"Yes, yes, this is quite a nice one," Rahne siad with a smile and a nod of her head. "Let's see... 'tis Oscar the Grouch an' Cookie Monster, right?" She knew what it was, of course. And it was a very nice sentiment that she was certain that Dr. McCoy would be touched by. Who wouldn't, after all? Well, maybe Logan. At least not on the outside. If a gesture would have affected him, he'd have never let it show. "Either way, I'm thinkin' this should go up on the wall," she said, holding it out at full arms length and looking it over from that bit of a distance. "Oh, yes, we're definitely gonna put this up on our wall. I dinnae think I've got any o' yuir stuff up, now that I'm thinkin' about it. Got some of Artie's, got some of Rodney's... 'tis well past time ye got yuirself up on the wall too." That was another thing Rahne liked to do with her students, to give them recognition over things well done. To hang up achievements and give them visual reminder of their good work. Art projects, book reports, you name it, she had it up on the wall. |

She giggled at Rahne's suggestion and shook her head, looking up at her. She knew Rahne was kidding, but she was going to play along anyway and correct her. So she reached up and shoved her playfully as she laughed. "No, silly! It's me and Mr. Hank! It's when I got here and he was really nice and helped me. I like Mr. Hank. He's fuzzy." She giggled as she thought about Hank. He was the reason she was never afraid to go to the infirmary for check ups. Hank was always gentle with the kids and made sure they weren't afraid. He'd done that for her when she'd first come to the school and was afraid of the human looking students that had found her outside. "He's always so nice to me. Like you. Everyone here is so nice. Can I stay here forever?" She looked up at Rahne, smiling happily as she became a lighter shade of yellow. She liked the thought of staying here forever. That way she'd always have a home and people who cared about her. She didn't want to go to the world. It was frightening even thinking of going out there on her own. She just couldn't bear the thought of doing that. |

"Oohhhhh, Dr. McCoy, of course..." Rahne bumped her own forehead with the heel of her left palm, in that typical 'silly me' fashion. And then came the question. Staying here forever - well, that was a first for Rahne. Most of the kids were eager to go out into the world, to experience it first hand, and here was Angelique, eleven years old and yet in some ways, emotionally younger, asking to remain sheltered indefinitely. That was certainly not a healthy way to go about life, and not at all something she was about to promote, especially to one of her own students. ' "Forever's an awfully long time, Angelique," Rahne said, completely serious, but not reprimanding or scolding - just a simple, straightforward, and informative tone. "We are here to protect ye, yes, but we're also here t' teach ye how to live in the world, how t' stand on yuir own two feet, an' we cannae do that if'n yuir here forever." She brought her right hand to her mouth, and stroked at her chin in thought. "So here's what I'm thinkin'. I'm thinkin' you, me, an' perhaps one other faculty member are goin' to go out on a trip next week or maybe this weekend. 'Tis a small neighborhood in New York they call 'Mutant Town', an' I think it'd do ye wonders t' just go out an' see the sights, mingle with th' people... what do ye say?" |

She smiled a little as Rahne seemed to make fun of herself a little when Angie corrected her. She took the picture back and put it in her pack. Then she looked up as she waited for Rahne's answer. Then she could tell the answer was going to be something she wouldn't like and she bit her lip, starting to turn a saddened blue. Turning, she lowered her head a little and closed her eyes. Rahne started talking about the fact they were supposed to teach her how to live out in the world. She picked up one of her books and hugged it, needing to hold something as she started to get upset. Closing her eyes, she took a few shaky breaths as Rahne started talking about going out to town. At that thought, she hugged the book tighter, her knuckles turning white as she gripped it fearfully. The name of the town may have been Mutant Town, but it was out in a place where Humans were too, and that was just frightening. When Rahne asked what she thought, she shook her head vigorously and fearfully as she took shaky breaths. "I don't wanna. I don't wanna go outside. I like it here. I wanna stay." Her voice started to shake as she spoke, her skin flashing to a dark, terrified green. This was a color seen extremely rarely, though every time it was seen, it was at the mention of leaving. Angie knew she would have to leave for missions and spying if she ever joined the team, but at this age, she only ever wanted to stay inside the mansion grounds. |

"Angie, relax," Rahne said, placing a hand gently on the girl's shoulder. This was not what was needed, not what was a proper reaction. The girl was clearly damaged, clearly hurt by something traumatic in her past, and she wasn't going to get any better unless she took proactive steps towards healing. "I'd be right there with ye, an' I'll see about another one of us goin' out there with ye too. It'll be fine, an' I think ye'd enjoy it." Of course, Rahne wasn't goign to push it further. If the girl wasn't ready, she wasn't ready and that was that. Someday, though... someday the girl would have to break out of her shell and enter into the social world. She was a nice enough kid, but she withdrew too much. Far too much. "But if ye dinnae feel yuir ready, we can hold off on it. But someday I want t' take ye out there so ye can see the world f'r yuirself. I dinnae know what happened t' ye, an' I won't ask, but I want t' help ye get over yuir fear of people. So you just tell me when ye think yuir ready, okay? I have faith in ye, Angelique. Yuir stronger than ye know." |

She winced a little at Rahne's touch, almost as though she were expecting to be hit. But at the touch, she turned and leaned into Rahne, wrapping her arms around her and holding her close. She faded from a frightened green to a sad blue as she just started crying sadly. After a moment, she looked up at Rahne, sniffling a little as she listened to Rahne, listening to the assurance that someone else would come with them. Swallowing, she started thinking about the people that Rahne could talk into coming with them. And she thought of the one person Rahne could convince that she'd be comfortable with. "W-will Artie be with us?" She looked up at Rahne, knowing that if Artie was there, she'd be much more comfortable. He looked just as outlandish as she did and if anything bad happened, he could use his abilities to scare the bad people away. But even with that, she'd probably still be clinging to Rahne in terror. The world was such a terrifying place for her. What if her parents were out there? What if they saw her and started hitting her again? That thought made her flush green again as she trembled. Then Rahne started talking about waiting until Angie was ready. About helping her get over her fear of 'people'. Nobody knew it was just humans she was petrified of. Yes, eventually she would talk to someone about her fear, but that day was a long time coming. Lowering her head, she swallowed a little before speaking again. "I-if the others are there... I-I'd be ok. I mean... it could be a field trip." She looked up at Rahne, obviously trying to be strong, but her color betrayed the fear in her heart. She would go with Rahne, but it would be the hardest thing she'd ever done. |

"Well, I cannae make him go, but I can open the trip up to yuir classmates," Rahne said with a nod of her head. This was good. The girl could benefit from this experience, from being able to see that the world outside the Mansion's grounds was not as terrifying as she seemed to think it was. Yes, there were genuine reasons to be afraid of the world, but that was no reason to shy away from it. Especially when one was with people who cared for them and could protect them. "This'll be fine," she offered up a smile, glad that the girl agreed to it. "I'll have to organize the trip, get a second chaperone on board, an' set the date. Who knows? Ye may even find yuirself enjoying it. Mutant Town, as ye may have guessed, is almost exclusively populated by people like ourselves. But again, I want to make it clear that this is not somethin' I want ye to do unless ye feel yuir ready. I believe ye can handle it, I do, but what's important is whether or not you feel ye can handle it. I dinnae want t' push ye into something yuir nae ready for." |

She looked up at Rahne as she agreed to open the outing to the other students and she lowered her head, resting it on Rahne's shoulders as she hugged her. She wanted comfort, any kind of comfort she could get. No, Rahne didn't know what she needed comfort for, but she didn't have to. Angie knew that one day she'd have to tell Rahne why she was so terrified of humans. As she thought about it, she closed her eyes and buried her head further into Rahne's shoulder, trembling. It would be difficult for her to even step foot outside the gate, but she had to do it. She looked up at Rahne a moment later, swallowing before managing to speak. "W-we could go tomorrow. I-I could go tomorrow." Even if she was pushing, she had to do this. Rahne wouldn't push her, she would push herself. Any way she could, she had to leave the school and experience the world. And no matter what, she knew it was best to be sooner rather than later. She would go of her own free will. She may be a dark green the whole time, but she'd be making the first step. Looking up at Rahne, she waited for the answer, hoping she wouldn't argue. |

"Tomorrow," Rahne repeated, a bit surprised. "Well, tomorrow could be difficult. I cannae just take a trip out on th' fly like this. Even at a normal school, we could nae do somethin' like that. We could set it for Saturday, give people time t' get ready, give me time to clear things with Mrs. Summers, an' get a co-chaperone signed up. On these trips out to the city, we like to have two chaperones so we can ensure that everyone is safe, and that we can keep an eye on everyone." Rahne stretched, and stood up, lifting her arms high above her head. "So today I'll get all the details together, work through the red tape an' permission slips, while you make one hundred percent certain that yuir ready t' do this. While I do think it'll be good for ye to head out and see things f'r yuirself, I want much more t' be sure that yuir nae jus' doin' this because ye think it'll please me." She would have hated to think the girl was just agreeing to this for Rahne's sake and not her own. "So... if'n ye've got any more questions, feel free t' come to my room an' ask. But f'r now, I'll see ye later. Got a few things to get together before the trip can be organized." Rahne gave the girl a small wave of the fingers of her left hand before heading back over to the mansion. |

She lowered her head a little as Rahne declined a next day trip and sighed a little, staying the sad blue as she listened silently. Yeah she knew they had to clear it with the other teachers, but she'd been hoping they would be able to pull some strings. Angie had been completely ready to go the next day, but now she had to think about it for an entire day. Rahne went on about what they'd have to do to prepare and she sighed, nodding a little in response. So she sat there silently, not speaking to Rahne as she stood. When Rahne mentioned her feelings about Angie just wanting to please her, she lift her head and shook it a little. "It's not just for you. I wanna be better. I... I wanna be on the team. That means I gotta go out, right? So... I gotta go out." She lowered her head again, nodding as Rahne offered her office for advice, and just sitting there sadly. She would've gone right then if she could, but the school had rules and she had to abide by them. So as Rahne left, she looked over and waved back, just sitting silently as her thoughts started to wander. Mostly her thoughts stuck on why she was there and why she was afraid of humans. And why she couldn't tell them. |
