28th March, 2010.
4 Pm.

Time had passed quickly at the school’s premises for Lucius who was still finding it hard to readjust to his new surroundings. Barely a month had passed and he could actually say he was making some progress with his line of thinking regarding mutants and himself, although slow as it was being. There was no rush as far as he was concerned, better slow and steady than rushed and sloppy in his mind. Things weren’t as appalling as they once were, the most obvious physical mutations didn’t scare him as much as they once did nor did they freak him out. It was becoming more and more usual to see people with wings, odd colours or other unusual traits in their appearance, even though he still kept some distance from them.

Staring into the Breakstone Lake, the Brit was calm and peaceful as he hadn’t for a long while. This was much better than home, surely beating the sight of the Thames with all of its greenery setting around it. Of course it wasn’t as green as it would be sooner or later but the seasons were quite off as of late, with the four seasons increasingly becoming more unpredictable. But for all accounts it seemed that the green was returning to the nature around the Xavier’s mansion much for the delight of Edwards. There was a cold whisper from the wind, still reminding the residents that winter hadn’t fully gone away but that only made Luc remind home a bit more.

Feeling jolly Lucius picked up a few pebbles from the ground while he walked around trying to find the best ones he could see. A smile was plastered on his face, after all he didn’t quite remember the last time he had done what he was about to do. Taking as many small rocks as he could find and placing them on his jean’s pockets he pulled the underside of his pants up since he wanted to feel the cold water on his feet. Sure it was chilly but for him it was very much like home was, not even bothering with bringing his jacket, just his gray shirt. As the feeling of the water on his feet started to spread through his whole body he shivered but laughed slightly. His shoes left behind on the floor so that they wouldn’t get wet.

On a Sunday quite like this there wasn’t much to do and even a mechanic needed a break every once in a while. Despite that he had made sure everything was in check before he left the mansion, looking after the student’s cars and vehicles and storing all of his tools. As he took one of the pebbles from his pocket a thought raced to his head that had been there for a while now. He didn’t remember seeing Mr. Summers for quite some time, he could see that the other staff members were preoccupied with him but he had no idea why. After all, with his social skills it wasn’t as if anyone would go running at him and telling him what was going on, his time at the Institute was too short to be fully trusted. That’s what he kept telling himself over and over again, perhaps with time he would grow to trust the people at the school and they him. Something however warned him that this could take quite a while.

The sun was slightly obscured by a cloudy sky, not completely but just enough that the British man was comfortable in being there. Looking on ahead he grabbed the small rock in his hand and threw it towards the lake, making it splash on the surface a few times. Four times in total, not bad for someone without practice although Luc knew he could do more but something held him back as always. One of the things that had made him join this people at the school was the promise that he would come to learn about his abilities but as of yet he hadn’t done anything regarding that department. Another thing that constantly haunted him, the fear of the unknown, just how strong was he? How much could he take before feeling excruciating pain like he felt when he was a boy or when his body started to ache for the build-up of energies to be released. All of this was in his head at the same time but the frightening sensation wasn’t as powerful as it once had been, he didn’t even bother to look around, completely oblivious to everything aside from his little world.

This damn Ruby thing had Rahne frustrated. Nothing about it made sense, it was all... she couldn't even find the words to describe exactly what it was, aside from frustrating. Scott Summers was someone she had looked up to for a long time, had cared about, and now he was someone else and nobody could figure out why. Who was this Ruby and where was the real Scott Summers? And who was making Ruby take his place like this?

When Rahne Sinclair was frustrated, especially these days, she went out and burned off energy with a run as a wolf. Her classes were done and taught, she had no obligations at the moment, so now was a good wolf run. It was a bit late in the day for her to do so, as she usually did one run in the morning with Dani and then one at night with Jack, but mid-afternoon wasn't really common.

She pounded her way along her little pre-set course, from the rear porch around the gardens, out to the forest, around towards the lake, with a small satchel around her neck with her clothes inside so she could change back at any moment and not have to walk around nude. As a full wolf like she was, it wasn't a big deal, and would probably be stranger if she was dressed. But if she shifted to a humanoid form, she needed some clothes, so she was ready.

She skidded to a stop as she approached the lake, surprised to see the mansion's most current adult guest just sitting there. She turned around quickly, and hid behind the boathouse, shifting back into a human and quickly getting dressed.

"Sorry," she said as she came back into view, now dressed in a white t-shirt and red gym shorts. "Dinnae mean t' interrupt ye, sir. Everything's alright?"

She couldn't recall his name offhand, but as usual, it was embarrassing to admit that, so she passed it off and hoped that he'd find a way to introduce himself and not put her on the spot.

Deep in his thoughts Lucius kept throwing the pebbles towards the surface of the lake, making them bounce off it several times. It was rather peaceful with no one around, in the summer however it should be pretty crowded, after all Americans did like their water sports. Edwards was really distracted, not knowing that someone was actually closer than he thought. When he heard an unfamiliar voice call out to him he instantly turned to see who it was. There was a semblance of curiosity plastered all over his face, not quite knowing who it was. Then again, he hardly knew anyone despite the amount of time that he had been there already.

A young woman by all accounts from what he could discern from her face and features, dressed as if she was out for a jog. Her accent was disconcerting, there were more people from the United Kingdom here than he had first imagined. Luc tilted his head at that thought with a faint smirk considering this.

“I believe it is but thank you for the concern,” he replied a bit flustered for not noticing her earlier coming his way. Edwards didn’t like to be surprised and it seemed that here there were surprises around every corner.

For a split second he knew that he had seen her somewhere before back at the mansion but she didn’t seem like one of the students to him. The way she walked and talked despite her youthful appearance was not quite like them, then again it could be because of her upbringing.

“Where are my manners? I’m Lucius, it’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Ms?” he introduced himself, letting the last word linger a bit more just to see if she would fill it out herself with his right hand held forward for a possible handshake.

“By the way, you are not from around here, are you? Because I could swear that’s a Scottish accent,” he added shortly afterwards as nicely as he could, although it did seem quite forced. His mannerisms and facial features clearly hinted his discomfort, it wasn’t that he wanted her gone, it was just that he knew his social skills were absolute rubbish and that made him even more uncomfortable around others.

"Name's Sinclair, Rahne Sinclair," she answered, not even thinking about the Connery Bond-esque sound of it due to her Scottish accent. She met the handshake with what may have been a surprising bit of strength considering her overall petite frame. "I teach the wee ones."

She tilted her head to the left a bit with a small smile upon his guess of her nationality.
"Aye, ye'd be correct on that one. London, yuirself? I love London. I'd like t' go again someday, ye know, an' not 'cause there's a zombie apocalypse what needs fightin' off. F'r regular reasons."

He didn't seem all too well at ease, almost nervous, or perhaps even afraid. As far as Rahne was concerned, she was old hand with socially awkward people. Hell, her boyfriend was socially awkward and she managed to get him to open up pretty well.

"I'd love t' go to Abbey Road. Take a tour o' the studio, take a photograph like the album cover... o' course, I'd need three others with me, but I'm sure I can find a few folks willin' to come along."

The strategy was simple, talk about something inane, something that didn't really have anything to do with anything at all. Just small talk.

A smile ran across Luc’s face as Rahne introduced herself, it was after all a very thick Scottish accent she had there. Despite the time she had probably been there it hadn’t been tainted by the more casual American’s way of talking. She was in quite a bit of shape, that much he could tell from her firm grip on his hand. When she shook his hand his eyes narrowed slightly wondering what was behind that apparent innocence and politeness, there was something about her that was odd. Those thoughts were quickly put behind them as she continued to speak however.

“Quite right, I hail from London,” he responded as she made a guess of her own but at the moment she mentioned the zombies all he could muster was a very weak smile. “That would be a nice change of pace, wouldn’t it, Ms Sinclair?”

A chuckle came from him as she started to talk about Abbey Road and taking a photo there, he hadn’t thought of that place for a long while. “Yes, I do believe you wouldn’t have much trouble in finding people interested in doing something of the sort,” he stated instinctively. “Abbey Road is also in a better shape than most of the rest, so that’s a fine choice indeed,” Luc added shortly afterwards.

“But Scotland also has its appeals, I’ve always wanted to visit Edinburgh but the opportunity never arose,” Edwards said to the petite woman. “Especially the Old Town as they call it, quite different than most things you see out there. Nothing like New York with all its skyscrapers and modern architecture,” he said as he took another pebble and tossed it over to the surface of the lake bouncing over it a few times. “Care to have a go, Ms Sinclair?” Luc asked while holding out a small rock in his hand. He was actually curious to see just how strong she was.

"Aye, it absolutely would," she said with a small nod of her head. "Travelling the world without havin' to save it... that'd be somethin'."

She shrugged her shoulders, nodding her head a bit. "Well, I will admit t' bein' absolutely enamored of The Beatles. Mum has the records an' I grew up listening to 'em on her old turntable. Of course, I had t' grab up my own copies once those remasters hit the stores last year. Spent a good chunk o' my pay on that, but it was worth every penny. 'Cept for Revolution 9 on the White Album. That song, if ye can call it that, is eight some minutes I'll never have back."

She paused a moment as he mentioned Edinburgh.
"Ye know? I have never been there. Spent most o' my time on Muir Island, an' vacations were usually spent gettin' out o' Scotland proper. Think I'll have to add that one to the list."

She and Doug were still talking about taking a trip out to Scotland if and when they had some free time, and depending on whether or not the world needed saving at the time.

"So... how's yuir time with us been so far? Everythin's workin' out f'r ye?"

Strange...For what it seemed they were much more involved in the affairs of the world than he had imagined. Personally he had never heard much about them, he knew that had been mutants who had saved mankind but to be with them and know them was something else entirely. The way she spoke about it, with such certainty and posture made him shiver slightly. But the conversation shifted once again very rapidly, with Rahne talking about the Beatles and how one of their songs had been an absolute waste of her time.

“At least now you know what to avoid, don’t you?” he said rather amused with a chuckle.

But for a Scottish not to have been in their capital city was an interesting thing indeed, along with the mention of Muir Island it struck a chord in Lucius mind. He had no idea where this island was but the way she spoke of it made it sound intriguing in his mind. But looking at his hand stretched out and not having the stone being picked up from it made him frown a bit. Why had she avoided that? He had no idea but he wouldn’t insist on it.

“Maybe another time,” Luc said with a faint smile on his face while withdrawing his hand and considering very carefully how to respond to her question. “That’s something that not even I know to be perfectly honest...” he said sincerely.

Looking on to the lake with an introspective look in his eyes he continued to speak, “I’ve been experiencing a few adjustment problems, I suppose. I ‘m not comfortable around people, let alone mutants, you know what I mean, Ms Sinclair?”

Shifting his gaze to her once again he tilted his head to his left with a serious look in his face. “Let’s just say that I was raised to be wary of our kind, I think that suffices pretty well my problems here,” Edwards stated respectfully. “But and how about you? How long have you been here, Ms Sinclair?”

"Aye, I do," Rahne said with a sharp nod of her head and a smile. She wanted to say something like "see? It's not so bad talking, is it?" but she didn't. That would probably have made him feel bad.

"Aye, another time indeed," she answered, looking out to see if there was something in particular he was looking at. Not seeing anything in particular, she looked back to him.

"I understand a wee bit of awkwardness, but it truly is a shame ye were raised with such a viewpoint. I hope we've helped to change that view, nae just f'r us, but f'r yuir own sake as well. Must be terrible t' be brought up t' be wary of yuir own people... yuir own self, really. Everybody should be able to trust themselves."

Then the question was foisted upon her.
"Oh, well, I'm almost at m' two year mark in the states here, but I've kind of always had a relationship with Xavier's. The Professor used t' date my mum, an' he'd come visit with the X-Men every once in a while. It helped in finally coming here when the Research Centre was closed, as it really felt more like comin' to a second home than comin' to someplace new."

Every time that he had opened up to anyone at the mansion he ended up discovering that they weren’t the bogeyman’s that they had been described throughout his life. It was strange to see that they were so very much like regular humans, just like his brother had tried to tell him for so long. He knew his parents were wrong in their opinion, most likely because they had never met mutants up close. They didn’t have the opportunity that he was having, which was strange and at the same time liberating.

She was quite right in what she said, he had sacrificed most of his life because of what he had been taught to believe. He simply nodded to her statements, fully realizing their validity to his situation and to so many others like him most likely. Edwards wasn’t stupid enough to believe he was the only one in his predicament, this was a conundrum that wasn’t his alone at all.

Rahne had been in the States for quite a while, probably had seen things that Luc didn’t even imagine. After all in the short time that he had spent at the school he had seen things he never expected to see in his life. Much had been said and much he had heard about the Professor but up until now he still hadn’t met him, at times he wondered what kind of man he could be to erect such an establishment and help so many like him.

“Sounds like quite a man...” he replied in a very low tone. “But from the looks of it he’s not in charge anymore per say, Mr. Summers is. Why is that?” Luc asked innocently. “And if you don’t mind me asking, what happened with him? I haven’t seen him for a long while, odd really,” Edwards added in an heartbeat.

"Oh, he is," Rahne said with a small smile.

"Though t' be honest, f'r the longest time, I kinda saw him as little more 'n my mum's boyfriend, right? But I was a wee young pup," she said without even thinking that it might be considered strange that she'd refer to herself as a 'pup', "an' was more interested in the young superheroes Xavier brought with him than the man himself. The things he's managed t' put together here, an' the fact that it not only carried on in his absence, but thrived and grew, is a testament t' just how... big a man he was... is, really, and just what he's meant to all of us."

Rahne's smile fell a bit when Lucius mentioned Scott. This whole Ruby thing, as was mentioned before, had not been easy on those close to Scott Summers.
"Oh, well, that's a few stories there. The Professor'd gone missing some time back, presumed dead, but he's recently come back and is still... adjusting to being amongst the livin' again."

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "An' as f'r Mister Summers... let's just say he's been feelin' a wee bit under the weather of late. He's been gettin' his fair share of rest, though. Should be right as rain soon enough."

The petite woman seemed rather relaxed, smiling quite a few times as she talked with Lucius. Not long ago he would have either ignored her or try to somehow get away from her but now he couldn’t quite get why he would do that. It wasn’t as if she would bite him, wasn’t it? For the second time referring to Professor Xavier as his mother’s boyfriend which seemed rather normal for him but when she said pup a surprised look came to his face. It seemed a bit strange to refer to one self as a pup to him but he preferred not to ask about it and just let her continue to speak.

It was confusing to hear her talk about the man in the past and present tense, as if somehow he had pulled a Jesus Christ on them and resurrected from the dead. Still, he remained quiet and said nothing about it, surely there was a lot that he wasn’t supposed to know and he wasn’t about to question people about it. As she resumed her story he finally understood why she had referred to Xavier in such a manner, a simple nod came from him in acknowledgement of the fact that the man had somehow disappeared. It didn’t matter, after all he was apparently back.

The way she spoke about Mr Summers however was quite strange, there was a hint of hesitation as if she was choosing her words carefully. Edwards was not a reader of body language like Doug but he wasn’t dumb either, there was something off there but again he wouldn’t pry on that subject. “Right,” he said suspiciously.

Looking to both his sides he wondered what to talk about in order to change the subject, it didn’t seem like the best to approach. With an almost startled look on his face he remembered something. “You said you teach the little ones? How so?” he asked in a cheerful yet noticeably forced manner.

"Aye," she said, relieved that he wasn't pressing the issue, either of them. She was certain that Jean wanted to keep this Ruby thing under wraps as best as everyone could, try not to get people alarmed, or worried for their safety. After all, the last time Scott's personality was overwhelmed by something else, the consequences were dire for the entire school.

But the last question, that she had no troubles with. The smile returned to her face again, a bit more beaming and prideful.

"Oh, well, ye know how most mutants kinda... 'activate' I guess, upon puberty? Well, there are some of 'em who mutate younger, an' those that do and come here are my students. I stick more to a basic curriculum for them, yuir readin', writin', an' 'rithmetic, plus a wee bit o' arts 'n crafts, some history an' whatnot. 'Tis a fairly wide age range overall, so I kinda have to split things up so that nobody's sittin' there waitin' for me, but I've got the system well figured out."

She glanced back quickly, a squirrel darting by catching her attention momentarily.
"I also moderate the feral group, but that's much less a class as it is a support an' social group for those of who are of more of an animalistic bend."

Apparently his attempt at changing the subject was successful, it was almost too obvious but it had served the trick. Luc would make an effort not to mention anything about Mr Summers at least for now, it seemed like the best choice to him at that particular time. After all he didn’t quite know Ms Sinclair nor did she know him for that matter. She seemed very proud of her task at the mansion, or at least he assumed so from the way she reacted as she thought about it.

He certainly knew what she meant with the whole conversation about mutants realizing of what they were. Luc had gone through that during his puberty and it could be a rather stressful experience to say the least. The Brit wasn’t quite aware that they could mutate at a very early age but ever since he had learned of his own mutation he had avoided everything that had anything to do with it.

The things that she said she taught indicated they were quite young and he had seen some of these kids but he had always tried not to think of it. A man could try to be blind only for so long, right?

“I see, certainly seems like quite the challenge, wouldn’t like to be in your shoes,” he said sincerely because he didn’t really see himself doing such a thing. He had trouble in dealing with adults, let alone children of all things.

When she mentioned something about the feral group however his face immediately contorted itself. “Excuse me? Feral group? What does that mean exactly and why do you moderate them?” This time he couldn’t quite go around it, it had been too explicit to just ignore and let go.

"Oh, it's a challenge alright, but it's well worth it. They're wonderful kids, barrin' some behavioral issues, but that's to be expected. It just... does me good to know that I fill an important role not only to the school itself but in these kids' lives. Many of 'em could never go to a 'normal' school, after all," she said, accenting with her fingers the quotations around the word "normal".

"But no, it's not a job f'r everyone. Nae too many of us are called t' the teachin' profession after all. It's rewarding work if yuir heart's in it, but ye know how it is. I'm sure that if'n ye'd like t' find some work here at the school, we could find somethin' that suits ye. An' if not, that's no big deal either. There's plenty of us here what dinnae do a whit o' work... lazy bums that they are."

The chuckle and wink indicated that it wasn't something she took any offense at, but was merely making a small joke. The school, after all, was about helping people, about giving them a place to stay and belong in a world that by and large didn't want them around.

"Oh, right, that," Rahne said with a small shrug of her shoulders as he asked about her feral class. "It's just a group for those of us with mutations that make us more or less part human an' part animal. An' as f'r me, well, I'm a werewolf."

While she started to talk about her students Luc couldn’t stop his mouth of reshaping into a faint but sincere smile. Rahne really seemed to like her role at the school, how she mattered to those of a lesser age and knew about it. It certainly appeared to be a task fit for her demeanour, with an almost innocent look about her.

When she started to speak about how he could do something different, something more suitable for him his head tilted. Truth be told, he had no idea if there was something else in which he could be interested in but maybe with time he would figure something out. Regardless of that he liked what he did, it was simple but yet entertaining and so far it hadn’t bored him in the slightest.

“I like what I do Ms Sinclair but I appreciate your suggestion,” he responded with a small nod to match. “Fortunately it’s something that I like and just walking around doesn’t suit me either, I can’t afford to be lazy you know,” Luc added a bit compromised about what he had just said.

It had been clear by her body language that it was simply a joke but he had his reasons for not wanting to elaborate on why he couldn’t be lazy. If possible he would avoid it, if not he would have to answer even if the answer was quite cryptic at best.

The moment she shrugged and explained what exactly the feral class was though his eyes widened. But just as they did they shrunk back down while his head slowly turned a bit to his right side looking at her suspiciously. He couldn’t help it but it was just too much of a bomb to let loose with someone such as him. For a moment he thought she was joking but he couldn’t be sure, not in Xavier’s anyway.

“Excuse me? You’re a werewolf?” Edwards asked slightly frazzled at what he had just asked. “Like in the mythological werewolf? And there are others like you? I wasn’t aware of that...” he stated in a low tone.

“I apologize but it’s a bit shocking to hear something like that, you know,” he tried to apologize as best he could.
