March 2nd, 2010, evening [incidentally, the day before Kel's 20th birthday] Kelrian left the taxi after giving the man his money. Probably too much. He didn't care. He just wanted to get out of the cold. To stop thinking for a few moments. To forget about the past day for a few moments. He pressed the code to get in the gates, and attempted to appear semi-normal as he headed toward the dorms. He was chilled to the bone. No wonder; he'd left without a jacket, and his sneakers had been soaked through with slush. He was exhausted, mentally, emotionally, and physically, and utterly numb. It seemed like forever until he got to his room; he didn't turn on the lights, didn't say anything to his roommate or bother to check if he was there, just kicked his half-thawed sneakers off and struggled to get the wet socks off for a moment before crawling under the covers. It was good to be mostly dry, warm, and comfortable, after the day he'd had. Before long, he was asleep, for the first time in about three years. Kel hadn't found her, of course. He'd known, vaguely, that he'd been acting stupid. But he'd had to do something, had to look for her, no matter that it had been months since anyone had heard from her. Of course he'd had to get hysterical about it all and go off without a clue where to start.. -earlier that day- "You... mean she's not here?" an older blond man asked Kelrian with a strangely horrified expression. Marc Alther. His father, though he'd stopped acting like it a long time ago. They were standing several paces outside of the gates, by the man's car. It didn't sit well with Kel, not at all. Something was wrong, definitely wrong, and he was wishing he hadn't just eaten. His stomach was twisting itself in knots. If anything had happened to Luce.. "What do you mean?" Kel demanded, confused and angry. Why would Luce be at the mansion? "She's listened to you. We haven't talked in years. Why would she be here?" The worry on the man's face, fears confirmed. "How long has she been gone?" Just a few days. Say its just been the weekend, she's got to be with some friends... But Kel knew that wasn't going to be the case. Their distant father wouldn't be this troubled if she'd only been gone for a few days. He'd have checked friends houses.. "She's... the end of November. I was away for work for two weeks, and when I came back.. they said she came here," the man said, frowning. He'd believed his wife and daughter. He still had a hard time believing the mutant over them. "You're not hiding her from me, are you?" he demanded suddenly, with a similar expression to his son. They might loathe each other, but they were very alike in some ways. Just not the important ones. "NOVEMBER?!" It was a shriek, a scream, furious, frightened, outraged. He was speechless, almost, and pale with fury. It was possible he'd never been so angry in his life. "And you waited this long to check if she was- if they- SHE'S YOUR DAUGHTER- you- fucking idiot!" "Kel, you're- causing a scene-" And that was enough to make Kel hate him, utterly. So a few students were staring at him screaming at the man. His baby sister could be dead by now, didn't he know what the world was like. Luce couldn't- she shouldn't have to- go through what he'd gone through. Kel didn't realize he was shaking, that he was on the edge of tears. "That's all you ever cared about, wasn't it," he said, his voice strangely calm. "Go back to your perfect family." "Kel-" "I'll let you know if I find Luce, whether she's dead or alive." He stared at the older man, blue eyes colder than the irresponsible, negligent, excuse for a father had ever managed. Marc actually stepped back. "If anything happened to her- if I've lost another sister- its your fault. Just, leave." -several hours later- This. Was. Not. Happening. His baby sister was missing. Never mind that she was a mutant now too, and no longer his 'baby' sister as she was eighteen. She'd been missing for three months already and no one had seen fit to tell him. That she was a mutant or that she was missing. And as a mutant, she was going to be targeted. He had to find her. He'd been searching for several hours, he'd lost track of where he'd already been, for how long he'd been looking. Now he was just walking aimlessly, the blond young man looking something of a mess. Besides walking around New York City with a t-shirt and jeans, and slush soaked sneakers, without apparently noticing the cold, that was. The things he'd seen, that had happened... his younger sister was stronger than him, strong willed and tough as nails, but he was terrified for her. She had to be okay. He had to find her, and everything would be fine. She could come home with him and she could show off her new powers, and she'd settle in and plot to take over the world with Anne Lee and everything would normal. It couldn't be too late. Just, why hadn't she contacted him? Or the school, for that matter? What if she couldn't? He had to find her. If she was.. if anything had happened.. he would never forgive them. An hour after he'd fallen asleep, he tangled up in his blankets and sheets and fell off the bed. He let out an incoherent yelp and struggled with the sheets for a few moments in confusion. Was... where was he? Was it his room. Why was he on the floor? It took several moments for his confusion to dissipate, and memory of the day to return and make sense. "...... dammit," he said, staring up through the darkness at the ceiling. He was still somewhat cold, and felt odd. If he didn't know better, he'd think he'd gotten sick. In the morning, he'd see if there was anything he could do for his sister. At the moment, he couldn't bring himself to move an inch. He just felt lethargic. Drained. Useless. The regen half wanted to wake his roommate up, if he was there at least, but interrupted the catboy's sleep enough as it was on accident. What the hell was he supposed to do now? |
