Date: 19 Sept 2002; 8 Years ago (16 Years old) Place: Mio, Michigan Time: 4:00pm With a small creak the dark haired girl walked through the entrance of her home. Looking at her phone in disappointment and upset. She was nearly two hours late in getting home and unable to call home to let them know. Not only that but in detention they wouldn't let her use the phone. Tina James, Sophomore at Ausable High School, could practically feel the look that would come from her parents faces. The hazel eyed girl entered in the kitchen and saw her mother working on dinner. Quietly she spoke, "Hi mom. I'm home." Her mother turned around and folded her arms. Waiting for her daughter's explanation. "Sorry I'm late. My phone died and the school kept me after." Melinda James, lowered her arms and raised her brows. "And why did they keep you after school?" Ah, Tina was dreading this part. Earlier in the day the girl's history teacher was making racial remarks about mutants. No one was standing up for the race. Her own power not having been activated she didn't even know she was a mutant yet. She raised her hand and asked the teacher a question that in his opinion undermined his authority. After class she was sent to the principal. He asked her why she was being a disruptive influence to the class and when she explained herself and her side of the story the she finished with saying that she didn't think it appropriate for the history teacher to express his opinions about mutants in class. Although how she said so was probably not the best way, Tina asked him how he had felt about slavery. The principal being an African American himself was obviously not a fan the girl continued with telling him that because something in their genes that made him different from her was the same as what separated humans from mutants and felt that his slurs was not something she was a fan of hearing. As her punishment for being disruptive it resulted in only one day of detention as opposed to the whole week. Snapping out of the flashback as her mother spoke yet again, "Well?" Tina shrugged and said, "Teacher said something I didn't agree with. And I got in trouble." In short, she didn't want to talk about it. Melinda sighed and went back to cooking dinner, letting the incident go. The next day at school Tina approached her locker to find that someone had sprayed graffiti up and down the door. Words like 'Mutie Lover' and 'De-evolution' was tagged on the door. Skipping first period to go to the principal she let him know about the act of vandalism. Her complaint was met with empty words of getting the problem fixed. With the look on his face it was obvious he didn't care too much. After meeting with the principal a second time the hazel eyed girl picked up her cell phone to call her mother. Melinda could hear the upset in her daughter's voice and rushed over. After being picked up from school by her mom Tina told her everything that had happened. She was more upset at the school then her daughter. "Well your dad and I will just have to have a little chat with your principal. That is completely unacceptable." Tina simply shook her head and replied with, "Mom just let it go, I'll be okay." But the look on her face told the girl that it wasn't going to happen. Three Weeks Later War between humans and mutants was growing, and the subject of the matter was intensifying. Things on the home front wasn't looking up too much for the James' Nearly every day she would approach her locker with new graffiti and would leave school with it freshly painted over. Tina's parents were considering moving and fought about if they should or not. The hazel eyed girl would hear their arguments through the walls. It was getting to be just too much. Three Months Later. The solution wasn't really very simple, but it was the best they could come up with. The hazing had escalated to a point where Tina didn't even go to school. Her parents pulled her from school and they would work to getting a GED. It took a while but her father, Richard James, had managed to give Tina a chance to test. Upon passing the test needed to get a GED they celebrated. In the comfort of their home of course, word was spreading around like wild fire about Tina's rebellion. Sometime during that night Richard caught wind that his daughter didn't look too happy. "What's wrong kiddo?" Tina sighed and asked her father, "Are you disappointed in me?" He lowered his eye brows in surprised and responded with, "Why would you ask that, Tina?" She shrugged and replied, "Cause technically I'm a high school dropout. That opening my mouth pretty much lead me to getting a GED instead of a real diploma." He shook his head and smiled down at his daughter. "I could never. You stood up for what you believed in. And there is nothing wrong with getting a GED. I'm proud of you, kid." She smiled and left it at that. Two Months and Three Weeks Later Tina sat on the top of the stairs of her home listening to her parents argue. The argument was leaving town, yet again. Richard didn't want to, it was their home. Melinda wanted to, the hazing had spread to the whole family. While they argued they knew their daughter was listening and decided not to raise voices to each other. They had to come up with something. She could see them from where she sat, unfortunately they couldn't see her. All the stress, the hazing, it was all just getting to be too much. With all that in her head plus more Tina suddenly felt as though she couldn't move. She tried but when her hand would wriggle or raise to her eyes she started screaming out, but nothing came out of her mouth. The girls head screamed and cried out for her parents who were in plain view that she couldn't move or talk. She had no clue what was going on. She didn't know her eyes had turned red and soon her eye sight would be flooded with a strange red mist like cloud. Shortly after her parents' argument started to get more and more heated. They were really getting into the fight. Everything had happened so fast. It was almost un-real how quickly it went from shouting to eerie silence. Having been so angry Richard grabbed a knife from the kitchen. And once finished he clutched his hand to his heart and fell over. Tina sat on her spot on the stairs screaming and crying in her head, but staying so still on the stairs. Tina's parents were discovered the next day, she was not. Police officials didn't know what happened or why, but they labeled the James girl as a runaway and wanted for questioning. Their theory was during a heated argument the young girl got scared and ran away. They weren't too far from the truth. |

One Month Later. 30, April 2003 (17 Years old) South America; mutant rebellion sign in station. With a small duffel bag on her back, Tina stepped closer to the mutant rebellion sign in station. The men at the sign in station was hustling about getting things together and settled for new members in the rebellion. The hazel eyed girl looked at the mutant rebellion as they worked. Until one man stopped in his tracks and looked at the girl with the duffel bag and hair cut short. “You here to join the rebellion, kid?” She snapped her head to the man that was speaking to her and shook her head. “Well follow me.” He started walking off and she followed behind him. After a brief pause he looked over his shoulder and asked, “How old are you, kid?” Taking in a breath of air she responded, “Seventeen.” The man looked ahead and lead Tina to an office. He held his hand to motion for her to take a seat. Once in the office she took a seat while the man closed the door behind him and gathered up a few pieces of paper and a pen. As he shuffled and wrote on one of the papers. The girl sat and waited for him to say something, a question, or some sort of statement to let her know if she was just going to get hauled around only to be told to go home. Luckily he spoke up, “Name?” “Tina James” She looked at the paper he was scribbling on as he wrote her name down. “Power?” She didn't know how to properly label her power so she did the best with what she knew. “I make people angry.” He looked up at her and raised a brow, “Angry?” Tina stood up and walked to the window. “Yeah. That man... at the far end there.” She pointed to a man outside the office and the one writing down her information stood up to see who she was talking about. “I see him.” He sounded skeptical as he flickered his gaze back to the girl. Her eyes were red, his brows lowered in puzzlement. Looking back to the man she had pointed out he saw that he was getting agitated. He focused on his comrade getting angry until Tina lowered her head. “Sorry... that was a small dose. I could push it further but... I really don't want to.” She returned to her seat and the recruiting man (of sorts) returned to his. “That's... actually pretty impressive. That man's usually cool as a cucumber.” Her hazel eyes looked at the recruiter and replied, “Impressive and destructive.” He moved on to ask her, “Any family members we gotta worry about?” She took in a deep breath and responded, “No.” He looked back at her skeptically as said, “You sure? I don't want any parents coming in tellin me their kids' got no place in the war. No human parents at least but still I don't want to know about Daddy mutant with super strength bursting in to get his daughter back.” Tina exhaled and said, “None for you to worry about, sir. Promise.” The man went back to writing and scribbling on the paper. It wasn't long after the meeting with the recruiter that the hazel eyed girl was thrown in the field with the other rebels fighting along side her kin against human oppressors. There was a small squad of fifteen mutants was known for their sneak attacks. The dark haired girl was put in with the squad There was ranks but it was all unofficial, it was more of who took charge and lead the squads One Month Later Deep in the thick vegetation near the coast of northern Chile the small squad waited as the leaders tried to come up with a game plan. One rebellion grunt sighed as he took a swig from his canteen. The air was hot and humid. The grunt looked over to the hazel eyed girl as she stared at the leaders quietly arguing in the night. “Can ya hear em James?” Tina shook her head and replied, “Not really, Masters. Just bits and pieces. I think I heard Donaldson say we should just give a full frontal attack.” Masters groaned quietly and responded, “Our rep would be ruined.” She raised her brows and retorted, “Not to mention a lot of us would get killed.” He nodded and took another swig from his canteen. “Yes ma'am.” Tina leaned in forward while looking at the leaders intently and sighed Masters looked at her and smirked, “I know that look.” Flickering her gaze back at him she leaned back against a tree and spoke, “What look?” He gave a chuckle and continued, “You've been rollin with us for a month now, you and me get partnered up at every mission. You have the focusing look on your face. You get it when somethings on your mind. Care to share?” The hazel eyed girl looked back to the leaders and spoke, “I had an idea, but... I don't know...” He looked at her and waited for her to talk. She rolled her eyes and continued, “Well... we gotta take down these guys without any trace of us being here. I was thinking about maybe, possibly, going the powers route.” He looked at her genuinely intrigued. “What'd you have in mind?” She ran her fingers through her hair and spoke, “With my power, I could... well, drive them to kill each other.” “Really?” Tina nodded. “That's actually not a bad plan. Pitch it to the higher ups, James.” They sat in silence as the girl looked to the other squad grunts. “Alright... you forced me to do this.” Masters stood up and walked to the higher ups. Tina tried to grab onto him to stop him but it was too late. They exchanged inaudible whispers and shortly motioned for the girl to go to where they were. After talking with the leaders of the squad about her plan they decided to at least try it out, thinking that no harm could come from it if it didn't work. They were interested in what she did anyways, as Tina had never spoken about it before. Unarmed and unprotected she inched forward to the campsite they had fixed to attack. It was a really elaborate operation the humans were running. She was close enough, dangerously close. Staying low to the ground her hazel eyes turned red. It wasn't long until some of the men closest to her started to exchange words, none of which were pleasant. Letting her power at full force on every single body she saw they grew unnaturally angry. Tina kept on letting her power flow. Soon they were turning their weapons on each other. It was loud, full of shouting and gunfire. Until, just like what happened with her parents... silence. She pulled back from her powers and as soon as her eyes returned to normal she felt a hand on her shoulder. Looking up she saw it was Masters and said, “Damn James, you kicked ass. You're a little rage bringer.” The hazel eyed girl went to her knees and Masters helped her to stand up. Since then the entire squad took to calling the hazel eyed girl 'Rage'. |

Seven Months Three Weeks and Two Days Later (22, Jan 2004) "Winter in South America... ain't it grand?" There was definite sarcasm in Masters' voice that evening. As both him and 'Rage' lay low in the long thick vegetation waiting for their end of the mission to commence Tina answered his question with, "Shh. When we're done I'll buy you a snow cone, Champ." Rolling his eyes he shrugged off her reply. It was all that the both of them could do instead of losing their minds from boredom. After the hazel eyed girl had first used her power she had moved up in ranks. The higher ups were listening more and more to what she had to say. Bringing Masters along with her every step of the way the two found themselves moving up in the ranks. He was a friend to her, a good one that stood side by side with the girl from the very start of her enlistment into the Rebellion. Their firearms at the ready for expecting danger that may or may not occur. "We should just break out the cards now they'll find what we're out here for and we won't even have fired a shot. This is a James Bond solo op. They didn't need the whole team for this crap." He whispered to Tina once again. Before she could shush him again they heard gunfire within the building. Her attention snapped to the gunfire. One by one they received communication from the unit's telepath that each group that went in was coming out. Tina bite her lip and tongue as the messages were being delivered. It was painful as hell to have telepaths go into her head. She was still unable to figure out why and aspirin didn't get rid of the pain completely it did help some. Once the last group was out they got word that the enemy was coming out. That was were the Rage bringer and Masters with his force field came in. They opened fired on the enemy until a full tactical retreat was made. On their way back to regroup the girls' hazel eyes caught something. Being cautious as they approached they saw it was their second in command of the unit, badly injured. Both Masters and James picked up their fallen fellow troop and headed back. Once they caught up with the rest of the unit they tried to treat their second in command as best they could, unfortunately he had died from too much blood loss. Two days later. (24, Jan 2004) The unit was required the few days of rest. Their first time back at their base and it was because of a death within the unit. The unit was relaxing in a break room waiting their next orders from their unit commander. It took hours for him to come into the break room to let them know what new person was coming into the unit. As soon as he came in Tina was the first to spot him. “Room attention!” Each and every member snapped straight but just as easily as they did the commander was quick to respond, “Relax guys. Take a seat.” It didn't take long for everyone to get back to being comfortable, and as soon as they did the unit leader continued. “Alright. I know since Hammerson's death all of you have been upset, sad, concerned, and wondering what new schmuck is taking his place. We're all too tight knit and this new guy that comes in will be a know it all. Well I've talked it over with some higher ups and it's been decided. We're gonna promote someone withing the unit. Then we'll recruit a new member to the unit just like we did with everybody else.” He paused for a moment to gaze at everyone else's reactions. Taking a particular gaze at Tina James she kept the same reaction until she noticed he was staring at her longer then normal, that was when she lowered her eyebrows. “Now it took quiet some discussion but I believe we got just the person for the job. James, you're the new second in command of the unit. Congratulations.” The hazel eyed girl could feel and see almost everyone's eye on her. Even Masters who had also swatted her, really hard, on the back for a silent congrats to his unit buddy. The commander continued, “I've requested for us to have an extra day off. Tomorrow you guys can sleep in and relax, then we'll hit it road. But... for tonight, celebrate.” The unit commander then left the room to let the unit react without his eyes looking at them. Staying out of sight but just within hearing distance. Tina sat in the quiet break room with the others. Nervous and a tad uncomfortable. Until the members around her started to cheer on and congratulate her. It took a moment for her to soak in the new level of responsibility that was bestowed on her. But when it did, she had felt a tidal wave of emotions. From fear to excitement. It was hard to stay on a consistent emotion. |

Three weeks, six days, and three months (20, May 2005) After all the missions the unit had done together with Tina as their second in command, this mission should be a piece of cake. Half of the unit was to wait to act as back up and cover while the other half would infiltrate a base manned by humans and gather up information. The unit waited at their safe point for night to fall. They kept quiet and low so attention wouldn't be attracted. Tina was instructed to stay behind while their commander went to check out the enemies' status. Suddenly bangs were heard in the distance. All eyes were on the unit's second in command. James took a quick glance at Masters and took a careful peak over the barrier that shielded them. The number of bangs heard in the distance had increased, and grew louder. Her breathing quickened until suddenly their commander stumbled in from the side. Groaning, blood covered his back and torso. Everyone else in the unit was quick to take defensive positions while she caught the unit commander. “James, our Intel was wrong. They saw us coming. Safe spots... compromised. Fall back...” Things went from bad to worse from there on. The gunfire around them caused some within their unit to fall. Snapping her head around she shouted, taking charge of the unit, “Fall back!” Surviving members of the unit heard the command and started to run to a point of safety. It was all they could do, but with the bombardment or gunfire and flame the remaining unit didn't get too far before they were pinned down. There was something large and heavy that was able to take on gunfire. It was perfect for cover spot. The unit ducked behind as the bullets flew and zipped past their heads. As Rage took proper cover she saw that they had lost a majority of their unit. Three were still able to walk Masters, herself, and Clark the newest member of their unit, the remaining seven weren't ambulatory. The three took fire against the enemy and managed to hold off the first wave of enemy attack. The enemy held off on their fire. As they did, Tina went to check on the injured. They needed help, they needed proper back up. Looking to the third person that managed to get away unscathed she whispered to him, “Clark, you need to retreat and get us back up, these guys won't make it and we can't move them. Go west, and you'll hit a road. Don't let the enemy see you but we've always got friendlies driving on that road. If you go north along the road you'll eventually hit a rebellion station.” He nodded to her order and ran off. Masters took position and James continued checking on the injured unit members. After ten minutes a pop was heard and shortly after a light blue colored cloud followed. The enemy had deployed a gas, one of which the humans had been working on for a while now. “Oh fuck... James, they're using the gas.” She cursed and instructed him to throw up his shield. Moving to him first she was quick to put his mask on his head. Enemy fire blared again but thanks to Masters' mutant ability the bullets didn't hit anyone. The gas the enemy was using wasn't deadly but hindering. It acted like CS gas did. The same sort of gas used at riots, but this gas had other qualities to it. Such as a chemical agent within the gas that rendered victims weak. It was something easily cured with pure oxygen into the lungs. It was a good enough weapon for those caught without their masks. Rage quickly moved to the injured members to put their masks on. The gas moved forward to their position. Once she reach the last injured member she couldn't find his mask. All she had was instinctive thinking so she removed her own mask and placed it on the last injured man. As the gas rolled over them Masters' muffled speech was hard to hear whatever it was he had to say and shouted, “Fire!” Masters lowered his shield and both began to fire their weapons, and Tina started to cough. The gas was taking it's effect. Her eyes, lungs and skin burned, she could barely keep her eyes open from the sting. Masters kept shooting as Rage ducked down unable to stop coughing. Collapsing to the ground as she kept coughing the weakening effect was quickly working through her system. Her eyes welded over with tears from the gas, and it was getting harder to breathe properly. |

Minor border skirmishes. When the day was done, and the blood had log dried up and been washed away, thats what they'd call this. Historians would explain that they weren't that pivotal to the formation of Jus Soli. Perhaps, one day, when Jus Soli became whatever it was going to become, the Grand Genetic Empire of Mutatis or whatever, they would forget entirely the happenings of today. But that day had not yet came, and by God, if the future generations weren't going to remember this, then Colonel Hollis was going to make sure that every last rotting human in this jungle was going to remember. Colonel Hollis and his Javelinas were the closest to an elite unit that you were going to find in the Army of Jus Soli. In these rough and rumble days, when Jus Soli existed more in concept than in reality, things were dirtier, lines more blurred. Colonel Hollis didn't know it, but today was the start of the campaign that would get him his general-ship. The Javelina March, the beginnings of the push-back, would keep Jus Soli school children out of class for generations, but the starts of the soon-to-be-legend, a rescue operation on a pinned down unit, were anything but glorious. Two Chevrolet pick-up trucks, that's what the Javelinas were operating out of. Tanks were a little outside the budget at the moment. Colonel Hollis had designed and implemented a few low-cost modifications to the twin black Colorados. The Javelinas, with a mixture of bullets and energy blasts, mowed down the South Americans. Flash, then bang. Strobe, a redhead from New Mexico, provided the flash, a blinding light as part of her powers. Colonel Hollis would end up losing her by the end of the March. The Bang was the rest of the unit. It took 6.4 seconds from the flash for the Bang to level the South Americans. "Black diamonds, people" Col. Hollis hollered, an unit term, something that Private Suggs had said. Weapons were lowered, and the energy blasters kept a lid on it. "This is Colonel Buford Hollis from Jus Soli High Command," He hollered, "Your position is clear." |

To Masters, the flash and bang took no time at all. To James she felt every burning second. Hearing the Colonel through his mask telling them that their position was clear. Thank god. Still coughing, trying so hard to hold it back. She was unsure as to what to do, but taking a course of action that seemed to pop into her mind first and foremost. She checked on the injured members of her fallen unit. The first one she checked on was the soldier that she had given her mask to. Feeling for a pulse, rather then making sure she was taken care of. Feeling as though the remaining members of her unit were ahead of her needs, she was the second in command but now, she just didn’t know. It was difficult to tell, was it the massive hit her unit took or the adrenalin rush of the battle. Either way members of her unit had died, and while she was within the unit they were family. A grunt, military family who trudged a country with far too much humidity which comprised of mutants and had a chain of command, but it was a family none the less. One where a majority of them had been wiped out with bad Intel. It was a bad situation, upon a shitty disposition. If that was even the thing she was thinking about. At that moment all she could think about was the burning in her lungs and skin, and the dead and dying members of her unit. Choking on the clean air that she needed to breath, it would take a little while longer for the chemicals in the gas to clear out, without pure oxygen running through her lungs the gas would take longer to clear out. Saluting to the Colonel in an open area would be dangerous. Never knowing who was watching and not giving the enemy a chance to take out important members of the rebellion. After taking a moment to check on the injured James stood up and in front of the Colonel. “Lieutenant James, sir.” Failing to hold back another fit of coughs, she turned her head so she wouldn't have coughed on the Colonel. “Of the Copperheads.” |

JP between Hollis and James It was shit like this that made it hard for Buford to negotiate with the human establishment later on. Hard to accept the honeyed words of "Peace in our time" from the same faces that were the ones using chemical agents on your brothers in the days and weeks and the years that preceded it. Of course, his brothers were why he did it. Any of the temporary truces that the Jus Soli Government had to take were necessary ones. Too many lives were lost, too much blood had been spilt. Peace meant that it was time to beat their swords into ploughshares, and get to work of actually governing a country. "Copperheads, help has been radio'd in. Help's on the way," Buford said to the Lieutenant. After getting out a small, short, cough yet again she spoke, “Thank you, sir.” James turned her head to let out the remainder of her cough. As her feet lead her to the others that were down but still alive she waited for the extra help to arrive. “It was lucky you found us in time, sir.” Maybe if they weren't blind sighted, and taken down so quickly, they would have had a shot. But that narking paranoid feeling kept wandering back to the thought that it was all a trap. Tina's coughing kept at it as she looked after the wounded and as Masters kept his guard up by keeping a watchful eye out from where the attack first originated. The colonel couldn't help but notice the skittishness of the able-bodied Copperheads. Not that it wasn't understandable, since they were just recently under attack. Chemical agents in the middle of a battlefield? Were the S'Mericans crazy or just bloodthirsty? Buford figured the second. "Ryall," the colonel barked, "Use your powers, see if there's anything active in the zone." He turned and faced the still-coughing Copperheads. "If the area's clear, the Javelinas are going to head out. You're not the only unit that's been pinned down." The Hollis counter-offensive was the start of the turning point for this war. If they were alone, at least in Ryall's sensory zone, the med unit would be here quick enough to save their lives. Probably, they'd just stabilize the wounded until the ambulance drivers could get the Copperheads back to Camp Anya. Hollis had a reputation for having a heart of ice. It was just simply how he viewed the world. Soldiers were cogs in a machine, and that's what Hollis understood. Machines, not people. He inspected the remaining Copperheads as he waited for Ryall's report. He was careful not to get to close. "Nothing closer than 30 miles, sir," Ryall said, "And they're heading in the wrong direction." Hollis nodded, and turned to James. "Lieutenant, med-units will be here shortly. My Javelinas need to get rolling. I've got a war to win." Tina shot a look to Masters, he knew what sort of look that she was giving. Between the two she was always the one to want to hop in and volunteer. “Sir, I would like to request permission to join in with the unit. Masters is capable of waiting for the med units.” Holding back a cough she paused for a moment. “All I would need is another mask.” She was still able to go in and fight, she knew she was. The injured would be left in good hands with her long time unit mate. All that would be at the end of the day for her is sitting in a room breathing in pure oxygen and becoming ansy. "Permission... Granted." |
