March 12th 16:35 Another day just like any other at the Institute, nearly two weeks had passed since the self secluded Lucius Edwards had joined the school for mutants. Barely ever saying a word to anyone around him except one or two, like Chase or Mr. Summers, everyone else being avoided like the plague. The work that he was in charge of was much easier than his previous one, granting him too much free time that he used to work out or simply listen to some music in order to relax. It was both a curse and a blessing, he revelled in his job and responsibilities since it enabled him to become a sort of a ghost to the other residents. On the other hand however it also gave him too much free time where his feelings got in the way, making him become more and more isolated from everyone else. Every day he woke up earlier than he was supposed to in order to use the gym in the exterior buildings, or simply to wander around in order to get acquainted with his new surroundings. This had been one of his gym days, he felt too energetic which wasn’t something he particularly enjoyed, he knew what it could mean in the long run. Still it hadn’t been enough to satisfy his urge to get rid of all of that energy but it would have to wait, Luc was hungry. Shortly after the cafeteria was open and a few people were already going about to get to class, or do whatever they were supposed to around there he was already having his breakfast. For the first time ever he didn’t run back to the garage with his meal along with his lunch, even though he had no desire to speak to anyone he needed to at least see people around him. Seclusion wasn’t something he thoroughly enjoyed, it was simply his self defence mechanism that at times degraded his already impaired social skills. It was funny and shocking at the same time to see all of those people going about wherever they were supposed to. Some obviously mutants with their outwardly appearance clearly hinting that, despite that fact they were not ashamed in any sort of way and looked much happier with their ‘condition’ than he ever did. They couldn’t walk on the streets of any city without being noticed while he could, he could blend in and felt more embarrassed about his mutation than all of these people. At times Luc smiled to himself as these people walked by him, some noticing it and giving him a dirty look. He clearly didn’t care what they thought he was smiling about, most would assume he was mocking them in his mind but it wasn’t the case in any sort of way. Edwards was just amused at how he could be such a coward while they were brave enough to walk around like that, even if it was a mutant school. By the time he had finished his breakfast more and more people poured in, getting their meal and taking their seats. Once he saw that at his table was only him and all the others were getting full he felt it was time to go, good timing too in his mind as some students started to take a seat. Everyone was polite and nice which bothered him slightly, greeting him and trying to make him feel at home or something like that. All they got out of him was a nod and sometimes not even that, his reputation certainly wasn’t becoming very good with the others. As he walked through the halls in order to get outside and head out for his workplace people walked on by him. Most looked straight at him but he avoided even a simple eye contact, usually looking the opposite way as if he was checking out something else. Sometimes he could even overhear a few students that walked by him calling him an asshole and others things far worse than that. Luc couldn’t really blame them and he didn’t hold it against them neither despite his conflicting feelings towards himself and his own kind. At times this whole experience just felt like an awful waste of his time and Mr. Summers, the man who had welcomed him at the place that he ran even though he knew Lucius was a liability. And he truly felt like that, nothing more than a nuisance, not even being able to fit in such a place like this. One of the few places where he could truly be accepted by others despite him being a mutant, not even his father could do that and these people could, what a waste. Once he got to the garage everything went exactly as planned, nobody bothered him and everything was running fine. There had been no electrical problems or anything wrong with the machinery inside the institute so Edwards was able to hide there for quite some time. Everything however was taking a toll in his mind and his body, he felt stressed and angry at himself while his organism pleaded for exercise. Lucius still waited long enough in order to avoid the rush for lunch, everyone gathered and was nearly impossible for him to be left alone. A bit before the cafeteria was supposed to close he walked in and grabbed a slice of pizza and a sandwich, not much else was available. Like a starving refugee he garbled on his food as if there was no tomorrow, to anyone looking from the outside it was certainly a horrible spectacle. They didn’t know why he was doing it though, he needed to hurry. Running towards his room, avoiding and feinting anyone who was on the hallways like a wolf on the prowl. There was a rush of energy in his body and there was nothing more that he feared than that, he knew what it meant and he certainly wasn’t going to let that happen. There was no time for a shower, only to get out of his working clothes and get some trunks and a t-shirt. Once he was done with that he sprinted over to the window, looking down just to make sure no one was there and he wasn’t seen. Fortunately there was no one in the vicinity, at least that he could see, without thinking twice the Brit threw himself landing on the ground very awkwardly. He was trying to roll on the floor in order to get in a standing position, sort of like a somersault but all he managed was to land on his back. The loud thud could mean a world of pain for most others, Lucius felt nothing more than a sting. Standing up as quickly as he could he ran towards the forest ahead of him, where he hoped no one else would be. His stamina wasn’t the greatest in the world but it would have to do for today, after all he had worked out and jogged for a large part of his late youth. Edwards ran like a madman or as if something evil was after him and he needed to get away as far away as he could. He didn’t even care about the paths that he could see before him, instead running in a straight line through the forest, jumping over small boulders and even tearing a few tree branches. While his body could be incredibly hardy and difficult to harm his clothing wasn’t, after nearly four kilometres of running through the forest his t-shirt was torn in a few places. His trunks slashed on a few places with his skin appearing unharmed, which was quite odd to look at. Completely oblivious to the green scenery, accentuated by the sunlight peering from above the tree lines he continued to run. Not at the same pace as initially, he wasn’t accustomed to sprint for so long so after the first two kilometres his quickness was already decreasing considerably. By the end his breath was heavy and he nearly dragged himself forward, holding onto the trees next to him and forcing his body to do that extra effort. Edwards didn’t see anything before him, it was like a haze in his eyes alone since it was still bright and clear. When he finally fell to his knees gasping for air, his hands touching the forest floor he felt it was enough. He still felt he had more in him but he couldn’t get it out, he would never do it, he couldn’t get rid of his mutation. Mr. Summers had said so himself and for once he believed him. With his mind a bit clearer now he looked on ahead, a beautiful waterfall just before him. Luc couldn’t believe he hadn’t seen it before, he was in a worse shape than he thought. “I’m going crazy...” he bellowed under his breath, not even noticing all of his clothes virtually destroyed, with all the scratches and slashes they had. |

Be it a gift or a curse, Doug Ramsey was a very perceptive individual. He paid very close attention to...well, everything. So to say that he noticed something strange going on with a particular person was anything but out of the ordinary. Sometimes he would notice certain adolescents and the way they hung their head and the particular slope of their shoulders was all but broadcasting a broken heart. Whenever propriety allowed he was there for them to some degree. Things of this nature seemed to happen on practically a daily basis, so when he saw the young man acting strangely he didn't think too much of it...at first. But something was itching at the back of his mind and no matter how hard he tried to dispel it the thought simply would not leave. And so he followed the young man. At a distance. Inconspicuously. He knew he was pulling the perfect tail, and the longer he followed the young man the more his suspicions and curiosity were piqued. Next thing he knew they were heading outside and the young man broke out into what seemed like a panicked sprint that led right into the forest. Caution urged Doug to get some help. Curiosity led him on and as quickly as he could muster he followed the trail into the woods and toward the waterfall. There stood the young man, wearing tattered clothes and out of breath. Doug, himself also winded, paused a moment as he looked at the young man. "Is...everything okay?" |

The waterfall was a wondrous sight to behold, come to think of it Lucius had actually never seen such a thing. Not even at home, he was after all a man used to the city, being in pure and raw nature was completely different for him. The sunlight glistened on the water as it fell down, sparkling and foaming as it hit the pond beneath it. The sound it made was almost soothing, unlike anything he had ever heard before, such a place was a marvel. For a few moments his mind cleared and he could almost see what had happened the day before crystal clear in his head. The way he reacted to McCoy’s appearance had shamed him then and it shamed him now but it wasn’t about the way he acted himself. Never before had he tried putting himself on another man’s shoes and now it was almost as if it was meant to be. What would it feel like if he was thrown that very same look he gave, what manner of feelings would be crawling underneath his skin as someone judged him on his appearance alone. Luc hadn’t meant to hurt anyone, truth be told deep within his psyche he knew that was why he pushed people away. But no matter how much he tried, he kept hurting them no matter how much he kept on doing whatever the hell he did. Lucius had no idea what Dr. McCoy had felt in that instance, on the very first time they met. Only when he thought of his father did he understand a little bit of what it must have been like, that last time they had been together. Marc Edwards had forsaken his son, wishing he’d never see him again and in some manner he did the same to others unwillingly, unknowingly. A son does not have to walk down the same path as his forefathers, he can choose another way or at least try. The moment that thought ran through his head he laughed faintly, still slightly out of breath. It was only when he heard a voice that his mind snapped back to reality, back from the light and into the gray world he was meant to live in. “Stay back!” he said as loud as he could in a bit of a panic, with his right arm stretched up high. “I don’t know if it’s over yet...” Luc stated trying to take a seat in the gravelly floor, he hadn’t even seen who it was who had spoken. The moment he felt more comfortable he tried to see who it was, narrowing his eyes in an effort to clear out his blurry vision. It was a man, that much he could tell but he was having trouble focusing on him, not really sure where he even was. “I apologize...I didn’t mean to scare you but if something happens with me, just run...” Edwards whispered and tried to gesture he meant no harm. His body ached but the pain was diminishing slightly, perhaps this wouldn’t be one of those days after all. Instinctively Luc started to take deep breaths to calm himself, hoping it would somehow help him not go through one of his outbreaks. “I am all right, I think. I believe it’s going away, sorry about that,” he added right before letting himself fall flat on the floor. “Why did you follow me?” he asked almost innocently. |

“Stay back!” Doug stopped dead in his tracks at the clear warning in the young man's tone. He looked at him carefully, not seeing any visible signs of malicious intent in his facial features or posture. But the warning was clear enough. Doug stayed his ground. “I don’t know if it’s over yet...” And then it was all perfectly clear. Xavier's Institute was a school that taught people how to use a variety of gifts. It was quite possibly the singularly most dangerous place to live in the world for that reason. Whoever this gentleman was, he was obviously experiencing a problem with his powers. Whatever they were. “I apologize...I didn’t mean to scare you but if something happens with me, just run...” Doug reached into his pocket to retrieve his cell phone. Back up was definitely needed here. "It's okay," he said calmly as he thought about what Professor Xavier might say in this situation. "Just take a deep breath and calm down. A lot of times a power is linked to a person's emotional state. Clear your mind. I'm here to help. I'll walk you through it." Holding his cell phone, Doug watched as the man took a few deep breaths and seemed to calm down just a little bit. "My name is Doug Ramsey," he said in a soothing voice. "I've been with the school for...well, a long time." Doug smiled. "Trust me, I've seen this sort of thing a lot and things are going to be all right. "And look, I was following you because you were acting...unusual. I tend to spot things that sometimes people overlook. It's all part of my gift." Doug looked him over carefully as he weighed whether he should call for help right now or not. "So...what's your name and...if you are able...try to explain what you think happened?" |

Looking straight up he could see the faint light entering the tree tops, it almost seemed to have a mind of its own as a slight breeze made the branches move. Edwards was marvelled, almost at peace despite his pain that was slowly fading away. The long sprint seemed to have done the trick but what if it hadn’t? That question lingered in his head taking that small measurement of peace away with it. Whoever it was he certainly knew what he was doing, having guided him along the calming process. If he hadn’t been there Luc wasn’t so sure he would have been able to calm himself down quickly enough to avoid his most nightmarish thoughts come to fruition. So his name was Doug Ramsey, the mechanic didn’t quite remember that name no matter how much he tried to. Luc hadn’t looked at him so far, trying to steady his breathing while enjoying the sight above him. Doing as he was told for once, now more than ever he clearly needed that. Would really everything be all right? Even after learning of the nature of this whole episode? The dangers that it posed to him and most importantly to others, some of them being children was too grave to ignore at least in his mind. For the first time Lucius hadn’t thought about himself first but of the students, of what could happen if he hadn’t run away. Whenever he considered his mutant status he only viewed it as something shameful to him, afraid that if by having an outbreak he would be seen for what he was. But what of others that were close to him at that time? His trail of thought was incessant and rapid but Doug cut it short as he explained exactly why he had chose to follow him into the woods. His gift had led him there, it had avoided a possible dangerous situation just by using it. This mention made the Brit wonder about things and as he heard it he tried to slowly get into a seating position, he was after all still a bit worn down. “I’m Lucius,” he stated a bit confused at everything that had happened. “Thank you for helping me, I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t,” he added absently staring into a grand void in front of him still not looking at Doug. “Whenever I feel too much energy in me I know something bad might happen, I don’t know why...” his head cocked a little to the right as he said this. “If I don’t exercise regularly or blow off this anxiety I feel, things just go wrong. The first time that it happened was back at my parent’s home, I don’t remember anything besides the pain and the heat in my body,” Luc told the man and brought his hand to clean up a bit of sweat on his face. “Everything was a wreak, as if I had lost my mind and destroyed everything I laid my hands on. Thank God I was alone that day, I don’t know what could have happened if they were there, if anyone was there with me,” his voice filled with sorrow but mostly regret and shame for thinking of that moment as horrible for him for being discovered. Never fully realizing how much worse it could have been if his family was there, or anyone else for that matter. “I’m a danger to everyone else here...” his eyes wide in shock as the thought crossed his mind. |

Doug listened compassionately but didn't say a single word until Lucius was finished. Watching the range of emotions that the distraught young man wore openly Doug saw the whole story. It was a story that he'd seen so many times that he unfortunately knew it by heart. Shame plagued Lucius. He was both ashamed and terrified of what and who he was. Especially those that just stepped in from society's doorstep had a deeply instilled notion that their genetic makeup was little more than a disease. This false ideology led to a variety of mental disorders ranging from simply neurotic to paranoid delusional. Lucius seemed to be somewhere in between if Doug was going to give an off the cuff appraisal. For the time being, however he withheld any such judgments and simply listened. "You've been through a lot," Doug admitted as he inspected a moss covered log as a potential seat while they talked. Taking out a small white handkerchief he brushed off a small clump of weeds and moss, making a little scowl of distaste despite himself as he did so. Doug wasn't exactly in his element here. Nevertheless he took a seat and refocused his attention on Lucius. "Energy," he said thoughtfully as he looked the young man over. "You said sometimes you have some kind of inner...barometer that lets you know that you're peaking on some kind of energy." Interesting. Energy had to come from somewhere. Either it was the burrito he had for lunch, or he was absorbing some kind of energy from another source. Doug put a hand to his chin as he thought about it. "Are there certain times that this energy seems to be more prevalent?" |

For the first time his eyes drifted towards the one that had followed him after he spoke to him, once more breaking his line of thought. He didn’t seem that older than him, in fact he appeared to be the same age maybe a little less. It didn’t really matter and for a while Luc just stood and stared at Doug while he was trying to brush off the weeds and the moss of a small log. As the man’s face twitched in disgust at what he was doing the Brit laughed out loud, amused by the sight. Edwards remained with a smile on his face, not of mockery but of simplicity at it’s highest. Even though he felt ashamed, Ramsey’s presence and way of talking had settled him down quite a bit. Even though he looked pretty fit, he seemed more of the nerdy type than what he was expecting although the way that he spoke matched someone of a high intellect. Lucius was one to measure people by their appearances, that was what he was taught while with his family but then again ever since he got here he started to learn that there was always more than meets the eye about the residents at the school. For some odd reason he liked Doug, probably for what he had done for him, after all actions always spoke louder than words. The moment he started to speak again after taking his seat however, Luc’s face returned to his serious semblance considering what he was saying. He was right, Edwards had always been able to tell when one of this episodes could happen even though when the signs started to show it could already be too late. While Doug placed a hand on his chin, Luc could see that he was in deep thought regarding this matter. His question seemed rather valid in his eyes and for whatever reason he had never actually thought too much about that particular thing about his mutation. “It depends, I think. Usually during the day it’s when this sort of thing happens, actually the first time it happened I remember it was a beautiful sunny day back at home. Not many of those from where I hail from, I’ll tell you that,” he stated almost instinctively. “At night I sleep all right, this feeling I have it’s not as strong as during the day I suppose. But when I wake up it’s a bit stronger so I have to take care of it somehow, lately though it has been harder,” his voice in a monotonic tone trying to figure out how to best explain what he felt. “Ever since I got to America, I’ve had to work a whole lot harder to get rid of it, the weather is not like in London...It’s much sunnier than I thought,” his face twitching a bit as he considered this fact. |

This was good. He was getting Lucius to relax long enough to be introspective and really think about his nature and powers. It was really the polar opposite of being emotionally reactionary to the situation and letting imagination and unbridled feeling run him amock. And the difference showed on his face fairly clearly. The deep creases between his eyes softened and almost disappeared completely as Lucius thought the questions over carefully. As Doug listened to him he started to draw some pretty specific parallels. Nothing concrete just yet, but it was leading him down a path that he more or less suspected it would. "Sounds like we're up against the old laws of thermodynamics again," Doug said with a wry little grin. "They're pesky, but fairly immutable." A small squirrel bounced through the undergrowth, disappearing into a tangle of evergreen trees nearby. Doug kept a close eye on it, not necessarily out of worry, but just to make sure it didn't...mistake him for a nut or something. The trees were still mostly bare in this neck of the woods, extending the line of sight to a considerable distance between the naked branches. Here and there stood a thick bushy evergreen. Doug mused that they almost seemed to be wearing fur coats. Fir coats. Okay, Doug...focus... "Thermodynamics is actually the study of energy. The first law says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It just more or less...changes states." Doug pointed up at the sun through the barren branches. "From what you described to me it sounds like that big burning ball of hydrogen and helium known as the sun provides you an abundance of energy on a constant basis." Doug looked back down at him. "It might be that you're more less a battery, receiving your energy from the sun in a way that exceeds that which every other living thing does. I'm just speculating here...but if that's true, I wonder what is making you...overload." This wasn't exactly his area of specialty, but it was too fascinating not to delve into. |

In a deep contemplative line of thought, Lucius wondered about the specifics of his mutation like Doug had asked previously. Truth be told he had never thought much about it, usually trying to avoid to do that as if it would somehow make it go away. Alas it would never do that, although he had a feeling a long time ago it wouldn’t. All he truly knew was that bad things could happen if he didn’t work out as much as he could in order to get rid of all of those sensations he felt. When Ramsey spoke the Brit turned his full attention to him once again, talking about science for what it seemed. Edwards noticed something bouncing around after his friendly pursuer looked straight at it, he couldn’t quite tell what it was but it seemed it had caught Doug’s attention. He seemed unusually wary of being where they were, as if it was something that bothered him. As he spoke again, pointing upwards up to the glowing orb that was the sun Luc instinctively looked up. Could he be right? The Brit’s face frowned at the thought, if that was truly the case then that could be a big problem to say the least. They had just gone through winter and things had been difficult for him already, during summer time he had no idea what would happen. A bit of worry came back to him, rushing through his body and cursing through his veins. His face clearly hinted this troubled him as he looked at the man before him. “Now that can be a bit of a problem,” he ushered to Doug in his thick accent. “Perhaps we should go back? You don’t seem particularly comfortable here from what I can see,” Luc added shortly afterwards, slowly getting up as he did. He felt much better now, more at peace with himself. The rush of adrenaline he had felt moments prior was gone and for that he had this man to thank for. There was of course the problem of his tattered clothes but there wasn’t much to be done about that, hopefully not many people would notice it, or at least he hoped. “Thank you, Doug,” Luc said to the man adding a nod to it as he waited for him. |

As Lucius considered what was being said, Doug thought he detected a hint of anxiety in his eyes. There was definitely a moment when his eyes flicked to the sun with apprehension just before he stated that there could be a little bit of a problem, most likely due to the fact that they were embarking on the sunny season. Ignoring for the time being the young man's urgency to get going, as well as his own discomfort with his surroundings, Doug smiled a little. "Is it that obvious? Yeah, I'm a little out of my element here. I never really was into the....outdoorsy thing. "But look, there's nothing to be too upset about. Professor Xavier has been doing this for a very long time, and he's encountered numerous different students with a wide range of abilities...many of which had no ultimate control over their powers when they met him." Doug spread his hands. "And we're all still here. It's going to be fine." A thought occurred to him. "You might also talk to Dr. Grey and Dr. McCoy, they practically live in the lab and have studied the genetics behind our powers for years." Hopefully this was having some kind of impact. "And I'm always available too. If I'm not in the Language Arts classroom, you can probably find me in my room." Or the Danger Room, but Doug left that part off. "So..." he said, changing the subject a little. "Tell me a little about yourself. I'm pretty good with accents," he said with a wagging finger as he tried to place where he'd heard it before. It sounded more or less like a straightforward British accent. "My guess is London?" It was hard to tell exactly where someone was from other than the fact that some sayings were different and sometimes the farther north or south you travelled the accents became thicker. London was actually a pretty safe guess. |

What an odd young man that this Doug Ramsey was, more concerned about someone else than he himself. Luc wasn’t very familiar with those kinds of people in any way. As he responded with a smile stating the obvious Edwards couldn’t help but smile back at him. The Brit could tell he was being truthful or at least he seemed to be in his eyes. With his hands on his waist he stayed motionless just hearing Doug out, he really seemed like the talkative sort, much unlike himself. Hopefully he was right and everything would be fine, although from his past experience things had a way to make a bad turn very quickly. “Me and Dr. McCoy having a nice little chit chat? I don’t think that will happen for a while mate,” he replied almost instantly at Doug’s mention of the scientist. A small embarrassed smile came to his face while he made a motion with his hand clearly hinting that was a no go. “Let’s just say our first meet was rather displeasing to us both...” Luc stated clearly ashamed for what had happened between them. “I’ll probably take you up on that offer though, Doug. I could use someone to talk to every now and again,” Edwards added with a respectful nod. When Ramsey changed the topic though it brought a faint smile to Luc’s face as he guessed from where he was. “Is it that obvious?” he asked jokingly remembering what Doug had said previously. “Yes, I hail from London. Born and raised there, came here after it was nearly obliterated a while back,” Luc answered with his face clouded with emotion, remembering small bits of that dreadful night. “Look, you’ve been here for a while now so I guess I could ask you, just what the hell happened back then over in London? I mean, the living dead?” Edwards asked squatting down and frowning. |

“Let’s just say our first meet was rather displeasing to us both...” Doug thought about what that implied for a moment, and could only ultimately come up with one conclusion. "Well, usually the first meeting with Dr. McCoy is the most surprising one," he said with a smile. "But I think you'll find that he's an extremely forgiving and tolerant man. And believe me, he's seen it all." Doug shrugged. "Besides, you can't escape it, sooner or later you're going to have to spend some time with him." He was one of the doctors of the school, after all. Lucius did not hesitate in taking Doug up on the offer to meet with him, however. Then the conversation trailed off to London, and Doug saw the unmistakable homesickness painted clearly on the young man's face. “Look, you’ve been here for a while now so I guess I could ask you, just what the hell happened back then over in London? I mean, the living dead?” Despite himself, and the gravity of the subject, Doug found himself smiling. "Now that is a long story." He stood up and brushed himself off a little. "Bottom line is we live in a very different world than the last generations. There are great forces out there and all of them are bent on shaping the world to their own whims." Doug thought about it for a moment. "And maybe...just maybe, we were born to be the equilizors." He shrugged again. "Come on," he said looking around at the trees. "This place is sort of giving me the creeps after all." There were just far too many creepy crawlies in the woods for his liking. |

A chuckle was all that escaped Luc’s mouth as he heard Doug talk about Dr. McCoy, he wasn’t so sure about that but it didn’t matter. He was right though, sooner or later they’d probably have to interact with one another again, Edwards just hoped he wouldn’t wince like a little girl like before. Lucius kept a faint smile on his face as he considered it, not really knowing what would happen on that day. He was still squeamish about all of this and it would definitely take some time before he could fully accept everything about him and others. Something he wasn’t quite expecting however was the reaction he got out of Ramsey as he asked about London. It was as if it was something that happened every day, either that or it was simply his way of dealing with things. The latest was the most reasonable to assume to the Brit but as he continued his line of thought, Luc wasn’t so sure anymore. “A different world...” he thought to himself. “You really believe that don’t you? That we’re here to even things out. That’s an interesting way of thinking, I’ll give you that,” Luc said as he started to walk with Doug. Who knows, perhaps he was actually right. Fin |
