Santo gingerly sat down in the booth across from DJ, careful to keep his weight evenly distributed. His image inducer was turned on, but it wouldn't be too stealthy if he fell through his seat. It was just one of the many issues one learned to deal with when you were a walking pile of granite. Still, it wouldn't keep him from doing his best to lead as much of a normal teenage life as was possible. Which was why he was here with his roommate in the North Salem mall. Normal teenagers hung out at malls right? Or was that 90s cliche over?

Well, regardless Santo needed to get out more. Being stuck in one building, even if it was a highly advanced mansion that doubled as a hideout for one of the most famous superhero teams in the world, still became boring after a while. One could only fight robots in the danger room so many times before that too became monotonous. So he was here in the food court surrounded by all kinds of people because that was supposed to make him feel better or something. What really would have made him feel better would have been to test drive the arcade game of DDR he had passed on the way in. That probably wouldn't be a good idea though. They probably wouldn't appreciate him trashing an expensive game.

"So," Santo yawned and looked across the table at his buddy. "What are we going to do? You need to shop or anything?" Santo hoped not. He of course couldn't buy anything from these stores. He needed all his clothes especially tailored and he didn't want to go on a shopping excursion with another dude. At least the scenery was good. There were plenty of preppy girls flitting back and forth from American Eagle and Abercrombie with tears in their jeans and low cut tops. With idiot boyfriends in popped collars and rugby uniforms of course, but still, a guy could look, right?

With a prideful almost lustful smile on his lips, Mark Sheppard allowed himself to gingerly find a seat among the scattered empty booths. Mark was glad that he finally was able to convince his room mate Santos to finally leave the comfort of the institute and try and have some fun. It took him all morning to finally convince him, but the music loving mutant finally won and got his friend to cruise the mall with him. Of course Mark had more to his plans than just carrusing the mall. He wanted to flirt and strut his stuff in front of the young ladies, but didn't know if Santos was down with that. After all most physically deformed mutants were touchy when it came to interacting within normal humans of the opposite sex, although Mark didn't know for the life of him why, but figured that it was one of those things where you had to be one to understand. Running his fingers through his hair, Mark turned to face Santos as he began to speak.

" See a day out was exactly what you needed man!" He exclaimed in a jubilant tone, as he threw a side glance to some rather lovely ladies who were sitting no more than a few booths away from them.

"Well..." Mark responded to Santos question with a sly grin on his tender lips, as he leaned in forward towards his room mate. Doing his best to whisper in a low voice so that no one nearby could hear them talk. "I am in the market to find a new girl friend, and what better place than the mall right?" He questioned towards the behemoth of a man before him. "I also figured that you could use a break from the mansion. I mean come on Santos I've been your room mate for sometime now and i've never seen you bring a girl to the room ever! Hell lets be honest i've never seen you even flirt with one, and i figure that's because you don't know how to so. So Rockslide welcome to Mark Sheppard's school for the Cassanova to be!"

Santo cocked an eyebrow at DJ. "In the market? When have you not been in the market, Mark?" He ribbed his roommate good-naturedly. He'd been around DJ enough to know that he fancied himself as something of a ladies man, but Santo hadn't exactly seen that many girls throwing themselves at the musically inclined mutant. Unless he was sneaking them up to the room when Santo wasn't around. "How long has it been since you had you a girl anyways? It wasn't anybody at the Institute was it?" Santo racked his brains but came up empty on who he might have dated.

He nodded along in agreement that he needed to get out of the mansion. He'd been feeling pretty cooped up lately. He massaged the temples of his forehead in exasperation when DJ turned the conversation to Rockslide's love life, or lack there of. "Dude, let me explain something to you." He stabbed a finger at his chest. "Made of rock, bud. Which pretty much brings my dating options to zero. How many girls you know out there that wanna kiss or fool around with a rock? Don't get me wrong, I'm still holding out on the hope that there is some wack job supermodel out there with a kinky fetish or something. But I'm not exactly holding my breath until then. So what is the point for me to get cozy with a honey, just so that the first time she touches me she's going to freak out because instead of getting to hold a human hand, she feels like she is holding a statue?" He didn't want to sound all angsty and depressed so he tried to save a little face. "Don't get me wrong Deej. I've got game. I could pick up a girl here no problem. But what am I supposed to do then?"

It may have been a little bit of stretch for Santo to say that he "had game". His mutation had occurred before he had really had the chance to actually date somebody but he had "gone out" with a few girls before then. Even kissed one of them. So to be fair he had the dating experience of a fifteen year old. To Santo that was plenty and he was cocky enough to think he could pick one of these vapid looking mall rats no problem. In his mind all he would have to do was flex his muscles and they should come running.

"Ouch man!" Mark replied to Santo's remark in jest. He knew his friend was only joking around about him always looking for girls, but still it made the music loving mutant wonder. Was this hat others thought about him? Did they only think he was a guy out for one thing? It was certainly something for him to think about. Gently Mark shook his head, trying to get these thoughts out of his mind as he went back to paying attention to Santos who was still talking. Sometimes Mark would get so rapped up in his own thoughts he'd often accidentally ignore those around him. It wasn't something he did on purpose but it was still a nasty habit of his none the less. tuning back into the conversation Mark was able to just make out the question directed at him by Santos.

"Woow man you got to be careful about the girls you mess with in the institute. Half of them can read your mind, and the other half can see the future. So if your not getting grief about thinking of other women, you get grief about cheating on other women before you even done anything." He said with a rather annoyed look on his face, before the severity of what he said came to mind. "Not that i have cheated on any girl mind you!" He quickly added in as earnest a voice as he could muster. "I think cheating is for losers!" He finished off as he crossed his arms and nodded his head in agreement to himself. "Anyways like i was saying i do my best not to date girls at the institute. Simple reason is that they are always around. Can't have a clean break up if you and the girl share the same address, or at least that's how i see it."

Sure it sounded nice, just like Mark had intended it to sound, but for those who knew him better it was simply an excuse to avoid being intimate with someone close by. Mark had all kinds of intimacy issues, though few people knew this about him. Secretly he wondered to himself if Santos knew this about him. Probably not, but then again the rock golem was rather observant to a point. Most physically deformed mutants were either deep, observant or something of a philosopher, it had something to do with being deformed, but then again that was being rather gene-ist wasn't it. Mark thought to himself as he ran his finger through his hair, once more realizing he was losing himself in his thoughts.

Still though Mark was elated to see that Santos was agreeing with him about how he needed to get out of the mansion more, and perhaps he was even internally agreeing with him about how the rock giant needed a girl, or a man as the case might be. Mark didn't know to much about his room mates personal taste. It never seemed to matter to him. Whether a person liked men or women it was all the same to Mark. Love is love after all[/i] He reasoned with himself while giving a stray smile of approval to Santos.

"Man you sound like one of those really deformed mutants we got back at the mansion. As far as I'm concerned Santos your lucky your made of rock. What about that boy whose skin is made of paper huh? Imagine his life he really can't hope to have any relationship with another human being period. He has to life inside a bubble or else the damn wind could tear the boy to bits. So what if your made out of rock, your built like a ....brick house pardon the pun. Some girls mutants or not might like having a savage golem for a boyfriend, and please boy!" He added with a side cinicle glare."If you got game then I'm Liz Taylor, and unless I'm wearing the wrong underwear as far as i know I'm not!" He finally replied before taking a deep breath of air to replenish his lungs. "Everyone says they got game, but only a select few people in actuality have game. Like yours truly. As long as you let that self pity thing of yours control you, your going to subconsciously repel any person who tries to get close to you. I should know i use to be in the same seat you are." He said his eyes opening wide as he stared at Santos' seat. "Figuratively speaking that is" He chuckled before continuing his speech

."I was afraid i would be alone for the rest of my life to you know. I was afraid that i couldn't have a normal relationship with anybody because every time you turn on some type of music i generate a different power. If I'm not careful i could blow up half the mall if someone plays rock and roll, but the professor's helped me through my insecurities and sure enough i got back on the band wagon, and back on the girls, and for that i am not speaking figuratively!" He smiled and winked at Santos, whom he was sure knew what he meant. "Besides man you got muscles galore on you, i'd kill to be as muscular as you!" He replied while gently slapping Santos' pecks. "Oww.." He gently muttered to himself as he retracted his hand back to himself.

"For real man," Santo agreed with DJ's caution about the females at their school. "Not to mention all the ones who could probably beat the crap out of us. That's a dangerous game to play." Santo smirked as DJ continued talking about cheating and not wanting to have to worry about breaking up at the institute. Sure, buddy. Whatever you say, he thought. He thought that Mark was trying to act all badass but Santo was pretty sure Mark had as hard of a time talking to girls as any teenage boy had.

"Dude, I am one of those deformed mutants." He reminded Mark. "So I got it better than Paper Boy. Big deal. Don't get me wrong I'm not going all emo about it and cry myself to sleep and write bad poetry about it, but lets be real here, there are just some things about me that make living a normal life impossible. I've accepted that. It's a tradeoff. I get the chance at being a superhero; I lose being able to get the girl and settle down." He gave Mark a serious look. "And no offense dude, but don't try to compare yourself to me here. I know you are just trying to help and I appreciate the sentiment, but we are completely different. Your mutation is what you do but you can train yourself enough to switch it on and off when you want to. I can't. My mutation is everything about me." He wasn't trying to be an ass but it irked him a little that Mark was trying to relate when he could only sympathize and never truly empathize with Santo's condition.

He chuckled at Mark's Liz Taylor comment and the mood lightened considerably. "You keep talking that talk, son but can you walk the walk? How bout you back up that mouth of yours." He grinned mischievously and looked around the mall. "How bout a bet? The first guy to get three numbers wins. Loser does the other's laundry for a month. Unless you are scared?" He challenged. Santo may not be able to have a relationship, but he was pretty confident he could pick up a few mall rats.

"You are telling me man!" Mark retorted with a juvilent smirk to his tender pink lips, as the faces of literally tens of young women ran through the mind of the young musician. It was certainly true that Mark and Santos were powerful mutants. There was no denying that for sure, but against some of the girls that made up the female population of the school even their awesome power was nothing compared to theirs. It was one of the few side draw backs of living in a mutant school. Every now and again you ran into a girl who happened to have a power that could put yours to shame. Shake his head in disapproval Mark once more forced his mind back on topic.

"Roger!" Mark interjected during Santos' speech about his own short comings when it came to his mutant disability and how it wasn't easy for people like him to talk to women. Yes Mark was listening to Santos, and he even felt for the boy, but for some reason he couldn't allow Santos to call the young mutant by something as derogatory as paper boy, especially when he himself knew his real name. "The boy's name is Roger, Santos and he's a wonderful soul. Truth be told if i was a woman I'd date him, but I'm not so i wont!" He added with another tenacious smirk, before shutting up and listening to the boys speech once more.

Mark's smirk quickly vanished though as he heard Santos' talk about his mutation. Clearly this boy had some kind of misgiving when it came to his power. He thought it was easy having Mark's power, when truth be told it was not. Hell to be quite honest the young musician would of loved to have traded powers with Santos, but that simply was not possible. He should know years of wishing he had a different power only left him with unfulfilled desires. "Your wrong Santos! My powers..." He said in a lowered voice. "My powers are not so easy as ytou think. Sure i can switch them on and off, but thats only when i know theirs an on and off button. My body immediately reacts to the music, so before i even know it the powers are on and going hay wire. So you know what that means right? I have to be on my guard 24/7. I never know when someone is going to blast some type of music that will cause me to i don't know BLOW UP HALF OF MY SCHOOL!" The young boy exclaimed still in a hushed tone, before he allowed silence to swallow him.

"Your right i don't know how it is to be you. Your mutation is physical mine isn't, but don't go saying yours is worse when truth is we both drew the short straw. You know i can't even have customized ring tones on my phone because it might set off my powers. I've never been to a concert, and i certainly won't ever reach my own dream of being a famous violin player, without some kind of sound or power dampening device, so don't go playing the woe is me game buddy!" Wow...Mark thought to himself. Where did all that come from. He didn't mean to be so straight forward or frank with Santos it was just that years of keeping all that to himself finally proved to be more than he could handle, and all that baggage simply burst from him like water from a fountain.

Mark was quiet for a moment, he felt rather bad about blowing up the way he did, and was about to apologize for it, until Santos brought up the topic of a bet. The mood certainly did lighten up with those words, and Mark found himself smiling once more. "A bet huh!" He responded in kind. "Scared...you bet I'm scared. I mean i can only imagine those ginormous undies of yours. It would take a freaking navy team just to wash one of your funky gym socks, but none the less I'm in. Oh and just wondering but do these numbers count?" Mark questioned as he dumped a handful of paper napkins all with scribblings of girls names and numbers on them. "Hey you left to the bathroom for a while man i had to do something while you were gone!" He added with a hearty laugh before extending his hand out to shake his friends.
