you here having powers. Least not yet...” She eyes Melody scrunching her nose up as if looking for something on her. “Your about the right age though to sprout horns or something and make me get all worried about people getting mad and hurting you over stupid stuff.” She reached out to ruffle Melody's hair. As if she was checking for the horns. |

Truth was, she was worried that she was normal. That would be unbearable, with all her older sibs ending up with amazing powers. It would be cruel to have that hope, and wait for it to be her turn, year after year, until she realized that she wasn't special after all... She couldn't stay here forever. If she didn't get powers, she wasn't sure what she was going to do, but anything beat Kentucky. Well, it did in the mind of a fifteen year old girl. She understood not hanging out all the time with Sam. Brothers could be something of a pain to hang out with sometimes, protective was the word. She was still the baby sister, though she was fully capable of taking care of stuff. Well, at least if it wasn't involving super powers. Or cooking, for that matter. Mel grimaced when Paige mentioned having to stay behind with the kids. Oh, how she felt for her with that. "I'm sure they felt safe with you there," she said, though. "With most of them leaving the kids, the kids must have felt safer with someone tough like you with them." Paige was already upset that she didn't get to fight. There had to be some good to it, right? Melody frowned when Paige explained the situation. Even she didn't know.. was everything being hushed up? Things.. even worse for mutants? Her stomach tightened into a knot. Paige and Sam could take care of themselves.. and so could she. But... most of the people 'round where they lived. They knew the Guthries kept on turning out to be mutants. What if ... something was bound to happen, tempers being what they were in their family. With a sudden smile, her worries faded into the background. Paige teasingly checked her for horns. "Ah'm not gonna get horns. Ah'm gonna get wings, like Jay," she said with a laugh. Not that she thought that she would, but they were pretty. And when it came to joking around about powers, something like that seemed nice, unlike some powers which just seemed scary. "Ah'm sure." |

Paige smiled at her little sister. Who was trying valiantly to make her feel better about being the baby sister. And it made Paige feel a bit better. Melody pulled back saying she wasn't going to get horns but wings like Jay did. Paige chuckled and gave her an o really look. “You sure about that? I mean what makes you think your angelic enough for wings hmmm?” She grins at Mel. She knew it would bug Mel. But Paige has been with out her younger siblings for so long a little messing with them is not a bad thing Paige figured. “You sound like me Mel. All set for powers and to be the next big thing out the Guthrie farm.” She smiled half proud of her little sister and partly worried about her. Being home was sinking in how important mutant rights was. She had always been an outspoken activist about it. And worked hard in her political classes. She had dreams of being a Malcom X or a King Jr. for the mutant race. So she was well aware about the need. But seeing Mel so excited to be one just drove home the importance. She didn't want her sister to have to grow up in a world that hated her. She deserved to be loved and cherished for the amazing person she was. “Though I do hope you didn't try jumping off the bard like I did to see if you could fly...” she grimaced a bit at her stupidity in trying t figure out her powers. |

Melody threw her shoulders back, her chin up, and pursed her lips in a smirk. "Well, of course Ah'm angelic enough for wings. Ah mean, if Jay is, then Ah certainly am," she said, completely serious for a moment before grinning. Truth was, she adored her big brothers. They were awesome. Even if they could be goobers sometimes... it was cool. Her sibs teasing helped her develop a thick skin, and a mutant in their town really needed a thick skin. She could dish out as good as she got, and let it roll off her back without sweating it. She smiled a little at Paige saying she sounded like her. Then she realized what she meant as she went on, remembering the ridiculous and sometimes dangerous things Paige went through trying to discover her powers. Like jumping off the barn roof, or... "Don't think Ah'm telepathic, at least," she said wryly. Paige had spent some time trying to read their minds. It left her in giggles at the time. She got it now, though. She couldn't stand it if nothing happened. "Jumpin' off a roof, not so much. Maybe Ah'll try the porch," she added. No need to break a leg or sprain an ankle. Hospital bills were the last thing they needed. Still.. Mel sighed. There was a chance she wasn't a mutant. Maybe she needed to.. not get her hopes up so much. "How're you doin', sis?" she asked, changing the subject. She hadn't asked, and it had been a while. Major things had happened while they were apart. "Did ya meet the man of your dreams or anything?" she added, teasingly. A mutant of course, with equally awesome powers, and they would have cute little super-powered cuties. She started laughing at the image of a super hero family - but wasn't that what they were? And wow had her imagination run away with her. Paige would so tell her if she was serious enough with someone to even consider .. wouldn't she? |

Mel brought up all the crazy stuff she tried and looking back it was pretty funny. Paige couldn't help but let a small giggle out as she gave her little sister a big grin. “I bet we can find some apples out back and we can sit you down and let ya stare at them to see if you can make em explode.” She doubted Mel would fall for it but if she did it would be a bundle of laughs for her. Then she asked the question that Paige really didn't know how to answer she asked how she was doing. She wrestled with the question for a moment trying to figure out how she answer it. She knew Mel was safe to talk to. Out of all her sisters she was the only one who got what it was like even though she wasn't one. She kinda wished Mel would grow horns or breath ice or something. Then she would have someone to talk to fully. “Just confused I guess. I'm having a bit of a crisis of faith in the whole human mutant dream crap. I've seen a lot of bad on both sides and it worries me. And It just a mess. I guess I am having trouble seeing peace as an option after all the bad mutants have done and the humans to us. Ya know. Just kinda crappy all the way around. I want to be more outspoken and an activist for mutant rights. But the X-men are all shadow like.” She shrugs she was confused. Her life has been a cyclone. |

"Nah," Mel said, trying not to giggle. It'd be funny, fun, and just a little frustrating to try to figure out her powers. "It'll just come to me when the time is right. No need to force it.." she said with a somewhat serene smile. Either she had one and it would come, or she didn't and it would.. for now, she could focus on school, and let things happen as they would. Naturally. Not to mention, it would save on sprains and headaches... As Paige spoke, she just listened. Nodded, frowned, didn't speak until she was finished. It wasn't difficult to understand. She was a little scared sometimes, she knew that there were bad mutants. Just like there were bad humans. Sometimes she wondered if someone - human or mutant - would be able to figure out where 'Cannonball' and 'Husk' came from and get back at the family or something. That scared the heck out of her. She got both sides of the equation. Why some of them turned their back on the world. The world had turned its back on them. She usually tried to see both sides of arguments. She wasn't always good at it, but she tried. The human-mutant situation was just.. too big for her mind to encompass. How it could possibly get better. It would take centuries, left as is, possibly humans and mutants dividing into separate nations and fighting until only the stronger survived. Or, somehow, peace? It seemed like a much less bleak solution, but.. how? "Maybe they have to stay in the shadows, right now. Its a school, too.. Most of the 'X-Men' are still kids, right? Maybe.. or maybe Ah don't know. Not like Ah know their plans.." Maybe they were waiting for the next generation to grow up to make a move. Or maybe they were planning to breed out the humans. How the heck was she supposed to know? |
