"With us?" Rahne asked Doug, her eyes wide with surprise. "Doug, we came out here on a mo-ped. There's no way we could bring them with us."

She was definitely in favor of protecting these people, but how? How could they do it from this position, two young adults, slightly intoxicated, with a small motorbike for transportation?

The amount of money named stunned her. Ten thousand? These poor people were being terrorized for ten thousand dollars? That was it? These people could possibly lose their lives over ten thousand dollars? Not that money in any way equated to the value of human life, but still - ten thousand seemed like a small amount to threaten death for.

"Maybe we could send them over to X-Factor?" Rahne asked, shrugging her shoulders. "I mean, they've got a boarding house next door to them, they own it an' operate it - an' there's no way his family would be attacked if they were living under their roof..."

Sure, technically, that boarding house was populated exclusively by mutants, but she was certain that it was possible that they'd make an exception. At least, she thought so. Hoped so.

They couldn't go to the mansion, that was for sure.

Doug was also horrified at the measely amount of money that was involved in this scenario. Not that there was a justification for murder if the amount was ten times that...or any other sum for that matter, but to hear that it was only ten thousand dollars really disturbed him. It also made him wonder if there was possibly more to the story that they weren't hearing just yet.

Still, it seemed pretty clear that these people were in some kind of danger, and the last thing that they were going to do was to simply turn around and leave them there to their own peril.

Shaking his head at Rahne as she started to protest to taking the whole family for a drunken scooter ride through the busiest streets in America, Doug only smiled. He put a calming hand on her shoulder and reached into his pocket. The man tensed a little, but relaxed when he saw what Doug retrieved.

It was a cell phone.

"Time to call for backup," he said to her. Flipping open his phone, he thought it over for a moment and then began to dial. He put the ear to his phone and listened for a couple of rings and then smiled when the voice answered that he was hoping for.

"Jack? Doug Ramsey here. You're from...Romania, right?"

Jack was making himself a snack after running alone that night when his phone rang rather suddenly. Startled, he whirled about in the kitchen to pick it up off the counter--presuming it was his sister or, god forbid, Philip. But the name 'Doug' flashed up at him from the tiny screen, programmed into his phone on the first day of his arrival along with the numbers and names of the rest of the staff. Needless to say, Jack hadn't done the act himself, and if he remembered correctly it was the samesaid omnilinguist who had put in all the numbers in for him.

Why would Doug be calling me? was the thought that crossed Jack's mind, but he shook it off, trying to remind himself that it could very well be an emergency, although he wasn't sure what kind of trouble Doug and Rahne could get into while on a date.

Regardless of what he though, Jack picked up the phone anyway. "Hello?"

Jack? Doug Ramsey here. You're from...Romania, right?

It was a strange question to be asked of him, and Jack tilted his head curiously, although he was aware that Doug could not see this. "Ummm yeah. From Medias, actually. Why?"

While Rahne and their new jittery Romanian friend waited, Doug spoke to Jack. It was a little bit of an unorthodox conversation, seeing how Doug had scarcely said two words to Jack...well, ever. But Doug tried to shake the awkward feeling off and dove right into the point of the call immediately. He could all but hear the wheels turning in Jack's head as he tried to process the strange question Doug was asking.

"Ummm yeah. From Medias, actually. Why?"

"Perfect," Doug said. The situation didn't really require someone from Romania to intervene, Doug probably was equally fluent in the language to someone who had lived there their entire life. But it would help in the arena of building trust to have someone from the homeland.

"And my second question is do you have a vehicle large enough to carry a family?" Doug and Rahne had their scooter, and the tension of having someone point a gun in his face seemed to have done wonders in helping him sober up. "We have a situation here."

Doug took a couple of minutes to explain the highlights about the Romanian family being threatened by a local mafia of some sort and ran past Jack Rahne's idea to find them a place to stay with the X-Factor while they waited for this thing to blow over. Looking back at Rahne and the man, Doug waited for Jack's reply.

Jack? Rahne was honestly surprised at that. It made sense, really. He was from Romania. But it still surprised Rahne regardless. As he was a werewolf and she was a werewolf, plenty of conclusions had been made around the campus concerning the two of them. They were wrong, of course, there was nothing between the two of them more than a simple camaraderie of similarity. Just because they were alike didn't mean they were romantically involved, after all.

She glanced over to their would-be robber, would... be... name, name... what was his name... Rahne pored it over in her mind... Lucian, right. Lucian. She glanced over at him with a small smile and a nod of her head.

"We'll get you an' yuir family someplace safe, sir," she promised, tempted to place a hand on his shoulder, but decided against it. He was still on edge, and in all likelihood didn't trust them entirely. A physical gesture could have wound up disastrous, and this was not the proper time for disaster, not when they were so close to solving this little thing.

Heh, Rahne thought with a small shake of her head, Go figure that a simple date gets capped off with an almost-mugging.

Perfect. And my second question is do you have a vehicle large enough to carry a family? We have a situation here. Jack swallowed, his mouth going dry; he didn't like the sound of where this was going. He had a motorcycle. Don't be stupid! You can't fit a family on a motorcycle! he chided to himself, quickly trying to think of another option as one hit him almost simultaneously.

"Oh! I bought a truck! Er.. I mean.. I got a pick-up recently. I'm fixing it up, but uh.. it should run okay for now. It might be a tight squeeze in the back.." He shook his head. "Sorry.. um.. you don't need to know all that. Where are you anyway?" Doug took a few minutes to explain the situation, Jack's jaw setting hard as he listened to the difficulties Lucian's family of three was facing just because of money. A line furrowed into his brow as Jack thoughtfully mulled over the situation, knowing exactly what it was like to be hunted.

"X-Factor? Are you sure they'd be safe there?" Jack was already on his way out of the kitchen and pulling on his coat as he balanced his phone on his shoulder. If the situation was as dire as Dough described, he could not afford to waste time. "I mean.. you probably know Scott better than me.. would he understand if we um.. brought them here, maybe?"

Jack pulled open the door on his pick-up, checking the front and back seats for any things that might be in the way. "I uh.. It's just a suggestion. I don't know..." Talking on the phone and trying to do more than one thing at once as starting to hinder him. Everything was happening all at once, but this was how it was supposed to be--to be an X-Man. He had to be a leader and take charge, to set an example for the students--or something.

"Look, I uh.. I can't talk on the phone and drive at the same time... But I'll get there as fast as I can. Just... be alert." He left it at that and hung up. Jack's heart was racing--when did he get in his truck?--what was he doing again? His adrenaline was surging fast, but it was so exciting at the same time to be doing something, which was strange for him, that and even talking in coherent sentences to someone he didn't know very well.

Jack explained how he had a pickup truck that he'd been working on. It wasn't exactly ideal, but it was going to have to do. It wasn't exactly legal to pile people in the bed of a pickup truck and haul them around in the city. They'd be bending the law enough just by piling them into the cab of the truck.

"That will have to do," Doug said.

"X-Factor? Are you sure they'd be safe there?"

Though he knew Jack couldn't see, Doug shook his head slightly as Jack suggested they could possibly stay at the school instead. "They have a boarding house at X-Factor. Designed to take care of people. I think they'll be safe there. They might be safe at Xavier's, but I don't think that would be quite as...appropriate."

Xavier's was a lot of things, but primarily it was a school that focused on nurturing and mentoring children with powers. For that reason it might not have been the safest haven in the world for the family. It was true that they might be able to keep them safe from the mafia, but there was something deep down in Doug that wondered who would keep the family safe. Somehow he doubted that either Xavier or Scott would approve.

The call ended with Jack telling them that he was on his way and to stay alert. Doug slid his phone into his pocket and turned back to Rahne and Jack. "We have someone coming now," he explained in both languages. Then he gestured to the alley. "Let's go get the family."

Though the man seemed a little reluctant, it seemed he was finally ready to abandon any skepticism and trust Doug and Rahne. Doug took Rahne's hand again as they made their way into the dark alley and toward the back of what smelled like a Chinese restaurant. Taking a bar in his hand, the man slid a large metal bin aside and spoke softly to whoever was inside in Romanian.

Slowly they emerged. first a timid looking female, shaking and grungy from their place in hiding. She was followed by two small children that looked as if they might be twins. Doug smiled at them and introduced himself and Rahne in Romanian.

"Good, good," Rahne said with a small smile as Doug and Jack set up the plans. She could hear Jack perfectly fine on the other side of the phone, and she was certain that he could pick up her and perhaps even their would-be-mugger Lucian on their end of the phone. Such was one of the problems with enhanced hearing, those with it became unconscious eavesdroppers. There was rarely the intention of listening in on others, but it just happened.

She stepped into the alley, the stench of garbage, old vomit, rotting food and the like striking her immediately. She held her hand up to her nose until she regained her composure.

"Hullo," she said with a broad smile as the wife and children were brought out. It was terribly sad, the deplorable conditions that they had to live in, but hopefully that would soon change.

"We're goin' t' help you folks out," she said, unsure as to whether or not they'd understand, but still felt it right to say anyway. "We know of a good place, run by good people. Yuir goin' t' be just fine."

She looked down to the two children, and held up one finger, indicating to wait for a moment. She opened up her hand-purse and flipped through it for but a moment until she found her secret stash. She pulled out two Dum-Dum lollipops, one watermelon the other strawberry, and held them out for the kids to take.

For some reason the image of Rahne handing out the suckers to the kids was really touching to Doug. It was probably the closest he'd come to a genuine Hallmark moment in...well, ever. It was a ridiculously sappy thought however, so he kept it to himself.

The kids were elated at their gift and showed their trust openly even if the parents still seemed somewhat reserved. Doug could clearly see the desperation in their eyes though, and he gave them an easy smile to try and calm their fears.

"They look hungry," Doug commented to Rahne without translating. "I saw a pizza cart across the street. I'm guessing they might be able to go for a few slices."

He relayed the information to Lucian whose eyes suddenly seemed to mist up a little as Doug finished. It seemed that the last walls were finally shattered, and Lucian was finally at ease. Without another word, Doug led the family out of the alley and across the street.

Keeping a watchful eye on the road, Doug let the family enjoy a hot meal while they waited for Jack. There wasn't much in the way of traffic on the road, and before long Doug saw the familiar pickup rounding the corner.

"Looks like he's here," Doug announced both in English and Romanian. He stood up and headed to the curb to meet Jack.

(PM sent. We'll end this one here and pick up in a new thread)
