Jack softly batted at a mosquito buzzing incessantly in his ear as he listened, Rahne's voice soft and and nice to listen to. He felt calmer and less queasy--talking things through and all that--but his heart wasn't completely at ease. He supposed it never was, and it never would be with all of the fear and uncertainty beating fast inside it. Moving forward and making progress and making change was the best answer, but Jack supposed he was just so steadfast that it took a lot to get him to move an inch in his ways. He tried to think about how he would tell Lissa he'd been lying to her for all this time, but strangely all he could think about was this little blonde girl in pigtails. Jack shook his head a little. "It's.. not gonna be easy.." Then she took a deep breath. Besides, I miss ye when ye lock yuirself up like that. I quite like these little excursions of ours, an' I dunno... I like spendin' time with ye. It'd be... well, I guess it'd just be nice t' nae have those interruptions anymore. Jack felt himself get almost warm underneath the collar for whatever reason. "I.. I um.. you do?" Maybe he was just reading too much into those words, but they were nice to hear. "I er.. I like it too. You make it easier to talk about... all this." Jack wasn't easy to make friends with, that much he knew; he'd only begun to form friendships when he decided it was time to leave the first time. He was resistant, but who wouldn't be in his situation; he'd trusted Philip--look how far that had gotten him. |

"No, no it won't, but nothin' worthwhile is ever easy," Rahne said with a light shake of her head. She couldn't help but be slightly excited at the prospect of a third wolf on campus. It was pure wolf instinct, really - that primal urge to form a pack, to be around other wolves and do whatever it was that wolves did in groups. It was something her human rationale would keep in check, but the urge to build a pack was still a strong one. "An' ye'll have my support too, so that should make things a wee bit easier," her head cocked back as he asked, in apparent surprise, if she actually did like spending time with him. As if he couldn't fathom that anyone would like being around him. "Of course I do, ye great big goof!" she laughed, and lightly punched him in the shoulder. "Why else would ye think I insist on keepin' this up?" She leaned up against him, placing her head on his shoulder. Perhaps it could be considered too soon after ending things with Doug, perhaps it could be seen as an attempt to "rebound", but Rahne wasn't even thinking in those terms. It simply felt right for the moment, and that's where Rahne's head was. "Same goes t' you, actually. I mean, there are some things that only another wolf would really understand." |

The whole attitude of the conversation turned, and Rahne laughed, giving him a punch in the shoulder, which made Jack smile a little. Of course I do, ye great big goof! It seemed like a regular buddy-buddy gesture, one that he was used to when he had down time with some of the other male faculty members. Jack eased himself up a little, his mood taking a turn up. Why else would ye think I insist on keepin' this up? He shrugged sheepishly. This was good. They were friends, friends trying to make the best of an otherwise somber situation. Then she softly put her head on his shoulder, and he could make out the soft glint of her red hair in the moonlight. Jack could smell her shampoo, and his heart gave a lurch. Could she hear it from there? He tried to brush it off, giving it credit to the wolf in him appeased by the company of a female. Jack would be lying to himself if he hadn't thought of Rahne in that way, but as far as he was concerned, that ship had sailed. Besides, she and Doug had just broken things off. He was glad the conversation picked up again, as sitting still caught him between trying to decide if he should be content in his position or try to slowly, but awkwardly move away. Jack concluded that removing himself would be rude, so he gently relaxed his shoulder, giving her more of a softer place to rest her head. Same goes t' you, actually. I mean, there are some things that only another wolf would really understand. "Yeah..," Jack agreed quietly, smoothing one hand across the grass as he balanced the other arm on his bent knee. "You can't really.. um.. explain to somebody else what it means to hunt.. what it feels like I mean.. or why we do it." He went on in his gapped dialogue, trying to make himself feel more comfortable. "I mean.. people kinda look at you funny when you say you see more yellow in leaves than er... green.. and that you see more.. red," he found himself looking at Rahne's red hair and shifted his gaze away. "..than uh.. brown.." |

"I know!" Rahne said with a slightly exasperated tone of voice. If she heard the quickened tempo of Jack's heartbeat, which she did, she didn't show any signs of acknowledging it. She figured he was probably having a hard enough time with it as it was, no need to point it out and make him even more embarrassed. "Like whenever I go to a restaurant, an' I order a steak, rare an' bloody, nothin' else, no salad, no potato, nothin', jus' that slab o' meat, barely cooked, people jus' give me that look - ye know the look. I know ye know the look," Rahne sighed, but it was more a contented, comfortable sigh than anything else. "We'll find yuir sister an' get her here," she said, knowing that it was weighing on his mind. "Hopefully before she needs it an' not after. An' if ye pop off to the other side before that happens, I'll take care o' ye. I'll make sure ye understand what's going on here an' I'll help ye adjust as well as I can. Keep things safe an' well managed until we've got this thing figured out an' we get ye back home." She looked up at him, tilting her head back and turning her eyes in his direction. "Jus' promise me that if it happens, an' ye find yuirself over there for good, ye'll do yuir best to find somethin' called the Ruby Red gang. I dinnae know much about them, but I do know that Scott and Bobby are with them, an' that the other me is a member. I dinnae know how she'll react to ye, but... if Scott an' Bobby are there, with them, then they're probably the safest place to be right now. At least, I pray that they're the safest place to be right now." |

Jack listened intently and sympathized as Rahne explained the restaurant situation and he nodded quietly. "People just don't.. understand I guess." It was the stone, cold truth. Ferals were just one of the many classes of mutants that were specifically different than others, a whole new set of instincts and urges that were really hard to explain. He supposed telepaths were like that, how they just knew things. "I guess that's why I like to uh.. hunt and get my own food.. everybody here understands more than a human would." We'll find yuir sister an' get her here. . . . An' if ye pop off to the other side before that happens, I'll take care o' ye. I'll make sure ye understand what's going on here an' I'll help ye adjust as well as I can. Jack was touched at the amount of commitment she was promising, although he supposed that was what friends did, wasn't it? They looked out for each other. "I um.. wow.. that's.. that's really nice of you," he said, not knowing what else to say about it. "Thank-you.. I mean that.." She looked up at him and their gaze met as she gave him some important information about the 'other place', the other world which apparently some version of all of them existed. Jack tucked the information away in his mind, although he hoped it wouldn't come to that. He didn't want to have to switch, even though he really had little say in the matter. "I'll remember that." He looked out towards the institute, discerning only a few lights left steaming through the windows. It was probably close to midnight. "We may want to head back soon.. I mean.. so people don't get worried." He wasn't sure why he said it, it wasn't as though they weren't adults and couldn't take care of themselves well enough. But times were dangerous, he supposed. There was no telling when someone would switch, there were no signs or definitive symptoms to rely on. "I um.. I hope there's some way we can figure out to stop these 'switches'," he added. "I mean.. I kinda like the world I'm living in now.." |

"Aye," Rahne nodded her head and gave a small huff of air through her nose. She didn't hunt all too terribly often, but that urge to do so was undeniable at times. The push to run out into the woods, stalk a rabbit, speed after it, catch it in the jaws and shake until its neck snapped and there was lunch. It wasn't a pleasant process, and one she never spoke about to those who weren't of that mindset themselves, but it was natural and a safe way to vent if necessary. "I'm sure ye'd do the same f'r me if'n I needed it," she smiled, but hoped to God that it didn't come down to that. She didn't want to go away, didn't want to be whisked off to a world where she was apparently a wild child possessed of a very childlike mentality within a gang of bank robbers. If that her were to come here... she shuddered at the thought. She had people depending on her here, she couldn't afford to leave them in the lurch like that. "I suppose we should," she answered with a sigh. "Would seem right improper of us to spend the night out here, wouldn't it?" Though the thought was appealing, if not slightly naughty, which was an area of thought Rahne tried to avoid if she could help it. "I do too," she said in response to his bit of hope. Hope was a good thing to have. It was optimism, it was that little bit of belief in a higher power, that things could turn out alright. "An' I like the you that's livin' in this world too." She paused, thinking over just what she said. "I'm sorry, that was very corny of me," she chuckled. "Unless yuir okay with corny, then I'm absolutey not sorry a' tall." |
