Rahne watched as the girl eagerly took to the simulation with an enthusiasm that was quite pleasing to see. It was always good to see the kids who were eager to understand their mutations, eager to try things out and learn the ins and outs of their abilities. There were always those of them who were hesitant to experiment, afraid of their mutations, or outright ashamed, but in those who had mutated at a young age, which seemed to be more and more common an occurence (still a very rare one, but if Rahne's growing class size was any indication, it was happening more often).

"Alright, so ye think yuir ready for the test, eh?" Rahne called out, and keyed in a few strokes on the computer. A bright light shone next to Angelique, a light which soon took shape, gaining definition as it became a mostly featureless yet humanoid form. It was the most basic version of the opponents the Danger Room could simulate. It stood there motionless, like a mannequin at a department store.

"There are gonna be five o' these guys patrollin' this section o' jungle, an' two more in the ancient temple," to indicate where the temple was, a big red arrow flashed into existence at Angelique's feet, pointing behind her. The opponent vanished with a flash of light. "They cannae hurt ye, they cannae touch ye - but they will be lookin' f'r ye. Yuir mission is to enter the temple and find the golden treasure. Once ye've gotten yuir hands on it, the mission is over an' ye've passed. However, if yuir spotted three times, then the mission ends. The mission will begin when ye say 'Go'."

Angie looked up at Rahne and grinned as she was addressed. At the question, she nodded and waited as the program was altered. As the enemy took shape, she jumped a little and looked over, taking a step back. Watching it, she cocked her head to the side and listened to Rahne's explanation of what was going to happen. She looked down as the arrow flashed in existence towards her objective and she looked back, barely able to see the temple through the trees. She bit her lip a little as Rahne said her goal was to get inside and get the treasure.

Then things were in her control and she looked around, ducking into a bush and taking on the basic color and texture of it so she could hide if she stayed still. As she sat there, she uttered 'Go' and the enemies started moving. She looked around, keeping as silent as possible while the guard passed by. As she sat for a few moments, she made sure there weren't any more where she could see and she started creeping through the brush, making her coloring a dark green, changing to the brown tree pattern whenever she started in front of one.

As she went, she came across another guard and froze, glancing back at the scenery behind her and quickly altering to try and match it. She knew that with something like this, she didn't need extreme detail, but she needed enough detail quickly enough to blend in. The enemy looked in her direction just as she finished and it paused, examining the area before continuing on. Angie let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding and kept moving.

It was really difficult to keep the patterns up with the environment behind her and now and then, the colors lagged behind, but every time she saw a guard, she froze and did her best to match what was behind her. She glanced up, the temple was in sight, she could make it, but her movement alerted the enemy passing by and it rushed over, an arm reaching out and touching her. She'd been caught. Frustrated, she flushed red and stomped her foot. She'd gotten quite far and knew she could have gotten to the treasure, but she'd gotten impatient. Sighing, she looked up at Rahne, waiting for her to tell her what to do next.

As the guard reached out to tag her, an alarm bell rang out, and the area froze. No sound, no movement, nothing. In a flash of blue light, the guard vanished as they randomly repositioned around the course.

"Relax, Angie. Yuir doin' fine. That's just one strike on ye - ye've got two left," Rahne's voice sounded over the intercom. The girl really was doing well - she had made significant progress through the course, showed a high level of creativity and objective thinking. She knew what she wanted to do, how she wanted to be useful, and was very determined to get to that goal.

Granted, she should probably get some instruction in stealth ops, but that was much later on down the line, when she was older and more capable of receiving such training. She'd be out of Rahne's hands by then.

"Alright, the course will continue in five... four... three... two... one," after the count of one was met, the jungle came back to life, the ambient sounds erupting around her once more. As of now, the coast was clear. There were no guards in visible range, nobody in the immediate area.

As near as Angie would be able to tell, the path was clear.

Angie sighed and looked up as Rahne spoke, then looked around. She knew it was just training, but she also knew that she wouldn't get three strikes in a real stealth operation. Closing her eyes, she took a steady breath and calmed herself as it all started again. She looked around and knelt in the underbrush as she changed her coloring back to the same it had been before she'd moved.

Looking around, she started moving, keeping an eye out for the guards as she walked. Once again, she kept an eye on the scenery behind her, changing her pattern as she moved along. This looked easy from the outside, but it was taking all her concentration, moving her patterns as she walked. She'd never done anything like this before and it was draining her. If Rahne looked close, she could see shaking hands and increased breathing. She was expending a lot of effort.

She froze and crouched as an enemy walked by and she watched it move by. Closing her eyes, she took a quiet breath, then continued walking along as the coast cleared. Before long, she was at the edge of the opening the temple was in and she crouched, watching as she matched her coloring to the bush she was sitting in. The guards had a regular pattern, a regular path they walked along and she studied it, finding an opening.

Once that opening was there, she waited for it, then sprinted out and started towards the temple. She leaned against the wall and matched its basic pattern, watching as they moved by again. Looking up, she waited for a few moments, then jumped and pulled herself up over the low wall. It was a rather small temple, one she could scale easily, so she ran to the first level and crouched, waiting for the opening. But as she watched, her vision started to swim a little and she blinked, shaking her head to clear it.

Gritting her teeth, she took a deep breath, doing her best to keep quiet as she did. Finally, there was a perfect opening and she moved, running up the steps as quickly as she could. Nearing the top, she took shaky breaths and looked up as she saw the treasure on a pedestal. But as she paused, a guard she hadn't seen spotted her and ran over, tagging her. She looked up and took a shaky breath, swallowing as the alarms sounded again.

She closed her eyes and lowered her head, wanting to just sleep right where she was, but she had to finish this. She had to get to the treasure. So before things started again, she rolled off the steps and crouched the level, watching as everything started again. The guards were walking around the temple. There were a couple up on the top level and she watched them, then climbed up, ran in as she saw an opening, and grabbed the treasure. She held the treasure in her arms before everything faded away, signaling the end of the exercise.

She looked around as everything faded back to normal and put her hand to her head. She started fading from one color to another as her brain tried to figure out what emotion she was feeling. After a moment, she fell to the floor in a faint, her color fading to normal skin and hair colors. She was almost never seen with normal human coloring and even then only when she was unconscious.

Rahne watched with rapt attention as Angelique finished the exercise. She seemed to be flagging, as if the color changes were exhaustive to her. It was an interesting thing to note. Mood-based color alterations were natural and reflexive, causing no exertion and no conscious thought. But when she focused, when she deliberately changed her colors, it was an effort, no less an effort than if she had lifted heavy objects or ran a race. Or at least that was how it seemed.

A wide smile beamed on the young woman's face as the girl made it to the end, grabbed the treasure, and the simulation came to an end. She was quite proud of the girl in that moment, proud of the achievement she had managed. It was no small feat to successfully complete one's first Danger Room session, no small feat at all, even if the session was designed to be as manageable as possible considering the girl's age.

Rahne's eyes went wide as the girl's eyes rolled back and she collapsed to the floor.
"Hell," she muttered, and unclasped the lower back of her uniform before shifting into half-wolf form, allowing her tail easy access. She punched the button on the console that opened the window to the Danger Room, a safety function that allowed the administrator quick access in case of situations like this.

"Computer, I'm gonna need a soft landing," she announced, and leaped out of the window. Beneath her materialized a hard-light cushion, which she landed on safely and bounced off, bounding over to Angelique and swiftly swooping the girl up into her arms.

She had worked past her limits, it seemed, but Rahne wanted to be sure.
"Angelique," she said softly, touching her free palm to the girl's forehead to check for any fever. "This is hardly a place f'r a nap now."

The idea was to be gentle and calm, as panic would do the girl no good.

Angie lay silently on the floor as Rahne leaped down to her aid. She was rolled over and picked up, but at first, there was no response from her. As Rahne spoke to her and put her hand on her forehead, Angie jumped a little as though slightly startled, her skin turning slightly pink. Opening her eyes, she groaned, slowly regaining her senses. Her skin flickered a little in color and eventually settled on an off blue color, usually showing she was tired. Her eyes finally settled on the face above her.

"R-Rahne...? What happened?"

She looked around, then back up at her teacher. A small smile spread over her face as she remembered what she'd done. She'd proven she could use her powers to stay hidden and proved that she could be a useful member of the team. She tried to sit up, but had to lean into Rahne as a wave of dizziness hit her. She looked up at Rahne and smiled a little, turning an odd shade of green as her brain tried to display her happiness.

"I did it. I beat the Danger Room."

Her smile faded a little and she returned to the tired bluish color.

"Can I go sleep now?"

Rahne breathed a little sigh of relief as Angelique woke up, her wagging tail indicating that relief as well. The girl was going to be fine, she had just pushed herself a little harder than she most likely ever had before, and that effort exhausted her.

"Aye, that ye did," Rahne said as she headed towards the exit for the Danger Room, her wolf form's strength making Angelique's weight almost negligible. She held the girl against her shouldr with her left arm as she punched in her security key for the Danger Room, both opening the door up and locking the Room down so that it would remain inert until the next user came along.

"Of course ye can. That was quite an impressive run ye had there," Rahne said as she made her way over to the elevator that would take them to the dormitory level. The plan was simply to take Angelique to her room and let her either go straight to bed or get ready first.

"We'll check up on yuir full performance evaluation tomorrow, just t' see what the computer makes of things, and decide a course of practice from here on out. I know ye did absolutely brilliant anyway, though."'

She stepped into the elevator and punched in the number for the dormitory floor, and waited to be taken up.

Angie wrapped an arm around Rahne as she was lift off the ground. She was glad Rahne was there to take care of them. The woman was almost like a mother to her, it made her happy. They headed out and Angie looked around, seeing the hallway as they headed out to her room. Even though she was half asleep, she was still thinking about how cool it was that she'd beaten the Danger Room. Not many kids her age could say that. They went into the elevator and she sighed, resting her head on Rahne's shoulder. Rahne told her they would look at her evaluation the next day and she nodded sleepily.

"Mkay... Go see t'morr'w..."

Her eyes slowly closed and she lay her head on her teacher's shoulder. She drifted off to sleep again in Rahne's arms, turning a happy yellow as she did. Though this shade of yellow was much deeper than normal. She was happier in Rahne's arms than she was in her normal every day state. Rahne made her feel like she was loved. Like she had a family. She never wanted it to end. As she lay in Rahne's arms, her mind started to wander into pleasant dreams, but the one that took Angie's mind easiest was the dream that she was in a normal home being carried by her loving mother to bed. It was the sort of thing she often dreamed about when it came to the teachers at the school, but now that she was being held, she sighed quietly and curled up a little more in Rahne's arms, mumbling something about 'mommy'.

Rahne looked down at Angelique as she nodded off, a soft smile spreading across her lips. The poor girl clearly had a rough go of things, what with the physical abuse in her records and whatnot. But she was a sweet kid, damaged in some ways, but not broken. And that was good. There were some kids back at the Centre who were so thoroughly destroyed by the awful things that had happened in their young lives that it would take extensive therapy to help them recover, but Angelique hadn't gotten to that point. She showed some signs of psychological damage, yes, but she was clearly not broken. And that was good.

They made it up to the dormitory level and she stepped out into the hallway, carefully padding her way down towards Angelique's room. The pawlike construction of her feet in this form made walking a bit smoother and gentler than a normal human gait, allowing for a more comfortable ride for the girl. She got to her door and slipped her faculty card-key out of a small pocket in her uniform, waving it over the electronic lock and opening Angelique's room up. She gently laid the girl onto her bed and pressed the button on her uniform, turning off the color-match function.

"Goodnight, Angie," she whispered, and patted the girl lightly on the shoulder.

She carefully slipped the covers over Angelique, and took a step back. This was what was rewarding about her line of work with this school - the positive impact she could have on these kids. It was a good feeling. She turned the lights off, leaving only a single nightlight on, and slipped out of the room, slowly closing the door behind her.

{The End}
