September 18, 2009 08:03 Jus Soli Outpost: Classified Location Santo stood at attention as his CO entered the tent that had become a sort of war room for the group of troops stationed at this particular location. "At ease, Quarry," The mustached man waved his hand at the mutant composed of rock in the middle of the room. He flopped behind the ornate desk that he made his aides port around from outpost to outpost, pulling a bottle of whiskey from a drawer. "A little hair of the dog?" he offered to Santo shaking the bottle enticingly. "No thank you, sir," Santo replied rigidly. "Well, I will indulge myself," replied the colonel upturning the bottle at his lips. He smacked his lips and studied Santo for a second. "You don't like me too much do you Quarry?" the colonel emphasized the word. It was he who had instituted the codename mantra that this particular section of the army used. The younger recruits were really enthusiastic about it but the veterans thought it was a bunch of useless trouble. It was weird for Santo to think of himself as a veteran. It had been less than a year since he joined up and he had yet to reach his eighteenth birthday. Yet, the longevity of service in the JS army wasn't long and word has spread about what had happened in July garnering him the respect of new recruits and the older soldiers. Even if he wasn't old in years he was old in spirit and identified more with the older veterans who looked at the fighting differently than the new recruits, who were eager to be involved in their first battle. "What I like or dislike isn't really important, sir," Santo replied stoically. He couldn't stand the Colonel. He thought the codename idea was stupid. The colonel was a notorious drunk and Santo thought he was enormously petty and a kiss ass. He got a lot of his men killed including Santo's former squad. His idea of reconnaissance work was to throw a bunch of men out there to be shot at. It was Santo's personal opinion that the only reason he was a colonel was by wining and dining the right people in high places and being a hold over of the war for independence. Santo was a soldier, however, and couldn't do a damn thing about it. So he just followed orders. The colonel grunted and took another swig from his whiskey bottle. "You're a piece of work, kid. You're more of a pain in the ass than Quad ever was." Santo remained silent at the jab at his former sergeant. He knew the man was just trying to get a rise out of him to get him discharged or at least court-martialed. "Well I certainly didn't invite you in here for the pleasure of your company, private." The Colonel continued briskly. "I have a new assignment for you. Apparently you've got quite a fan club with the higher ups because of that stunt you pulled back in July. I got a special request for you to be assigned to this." He gave the private a hard look. "I hate it when people tell me how to do my job." Santo remained silent. "Anyways, apparently a human assassin was able to infiltrate the capital and took out a high ranking official yesterday morning. A psych squad has been tracking the bastard and he is near our location, holed up in some cave about 20 kilometers to the north." He handed a slip of paper to Santo. "There is a teleporter standing by to transport you near location. "Okay." Santo curtly snapped to attention and prepared to leave the tent. "Not yet private," the colonel barked. "I'm assigning you a partner for this op. He's been given high marks coming out of training camp so try not to get him killed okay? You seem to have that effect on people." Santo grinded his teeth loudly in frustration as the Colonel called out, "Reaper! Get in here." Santo studied his partner as he entered the tent. He turned back to the Colonel. "If he has what it takes he won't get killed." The colonel grunted and waved them out of the tent. Stepping outside, Santo turned to the new recruit. "Santo Vacarro, codename Quarry. Nice to meet ya. Stick with me and keep your head down and you might just make it out of this alive." He called out to a woman standing outside a red tent. "Casey, are you my transport?" "You betcha, big guy," she replied. "Well then," Santo sighed laying a hand on the woman's shoulder and looking over at the new recruit. "Let's go save the country," he remarked sarcastically as light began to envelop them and they were transported away. |

Energy Manipulation / Wraith Form

Eldan had come to Jus Soli near the end of '08.. and had allowed himself to be recruited into the army within a few months. What else was he to do? He was a fighter.. no. He was a killer. He'd been trained to it ever since his powers first manifested, for control of his powers at thirteen, though it wasn't until he was eighteen that he was first directed to kill someone. He had earned his codename. It had been given to him by the reporters back home; he was the Reaper. Death incarnate. The other recruits had seemed so young. Strangely enthusiastic. He had never dealt with others his age, not since he was a child, and that hadn't gone well. It had been somewhat better in boot camp, though he still kept to himself. He just didn't get them, wasn't interested in the same things.. or anything, really. It had occurred to him that he was lacking in something, but it didn't matter. This existence was acceptable. Better than being like that. They wouldn't last. The Reaper... because, dammit, he wasn't just a Reaper, he was THE Reaper... the Reaper had already been briefed on what he was being assigned to. And with whom. Of course he'd already heard of Quarry. Strangely he was a little intrigued, almost excited to be working with him. More so, he was finally going into the field. It had been too long since he'd been used to his full potential. If ever. He stepped inside quickly when the Colonel called him. Meet the legend, right? Hmph. Arrogant guy. "Eldan Draith, the Reaper. Likewise," he introduced himself simply as they met the teleporter. There wasn't really more he had to say, at the moment. He wasn't going to make assumptions about his new partner, but he wasn't going to try and make nice unless the younger mutant moved first. El lowered his voice. "I'm an energy manipulator. Draining, blasts, energy form." Figured that would be good information to share.. since he'd overheard most of what the Colonel had said - first class jerk, really - and he hadn't decided to let Quarry know. They were transported closer to the location; he fell silent and examined their surroundings. He could do some scouting in his energy form, very quickly, unless Santo felt they oughtn't separate.. |

A flash of brilliant light later and they were standing in a clearing. "You're about a kilometer outbound of the target," Casey informed the pair. "I'll be waiting here for you when you are ready for extraction." "Thanks Casey," Santo replied. He gave a sidelong look to his partner. He had been mulling over the power description that the older man had cited off. "Energy manipulator huh? You may just be okay then. Especially if that energy form of yours is bulletproof. That's the thing about being in this army. I don't care if you can shoot nukes from your hands, all it takes is one bullet and you are through." He was still as gruff as when they first met but for the first time Santo was sizing up the other man as something useful, and not just a target to draw away some of the gunfire from himself. He still wasn't being to friendly because, to be completely honest, people who he befriended had a bad habit of dying on him. He'd even picked up a nickname because of it. But that was something he didn't want to think about. Bringing himself back to the moment at hand he pulled out a map and compass. "Alright then. Looks like there is a ravine a couple hundred feet ahead and it is going to lead down into the cave system that our boy is holed up in. I'll take the left side, you go down on the right." He shouldered his rifle and held up his radio. "If you see anything give me a call and we will rendezvous and figure out the best way to get to him. This guy killed a high ranking official and somehow managed to get all the way out here. Don't underestimate him. But more importantly don't tip him off." He looked Reaper in the eye and said genuinely. "Good luck." Without a backwards glance he was off, flitting between trees. Well, flitting as well as a five-hundred pound made of rock could do. This was where he was at home. No higher ups judging him and trying to get him to dance to their political beat. Just him, an opponent, and the jungle. A fight to the death, the ultimate contest of skill. In the time that he had played the game he had never been beat. At least not yet. |

Energy Manipulation / Wraith Form

Eldan merely nodded his understanding to the woman that teleported them. A very personable young man to be sure. Right. "Yes... and you could say that my other form is bullet proof. It is as solid as a ghost. Pure energy, you know," he said, quietly, still just stating facts. Surely the enemy couldn't hear him this far out, but it was never a bad thing to be careful. He didn't mind that the other wasn't being exactly friendly. Neither was he, for that matter. But he liked his no nonsense attitude, he had to admit. To himself at least. It was better than the bullshit bravado some spouted off; that usually just grated on his nerves. When Quarry returned to the subject at hand and pulled out the map and compass, Eldan's returned his attention to their current objective. It was a damned good thing that he could bring things with him in his energy form or he would be either 1) not using his energy form or 2) not bringing equipment. He'd prefer the first option to the second, as he relied on his powers more than any weapon or device, but the radio would be good to have. Keep in contact with his partner and all that. So it was good he could bring things with him, never mind how that worked. It didn't matter. Quarry's plan was a good one. He wouldn't be deviating from it, unless he had to. So what if the other soldier was the younger, the guy had more experience in this kind of situation if not in his specialty. He remained silent until he was told not to underestimate or tip off the assassin. “I won’t,” he said tonelessly. They were both sent in for a reason, no matter… A sharp nod at the ‘good luck’. It was well meant, though El didn’t believe much in luck. “Let’s make our own luck,” he replied, and vanished into his energy form without a trace, without any fancy tricks. The Reaper moved through the trees, not bothering to go around them as he headed toward the ravine.. To the right as mentioned. While he no longer had eyes with which to see, he kept his senses sharp as he searched for their opponent. Now that it had come down to it, he was at the hunt again, in the real jungle rather than the concrete jungle, but the target was the same. Human fools that thought they could get away with harming mutants. |

Santo pushed through the undergrowth on the left side of the ravine, skirting the edge as he peered down the chasm looking for signs of life. Their prey had picked a pretty smart place to hole up, Santo had to begrudgingly admit. His side of the ravine was curving upwards, meaning that the cave the target was hiding in would be far below him whenever he reached the end. He hoped that Reaper was having better luck on his side, the right seemed to slope down in a few places, meaning that the energy user might be able to come in easier than he would be able to. Santo reached the end of the ravine and peered over the edge. His respect for his adversary just kept growing. He was approximately 300 feet from the cave system underneath and the face of the cliff he was peering down was even slanted inward, foiling his plan of setting up with his rifle and waiting for the bastard to poke his ugly little head out of his hole. He dropped to one knee and scratched his chin thoughtfully. Something didn't add up. It was a great spot. The target could see practically everything coming up the bottom of the ravine towards him and had decent cover from above. But his back was against the wall. Which meant that he either had some serious firepower in that cave or he was waiting for someone to come get him. As the thought was occurring to him, he heard a very dreaded sound, the mechanical sound of helicopter blades. Cursing, Santo stripped himself of his JS insignia and spat a warning into his radio, "Reaper I don't know where the hell you are but we've got company. Chopper coming in from the North. We need to grab this guy quick." Santo crouched up into a ball. Hopefully the incoming helicopter would think he was just a boulder or pile of rubble. The helicopter roared over head and Santo watched it circle. It finally hovered over the mouth of the ravine, only 30 feet from where Santo crouched. A rope was dropped down towards the cave underneath. Santo racked his brains on what to do. Soon, their prey would be safely flying away if something wasn't done. He came up with an idea. It wasn't a particular good idea or very safe for Santo but it was a plan. The advantage of being near the cave system meant that there was a lot of rock for Santo to work with and he was going to need to bulk up and get stronger if this was going to work. Concentrating, Santo began to pull up the limestone underneath him and his body began to be caked in more rock. Standing up, Santo broke into a sprint running towards the helicopter. Time seemed to slow; his footsteps crunched into the ground beneath. The pilot of the helicopter spotted him at the last minute and banked the helicopter away from the edge. Santo leaped out into the ravine, grabbing wildly for the chopper. He was able to catch hold of the railing underneath, and his weight sent the helicopter spinning wildly. "Shiiiiiit!" Santo yelled as he hung on for dear life, regretting his plan. |

Energy Manipulation / Wraith Form

Now, if he'd had to climb down, he'd be having some major problems, he decided, peering down the ledge. It wasn't as steep looking as the other side seemed to be, but all the same he probably would have gotten hurt going down and alerted the enemy as well. So it was all for the better that he didn't have to climb. Being an energy manipulator of the sort that he was, was great sometimes. Well. Always. There wasn't really anything he'd switch it for if given the choice. What he was trying to do, was get some idea where the damn target was. They had picked a decent hiding place. For a human. But they had the mind-set of humans, that their enemies would be restricted by the terrain in the same way that they were. And yes, many mutants would be so restricted. But there were many that could take to the air. Or - become something so completely different that land or air meant nothing to them. Like the Reaper. Finally, unable to catch a glimpse of anyone or any sign of them, he decided that he ought to take a closer look. It was not as if he would be sighted. Being invisible was handy like that. Moments before he returned to his energy form, Santo radioed him. A chopper was coming in from the north, they needed to get the guy quickly. Seemed the plan had changed. Eldan 'shifted immediately and dove off the cliff. He was aware of the helicopter coming and Santo - looking rather larger - jumping off the cliff on the other side of the ravine after it. He couldn't allow himself to be concerned over it, Quarry wouldn't do that if he couldn't handle it. He was sure. They had to finish this. Hopefully JS didn't want the man alive... if they did, they would have specified it. Surely. Underneath the ledge, there wasn’t nearly as many people as he would have expected. Perhaps due to the chopper coming to the rescue. energy drained from the man until he collapsed. Eldan transformed the man into energy- and kept him like that, concentrating carefully. Now that was dealt with… Quarry. The helicopter had spun out of control at the rocky man’s attack. He couldn’t see what had become of the men- or of Quarry. He became visible- though not solid, as their remaining enemies were no where to be seen. Though they might have been thrown from the chopper when it spun out of control. The target remained invisible, intangible energy. “Quarry? I‘ve got him…” Where are you? |
