Reptilian physical differences

- A forked, flat tongue. - Long pointed claws.
- A Jacobson's Organ, which allows reptiles to taste the air to add to their sense of smell.
- Scales have formed under his current layer of skin, but the flesh has yet to slough off to reveal them.

Toxins

Toxins are biologically produced poisons. Dustin’s body naturally forms various kinds of toxins. These most often are secreted from his skin, with much worse effect through his saliva. He does not have control as of yet how much he will dose someone with, or what toxin. The dosage and strength of his toxins are strengthened through negative emotions, such as anger and fear.

Normally, if he’s in a moderately good mood, just brushing against his skin will make someone queasy but not ill depending on their resistance.

The worst of his toxins is his venomous nails. They’re a mix of hemotoxic and neurotoxic venom, the first of which “effects the blood and organs, causing a breakdown or inflammation in the body”, the second of which “effect the nervous system, leading to everything from seizures to death.”

His toxins can and do affect him when he first develops them, though he quickly builds up a resistance to each form of toxin his body creates. As mentioned before, his body builds up resistance to his toxins. This can happen with others who are exposed to small doses on a regular basis. Since he develops new toxins from time to time, someone must continue to be exposed to his toxins on a regular basis or their immunity would not be up to date.

Anesthesia

His canines secrete an anesthesia. It is strong enough to knock someone out if they get enough, and certainly enough to numb the pain of his toxins. The anesthesia isn’t a bad thing in itself but since his saliva contains a high concentration of toxins its a deadly kind of mercy.

Heat sensors

Much like snakes, he can sense heat. It is strong enough that he can tell a target's general size, shape, and location if not a great deal more than that.

WEAKNESS:

Ranged weapons or powers would be quite effective in taking him down. Contact is necessary with his power, or somehow getting the toxins or venom into contact with his adversary. He cannot control how much of a substance he secretes.

His body is affected by his own toxins (not the venom), though he can and does build up an immunity to them within a day or two. Until he builds an immunity to a new toxin, he is very unwell and vulnerable. His powers are still effective, he's just sick. This happens regularly, but not often (say twice a year at most) and if the changes in the toxins are minor he is not badly affected.

Other people can build up immunities, and immunities to other forms of toxins or venom might allow for a lesser reaction to his toxins. Also, venom might be collected to create an anti-venom. He cannot touch others without harming them unless they have an immunity to his powers.

His feral nature has been repressed until recently, and he has little experience in dealing with it.

PERSONALITY

Dustin is an unhappy young man.

He got involved in things bigger than him, and has been overwhelmed. All he can do is keep his head down, take his orders, and do what he must. He doesn't trust his own judgement, emotionally or intellectually. It never seems to come out right. Following orders was better. He doubted. He had misgivings. But he doubted himself more than anyone else, and he was completely devoted to the one he followed. Not necessarily the leaders, but those who had been directly involved in his initiation.

He doesn't approve of the change of leadership or the changes within the Brotherhood that brought about, but doesn't feel like he has to like them either. He hadn't been extremely dedicated to the previous leadership either, it was the cause he was invested in. He had some confidence that the previous leadership had been invested in the cause. He's not so certain about that with Exodus. While he feels he lacks the ability to make the necessary judgement calls to step up, he also has come to the conclusion that's the case with many of their Brotherhood. He's no worse than anyone else in that matter, even if he's not particularly thrilled with the idea of putting his own ideas forward.

He used to be desperate for people to like him. He wanted to be loved, to fit in, to have a place that he belonged. He latched onto whoever showed the slightest affection. He attached himself to his mentor after the slightest praise. It was different now. He no longer cared. He wasn't going to reach out for something that was beyond his reach and didn't deserve anyway. He was a monster and a villain and maybe he had to be that, for the sake of the next generation of mutants, but that didn't change what he had become.

Mostly he's numb. He's done terrible things again and again, not knowing how it could make things better but trusting that it must. And when even the trust was gone, there was no other path. There was no going back, and even if he could. Did he want to be the pathetic mess he'd been before he'd been made into what he was now? He'd been a victim. Better to be a predator than prey.

He's still capable of feeling, though he thinks he's incapable. He thinks he's dead inside, though he still feels anger, resentment, regret. Negative emotions break through the numbness with more ease than positive.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE

Dustin was born in North Salem and raised by his grandmother. His mother was around, but she wasn't exactly motherly. She had been sixteen when she had him and never wanted a child. Growing up, he was something of a friendly, cheerful child. It seemed like he had endless reserves of energy and smiles. With people who gave him three seconds of attention had him. He‘d act however he thought they wanted if it kept the attention coming, wilting as soon as they rejected him.

He liked school, at least the intellectual aspect of it. He had the usual angst of growing up and feeling like he didn’t quite fit. Just magnified, since the people of North Salem didn't like people that were different, and he was very different at times. While he was friendly with most people and they with him on the surface, things remained distant. When he was befriended, whether it was a real friendship or not, he accepted it instantly because he really had no one other than his grandparents. He really wanted to get away from it all, and he did for a while. His grandma put him through college, discussing different majors and what he'd like to do.

A revelation came to him in college. It came from having good friends who he didn’t have to pretend around. Not everyone was like the narrow minded people he grew up around. He could just be himself. They were more important to him than his degree or his vague plans. The fact that they were mutants just made it better. Pretty much everyone where he lived hated mutants. So he’d gotten to know them as a silent ‘screw you,’ and was pleasantly surprised to find them worth knowing.

His grandfather’s health was failing, and so instead of job-searching after school was finished he came home to help out. Helping out around the diner wasn’t too bad, he just couldn’t stand being back home after the initial freedom of college. He couldn’t complain though. Izzie needed him there, Christine and Richard were of no comfort to her as her husband died. Dustin stayed by her side, and though he wasn't as grieved as he'd thought he'd be by his grandfather's death, he wept anyway because he realized suddenly that he was soon going to lose Isabelle in the same way.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)

Dustin had returned home. His grandfather had died, and grandma Izzie needed him. North Salem wasn’t directly attacked when Apocalypse’s Horsemen rode, but it was pretty damn close to the action. For Dustin, it was an even closer call. He’d finished college the end of the fall semester, otherwise he would have likely been smack in the middle of it all. A few close friends of his had moved to mutant town, and he’d practically lived at their place the last semester. Their building was rubble, and either they’d been home at the time or the minions of war had dealt with them. He didn’t find out until after it was over. If he hadn't moved home to help out, he'd have been there when it happened.

The hurricane that hit NYC made for terrible weather in the surrounding areas, and it could have very well been worse. There were windows damaged and the roof needed to be repaired at the diner and a tree had nearly fallen on the house, but otherwise things were fine.

POST-APOCALYPSE

The assassinations. They shocked him as they shocked everyone. As he thought he was human, he had some fear, but having had friends that were mutants… having spoken to them of how mutants were treated and such… he shouldn’t have been so surprised. A person could only take so much before breaking. Or pushing back.

A fight with his step-father wasn't what finally set Dustin's powers off, but the timing was terrible. He felt sick and shaky from the changes and didn't realize what was happening. Before the nature of his mutation was understood, everyone in the house was dead. Including his grandmother.

A month after that event, Dustin was living in Mutant town. He stayed there for about six months before some police issues led to some Brotherhood members [including Spitfire and Manslaughter] saving his sorry ass and recruit him. That summer was spent training in the former BH base Murderworld, mainly in the knives and swords that his mentor favored. After the end of the summer, events led to that base being destroyed in a horrific trap for their enemies. The Brotherhood relocated in an underwater city called Sanctuary they had been preparing for that moment.

PURIFIERS

The Brotherhood were safe in Sanctuary when the Purifiers began their attacks on mutant kind. And many were chomping at the bit to retaliate. Toxin was no exception. However, they were ordered to do nothing. To let mutants see for themselves what humankind was capable of. Sanctuary was open to mutantkind however, to live in peace away from humanity. A paradise.

He was deployed on missions with his comrades in arms, and fought and killed as he must to further the cause. He used the weaponry that Manslaughter taught him to use, more often than the deadly weaponry that came with his mutation. He saw that as a mercy, as his toxins were not only deadly but painful to endure.

D Dustin was one of those sent to Xavier's after the explosions. Not to fight, but to rescue whoever he could. It was a little strange to be there. He might have ended up there if the first person he'd met from the place hadn't been so condescending and patronizing. The destruction didn't effect him the way that it might for someone who knew what it was supposed to look like. It was just another example of what he was fighting to prevent. He pulled injured children from the rubble, and then- there were enemies he could fight. He took out quite a few of the grounded Purifiers out before his powers were nullified, and then - well he had learned how to use a blade and that skill could not be nullified.

SKRULLS

Dustin had been taken by the Skrulls early on. He'd been on Skrullos for around a year. He was tormented, tortured, and experimented on. What had remained of the naive youth he'd once been was destroyed in that time. More than once he'd been pushed into a feral state. The wonder was that he didn't stay like that.

The rescue was bloody and messy, and he killed with a viciousness the reptilian mutant had never displayed before. Once it had been a restrained violence. When he had to kill, he did it quick and clean. That ended after that long year in a dark cold cell. Humans and mutants fought the escapees from Skrullos when they reached Earth. By the time he made it back to Sanctuary, he was injured and weary. There was no warm welcome for him, either. His Skrull imposter had attempted to kill Manslaughter while he was gone, so Roger was not pleased to him. It took some care to keep things from getting out of hand.

CURRENT HISTORY

Things never went back to normal, as normal as things ever had been for him. His former relationships suffered and ended from neglect. When he wasn't on a mission or training, he kept to himself. Something about him had changed about him, and the most obvious of it all was that he just didn't care anymore.

He, who used to desperately needed to belong, to be liked, no longer gave a fuck if he had anyone's approval. He's rarely shown any emotion outside slight annoyance or anger since returning, after the first few days where he attempted to return to normalcy. That wasn't going to happen though, and eventually he accepted that. He returned to active duty almost immediately, as his injuries were not severe.

His personal relationships deteriorated since then. He gave more than he got... that was over with. He only put the same effort that others put forth for him, and generally that was next to nothing as far as he could see. His life became little more than the next mission.

During the attack on Sanctuary by Vulcan's creations, Dustin went on the offensive. It was obvious he could not damage the massive constructs, yet he threw himself at them nonetheless. He barely distracted one, and ended up getting swatted into a building. Broken bones, lacerations and worse... he spent a long time in the infirmary. Longer than he should have. Once it was clear he wouldn't perish from his wounds and would care for himself, he was on his own, and began the road to recovery once more.

SAMPLE RP POST:

Dustin fought with a quiet intensity. His fangs were bared in a wordless snarl as he sliced his way through target after target. His eyes were covered with a heavy cloth blindfold, yet he moved without faltering.

Each of the targets were implanted with heat sensors, and he identified one after the other moments before tore them apart. An aspect of his powers had been terribly neglected, one of his reptilian characteristics that allowed him to sense heat. He could not 'see' his targets as such, but he could make out their general shape and location.

It was enough. He could take his targets out unawares in the dark. It was an advantage. Any advantage was worth exploiting, it could mean the difference between failure and defeat or a successful mission.

His wounds no longer pained him when he trained. Not like they had when he'd first been released from the infirmary. His bones had healed, his skin grew back where it had been scraped from his body. Nothing had been irreparable and months of extensive training had returned him to his old strength and agility. Perhaps beyond it. He had held back before, even in training. There was no point to it, there had never been. Whatever had held him back before had broken though, and he destroyed everything without restraint.

Until he swung his blade at the next target, and he scented something that did not belong. It wasn't a target. It was one of his comrades.

His sword stopped mid-air, less than an inch from their throat. "Announce your presence next time. Idiot. I could have killed you." There was a dull anger there, a roughness to his voice that was barely perceptible. He pulled the blindfold down and left it hanging around his neck a moment before it occurred to him it could be used in an attempt to strangle him and took it off irritably."Is there a reason you interrupted me?"

Are you sure you want him in Other? As you know, it's hard to integrate characters in that faction. I'd suggest putting him in Morlocks, he seems suited to it.

since his saliva contains toxins… care has to be taken to take advantage of it without getting yourself poisoned.

His body is affected by his own toxins, though he can and does build up an immunity to them.

You're telling me he can be affected by his own mutation? Not likely. I appreciate the effort of making it into a weakness.... but snakes have antibodies to their own venom. I'm almost positive he'd be immune.

He didn’t realize she was his mother until he was about ten years old.

I'm confused by this whole thing. If he was told she was his sister, he'd have no reason to suspect her to be his mother, unless someone told him. This needs clarifying.

The history is a little convoluted and hard to follow but I have no real issues otherwise.

Weakness/ toxins

Okay, the issue with his weakness I agree. Makes sense, but not all the toxins are venom, and it merely takes his body time to adjust to new toxins. It doesn't affect him 99% of the time, just when there are new toxins flooding his body. If that clarification doesn't make any more sense than what I previously had, I can drop it. No need for me to make him suffer more than he has to. The bit of the toxins in his saliva wasn't meant for him, just if anyone took it into their head that it might be of use to someone else.. it isn't. If its confusing I can just remove that bit regardless of whether the weakness is kept or dropped.

History

I can try and sort that out a bit. I am pretty sure I was running on two hours of sleep after writing straight through the night before, so I can probably make it a little more easy to follow at least. I'm going to say the step-father brought the subject of his mother up, since no one else in the family was willing to shed light on the subject before that. He wasn't above being an ass just to be an ass.

Factions

I'm hesitant to place him in a faction. I don't want him with the x-men merely because I have Kel and Melody there, and part of the reason Dustin happened was because I wanted something entirely different. The Morlocks are a possibility but I just don't see him staying with them for very long. Same with any faction, unless he was attached to a specific person. He's not a group person at all, though if someone he was loyal to was part of a faction or joined a faction he'd probably follow along.

I want him to find another faction in character or for someone else to find him, rather than place him somewhere he'll probably feel trapped in within a few weeks. I know its harder to get a character into things without a faction, and it'd be much easier to just put him somewhere and tell him to stay, but it seems out of his character to just fall into a group without some resistance. I won't say that having him join the Morlocks is out of the question, just that I'm not cutting it down to just that option. If after a thread or two, it seems that's what will work for him, I'll go with it. 'Cause, really, I love my Morlocks.

If you feel it's too far out of character to put him in a faction, that's fine, I don't want you to feel you have compromise him. I just don't want to see him half-baked and ultimately ignored/dropped because you can't find enough to do with him. I'm not trying to be an ass here, but you have a bit of a tendency to character-juggle.

Let me know when you've sorted the history out. I'm fine on the other points; if you could put the clarification into the weakness section that'd be great.

When updating the bio for Dustin's return to activity, I re-wrote the personality to follow the changes that occurred after years involved with the Brotherhood. I also edited the power description, and re-wrote parts of the history (simplified his early childhood just for the sake of making it succinct) besides adding more recent events.

The edits to the power description included something regarding a new aspect to the reptilian characteristics. "Scales have formed under his current layer of skin, but the flesh has yet to slough off to reveal them."

Let me know if I need to go into more detail or clarify anything. Thanks.

Sorry about the wait Tris. I'm fine on you bringing Dustin back and I think now is the right sort of time, just keep going steady and don't rush anything too much.

All I think you could add is maybe some more thoughts on the new leadership of the Brotherhood/the lack of Magneto/etc and if that has any sort of impact on how he feels about serving with them, especially as one of his recruiters essentially deflected.

Just a few lines in the history somewhere or perhaps some specifics in personality where you brush on it a little would be perfect.

Great. It's interesting to see the conflict in the Brotherhood regarding the leadership so that may be useful in game.
