Matter Transformation

August 2008 It had happened so quickly. Or maybe it had been slow, she couldn't tell anymore. She had been her, Delia Colins, the Golden Goddess. Under the blanket of that secret identity, she had saved so many lives she would have lost track had she been keeping tally. In a way completely and totally different from what she experienced as an up and coming piano prodigy in her youth, she was the toast of the town. Her masked siloutte had graced every magazine cover and newspaper for the last several months. She had been everywhere, a beacon of light and hope in a darkened world, and just like that it was over. In a flash, while trying to save a young man, she was attacked, not from any sort of outside influence bent on her destruction. This danger came from within, where it had been lurking, lying in wait since her very inception. The sickness that had crippled her, brought her to the brink of death, overtook her body. In the middle of a fight with some street thugs, the woman who had taken on and beaten down some of New York's biggest and baddest menaces, dropped like a stone, losing consciousness under there flailing fists. That was all she remembered. Then there was the hospital. She awoke there days later to a world that hadn't existed before. Handcuffed to her bed, she was told that she had been worked on. Her body, left without the effects of her powers, was limp and able to be probed. As she knew they would, the doctors found not only her terminal cancer but also her X gene. With that revelation, the Golden Goddess was dead. All that was left was Delia Colins, alone and exposed, dying and ashamed. She had tried to fool them all, live her life as something she was not, and this was her comeuppance. She begged to see her family, begged to be allowed to say goodbye. It was to no avail. She knew what was coming. Everyone knew what happened to mutants. They were sent away, exiled to another country and told never to return, if they were lucky that is. Her abilities kicked back in the day before she was shipped off. At least she had that to be thankful for. Jus Soli was different than she expected. She didn't want this life. She yearned for her own, the one she had built. She wanted the evenings with her family, the all nighters with her sister. That was gone forever though. She grimaced, knowing that her family would be subjected to X gene testing. She said a silent prayer, hoping they would be spared the fate she was now enduring. She longed for their company, for the solace and comfort that only family can provide, but not like this. She began walking not really knowing where she would go within the boundries of this new landscape she found herself in. |

Superheated Plasma Blasts
|
When Alex first ran off to New York to find his brother after he'd blown up a hospital wall in the first manifestation of his mutant power, he'd been alone for several months while Ruby was in jail. He hadn't had gathered his gang yet, so there was no one but a retainer that Ruby had hired somehow from prison, who had made sure the boy had food and some spending money. Alex, fourteen, had been a little twisted by learning he wasn't human, a little torn by finding out his brother was a bank robber, a little messed because he was a teenager. So, he'd spent a lot of time wandering the streets, spending his brother's money, working things out in his head, and watching what was going on in New York, the biggest city he had ever seen in his whole life. And, one of the things that was going on was the rise of superheroes, some of them Shield sanctioned, some of them not. Alex had watched as they became commonplace, as he was slowly driven away from his brother's darker path. He thought maybe he could have been one himself if not for the war. That would have been a kick in Ruby's teeth though, wouldn't it? The bastard could hardly take that his kid brother was a governmental law enforcer for what he called "The Reservation" Having him as a superhero would probably kill him. But there were others who had taken the mantle where men like Alex couldn't. The sanctioned ones were human, or at the very most mutate, accidental powers, equipments, whatever. No mutant was welcomed, not before the war and not after. Hence, the downfall of the Golden Goddess. A superhero, all tights and capes and high heeled boots, or whatever. She was outed and like all mutants who came into their powers after the war, she was sent away. Sent to Jus Soli. Life wasn't as hard here as it used to be. They were growing every day, and the advancements that their powers afforded them, they were quick to go from a third world country to a rising power. People were starting to live here, not just out of necessity, but because it was now home. They would soon surpass the greatest of their former countries for power and prosperity, and Alex secretly feared that if they got too big for their britches, the world would do just what his brother warned, and they would wipe out the mutant race all together. He'd be pretty pissed off it happened, and he wasn't afraid to admit, part of it would be because that meant Ruby'd been right. He loved his brother with all his heart, but the man was a criminal, and he was a selfish, self serving, narrow minded bigot, and Alex felt alternately ashamed of him, and sorry for him. Ruby was not on his mind right now, and he skipped a little in his attempt to catch up with the Golden Goddess as she stalked the streets of the Capitol City. His uniform of black and silver, with accents of red, was pressed and polished, his blond hair swept into the precision that a military man tended to have, and if not for the wide grin on his boyish face, he might have been intimidating in his precision. Alex "Inferno" Summers, was not prone to coming off as a grim politician though, not even when dealing with human governments. He was, despite all that had happened in his life, a good natured man who genuinely wanted to make the world better for his people. "Miss Collins," he greeted, as he caught up with her, offering his hand, "Alex Summers, Official Retrieval and Integration Ambassador for our little tropical home, here. I wanted to welcome you to Jus Soli, and, if you have a few minutes, talk to you about getting you settled into our society here, offer you some possible ways to become productive to our growing country." He waved a hand at a nearby pub, "They've got a pretty good lunch menu, if you're hungry. My treat... well, Magnus's treat since I have a government credit card." |

Matter Transformation

This new land seemed at once strange and comforting to Delia. She was on her own. For the first time in her life she was living without the shelter of her parents or her sister. She had been found out, exposed as a liar and a freak, destroyed by the press which once exhaulted her, and shipped off without thought to her wants or needs. Still, to have the weight of her secret finally lifted from her slender shoulders was a bit freeing for the woman once deemed the Golden Goddess. She was free here, in this new land, to build a life, away from the peering and judging eyes of the homo sapien masses who had come to fear and despise her. There were others like her here and, in the back of Delia's mind, she was almost excited about the chance to get to know people like herself. Jus Soli was different then Delia expected it to be. She imagined, before and while on her commute, that the place would be no more than a dungeon, a true punishment for those who dared to be born different than the masses. At the very least, she imagined it a lawless place, buckled under the weight of so many dangerous and egotistical superpowers. Delight and relief filled her golden eyes as she took in her surroundings. Her hair, for almost the first time in her life, was allowed to shine, gleaming it's natural golden hue. She was surprised once more by the appearance of a man who identified himself as Alex Summers. She jumped a bit as he approached her. Her time as a masked crime fighter had led her to become cautious. Danger, she felt, could be around any corner, especially in strange and unfamiliar territories. Alex was n attractive man and, if in more familiar and casual surroundings, Delia may have taken notice of that. The man identified his position and Delia once again mused at the thought that there was a whole system in place to help people like her. She realized she had horribly misjudged mutants as a whole and that she knew next to nothing about the people who shared her very species. "Nice to meet you, Mr Summers. I'm not sure if you can tell, but I'm a little out of place. So much for the guise of the world wise hero I suppose," Delia wasn't sure if Alex was aware of her past, but she made the joke anyway to ease the tension. "You say you want to get me settled in. That doesn't sound like a bad idea. Neither does food for that matter, and as long as you're paying why not go big." She let a smile creep across her face, hoping it looked natural |
