"I've been strugglin' with that for some time now. I'm told by 'Ruby' and 'Winter'," she punctuated each name with "finger-quotes" and slight pauses before and after, "that I'm some kind o' feral wild child over there what can barely string a sentence together, an' truth be told, I'm quite afraid of what would happen were the other me to come over here, where I've got children dependin' on me. So yeah, it'd be damn nice t' be able t' just let go o' that fear. I think I envy ye on that." Rahne smiled and shook her head, picking up a french fry and swirling it around in some ketchup before taking a bite. "Ye know, ye'd nae think that airport food would be particularly good, but I'm really enjoyin' this. P'rhaps it's the company. Dour topic of conversation notwithstanding, 'tis lovely t' see ye once again, Amara." "An' aye, who knows? Jus' 'cause other you comes from a world even more on the brink than our own, that does nae mean she's nae necessarily a pleasant person. I'd like t' think that deep down inside, we're all the same people, no matter which alternate world we come from. I've had the chance to speak with the other Scott in privacy, an' 'tis strange... he's different, yet in so many ways he's the same. It's a bit difficult to explain better 'n that." |

She was frustrated and tired, and she though the could absorb all of this a wee bit better with a nap. She had a billion thoughts crisscrossing in her brain. Her eyes even hurt. First thing she'd do back at the Institute would be to take a nap. Second, she would find these imposters and grill them for information. Hopefully she'd come out of it knowing more about the world upon whose brink she teetered. But was that a silly notion? What could she find out that Hank or Xavier couldn't? She was just a silly girl, a silly girl with no knowledge past basic high school science. Heck, four years ago, she thought the sun was pulled around the world by a guy in a chariot. She couldn't get dismayed. She had to buck up and take the good with the bad. For better or for worse, she was home with old friends, and with the traffic at that academy, she'd probably meet some new ones. She pushed the events of the last hour out of her brain, locked it up and pocketed the key. She had a lengthy ride home with Rahne now, and that drive wasn't for sulking about situations one couldn't help. It was for catching up with an old pal and, now, fellow X-man. She wrapped her burger back up in the paperfoil wrapper and forced down a few fries, then looking at Rahne. She smiled. "Can we go home?" |

Rahne remained quiet a moment, thinking over Amara's request as if it were much more than it was. "Right, right. Of course. We've got a bit of a drive ahead of us, best get movin'," she said with a sharp nod of her head as she picked up the basket that still had a fair bit of food in it, about half of her burger and then a good handful of fries. She also took Amara's, and headed over to the counter. "Beg yuir pardon sir," she greeted. "Yeah?" the man behind the counter, a fairly greasy looking guy who could use a shave and judging by the sparseness of what was underneath his hairnet, a bottle of Rogaine as well, asked. "My friend an' I'd like t' get these boxed up f'r the trip home, if'n ye dinnae mind, please," ever so polite and courteous. "Oh, oh, sure, sure. Anything for a couple a' lovely broads like yerselves," he said with a lopsided grin that almost made Rahne shudder. He pulled out two styrofoam clamshell boxes and placed their meals inside, alongside an extra container of their 'special sauce'. "You be sure to come on back now next time ya got a flight out." "Oh, we most certainly will, sir. An' thank ye very much," she hurried on back to Amara, and handed her her now-boxed up meal. "Alright, let's get home," she said, walking a tad bit quicker than usual. "Burger guy's a wee bit creepy, so we'd best make it snappy." [Finit] |
