Intuition was a funny thing, you didn't need all the facts to know something was going on. Kevin could tell by how Laurie and Tommy were not acting around each other that something between the two had transpired. There was too many awkward silences and longing looks and just moments that didn't add up. If he was willing to be completely honest with himself he would admit he was jealous of Tommy. Laurie saw Tommy in a way she didn't see him and for both of their benefits was probably best that she didn't, but that knowledge brought little comfort.

Kevin was territorial, and it may have been childish but he saw Laurie as being his. Besides Tommy had a girlfriend, didn't he? That pop princess Kimberly Parker, wasn't she enough for the speedster? Did he have to come speeding into Kevin's territory as well? How many girls did Shepard need to make him happy? Was he some sort of polygamist or something? He had someone who was all his own couldn't he leave Laurie out of his mess and ride of into the proverbial sunset with that singing Disney girl of his?

All these questions and more had been bouncing around Kevin's head since the Valentine's dance. He hadn't brought any of them up to Laurie out of fear of the turn the conversation that would cause would take. He couldn't ask her about Tommy without divulging why he cared, and he wasn't ready to open up about that yet if at all. Nothing had changed between him and Laurie, and nothing probably ever could, but even with that knowledge he still didn't want to see her with Tommy. Laurie deserved way more then to be someone's plan B, and if he couldn't talk to Laurie about it he would have to go to the other person in question, which meant Tommy. Kevin would get a definitive answer to what was all going on if he had to beat the crap out of Shepard to do it. Not exactly sane logic, but love makes you do irrational things. Finding Shepard in an unguarded moment outside Kevin called out to him.

"Yo, Speedy! You got a minute? I need to talk to you about something."

Kevin kept telling himself he was doing all of this with Laurie's best interest at heart. It was easier to believe that then acknowledge his own selfish motivations.

The day had been bright and uncomplicated, a rarity for the speedster lately. It was mid afternoon and the bulk of his school day was behind him, a comfort that the boy never took for granted. Since coming to the institute,he had unintentionally worn a slight grove into the path he would regularly chose to frequent. He walked outside, into the sunlight, and looked at the product of his handiwork. It stood as concrete evidence of both his power and his tendency to try and run away from the problems in his life.

Problems, come to think of it, was not something the white haired student was in short supply of. The truth of his origins had sent him spinning a bit. It was the sort of thing he would have to sort through and get his bearings about it. Not that one would be able to tell that by looking at him. He had become a master of both the artful dodge and the use of humor as deflection. To the outside world he was just happy goofy Tommy. Throw on top of that Kimmy's recent departure and the weirdness he had, in no small part, manufactured with Laurie out in New York, and it was beginning to look like a jog was in order.

Tommy bent down to check the laces on his shoes, a lesson he learned the hard way, when he heard a shout from behind him.

"Yo, Speedy! You got a minute? I need to talk to you about something."

It was Kevin, Laurie's possessive new friend. Tommy didn't know too much about him, except he followed the blond girl like a puppy on a string. That irked Tommy, especially given the current twists in their relationship. Tommy stood up, took a beat to turn around and stifled the urge to roll his eyes. He had no desire to have a conversation with Kevin.

"Yeah dude, I was about to go out for a run. What's up?" His voice was layered with impatience and agitation. He was almost subconsciously being rude to the boy.

On the surface there seemed nothing extraordinary about Tommy Shepard. So the kid had super speed, big flipping deal. Extraordinary powers were a dime a dozen around this place, everybody could do something that was why they were here. And who had white hair, seriously?! It all just looked like someone who put to much effort into being ostentatious. Shepard wanted to be visible and fawned over, keep the Parker girl as his but Laurie just a phone call away. Well screw that shit! Laurie was a great girl, damn near perfect in fact, she deserved someone better then that dick Shepard. She deserved.. well she deserved someone like Kevin, if he could give her what she needed, but even with that off the table the pheromone maker still deserved more then the speedster. She needed someone who could see hear s the great girl she was, and that's he was more than anyone's second choice. Laurie Collins was a catch and Tommy Shepard was just the dick who like his power attested to wanted to speed all over the girl and use her then lose her. Well it stopped now if Kevin could do anything about it. Maybe Laurie was too much the sweetheart who cared too much for Tommy to lay down the law but Kevin was held to no such relationship. it mattered little what Tommy thought of him, but the fast moving teen would know that Laurie wouldn't become a mark for him. He was doing this for Laurie for her own good. She'd thank him for it, eventually. Once she saw he was right of course, and that Shepard belonged with Parker and that he was just bad news.

"Yeah dude, I was about to go out for a run. What's up?"

He looked at the white haired kid, it was hard to hide the disgust Kevin knew was showing on his face. He didn't like Tommy for a lot of reasons, the main one being that the speedster had the advantage that Kevin didn't. He could be with Laurie if he wanted, hold her, kiss her do all the things that Kevin had to work round the clock to not think about. So that he could go on day to day and not fall into a pit so dark he would never come out of. He pulled at the right corner of his mouth with the back of his gloved hand. His mouth felt dry suddenly, like it anticipated what was coming quicker then Kevin himself did.

"I could ask you the same thing. Whats up with you and Laurie man?! you might think you have everyone fooled with this Opie Taylor quick quipping act you put on, but I know what you are. You wanna keep Kimmy on your arm and Laurie as you consolation prize. Well its gonna stop. Laurie is too good for you, so stick with your Pop-tart and stay the Fuck away from Laurie or its gonna get a lot more personal. You hear me?"

Fire burned in Kevin's eyes, and somewhere deep in the pit of his stomach, somewhere dark and twisted a small spark of desire to take of his gloves and attack Tommy flared up and ached to be used.

Kimberly was not an aggressive girl by any stretch. However, when she happened upon her boyfriend, during a jog, being yelled at by someone she only barely recognized, she only could see one way to respond. She let the two boys greet each other, before rolling up on Speed and smothering her in her usual amount of attention when she heard every single word Kevin had for him. To say she was pissed off was an understatement.

Before Tommy had even had a chance to respond to Kevin, she approached quickly, a ball of water the size of a bowling ball quickly appearing at her side. The sphere was spiraling and twisting in place as she stopped beside Tommy. "I am pretty sure that was a threat. How personal do you want to get Kevin?" She pulled her arm up quickly, pulling the sphere up and pointing it directly at Kevin's face. She was pissed, pissed about the Laurie subject at all, pissed about being called a pop-tart by some emo kid, pissed that her boyfreind was being threatened, and was not about to walk away. It was the same face, in fact, that she had when SHIELD had trapped them in that night club, and Tommy had seen it at that time.

"Hands twitching there? Laurie not interested in ya?" Her voice went from angry to condescending in a flash. "Sounds like we need to call a whaaaabualance." She drew a finger up to her tear duct and drug it downwards on her skin, forming a fake tear above it and then flicking it into the sphere. "I dont know Laurie very well, but I am pretty sure she would think this is creepy as all hell." She pulled out her phone. "Maybe I should text her? I am sure she would have a few words!"

Anger seemed to coarse through him carried along the same veins that fed life. His head felt clouded and yet very clear, all he could see was rage. How much he wanted to hurt Speed, to take out all the hostility and resentment and just plain anger that he kept bottled in so tightly. Looking at the speedster through this new hate fueled sensation he could almost visualize the death in the teen, what would happen if he grabbed him with his gloves off, and just let loose on what he worked to control. Before Shepard had much if any chance to react, the girl he claimed was his girlfriend arrived in a ball of water. Who did this chick think she was Glinda the fucking witch of Xaviers? Who the hell traveled by bubble? It seemed an over exaggerated and flashy use of power, probably the by product of a teen who felt so insecure in herself that she had to make a spectacle out of every simple thing she did. He wasn't surprised really what was Kim Parker if not a spectacle, a blond bimbo Disney singing princess wanna-be, running around expecting everyone to fawn at her trampy heels because outside of these walls she had been something of a celebrity? Well so had Debbie Gibson but no one really fainted over her anymore now did they? To Kevin Ford, Kim Parker was a washed up starlet who had probably seen her peak along with her virginity pass her by long ago. If she wanted to run to her cheating Lothario of a boyfriend and stand by her man what the fuck ever. Her feelings meant little to him. He just wanted Tommy away from Laurie, if the Speedster sought to live vicariously through the tart well that was his misfortune.

Parker starting railing against him, issuing off her rant and remarks in that nasally voice he found so infuriating. How had the bimbo ever been a singing star, her voice was like nails scrapped over a chalkboard, and further living proof that kids would buy anything if you tramped it up and put it on the cover of Rolling Stone holding a Tele-tubby. Pedophiles and Preschoolers that was Parker's audience, and looking at her he only felt his anger for Speed split off and target her as well. When she brought Laurie into it he thought he might lunge at her. Who the fuck did she think she was threatening him?! Disney may have said she was a princess but around here she was just second class, used up and washed out. No wonder Shepard was eyeing Laurie as her replacement. Kevin couldn't have cared less if Speed dumped Parker in the trash like her last single, it was only that Laurie was involved that was the source of contention.

"Sounds like we need to call a whaaaabualance."

He cut his eyes from Tommy to the blond. Whaabulance? Seriously the girls mockery was as lame as her singing. Only someone with about two working brain cells would think that was an insult.

"Save it Princess, Don't you have a 'Has been' signing or something to go to, a limo to exit minus your panties so you can get you ugly mug plastered on the tabloids. This has nothing to do with you Lohan, so stay out of it. Unless you boyfriend needs you to talk for him. Do you keep his balls in a bag along with your poodle?"

The more he spoke the angrier he seemed to get, only now what had been rage was icing over into a even more potent seething hatred. He looked at the pair and felt a disgust he hadn't ever before, a distaste fueled not so much by their presence but by the representation that they were a part of everything he wasn't, a life that he could be a voyeur to but not an active participant of.

"If you wanna text Laurie knock yourself out. Hell, I'll be surprised you even know how to work a phone, but while your at it Pop-tart why don't you ask her what your boyfriend was up to with her when he was planning your big Valentine's treat. Seems your stuff like your career aint as promising as it once was."

"Why don't you step in Shepard, Be a Tiger man, tell your girl how many your holding on the line, and how you tried to make Laurie your next."

Kevin was a douche. Tommy tried to make it more complicated than that. He attempted to see past the outright rudeness spewing from the young mutant's mouth. He realized there must have been unimaginable pain for him. To have to deal with a mutation that was so horribly limiting. Tommy had always seen his gifts as a blessing. They were what made him special, the thing that lit him up and gave him both purpose and enthusiasm. TO that end, he had given Kevin all the sympathy and leeway one would expect. He looked as him with pity, though the boy never asked for it.

That was why when he found himself at odds with the boy with the decaying touch, he was so shocked. Still, even if he had the strength of will to overlook the harsh words and assumptions leveled at him, the way he spoke to his girlfriend was inexcusable.

In a flash he was in front of Kimmy, dangerously close to the boy. Yes, Kimmy had overreacted in her first move, but the sheer audacity with which Kevin spoke sent the speedster into a tizzy.

"Dude, you are gonna take all that crap back. Do you understand me ? Nobody talks to my girl like that. Don't you dare talk to either one of us like you know us. You don't know jack, and my guess is you don't know much about Laurie either. Otherwise, you'd know we were friends, that's it." Tommy hadn't told Kimmy about the almost kiss with Laurie in New York. He didn't know how to deal with it, how to bring it up. Still, Kimmy was his girlfriend, not Laurie.

"Wanna know something about me, dude, something real. I spent a long time in juvie. Keep talking and I'll show you what I learned there." Tommy was furious. His body almost shook with anger as he spoke to the boy.

"Wanna hear something even more real douchebag? I fought zombies in the apocolypse and escaped from ShadowX. I aint scared of your punk ass." Kimberly, was usually a nice person. She had kindness in her heart for everyone, but there was something about Kevin that had aggravated something very particular inside her. She had gave Kevin a chance to say sorry, and the chance was passed.

She lowered her ball of ice in a flash, and from point blank range she pushed it forward through the air into Kevin's gut. "I hit harder than Tommy be-te-dubs." Kimberly said in her cutest tee hee voice. She then did a small spin, pulling the iceball into the air and then driving it down into Kevin's back.

She took a few steps away from him, disgust evident in her face. "Now, I have given you a precious gift Kevin. You know can approach Laurie, a girl you will never be able to touch or make love to, and play another sympathy card." She glared at him.

"Cause god knows you play the one you already have hard enough. I am a pop-star with no family, I do something I love and that gives you the right to use one of my passions as a ammo against me? You are the single most obsessive creepy person I have ever met. Girls think alike dude, and Laurie's patience with your antics is gonna dry up real quick." She melted the ball ontop of him, effectively drenching him, and crossed her arms.

"Apparently we have a conversation coming up too, Speed." She shot him a confused and angry glare and started away from the two boys. Cursing to herself about the entire thing.

The world seemed to almost slow down, not with any real force but almost as if it anticipated the climax of this battle and wanted to bare witness. He was glad for it in a way, it should be witnessed and testified to. He had an anger that was righteous in its indignation, and a disgust that was pouring out of his very being. The speedster came to the defense of his ever dim whited excuse for a pop princess girlfriend, and she of the blond locks and two working brain cells seemed resigned to her backwoods trailer park "stand by your man" approach to it all. If left with a trade off between Kimmy Parker and a jar of shit, Kevin knew all you'd lose was the jar.

"I've never asked for your sympathy you god damn Jack rabbit. You think juvie was a tough call try Fucking SHIELD custody if you wanna play a pissing contest. And I'd like to see you try, you might move fast, but all i need is one second and that hand of yours will be something off the fucking crypt keeper. Damn sure wont do you much good, you are your singing Disney tramp. Tell us Kimmy was it a long hard road from the trailer park to the top of the pops. Kids are fickle aint they one day your selling out arenas the next you cant even get booked. Your talentless, your a hack, and honestly you two deserve each other."

The blond wanna-starlet went off the rails then raging about how she was unloved, and just the shiniest wee star in the whole galaxy shedding her passionate love down for all the small folk below to be touched by her Mickey Mouse sanctioned greatness. He wondered if she'd break into a routine right there, perform one of her award winning classics such as "Nothing comes between me and my makeup bag" or some other dribble that sounded like the screechings of a banshee over a techno beat and drum machine.

But the young mutant had little chance to call her out on such, because before he got get out another round of his verbal toxin the water kinetic sent him hurling to the ground courtesy of one of her tricks. He'd give her credit for that at least as his chest collided with the ground and all the air in him rushed out, she couldn't sing but she knew how to hit.

She spat out some more of her scorned indignation, "I am woman" antics as water poured into his eyes and he struggled to get to his feet. She turned and walked away muttering something to her luvey and heading off to probably go cry and serenade her waterfall a little bit, everyone knew that was her shtick.

He turned over onto his back, bruised, and soaked courtesy of the water sprite, and a dry laugh erupted from him. He should feel embarrassed but he didn't. He had just went against everything he promised himself he would never do, and had actually felt more alive in doing so then he had in a long time. In that moment Kevin let go of the false hopes he had been holding on to. He would never get these people's acceptance, all they had was pity and feigned sympathy, which was about as effective as a used condom. No, he realized then something that had been eluding him, in short he was simply above them. Because he knew at their core they were as rotten as he was, they just masked it with quippy phrases and stolen glances, or too much make up and the belief they were a star. But inside they were just rotting corpses. He knew that because he could see it, see it and feel it in his bones. Maybe the tone deaf brat was right, maybe he was just creepy.

"Look like somebody's gonna get a harsh singing to later." He said struggling back to his feet, a trail of dead grass laying witness to wear his face had collided with the ground.

"Don't worry Speed-O I'm sure she'll get a few what she calls good songs from it. That or she'll just hike up her skirt a little more and drop her panties, but hey whatever helps sell tickets right?"

He flashed the boy a venomous smile.

"You might wanna go chase after her. My guess is she'll be crying and serenading that pond of hers down there. She's good for that, and don't worry about Laurie man, she's in good hands"

And with that the young kid who had tried so hard to be good let go of that pipe dream and decided that he'd rather embrace who he was then turn out like the white heard speedster. He turned and walked away in the opposite direction of the jilted Lothario, laughing to himself the whole time.
