Where: School grounds When: May 13th, Just after classes School was done for the day and Angelique sat silently by a large oak tree on the school grounds, a book clutched in her hands. Her skin was a happy yellow as she read the book, giggling as she did. This was how people usually saw her, bright and happy, loving every second of whatever she was doing. It was rare to see her a color other than some happy shade of yellow when outside the Danger Room. Turning the page, she grinned and giggled before taking her bookmark out of the pages and placed it in her spot. As much as she wanted to keep reading, she had homework to do. She pulled her binder out of her bag and grabbed a pencil, opening to the first assignment for the day. Thinking a little, she chewed on the end of her pencil for a moment before writing something down. She always tried to be a good student. She wasn't a straight A, top of the class student, but she wasn't the worst student, either. These people had taken her in out of kindness and she wanted to do the best she could to make their effort mean something. So she decided she was going to work towards becoming one of the Xmen. Maybe she could be their spy. That thought made her grin a little as she continued writing, not noticing as someone walked up to her. She was lost in a word problem, scratching her head a little as she thought. Was it four oranges left or five? Word problems always confused her. Wasn't math about numbers and fractions? Why complicate things with adding in words and 'situations' that might happen in life? The oranges were going to be right there in front of you for you to count in real life, so why try to do the math beforehand? Shaking her head, she got her thoughts back in order before she noticed the person, jumping in surprise as she flashed bright pink for a few moments as she looked up. But whens he saw who it was, she smiled and faded back to a happy yellow. |

"Relax, Angie," Rahne said with a soft smile. The girl was actually the one exception of all her students - she had been here the longest of all of them, longer than Rahne herself had been. But still, Rahne liked to keep tabs with all of her students, even ones who have been around the school for a while. "'Tis just me," she said as she sat down next to the girl, glancing over at her textbook to see what she was working on. Math, not the girl's strongest point, but it was always good to see a student work to overcome their weaknesses. That's what learning was all about in some respect, and it was refreshing to see a student take her work seriously. "So..." she started, glancing away. She was more than willing to offer her help, to guide the girl to the right answer in small ways, but Angelique had to ask for it. Rahne knew well enough to know that if she just butted in with an offer to help out, it would seem like she was just giving her students the answers and that wouldn't be right. "'Tis a lovely day, no? I do love the scent of fresh lavender blooms." |

"Hi Rahne!" She smiled and moved over a little for her, watching as Rahne sat down. She liked Rahne, she was one of the really fun people at the school. Mainly because she hung out with the kids like Angie. She looked back to the book, not noticing Rahne glancing at the book to see what was going on. She knew Rahne would be more than happy to help if asked, but Angie wanted to try for a little longer. Rahne gave a little awkward moment muse and Angie looked up, sighing a little and rubbing her arm a little, turning a slight shade of blue, showing she was upset. "I don't get it, Rahne. What do I do? I don't know what it means." She held the book up and pointed to the problem she was stuck on. The word problem was mentioning someone with a dozen oranges, then taking away seven. She was still learning what terms like 'dozen' meant and it was rather confusing. As her upset mood turned to confusion, she turned an odd swirl of colors from every shade. It wasn't unusual to see her this color when she was confused, it was one of her earliest multicolor shifts, but it had become very common for her to be that pattern in class, especially in Math class. "How many does that word mean? I forget." She looked up at Rahne, hoping the wolf woman could help her. She'd heard adults use the word 'dozen' a lot, especially when referring to food, mostly donuts. But she'd never gotten to the boxes in time to count how many there were and refresh her memory. She was forgetting less often every time she was reminded, but seeing the word written down just confused her again. |

"Thought ye'd never ask," Rahne chuckled, looking the problem over. Ahh, this one, Rahne thought with a small smile. She had a wee bit of trouble with this concept before, so let's see if we can coach her along, guide her towards an answer... "Now, usually, with problems like this one, they want ye thinkin' outside the box, so t' speak. This one wants ye to take the words an' turn 'em into somethin' simple, so we write it out like a regular math problem. So first, we look at the key words here. 'Dozen', 'take away', 'seven'. From 'take away', we know that this is a subtaction problem, right?" She glanced over to Angelique to see if the spark of recognition was showing in her eyes. "So now that leaves us with 'dozen' an' 'seven'. Do ye remember what 'dozen' means?" This was the part where Angelique would have to come up with the answer from here on out. Unless she needed more guidance as far as 'dozen' went. It wasn't the most obvious of word correlations, after all. 'Dozen' sounded nothing like 'twelve', and far be it for the typical eleven year old to know the roots of a word like that. |

She listened to Rahne as she started working through the problem for Angie, biting her lip a little. She knew she should know the word 'dozen' but it was just so confusing. The swirl of colors became even more dizzying as she got even more confused. She nodded a little as Rahne clarified it was a subtraction problem. That much she remembered. But it was still 'dozen' that was bugging her. When Rahne asked her about it, she bit her lip for a moment before answering. "I can't remember... Is it ten?" She scratched her head, trying desperately to remember. She knew it was one of the smaller double digit numbers, but couldn't remember which one. Was ten even close, or was she completely off? She thought she was close at the very least, but her math memory was so bad. Hoping she was right, she looked up at Rahne, the confused swirl turning to a hopeful orange. As she looked up at Rahne, she started thinking about how much she liked the older woman. She was nice and helpful to all the kids in her class. It made her one of the nicer teachers on the staff, at least in Angie's experience. Because of that, Rahne was the first teacher that Angie always looked for when she needed help. |

"Relax, take a deep breath," Rahne said with slow, reassuring words. Angelique's skin patterns made her easier to read than the typical children's book, and the swirling change was indicating confusion and anxiety. "Ten - yuir close. Yuir oh so very close," she smiled, and nodded her head. How to put this one into perspective? Hmm... ahh. Rahne was certain she had it - it was probably the best way to get the girl to the answer. "Ye've been t' the grocery store a time 'r two, right? Okay, so when we buy one o' those cartons of eggs, the ones that say 'One Dozen' on them, how many eggs are in the carton?" She was certain the girl could think of the carton, think of what it looked like, get a good solid visual in her mind's eye, and remember how many eggs were in there. It may have been a slightly roundabout way of getting to the answer, but if there was one thing Rahne knew, it was that you could tell them the answer and that'd be that, or they could come to the answer on their own, despite that little bit of a gentle push in the right direction, and they'd feel much more accomplished for it. |

She whined a little and took a shaky breath, swallowing as Rahne tried to help her remember what a dozen was. Rahne told her she was close and she sighed, lowering her head as she turned a shade of magenta with frustration. She was so tired of this. Why did she have to do this? Math wasn't her strongest point and she just got even more confused every time words and scenarios were brought into it. She rest her chin on her hand as she stared at the book. Then Rahne came up with something else to help her figure it out and she thought for a few moments. Eggs came in a dozen... She could try and remember the carton, the shape. After a few moments, she lift her head and looked up at Rahne, her color slowly fading back to orange. "Twelve? There's twelve there right? So... without seven there's... there's... Five! The answer is five!" She shot back up to her happy yellow and she looked up at Rahne, grinning. This time she was sure she was right. She reached over and took the book back, writing the answer down on the blank. Grinning, she closed the book, having finished the last math problem. With that done, she turned to Rahne and wrapped her arms around her in a hug. "Thank you, Rahne!" |

"There we go! " Rahne clapped her hands together, mouth in a wide open grin. It was always a good feeling to see that spark of recognition in a student's eye, to see them get the answers, to solve a problem. And as such, it was always good to let them know when they'd done a good job, and to show enthusiasm for it. If the kids knew that a teacher was proud of their accomplishments, no matter how small, Rahne believed, it would further them along, make them want to succeed ever the more. Rahne graciously accepted the hug, and patted the girl on the back as well. "Yuir most welcome," she answered. Angelique was a good kid. Granted, Rahne felt all her students were good kids, but that's beside the point. It was always a pleasure to interact with the kids like Angelique, who aimed to do well, and always did so with a pleasant demeanor and a cheerful attitude. "An' that covers yuir homework f'r today. Very nicely done," Rahne said as she released the girl and pulled back a bit. "So..." Rahne asked, thinking now was as good a time as any to bring this bit up. "How've ye been feeling lately?" She wanted to make sure her students were alright, that they weren't too traumatized by whatever'd been happening to the people around them. It was upsetting to the adults and older students, and Rahne wanted to make sure that her kids were okay too. |

She grinned happily as Rahne applauded her, turning a lighter shade of yellow with her pride. She'd figured it out with relatively little help from Rahne, and she was sure she'd be able to remember what a dozen was with the example of the eggs. That in particular was a big help and was something she'd have to make a note of later. She hugged Rahne for a few moments, grinning as Rahne answered her. Sitting back, she cocked her head to the side as Rahne commented on her completed homework, then nodded and looked down at the book as she reached over and put her classwork back in her backpack as she answered Rahne's question. "I'm good. Been having fun in class. I like Art class the best." She looked up at her and grinned a little, turning a contented shade of gold. She liked living here at the mansion. The classes were especially fun. Reaching into her backpack, she pulled out her latest work of art from that class, showing it to Rahne. It was a picture of three people, two obviously adults, the third was a child, but she was on the ground with a sad face and colored a dark blue. The adults in the picture had angry faces and were painted a dark red. She looked up at Rahne, not realizing what she'd painted. The assignment had been to paint something from their past. Most of the kids had painted happy things, like playing with other children or animals. But Angie had painted her parents. |

"Oh, well that's quite a relief, then," Rahne said with a smile and a nod of her head. What she'd noticed with the mind swaps was that they seemed to be preceded by little... "flickers", she supposed - small bouts of bizarre behavior, disorientation, confusion about their surroundings. She prayed often that her students, the young children who did not need to go through such trauma, were spared. Rahne herself wasn't in charge of art for the older kids in her class. They got to go to the actual art studio and work with someone a bit more seasoned with art instruction than Rahne was. She stayed with the younger kids for art projects, fingerpaints and crayon coloring and whatnot. She looked over Angelique's work with some concern, but tried not to show it. "That's quite an interesting piece of work there," she commented, looking it over carefully. Two angry red people and a sad blue girl. She wondered... had her parents shared in her ability? She hadn't pried into the girl's past - she seemed happy here, and that was all that mattered. "So it's... uh... fire monsters... fighting with Violet Beauregarde?" she asked, eyes widened, shoulder shrugged. It was a silly suggestion, and intended to be so. |

She smiled as she looked up at Rahne, knowing there had been a lot of weird things going on lately, like Scott. He'd been acting really weird lately. So weird that she hadn't been allowed to talk to him for a while. It made her wonder what was going on. Any time she'd talked to anyone about it, they'd brushed it off or changed the subject. But she was sure it was pretty big if she wasn't allowed to talk to Scott anymore. She looked up at Rahne, cocking her head to the side curiously. "Are you ok?" When Rahne looked at the painting, Angie looked down at the paper, not seeing any flicker of concern on Rahne's face. At her comment, she shrugged a little, looking at the image. She didn't have anything else to paint from her past. She wasn't sure why, but she didn't think of things that happened in the mansion as her past. The mansion was her future, her parents were her past. Rahne made her lame suggestion and shrugged a little, deciding to lie as she kept her color a steady yellow. "I dunno what it is. He told us to paint something from our past and this was what came out. What is it Rahne?" She looked up at Rahne, hoping she would answer. She needed an idea for something to tell other people who asked what the picture was. She needed a lie. |

"Oh, I'm fine," Rahne answered, nodding her head with a small smile on her face. She looked over the painting further. This was clearly autobiographical, no doubt about it. And it didn't take too much to figure out what was being expressed here. She glanced over at the girl as she feigned ignorance. Right, Rahne thought. We'll give ye this one, Angelique. Ye want to hide it for now? S'okay. We'll talk about this when yuir ready. "I'm nae the one who painted it, Angelique," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "Either way, yuir quite a talented painter. Much better 'n I am, that's for sure. I've never seen angry red people before, but... I'd imagine this is quite close t' what they'd look like if there was such a thing." Yes, that was it - push this in a fantasy direction. Clearly, Angelique wasn't ready to admit what the painting was about, and while Rahne wasn't one to condone lying, she did realize the value of keeping personal bits personal. Whatever the girl had gone through, she wasn't up to talking about yet. Or rather, she seemed to want to talk about it, or she wouldn't have made the painting and then showed it off. She just didn't seem to know how. "Ye do know ye can tell me about anything, right?" |

She smiled at Rahne's answer, glad she'd been alright as well. A lot of the adults had been having trouble, so she was glad Rahne was alright. She couldn't imagine what it would be like if something had happened to her. As Rahne thought about it for a few moments, Angie swallowed and looked back down at the painting. No, she didn't want to tell people about her past with her parents. It hurt too much to even remember. The worst part was the fact that when she first came to the school, she hated most of the people there because the were mutants, but looked human. Teachers like Hank and Rahne were the first to befriend her, but it had taken a while for any of the others to get her trust. Rahne pushed the painting towards a fantasy aspect and she looked down at it. Her parents had always been so angry at her that it seemed like they were red all the time. That was why she'd painted them that way. So rather than take it as a suggestion of explanation, Angie just pushed the paper back into her backpack as she spoke, her quiet voice betraying her happy color. "That is what they look like." |

Rahne watched as Angelique put the painting back away - it was probably for the best, really. Trying to push someone into talking when they weren't ready could have disastrous consequences. They could shut down, lash out, refuse to trust you anymore... Yes, it was simply for the best to just let this slide for the time being. If she wanted to talk about her family issues, if she needed to talk about her family issues, she would when she was ready, and that was that. No sense in potentially doing the girl any harm. She did wonder, though, what the coloration meant. Was it possible that Angelique's parents shared in her ability? Or did Angelique's ability go beyond her own coloration? Could she see that same coloration in others, and just not understand what she was seeing yet? Did other people's moods broadcast to her as colors? It wasn't an important thing to note, Rahne figured, at least not to the girl herself. She figured it may be best to put a note in the girl's file later, but it wasn't a pressing issue. "Well, ye'll have t' tell me more about the Angry Red People later," Rahne said, hinting, but not saying what she really meant. "I'm sure it's a very interesting story." |

While she was in the backpack,s he looked through the other paintings she'd made. All of them depicting two angry red adults standing over a sad blue child. In some, the adults even had items in their hands and there were little red specks representing blood around the girl. Her past was unhappy and brutal. And her parents had been anything but loving. At Rahne's hint, she paused, staring at one of the few happy images she'd drawn. It was an image of a little green girl hugging a big blue man. It was her hugging Hank when she'd first been brought in. "Maybe." After a moment, she pulled the picture out and showed it to Rahne, smiling a little. "I like this one. It's me an' Hank. Should I give this one to teacher?" She looked up at Rahne, smiling genuinely this time. Being comforted by Hank was the first happy thing that had ever happened to her. She wanted to show that to her teachers. She wondered how Rahne would react to this one. This had been a new place for her and she was apprehensive, not knowing what would happen to her. But now she was happy. The people here were nice to her and were always trying to make her feel welcome. She was close to telling someone about her past. Maybe soon, but it wouldn't be any time in the next few days. |
