Punches from the Punch Dimension

November 2006 Six months after the formation of Jus Soli New York could get very cold in November, and that played hell with Ruby Red Summers's bad knee. He was not even thirty, so limping around the suite he and his growing gang called their home, put him in a foul mood. A man like Ruby was on his good days not pleasant to be around. On his bad days, he was almost deadly. Usually he migrated for the winter, at least he had before the Culling, before the war. He was a wealthy man, why should he have to suffer? But it was getting harder and harder for mutants to travel these days. Seems like if you left, there was a chance you might not get to come back. So, he stayed at home, downing painkillers like candy, and snapping at everyone who came in eyeshot. He rarely took jobs in winter, again, he had no need to. He had no need to continue to do jobs at all, really, but he did them because he liked them. Or so he told himself. Ruby lounged on the couch, reading the newspaper, his knee propped on a pillow. There was nothing but misery in it. More forced "immigration" of X-positive citizens to that South American reservation they were calling a country. He was furious over the whole Jus Soli stuff, and it bothered him no end that his brother was not only drinking the Kool-Aid, but helping to ladle it out. They had no idea, not one of them had any idea what the hell they were doing. Idealistic fools. How long was it going to take before they were wiped out? Ruby had no doubt in his mind that they would indeed be wiped out. After all, if you gathered the sum total of your enemies in one relatively small area, could you resist the temptation to slaughter them wholly? Yeah, Ruby couldn't see it either. Fucking idiots. He lifted his glasses for just a second and shredded the newspaper in a fit of anger. Sitting up, he winced as a bolt of pain went through his knee, and he growled low under his breath, cursing every person, mutant or flatscan who had ever crossed his path. He up ended his scotch, never minding that he had taken several pain killers already, that it was not even noon yet. He stretched out the offending limb, and thought once again how nice amputation would be, or at the very least some mild healing factor. There was a knock on the door, and Ruby narrowed his eyes. Who the fuck was coming up here without being announced? "Beta! Lorelei!" He shouted. God damn it, where was everyone? He grabbed his cane and pulled himself to his feet. As he approached the door, he retrieved a small stun gun, The Talon capable of 80,000 volts. There was no way he could fire his eyes or his regular gun here in this building. But fry any attackers and drag them into the safe privacy of you warm home? He threw open the door, and instead of an intruder, he saw a scarecrow of a figure, dressed in the uniform of Jus Soli. Ruby dropped his gun and looked at the harried young man, surprised as hell to find him here. "Alex?" he gasped, "Come in, come in, holy shit, boy what are you doing here?" |

Beta was in one of the far corners of the suite. Ruby had taken to the larger main area and was still feeling rather sour. The multiplying mutant was going to give the boss his space. If the boss wanted time to himself to relax, that is what the boss got. If the boss wanted one of Beta's clones to run out for a rueben sandwich, that is what the boss got. At that time, though, the boss seemed content to read the paper, watch television, jerk off, whatever. That meant that James had some time to himself. When he had time to himself, it was preferably spent in the company of some fine young woman. Beta could live through proxy for those kinds of deeds but that wasn't his style. He'd rather live that life himself, instead of vicariously through the memories absorbed from some clone. When Beta wasn't looking after the missions that Ruby had set him to he was doing things for himself; trying to find some way to make his life better, richer. If only Beta had been so lucky to be enjoying the company of a fine young woman at that moment. He didn't bring women around the boss very often. That was a security hazard. Anywhere down the line, the girl could get picked up by the cops and questioned. Any information they could give about Ruby was too much information. James couldn't let that happen. He had a pretty sweet deal going on actually. At that moment he was in the back bathroom looking at himself in the mirror. The mutant was stripped down to the waist looking at his muscles. He pulled his fist closer to face to squeeze his bicep as large as it would go. Beta gave a grin. "Well...hello ladies," he practiced in front of the mirror. He'd never say something like that. That was some kind of stupid joke or something. From the front of the suite, Ruby yelled out for Lorelei and Ruby. The boss sounded more annoyed than anything but Beta knew it was a good idea to head there as quickly as he could. He jerked his shirt from the tank of the toilet and began to button it up as quickly as he could. By the time James had his shirt buttoned back, Ruby had already limped over to the door and opened it. Ruby's brother was standing in the open door frame. Beta wasn't sure what to say. He knew the brothers might have something to talk about that might not include an extra set of ears. He was going to make sure anyway, "You yelled?" |

Alex hurried in at his brother's insistence and entered the penthouse as his brother's right hand man, James "Beta" Madrox emerged and asked what was going on. "Oh, hey, Beta," he greeted, "I'm glad you're here, I got some stuff I want to talk to you all about. Lorelei, too, if she's around." He was unsteady on his feet, obviously exhausted and strangely glassy eyed, like he was drunk, but Alex didn't drink, and as far as Ruby knew, he didn't do drugs. There was something else in his gaze... ... fervor. Ruby wasn't so sure he liked that look in his little brother eyes. "Sit down before you fall down, 'Lexy," he urged, "Beta, get my brother something to drink. You man up and take some scotch yet, Kid, or you still a teetotaler." "A coke's fine," Alex said, waving a gloved hand impatiently. He didn't sit down, instead pacing a little, as he began to talk, "Ruby, you don't know what we're doing down there... in Jus Soli. Magnus is making us a home, a real home, where people like us can walk down the street without fear. Jesus, it's something, Big Brother." "It's a reservation, 'Lexy,' Ruby snorted, "You think you're getting some kind of Utopia? Just wait until they start sending in the blankets with the small pox. You're all going to be wiped out." "Impossible," Alex said, "We're working out an agreement with the US government. Magnus offered me a position in the cabinet, an Ambassador to the other countries, to bring our people home, all of our people. You included, Ruby. Magnus thinks he can have you and your people extradited to JS and pardoned for everything." Ruby stared at him, "Hold up, there, what? You mean if we head out to your happy little dog pound in the jungle, that all our criminal records would be wiped clean?" "We'd have to clear it with Shield, but yeah," Alex said, his voice high and excited. His eyes flicked to Beta, "You'd never be able to come back to the US, but there's no need. We're making it a real country, a real place. You can finally stop living like this." Waving his hand around the lush penthouse, Ruby said, "What, you mean, in the lap of luxury? Yeah, doesn't sound like something I'm interested in. What do you think about this idea, Beta? You willing to give this all up for a hovel in a third world country for the chance to skip down the street, arm in arm with half a dozen dupes?" |

Alex, the little brother. Heh. Beta wondered what he wanted. Probably trying to get Ruby to change his ways and walk the mutant straight and narrow. Put more effort into the mutant cause. Whatever the spiel was, the multiplying mutant was pretty confident that Ruby wasn’t up for having anything that his little brother was selling. Alex gave a small acknowledgement to Beta. “Hey Alex, how’s it hangin?” he asked. He gave a quick look to Ruby and then back to Alex, “Sure, I’m all ears, buddyro.” Beta knew that turn of phrase got on some people’s nerves but he didn’t care. Sometimes he felt like pushing buttons. Ruby offered his brother a drink, as if he’d take any booze, but it didn’t hurt to offer. Alex asked for a coke. “Sure thing,” he said and walked over to the bar like a good go-fer. Regular hotel rooms had a mini bar but this suite they inhabited had the full works. He dropped three ice cubes into one crystal tumbler and poured in two fingers of scotch. He filled another tumbler with ice and filled it with cola. James walked back over and handed the scotch to his boss and the soda to the younger brother. Beta heard the entire conversation between them. Alex wanted them to join him in Jus Soli. What Ruby said made sense though. The humans could wipe out their mutant problem in one fell swoop. Just nuke the entire mutant race and be done with it. Ruby asked Beta what he thought about it. Would Beta want to have the freedom to have all of his dupes running around all at once? “Sorry, Alex. We’ve got it great right here. I don’t have to want anything. Plus, why would I want more dupes running around to live my life, when I can do it myself. To quote a wise man, Homey don’t play that.” he replied. |

Wolf Form

It had been an unusually eventful year for the young wolf-woman. She had settled into a routine over time, of being left alone and being alone. So utterly completely alone. A wolf is a pack animal by nature, and for one to be rejected by both her human ancestry and wolf ancestry for being neither and both at the same time was crushing, devastating. Then came the war, a war which she had no part in, no knowledge of, but became a victim of nonetheless. She had been detected by a SHIELD troupe, and assumed to be a mutant soldier. As such, she was confronted, told to surrender. She didn't understand the words completely. They were vaguely familiar, but to her feral mind, they were just sounds. And they were sharp and they were blunt and they were threatening, so she reacted as any cornered wild animal would when faced with a threat - she fought back. She managed to kill one soldier and critically injure two others, but in the end, she was tranquilized, tagged, and taken away. She spent some time in SHIELD observation back in the states, as the technicians were unsure of what to make of her. Some were certain that she was the mutant soldier they thought she was, and was just being tight-lipped and uncooperative. Others correctly guessed at her true nature. She was tossed into a prison cell regardless. But once that prison was destroyed by mutant fighters and its prisoners set free, the wolf woman was left behind, deemed not valuable to the cause due to her feral nature. She couldn't be reasoned with, she couldn't be approached without being lashed out at, so she was abandoned. And so she was alone again, left to scavenge the ruins of a prison to survive. It wasn't until two months after her incarceration, in July, when someone came along to liberate her. He hadn't come specifically for her, was merely looking for whatever valuables had been left in the compound after the fighting was done. But he found her nevertheless. He was different from the others - he spoke in soft, calm tones, and made no threatening gestures. Plus, he offered food, good food, not the leftover drivel that was rotting in the ruins. And so, reluctantly, she followed him home. For a while, she was treated as a pet, or rather a guard dog, but after some time, it became clear that there was potential for civilization to take root in her mind, as she would watch the others talking, performing basic tasks and whatnot, and attempted to emulate them. She had, on occasion, raided Ruby's wardrobe and clumsily dressed in an old t-shirt and gym shorts. It was a difficult and slow process, but she was learning to speak, and learning to be a person. She entered into the room cautiously upon catching the scent of the intruder, very wary of this new person on her territory. She watched him with eyes that told him that she'd hurt him if he proved to be a threat. "... don't... play... that," she growled, unsure of what the words meant entirely, but saying them nonetheless. |

Beta brought over the drinks, parroting what Ruby wanted him to say, and Alex rolled his eyes, setting the drink aside untouched, out of frustration, "Are you fucking kidding me, Ruby? Are you really going to be stubborn about this?" His brother sipped his drink, noticing it was made exactly the way he liked it, Beta well versed now in how his boss liked his drinks. "Stubborn's your word for it, Inferno. Me? I like to call it being a patriot. I was born American, I'm going to die American, whether or not they want me here." "Jesus Christ," Alex snapped, "What the fuck does it matter?" "It matters to me!" Ruby snarled, right back, "I'll be god damned if I am going to let some monkey drive me out of my home!" "... don't... play... that," growled a voice at the door. Startled, Alex turned to see what appeared to be a... well, he would have said wolfman if this wasn't reality, and if she wasn't definitely wasn't a man. She was small, young, and from her general manner, she was mostly feral. "Holy shit," he whispered. Ruby turned to look at Rahne and said, "Hey, Rainydays, settle down, girl, this here's my kid brother, the idealist. Alex, this is Rahne, that's about all we could get out of her. We figure its her name, but she's got some kind of accent with what little she says so it's hard to tell sometimes. We found her on one of our scavenger hunts. She was a mess, fucking humans left her to die or something. She's ok here with us though, aren't you, Rahney?" He reached out and scratched the girl's head, something crossed between a fatherly hair ruffle and an owner's pet on a favored watch dog. Alex stared at his brother wide eyed. He flicked his gaze over to Beta and said, "You found her? What and you brought her home like a stray dog? You people are totally out of your minds. She needs help, clearly. This is exactly what Jus Soli is supposed to stop, what we're trying to stop. Kids like this shouldn't be suffering because of humanity." "My thoughts, exactly," Ruby said, tipping back the rest of his scotch, and tossing a couple more painkillers after it, "Which is why I took her in, and I resent, by the way, Baby Brother, you calling her a stray dog. Rahne's one of my kids, just like Beta. I take care of my own, but I'm going to do it on my terms, humankind be damned." Lowering his head, Alex said, "You always think you know best, Ruby, you always think your way is the only way. You sent me to that fucking school to make something of myself, and now that I have, now that I have a position of some measure of responsibility, now that I have some kind of power behind me, you're telling me that everything I became trying to be what you wanted me to be is nothing. You have to trust me, Scotty, if not for me than for your people. Don't you know that the Thunderbolts are going to come down here and start cleaning house? If you aren't leaving on your own, then they're going to start considering us as enemies on their territory." Turning to his brother's lackeys, he said, "Beta, you have to see the sense in what I'm saying right? You have to know what's good for you, what's good for this girl." |

Beta sat nearby. He didn’t expect Alex to make a move against his brother, Ruby, but he wanted to be ready. It was his job as the Number Two. Beta was to help with making sure Ruby was safe and well satisfied. He tried not to think of it as being a go-fer, being paid handsomely helped with that. Beta and his clones had some important jobs besides that. He was also part of the misdirection. There was a small army of clones out there making “appearances”. Beta was much more than a go-fer. Wolfsbane came along and joined them. She was still skittish of the larger crowds. She remained on the edge of the trio. She growled Beta’s last words at the intruder. The she-wolf barely spoke and they were lucky to get a word out of her. She was definitely damaged goods. Ruby gave her a nice little head scratch, it was a bit comical to see the Bossman treating her like a good little pup. The conversation between the brothers was getting really harsh. Alex didn’t like the fact that they took in Wolfsbane. He said that she needed help, help that she could get in Jus Soli. It became clear to Beta that the conversation was quickly devolving into another sibling rivalry squabble. That’s what it seemed to always come down to with these two. Though, Beta sometimes wondered what it would be like to have a brother instead of a bunch of copies. Alex then turned his sales pitch to the safety of Ruby’s gang. He said that the Thunderbolts would hammer down on them if they kept up their thieving ways. Alex tried to appeal to Beta since he wasn’t having the desired effect on his brother. “If we go to Jus Soli, things aren’t going to be any different for us there. This is how we live. Jus Soli is going to have police just the same as the outside world, man. Knowing what we are, Jus Soli isn’t just going to let us run around free range. Your little commune sounds like a gilded cage to me,” Beta said with a shrug. |

Rahne smiled contentedly as Ruby patted her on the head. She liked his approval, liked his attention. She was still at that point where she was partly canine and partly person, and would most likely be that way to some degree for her entire life, regardless of how well she would be civilized. "I... Dee... List?" she asked, regarding Alex with suspicion and wariness. She didn't understand much of what Ruby told her, but she was trying. "Is bad man?" Her tone became growling, threatening, making it clear that if "idealist" meant "bad man", she would hurt Alex and hurt him very badly. Like a proper canine, Rahne was very territorial, very defensive. Any intruder was regarded as a potential threat, and would be treated as one until proven otherwise. She did not take her eyes off of Alex, did not relax the scowl on her face. She caught a few words from the exchange, but more the tone, the exchange between the brothers growing heated and upset. And she didn't like it when people made her Ruby upset. "Go... Away," she growled at Alex, both an order and a threat. |

“If we go to Jus Soli, things aren’t going to be any different for us there. This is how we live. Jus Soli is going to have police just the same as the outside world, man. Knowing what we are, Jus Soli isn’t just going to let us run around free range. Your little commune sounds like a gilded cage to me,” Beta said and Alex almost blew his top. "You don't have to keep living like this, Jesus, Beta," Alex cried out in frustration, "You're fucking rich! How much more money do you need? Do you know what your money can get you in Jus Soli? You can live real lives. Real lives without worrying about being arrested when you step out to get your newspaper. Do you like this? Do you like knowing you're nothing but thugs and criminals?!" Alex's tone was upsetting Rahne. "Go... Away," she growled at Alex, both an order and a threat. Ruby kept his hand on Rahne's shoulder, "Down, girl," he ordered, "Remember what I told you about control. You're not an animal, you don't have to act like one." He got to his feet, leaning on his cane, "Alex, I suggest you tone it back. She's doing better but she's not tame yet and I don't believe in leashes." Taking a step back and several deep breaths, Alex held up his hands, "I don't like this, Ruby, I've never liked it." "You didn't seem to mind what I was when you blasted me out of the Raft, little brother," Ruby said, stepping towards him, "I seem to remember a fourteen year old pretty pissed off I wasn't letting him hook up with my gang, making him go to school and make something of himself." "But you knew better, wanted better for me." Alex reminded, "You know that what you're doing is wrong...." "Wrong for you," Ruby snapped, "For you. People like you, you believe the best in people, want the best, shit rainbows and find pots of gold at the end of it. Me? Beta, Lorelei? We aren't those people. We can't be those people. We don't fit in to this little Utopia you're building. We belong with the rest of the filthy, the corrupt. You have hope, Alex, I could see it in you, even as a little kid. I have no hope, kid, no dream. Lost that a long time ago. I'm just trying to live, and give these kids here a way to live as well. But we can't live your way... we can only live ours." |

Wolfsbane was bristling at Alex. She could sense that maybe he wasn’t to be entirely trusted or possibly that something was amiss with his offer. She enjoyed being petted by Ruby but his younger brother was something of a stranger and her animal instincts were telling her that there was a threat underneath his offer. Madrox had heard that dogs had a good sense about people. Well, she wasn’t a dog, per se, more of a wolf but they all boiled down to the same canine family. She bared her teeth at Alex and growled “Go…Away.” The fact that she had a smaller vocabulary added weight to her words. Alex rebutted James’ argument. He was offering them a chance to join their merry little colony where they would be accepted and embraced. Yeah, Ruby’s gang was rich but they were still criminals. At least in the outside world the cops only had bullets instead of mind-frying telepathy. Anywhere they went, criminals wouldn’t be accepted. They were the scum of the earth. Ruby called down Rahne, helping her to calm herself with gentle words. He rose and stepped closer to his brother. More heart to heart stuff. Ruby reminded Alex that Inferno wanted to be part of the Ruby gang once before but wasn’t allowed because he knew better. He had a future. Beta and the others, they didn’t have shit. Beta was just scrabbling at trying to make a name for himself when Ruby came along. Sure, Ruby also threatened Beta’s physical well-being but working for him was better than the alternative. “It’s true,” I was just a kid fresh off the farm trying to make it big. I didn’t have any goals other than to make a quick buck and name. I don’t think any of us would fit in with your Kumbaya Camp.” |

"Hrrmm," Rahne grumbled, visibly easing off, but still tense, still irate, still ready to pounce if Alex so much as made a cross look. She wasn't sure what was upsetting about him, but if he was upsetting to Ruby, then he was upsetting to Rahne. Ruby would be able to feel the tenseness of her muscles through his hand on her shoulder. She held herself back, but only for his benefit. She understood little about what Ruby and Beta meant, about how they were in the place they deserved to be in, how they wouldn't fit in at Jus Soli, or any of that. What mattered was that this was home. She gathered that the Eye Deal List wanted to take them out of their home, but she didn't know to where or for what reason. She really didn't even understand the criminality of the gang's activities. She rarely ventured outside, and never without Ruby. There were pretty shiny things involved in the gang's actions, but she didn't know what they were or their ghastly origins. Just that they were pretty and shiny. She looked back to Ruby for a brief glance, to gauge his mood, and then fixed her gaze clearly on Alex. Ruby may have wanted her to relax, and she would hold herself back for him, but that didn't mean she'd let the man who wanted to take them all away. She didn't want to be taken away. Not again. Never again. "No taking away, no more taking away," she growled, looking visibly upset at the thought. She had never mentioned being taken away before, but considering where she was found, it wouldn't take too big a leap of logic to figure out what she meant. |

"Jesus, Ruby," Alex muttered, "You got them brainwashed, convinced that your way is the only way. How many more are you planning on gathering? How big is your gang going to have to get before you get everyone killed?" Ruby smirked, turning away from his brother, dismissively, "No one's getting killed and no one is going away." He scratched Rahney's head, "You're staying here, with me. I'm taking care of you, ok?" He tilted her face up, by tucking the sphere that topped his cane under her chin, "Rahney, trust me, ok? No going away ever again. Alex isn't going to take you. He's not going to take any of us." "Ruby..." Alex protested. His brother straightened, not looking at the younger man, "You want to make me a liar, in front of my friends, Baby Brother?" Alex closed his eyes, realizing he wasn't going to be able to do this, that his brother wasn't going to take his help. "I love you, Scott, you're all I have," he said, quietly. Ruby turned now, looking at the youthful soldier, "I'm sorry about that, 'Lex, I really am. I'm not the brother you need. I can't be Scott for you." He clapped Alex on the cheek, lightly, "You go do what you have to do, Boy, you go be the little hero for our people." Lowering his head, Alex said, "I want to be a hero for you. I want you to be happy and safe." "I'm rich, and powerful," Ruby told him, spreading his hands to indicate the lavishness of the suite, "How can I not be happy?" Alex looked at him grimly, "I think you believe that. I really think you believe you're happy this way. It's bullshit though, you know. You're scared." The older mutant's joking manner suddenly stopped, and he said, "You might want to shut your mouth before you get yourself in too deep, Alex." Realizing he had at last gotten Ruby's attention, Alex stepped in close, "You're pissed off because you know it's true. You're scared to do what's right, because it's hard. It tests you, and you hate tests. You don't like to lose your control." "I'm about to lose it now," Ruby said tightly. Alex smiled, and it was almost a cruel smile, "You also hate to be called on your bullshit, don't you. That's what you don't like about what Magnus is offering us. You know that going to Jus Soli is going to be hard, and we are going to have to fight. It's so much easier to take and take without earning. It's easy to be a criminal, and you always take the easy way out. That's what Jack taught you. To take advantage, of people, of your powers, of their powers. You're a user, Scott, that's all, just a user. You hate me because you made me better than you are, and that's just not allowed, is it? No one is allowed to be better than you." Ruby swung his cane and cracked his brother across the temple, sending the soldier slammed backwards into the wall. "You arrogant piece of shit," he snapped, "Everything I have done was for you. To get the money to put you through school, to make you something, yeah, maybe even better than me. But you don't know shit about me. All this time you were off making yourself something to save me, did you ever fucking consider asking me if I wanted to be saved? I'm happy where I am. This is my life, and I live it on my terms." "And when Marvel comes along, you'll end up on the short end of a Thunderbolt noose! Whose terms will you live on then?" Alex snapped, putting his hand to his head and finding it coming away red. The heat in the room suddenly shot up as his powers came within a finger's reach. Ruby raised the again, and this time Alex's hand shot up, catching it. "I think it is time you leave, Baby Brother. I think your utopia needs their great champion of good." Alex glared at him, for a second and then shoved down on the cane, releasing it. "Don't call me when they pick you and your gang of losers up, Ruby. I'll be too busy saving people who want it." He turned and slammed out of the suite, leaving the door knob smoking with the heat he had been holding back. Ruby turned, and it was very lucky he had his glasses on or Beta and Rahne would be blasted through the back wall of the suite. "What the hell are you two standing around for?" He limped his way to the bar and tossed a couple more pain killers into a couple more shots. "Don't you have some place better to be than looking at me all the time," he grumbled. |

Rahne The Amazing Wolf-Girl was growing more and more agitated with Alex’s presence. She didn’t want to get taken away. She didn’t want to leave Ruby. He had found her and rescued her. What was it called? Imprinting? She had bonded with her savior and didn’t want to part from his side. The younger brother was still protesting, trying his best for Big Bubbie to see his side of things. He wanted to be taken seriously. That’s was Beta gathered from the situation. Sure, he was extending the invitation to a so-called safe haven but there was a lot more to the whole ordeal. Heh, Beta should be a detective or some shit. Then the proverbial shit hit the proverbial fan. Alex called Ruby scared. First, Inferno just wanted his brother to be happy. Fuck, they were rich. Beta hated it when rich people said they could be surrounded by people and be the loneliest person on earth. That was bullshit. Money can’t buy happiness but you can sure as hell rent it. Whatever. Alex kept poking and prodding his older brother. Ruby wasn’t going to be disrespected in front of his friends, his followers. Beta wasn’t sure if he should step in or what. This was a brother’s quarrel. He was pretty sure that Ruby wanted to take care of his little brother and not seem to be a weakling in front of his crew. The argument escalated quickly and then the ensuing fight ended just as abruptly. James winced as Alex slammed the door behind him. It was a very awkward moment. Beta was running through his head whether or not he should have done something. "Don't you have some place better to be than looking at me all the time," he grumbled from the bar after having slammed a few pills down his throat. Beta felt his face grow red. He turned his face away and stomped his foot twice to produce two clones. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a roll of cash. He counted out some bills and handed half to each clone. “We’ve got money in our pockets already,” one said. It was more of a show on Beta’s part. He was in charge. He commanded the clones. He pulled back his hand to offer a backhanded slap to the Mouthy Dupe but refrained from it. “I want you to go get some pizzas. I want you to go find the prettiest, cleanest trim in the city.” The clones hurried out to fulfill their orders. “Boss, you feel like some pizza and poonanny?” |

Ruby's voice, reassuring her that she was going to be okay, started to calm Rahne down some, and it seemed like it was all over. The Eye Deal List showed signs of defeat and he was going to leave them alone. She was sure of it. Her Ruby had won, and now they weren't going to be bothered. But then the Eye Deal List said something... something that made Ruby change completely. Things were escalating again, and Rahne couldn't understand why. Ruby had won, hadn't he? Why was it starting again? Was the Eye Deal List getting his second wind? Was he going to kick into high gear and beat Ruby at the word fight and take them all away anyway? She didn't want to go away. Not again. As he left, Rahne was left even more confused. The doorknob was melty and Ruby seemed upset, angry even. She flinched visibly as Ruby grumbled at her and Beta, her reaction almost as if Ruby had moved to physically strike her instead of just speaking. She wasn't used to this from him. From the bad men who came to take her away, yes, but not from Ruby. Was he going to hit her and hurt her and cage her up like they did? Beta sent his other selves off to do something that Rahne wasn't sure of, but it was clear to her that Beta was afraid as well. She cautiously backed away, watching Ruby and trying to make sense of what had just happened, trying to understand why Ruby was so upset at her. What had she done? And more importantly, what was he going to do? |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

As usual, Beta's way of soothing his boss's volatile temper was with foolishness, well meaning and casual, and as usual it soothed Ruby enough that he was able to regain control of his emotions. He was quick to anger, but he appreciated his people's attempts to cater to that. Pouring another drink, and taking it to the couch so that he could rest his throbbing leg, Ruby smiled and said, "Pizza yes, the other thing, well, you remember the last time you brought one of your rent-a-babes home for me, Lorelei stabbed her in the thigh. She gets... possessive." He lay back on the couch, propping his bad leg up, and smiling in the memory. It was really rather sweet how she got around him, sometimes. He waved a hand at the dupes and said, "You know how I like my pizza." He closed his eyes, "Leave me alone until it gets here though. My brother's spoiled my good mood," he said, bitterly, self mocking since his mood had been fairly foul before Alex's scene. His eyes opened, as the dupes hurried away and he looked over at Rahne, realizing by her posture that he'd frightened her. She was so very much like a dog at sometimes, easily cowed, tail between her legs. Ruby sighed, and sat up, wincing as he shifted his leg, "Rahney, c'mere," he said, patting the couch beside him. "Let's have a little talk about what happened here." He frowned, wondering what he was going to be able to say to her, to calm her down, and explain to her about the complex relationship he had with his brother, and the often uncontrollable angers he had with himself. "Beta, help me out here," he ordered, "Tell her that everything's going to be ok." |
