Superheated Plasma Blasts

August 1998 Day The ferry was filled with men, and women, but no children. Alexander Summers, at the age of fifteen, was the youngest on board, and he was not supposed to be here, but someone had pulled strings to get him permission to visit his brother, the first time he will have seen Scott since his first arrest three years ago, when he learned that his brother was a criminal, a mutant and a murderer. He didn't believe that last one, though the rest was proven true. Alex thought to himself that if Scotty had killed someone, that he did it because it was to save his life, and he was young enough, and biased enough to figure that was justified. He was dressed in suit, sent over to be fitted by an 'associate' of his brother's, and, while he wondered how Scotty got people to do these things for him, he had to admit that he did like this lifestyle. It was easy, it was possible to believe that they deserved it because they were better than normal people, and Alex, who had gotten by all these years by trying to be what other people wanted him to be, was feeling pretty good about being told that what he was was better than any of them. Standing at the rail of the ferry, Alex looked out at the Raft as they approached it. A floating fortress, surrounded by barbed wire and concrete and the cold cold ocean. That was where his brother was, for almost a year, locked in there. He'd been living in an apartment in the rich part of the city, with anything he wanted, and his brother was in a cell with rats and bread and water and people probably hurting him all the time. Alex narrowed his blue eyes in determination, and clenched his fist on the metal rail, which began to glow red as he poured his power into it with the heat of his overactive imagination. "Hey!" a voice came, and he quickly pulled his powers into the 'almost control' that he had worked so hard to achieve. A guard was walking towards him. Alex moved away from the rail quickly, leaving the chill of the sea air to cool the heated metal. "Yes, sir?" he asked, co-operating completely, so that no one would suspect he was here to do a very bad thing. "Can I see your visitor badge, kid?" the guard asked, holding out his hand. "No one under eighteen is supposed to be..." He looked at the laminate card that Alex handed over and said, "Ah, I see, you're Ruby's brother. Ok, then." "I didn't know I had to be eighteen," Alex frowned, "Are they not going to let me see Scott?" The guard smirked, "Kid, two things. One, he don't like to be called Scott. He broke three of Gargan's ribs for calling him that. He likes to be called Ruby, Ruby Red if your formal. Two, you ain't got any idea who your brother is, do you? He's got the whole Raft wrapped around his finger. Got a way about him. Makes people listen." He looked down at the young teenager. "If he wasn't a criminal, he might be a helluva a leader. You got half his skill, you might want to use it for something better than robbing banks, and breaking and entering. You might be president." He winked and moved on. Alex frowned, turning back to the rail to watch the ferry dock. That guy didn't know anything. Scott may be doing bad things, but he was only doing them to humans, who would do bad things to them because they had powers. He didn't know Scott at all. But Alex did. Alex knew he was a good guy, deep down within. |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

Dr. Leonard Samson watched his patient stand at the window watching the approaching ferry. "You're excited," he said, calmly, taking note of the younger man's tapping foot. Prisoner number 091-963, Summers Scott Christopher, AKA Ruby Red Summers, didn't usually show his emotions like this, not ones that in common convention were considered 'good.' Excitement, pleasure, happiness... those tended to be stifled under a mask of disaffected survival, bolstered by liberal demonstrations of 'power' emotions like anger, greed and dominance. But, this was clearly an example of Ruby, as he insisted on being called, excited and eager for what was on that ferry... or rather, who. "Ruby, come take your seat. The Ferry still has some time before docking, and we should get this out of the way in time to process your visitor's permission." Ruby was twenty-one now, having reached his full height of 6'3" though he was still very thin, not scrawny, but lanky might be the apropos word. He leaned heavily on his cane, a slender wooden affair, topped with what appeared to be a carved red glass orb. This was not standard Raft issue. But, in his year here, Ruby had proven not to be the standard Raft prisoner. He had an ability to coax, connive and cajole his way into positions of power and leadership, all the while following the rules without making it obvious he was only following the rules that pleased him to follow. A natural tactician, a natural criminal. He took his seat opposite Samson, his long legs stretched in front of him, one hand dropping naturally to massage his bad knee. Take away the orange prison jumpsuit, he could have been a college student trapped in a boring math class, wanting to go out into the sun and play frisbee or whatever kids were playing these days. "Sorry, Doc," he said, "I'm just having trouble concentrating." "You're brother signed in according to the roster they radio'ed over," Samson said, "I checked on that before coming to see you. I thought you'd want to know." Ruby smiled, though it was a fleeting expression, "I knew he'd be here on the first day," he said, "Alex is a good kid." "He's a young kid," Samson said, "Too young to really be allowed on Visitor's day. How did you manage that?" This time Ruby's smile was slightly longer. He didn't want Samson to know he was happy to see 'Lexy, but he didn't mind showing him he was smug about what he had done to get past the rules. He spread his hands and said, "I'm just a model prisoner, Doc. Perks for good behavior, I guess." "Or you paid off the right guard to put his name on the list" "Now, Doc, tell me what Alex, at fifteen, can't handle, that he could as an adult," Ruby said, "Kid's smart, he's resourceful, he's my brother, only family I have. I have the right to see him." "Some might say you gave up your rights when you broke the law," Samson said. Ruby snorted, "Some might say I gave up my rights when my eyes decided to become deadly weapons. Wasn't my fault." "That doesn't justify what you're here for though, does it?" Samson asked, "What does Alex feel about having his brother here?" "In prison?" Ruby shrugged, "Kid knows what I do for a living." "You consider this a job?" "I consider it survival, Doc," Ruby said, leaning back in his chair, "Most important lesson I ever learned from my parents was survival. Learned it when they threw me and my kindergarten aged brother out of a plane to save our lives. Look, I'm an uneducated orphan who can't look a person in the eye without killing them, you tell me what I'm supposed to do here." "And, that's the lesson you want to teach the brother who clearly idolizes you, if everything you've told me about him is true," Samson asked, "You want to tell Alex that it's ok to rob banks, burglarize business office and extort anyone who has money to fill your coffers?" Ruby was silent for a moment, his brown eyes narrowing into slits, one hand coming to the null cuff on the other wrist. "My brother's got options I didn't. Alex can be a better man than I am. That's what I want to tell him. I want him to see this place so he knows how to avoid it." He sat up straight, "I know what you think of when you look at me, Samson, I know what everyone thinks. They look at me and see a freak, a villain, a criminal. Alex is the only one who sees something else. I want to see my brother because if someone had told me where this path was going to end up, I might've taken another one. I want to stop him before he goes this way." Samson looked at Ruby and said, "All right, I'm approving your visitation pass. I'll call down to the docks and make sure your brother is allowed to see you. I'm not convinced you're telling me the truth entirely, but I do believe that your brother might have a positive effect on you. Let's talk after his visit, ok?" The prisoner rose, offering his hand to the prison appointed therapist. "I appreciate it, Doc. I think you're right though. Alex's visit is going to help me make a major break through." Or rather a break out, Ruby thought as he left the room. Not everything he'd told Samson was the truth, but not everything was a lie either. He was going to help Alex on his way to being something more than his brother was. But he was going to do it from outside these walls. As he headed back to his cell, Ruby looked around for Raven in her guard disguise, a smirk crossing his face. It was up to her to meet with Alex and get this show on the road. |

Today was finally the day. It had been a long ride. In many ways, Raven had been as much a prisoner on this ship as anyone else. While she had slightly more freedom than the prisoners, the she was still stranded after her failed attempt to liberate her friend. After his death, she thought that she was going to have no hope after she got off the Raft. However, fate had provided a twist that she had not seen coming. Ruby Red. The man held her thoughts at almost all times since she had first saw him. What was it about him? She couldn't place her finger on it. A host of things, probably. He held everyone captive just by entering the room. Lucky for her, she was able to be more than just another acquaintance. Officer Ramona Reyes moved out of her quarters and walked towards the main observation deck. This was an area that was off limits to the prisoners. From this view, she could look out and see what was around the massive ship. Usually it was nothing but water. Today, off in the horizon, was land. Reyes smiled at the sight just as she was poked in the back by her friend, Officer Sanders. He was a six-foot-eight black man who looked like he had played college football at some point. He was one of the few friends, outside of Ruby, that she had made among the guards. Sanders was a great guy really. "Hey shorty. That's a beautiful sight, isn't it?" Sanders asked as he came up beside her and looked towards the landmass ahead. "You don't even know. I can't wait to get back to my mami's home cooking. I've missed it since I've been here," Ramona said, turning her head to look up to Sanders. She elbowed him lightly in jest as she gleamed up to him. "You?" "Nah sweety, I am staying on for another run. I don't have much of a life out there and the money is too good to leave it behind. I have to say that I'll miss drinking coffee with you every night before shift," Sanders said, reaching out and squeezing the hispanic woman's shoulder. Ramona put an arm around his waist and gave him a one armed hug, touching her cheek to his shoulder briefly in a friendly gesture. "Yea, I'll miss that too. I guess not everything on this ship was that bad. Look, what are you doing during the visitation?" "Uhh, I think Henry put me down as a rover among the prisoners and their families. Just to make sure things don't get out of hand. I think Bob and Scott are going to be down there with me too," Sanders said, returning the hug in the process. He then took a step away from her and looked at her questioningly. "How about you let me take that spot? I'm stuck down in cell block A with the prisoners who aren't having any visitors," Ramona replied. "Naw, you know how boring that will be? It will be great to get out and get some fresh air," Sanders said, shaking his head. It was obvious that he didn't like that one bit. "Aw, c'mon now papi," Ramona said, stepping into him again. She reached down with one hand and placed it on his buttocks, squeezing it one time before running her hand up to the small of his back. "There must be something that can be done so I can get that spot." Ramona winked at him in a mischievous way that he had not seen her do before. Sanders continued to look at her questioningly before it slowly sank in. "Oh... well... if you want it that much..." Hours later.... It wasn't always pretty doing what had to be done. But the simple fact of the matter was that if their little plan was to work out the way that they wanted it to, Raven would have to be with the prisoners and their families during visitation and not stuck down in a cell block. She had always liked Sanders, and really she didn't mind giving him that one parting gift. Not only that, but she could have very likely saved his life in the process. Some things Ruby just didn't need to know about. The ship was in the process of docking at the prisoners were being assembled to see their families. For the most part, they were quite orderly, knowing this was the one time of year that they would get to see their loved ones. Ramona was standing on the visitation deck. It was a large deck with quite a few cheap picnic tables scattered about. Usually it wasn't this clean because it was the area that prisoners were allowed to go outside. Today, it was set up for the families. Guards who were usually not so nice to the prisoners were on their best behavior. Pretty much, it was a completely different prison for the moment than what the prisoners (and the guards) were used to. Time to put on a show. |
