On a highway jutting east from Superstes, the capital of Jus Soli, if you take a right turn at the right interjection, you'll find yourself at the vacation ranch house of General Buford Tecumseh Hollis. If and when he got any leave time, he'd be out there, usually working on a tractor or a beat up truck that he had scavenged from the jungle. From the wars, you understand? People abandoned their trucks, and left them to rust and die. General Hollis was running a truck sanctuary in his spare time.

But today, General Hollis couldn't be found at his ranch home, but rather his well-furnished but not extravagant apartment near the Presidential Palace in Superstes. If you had told him, 20 years ago, when he was just an ex-soldier driving a big rig in the States, that he was going to be a general, a four-star general, in charge of the army of one of the most powerful countries on the planet... If you told him that he was going to be sent across the world as part of a diplomatic and military envoy... Well let's just say that Buford would have trouble believe you. If you told him that he was going to live in the jungle for five plus years and lose all the weight he had put on driving that truck, that he was in better shape at 48 than he was at 20, well it sounded nice, but he wouldn't have believed that either.

He had gotten up silently with the sun, and creeped from his bedroom into the kitchen. He turned on the oven and put on some water for his oatmeal. He tried doing this as quietly as possible. He didn't want to wake her.

Tina had come a long way since first joining Jus Soli. She had also progressed like a real soldier should. War was hell, but it had changed her for the better. Since the attack that wiped out a majority of her unit, all remaining members of the Copperheads were split up. She was unsure about the others but she knew for sure that Masters had been transferred to a unit on the base, as for herself she got transferred to the Javelinas.

Working alongside the Colonel and the other Javalinas. After a while there was promotions, changes in duties, and more. Captain James stood with the Jus Soli Army, next to General Hollis as his aide and his love. After working close together as they had it was just too much to deny how she felt. Tina cared for him deeply, she loved him. Time off was spent together, and at least to her it was unsure if it was against the rules of fraternization or not but she didn’t care.

Tina laid in the bed and didn’t stir when he woke up and went to make his meal. After he had left for a little while she turned her body so she could hold onto him and get closer to Buford, only to find that he wasn’t there. Waking up and seeing that he was gone she sat up and quietly went into the kitchen. Wearing one of his oversized t-shirts and a pair of shorts she had brought with her the night before. The previous night was spent at his apartment where the two had dinner together and watched a movie.

She smiled and shook her head, staring at him in silence for a moment until she quietly approached him from behind and wrapped her arms around him. Resting her head on his back and closing her eyes as they stood there she sighed blithely. “One of these days I’m going to get you to sleep in with me.” Tina kept her smile and held on softly to him.

He felt a familiar presence press against his back. His... significant other was there. She was more than just the paltry implications that people brought to the world "girlfriend", but she wasn't his wife. Maybe he would marry her, once he resigned his commission, but that wasn't going to be today and it probably wasn't going to be tomorrow. He had more duties to his people, to his country than he could just walk away. Jus Soli may be strong, but they were a new nation and they could easily burn out if they weren't careful. If General Hollis gave it all up and went off to live alone with his wife, he wouldn't be the man that Tina fell in love with.

"Yeah, someday, hun," Buford said, smiling, "But you knew it wouldn't be today. I've got enough on my desk that I'm probably already late to start. Plus I got that meeting with Archbishop Krakowski and you know how quickly the Senyaka freeway gets backed up before the exit to Darwin's Cathedral." It wasn't the Cathedral's official name, but everyone called it that. It was, after all, a church full of genetically mutated individuals. That entire block was filled with churches and synagogues and mosques and temples. It was either the most holy few square miles of real estate in the New World, or it was an unspeakable abomination.

"You're going to have to sit in on the economic meeting with the treasury minister for me, hun," Buford said, rubbing his thumbs into his eyes. "You sleep well?"

He told her that someday he would sleep in with her, and she knew very well it wasn't going to be that day. As he repeated a part of his schedule to her she let go to stand next to him hopping up on the counter while saying, “I know your schedule sweetie, believe me I know it.” She smiled sweetly at him. When it was just them it was easy to forget that she was his personal aide and he was her boss. He told her about sitting in on a meeting and she nodded at him, “Sure thing, I'll get the notes to you later on in the day.”

Tina looked on as he rubbed his eyes and asked how she slept. “I slept okay. Could have dealt without the dream that I had but... not much you can do about dreams.” She paused for a moment before smiling at Buford and asking “How about you? How'd you sleep, babe?” It wasn't very often that she dreamed, and usually when she did it was of memories. Last nights' memory was of her parents. It was an accident what happened to them, she knew that, but it didn't make her feel any less guilty about it.

When she had dreams like that and was alone it took a few deep breaths and let the war just numb her from feeling anything from the dream. When she was with Buford though, she let herself feel the emotions that came with it, but it was easy to bare when he was there next to her. Tina loved him so much, and wanted to stay next to him. On occasion she considered an early retirement so they could stop hiding. But so much still needed to be done, and her dedication reached farther then any one else could provide.

Tina tucked a lock of her long brown hair behind her ear. “Don't worry about being late, I'll make sure you get out of here on time.” Time management, note taking, making sure he got to each appointment, and managing his schedule, those were just a few of the things she did for him and would keep doing for him even on off duty hours. There wasn't much she wouldn't do for Buford

JP between General Hollis and Captain James
The general breathed in deeply and let out a big sigh, "Eh, I think I'm still a bit jet-lagged from Islamabad." Hollis had acute reaction to jet-lag, at least when he wasn't the pilot. It was actually one of the things that Buford had missed from his days as a grunt, a rank-and-file. He had drivers, and pilots. Its why he was so militant about his leave time and his cars.

"You mind putting on the coffee? I'm going to go grab the paper."

Tina nodded and spoke, “Sure.” Hopping down from the counter she started to fix the coffee, making sure to make enough for the two of them. Reaching up to grab the coffee beans and pouring them into the coffee grinder. As it was doing that the dark haired Capitan grabbed a filter and stuck it in the coffee machine. Using the pot to pour the water and reaching for the ground up coffee beans. She pressed the on button for the machine and closed the top of it. Peering at the water boiling for his oatmeal she reached up again to grab some brown sugar and maple syrup to put a little bit of flavor in his oatmeal. Hoping to get his breakfast made before he came back and caught her in the act of adding to his oatmeal.

Buford wandered off in his pink fluffy slippers, something that he wished he could say that Tina had gotten him, but he was honestly not sure why he had them. He had had them for years, and while his mind was sharp as ever, little details like that weren't always readily available.

He had a nearly imperceptible camera set up, with 180 degrees range of motion so he could check that there was no one in the hallway when he opened the door. He was vulnerable to blackmail. He didn't want someone to glance inside the door and see Tina. He had also rented out the apartment below him, and had used his engineering skills to connect the two without any of his neighbors noticing. When Captain James left, she would be using an entirely different door.

Once he was sure that the coast was clear, he opened the door, and grabbed the newspaper on his mat. Superstes Daily wasn't the best newspaper in the world, but he liked doing the Jumble. He looked over the headlines, and saw that their treasurey minister said another dumbshit comment where microphones could hear him.

He glanced back and saw that Tina was adding in maple syrup to his oatmeal. "I'm going to need someone to test my food, aren't I?"

Letting out a small sound from being caught she quickly recovered with a small laugh. “No just giving it a little flavor. Trust me you'll love it. I had my oatmeal like this while growing up. I'm not putting in much I swear.” Now that Buford's breakfast was set up, it was time to fix hers. Which was usually toast and an apple. She kept her breakfast pretty light, only on days where she was really hungry she would make an egg or have a yogurt with her toast. But other then that, her morning meal was kept pretty light. Unless she sneaked a few bites from his plate.

"You know, its not like you have to worry about getting fat, Tina," Buford said, laughing. "I'm not going to allow it."

Laughing with him she retorted back, “Old grunt habit, sweetie.” Reaching into the fridge and grabbing her apple tossed it back and forth from one hand to another. “Next day we have off we should make french toast or something.”

"I'm making you a sausage omelette one of these days," Buford said, as he sat down, "It'll get you a heart attack but it'll be worth it." He swirled his oatmeal around with his spoon, and opened up his newspaper. Sighing, he figured he was going to hear all about the important stuff at work, he flipped to the sports section, and scanned for yesterday's score for the Royals. He may no longer be an American but that didn't change his allegiances when it came to sports. Oh, good the Suprestes Jaguars beat the Magda Eagles in cricket.

"Alright, I'm gonna eat, and then take a shower..." Buford said, winking, "Welcome to join me."

Tina laughed at his comment about the sausage omelet, “I am healthy as a horse you can't get rid of me that easily.” Once he sat down and started to flip through the paper she finished slicing her apple and placed it on a plate with her toast. Sitting next to him as he spoke about eating then taking a shower. “Ooooh, nice warm shower? Count me in.” Trying to hold back a wide smile she took a bite of her toast and snagged a small portion of the newspaper. Leaving the sports alone of course, that was Buford's section. She didn't much care for that part of the paper.

Buford started eating a lot quicker than he was before.
