Impact Enduced Duplication
Jamie climbed the short flight of wooden steps toward Jimmy’s apartment. Jet was waiting at the airstrip in the Cessna ready to head back to base. Sunfire had made his own way back to New York. Many parts of Jamie wanted to call him a arrogant prick but he was also conflicted by the solemn condolences he offered in reference to the deceased clone. That was something very few of his own teammates had done. Most of the time, Jamie saw his dupes as virtually disposable and only really thought about the connection he had with them when they were in pain or he was able to glean some kind of information from them. That’s what was making his next part of the mission difficult.

Jamie opened the door of the apartment and walked in. “Honey, I’m home!” he called out.

Madrox looked around to find Jimmy at the kitchen table studying different spreadsheets. Since he was now technically disabled for the time being with his broken leg, he was helping out with the books for the crab boat. When Jimmy saw Madrox come in he set his pencil down and rose from the chair. “What happened?” Jimmy asked. “What was the creature? Did you find out? There’s been talk that the search party came up empty handed.”

Jamie stood by the kitchen counter and said, “Well the creature turned out to be a teenage girl named Sookie. She’s a mutant and hadn’t gained control of her powers yet.”

The Multiple Man continued to relate the story of their ship ride with Captain Mac and the entire attack from beginning to end including the loss of the duplicate. Jimmy nodded along in agreement that he was taking in what Jamie was saying. He was an excellent active listener, he had a lot questions and repeated some of what Madrox had to say in affirmation. All the while Jamie folded and unfolded a sheet of paper in his coat pocket, unsure what to do with it. When Jamie finished his explanation Jimmy appeared to look around the room as if he was taking everything in all at once. Jamie Prime was surprised when his dupe looked him in the eye and said, “Well, do what you came here to do.”

Jamie Madrox had lived a sheltered life, more sheltered than most. He grew up isolated on a farm in the middle of nowhere with no outside contact. When he left the farm for the big ol’ world Jamie realized he missed out on a lot of life experience. He practically sent an army of dupes into the world to live life for him. The plan was for them to return and he would absorb all the information they attained on their journeys. The original plan was for Jamie to absorb Jimmy. Jamie Prime would become as emotionally strong and self-assured as his clone. Jamie had done it thousands of times before and it shouldn’t have been a problem.

The problem was that he looked at Jimmy and saw everything he could be. Jamie knew it would be so easy to just absorb him and all that knowledge of how to be a mature, accomplished adult would just file itself into his brain. Sure, he’d have to work on the beard and do about a zillion sit-ups and dumbbell curls but the basic groundwork was there. He had done something that Madrox hoped to do one day. Jimmy had carved out a life for himself. He was successful and probably had a smoking hot Alaska girlfriend that drove a dogsled team in a bikini or something. Jamie’s cheek twitched a little when he said, “Well, you know. Sookie is going to be here for a while until her family moves. They might need someone to help around the island or something. Mac gave me the coordinates.” Jamie handed the slip of paper from his coat pocket across to Jimmy.

Jimmy looked at the paper and replied, “So, what? You changed your mind? You’ve given up on your master plan to live the lives you never had?”

Jamie scratched his cheek. “That’s not exactly it. You’ve got all this around you and I would be messing up everything you’ve created,” Jamie explained.

Jimmy crossed his arms. “Hmph. You’re getting warmer but not quite,” he huffed.

“Fine!” Jamie erupted. “I want to absorb you. I want to take you back in. I see in you everything that I wanted to be! You’re confident, athletic and I’m pretty damn sure you don’t say things like, I will make ‘That is so fetch’ catch on if it’s the last thing I do.”

Jamie felt like he poured out his heart to the clone and Jimmy only looked at him. “You don’t get it do you? All of that stuff that you said that is in me? That’s in you. It can’t be in me unless its in you. Not to sound like Dad but you can be anything you want to be,” Jimmy said. “Whatever aspect of the original that I represent is still inside.”

Jamie took a deep breath through his nose. “Sorry about that. That was like a scene out of some Nicholas Sparks movie,” Jamie said.

“Okay if you want to be more like me you need definitely stop saying things like that,” Jimmy replied. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

Jamie waved it off. “Yeah. Nothing worth doing is every easy and all that zen, right?”

Jimmy smirked, “I have to say, I am so relieved. If I just up and disappeared my girlfriend Corrine would be so pissed. I bet she’d kill you.”

I knew he had a girlfriend! Jamie thought. He then said, “Well this is where we part ways. Jet has the plane ready to go.” Jamie extended his hand.

Jimmy shook the original Madrox’s hand. “I really am grateful for this,” he replied.

“Just say you owe me one,” Jamie finished.

The two men gave each other a knowing nod. They both knew that something good had happened. Jamie stepped out onto the small porch, pulling the door closed behind him. He blew his hot breath on his hands and rubbed them together as he looked around taking in the final sights of the bay and the town. He then walked down the steps and headed to where Jet was waiting to fly them home.
