Time of day: uh, none Place in the time-line: from 2003-present. Sometimes, she dreamed about that night. It wasn't a pleasant night, even if nothing had happened that evening, it would have been notable for how hot and sticky it was. Kentucky was in the middle of a hot snap, and Paige remembered that she went to bed in just a t-shirt on, instead of sweltering in pajamas. But something did happen that night. They came for Sam, and they weren't happy. Paige didn't really understand what was going on, but Mama told them all to get into the barn, while she tried to talk to their neighbors, make them see reason. The next thing that Paige remembers is the hay catching fire, and the support beams cracking and breaking. It was hot, so very hot. There was screaming, and Paige didn't know if it was hers, or her siblings or the mob around her. She could feel her skin bubbling and melting and burning. Oh God in heaven, the pain. She would have died, no, she should have died. Why didn't she die? The pain of the fire was the last thing that Paige ever felt. Beneath the layer of skin, she had another, a layer of metal, of iron. Her brother was able to pull her out of the fire, and fly her into the sky. They landed out in the forests, near enough the highway. He flew so hard and so fast, and she was so heavy that she could have sworn he was going to die too. She found water, and made him drink. For weeks, they were out and alone. He felt cold, and she felt nothing, except what was inside of her. Sam had started to get sick, and Paige was desperate when help finally came. She didn't know how he found them, but he told them that everything was going to be alright. He was handsome, but he had an odd name. He called himself Inferno, which obviously wasn't his Christian name. He took them south, further south than Paige had ever dreamt of going. (She, after all, had always planned on moving north to New York.) He made sure that Sam got over the flu, which he might not have if all the two siblings had were berries and whatever food they could sneak from people's smokehouses. He even helped them get jobs and education. Sam became a cop, and Paige was just starting her new job as a nurse. Paige decided to get a new name as well. She was Iron Maiden. She was still the burnt black iron that she was that night on Guthrie farms. The burn marks from the fire were still there, no matter how hard anyone tried to burnish them off. |
