So...Alistair Cameron's the new physics prof. at the Institute, and he's looking for some threadage. Any takers? I'm up for anything.

Jayne's starting to come out of her shell at the institute. As such, she probably needs people to come up and talk to her, any takers?

She is in need of about two or three big brother-type characters, she grew up around men, so those are the people she is most comfortable with. Especially if they have some sort of "deformity" or obvious genetic mutation.

But- That doesn't mean she doesn't need good girl friends! She needs one or two good female friends, and they could be teachers, I'm not picky :)

Pm me if you want to post :)

Time of day: Night,
Place in the time-line: May 25

9:30 pm

Sarah- Jayne lay on her back, her hands folded over her rib cage, and her legs crossed at the ankles. She turned her head to the side, coughing slightly. She'd already had her nightly bath, but she was still thirsty. Crap. She swung her legs over the side of her bed and stood quietly, and padded barefoot to the bathroom.

Her row of brightly colored plastic cups greeted her, although she couldn't see them in the dark. She grabbed one, knocking two more over, and tensed up, her face a slight scowl in the darkness. She waited, perfectly still for ten seconds before straightening, hoping she hadn't woken anyone up with her clumsy antics, she filled her cup with water and some salt from the container next to the cups.

She walked back out into her room, and decided she couldn't go back to bed. Not yet. The night was too young to be in bed already. Sarah- Jayne shrugged as she turned, grabbing her key off of the dresser and slipping it into the pocket of her plaid pajama pants.

She heard the door close with a soft click behind her, and began to wander the halls, draining her cup of salt water as she went. That was better. But now she had far too much energy. She had to do something. She missed her family, Jack and Scott mostly, and she thought about them as she walked up the stairs to the third floor. She kept walking though, through the music room. She knew there had to be another set of stairs somewhere....

As soon as the thought crossed her mind, she tripped over the bottom step. She found herself splayed on all fours, her cup clattering off to some unknown spot in the distance. Damn. That was probably the green cup. She loved the green cup. Straightening up, she slid her feet across the step, gauging how big it was, and ascended the stairs slowly in this way.

As she pushed her way out onto to the roof, she noticed how beautiful the night sky was. She felt like she could see forever. She walked slowly across the roof, hoping, praying not to fall off. Nothing worse then having everyone find her with all her bones broken by stupidity. She knew she was clumsy, but she hoped she could keep it in check.

She found a spot to her liking and laid down, resting her hands on her rib cage as she had in her bed, but she folded her knees up so that she could prevent herself from sliding off of the roof. As if that would happen, but Sarah- Jayne wasn't taking her chances. As she studied the sky, she remembered what her brother Jack had told her, when he'd brought her back to the Institute,

If you look up at the night sky, find Polaris. That's our star. We can be a family under the same sky, Jaynie. Just look for Polaris.

Sarah- Jayne looked, searching for the right star. When her eyes landed on it, she felt tears at the corners of her eyes. A lump rose in her throat, but she refused to cry, lest she lose the saline she'd been trying to gain.

"I miss you, Jacky." she whispered, "I miss you."

She lay like that for a few more minutes, her breathing slowing substantially. Maybe it was time to go to sleep. She decided to relax a little, resting her eyes lest they become abhorrantly dry, then, she'd have to go back downstairs, to her room, and get her damn eye drops. And once she was in her room, what was the point of coming back up? She'd be better off just falling asleep in her dorm room.

She made up her mind to rest her eyes, just for a few minutes, and smiled slightly. She loved logic. She was soothed by the faint rustling of the wind in the trees around the mansion, and finally felt at peace. She felt her eyelids growing heavy, but just as her eyes began to close, she heard a clatter behind her. Someone else was on the roof. She sat up abruptly and whirled around to face the other person on the roof, praying it wasn't an ax murderer.

Logan obnoxious I can't believe it. Just like I'm sure that's Pepsi in his thermos. That aside Emma is game as well, any chance to help out the team of course.

So much time had passed and still no resolution, no end to this mind swapping nightmare that had become life these days. In fact, things had only gotten worse, with more people vanishing, more people being replaced by utter strangers.

It was the small things that were starting to wear down on Rahne, having to explain the same thing over and over and over again to people who should know these things but because of something that nobody understood yet, required explaining each time. This is Xavier's Institute, it's a whole different reality, there's no Jus Soli, no, we don't know why this is happening or how to fix it. Again and again and again.

"Relax," Rahne said, using her half-wolf form to get a better grip with her feet on the rooftop, her claws providing a bit more anchor than regular human feet would have. She carried a small plate of baked chicken in her right hand, having passed on dinner earlier.

She sat down next to the girl and looked up at the moon with a fair bit of intensity in her eyes as she brought a drumstick up to her mouth and tore off a chunk of flesh.
"Nae the best place t' settle down f'r a nap now, is it?" she asked, bringing her gaze back down to the girl. She couldn't recall her name too well - expecting a teacher to remember every student on campus by name is a fool's errand, especially if that teacher didn't actually teach that particular student.

She gestured towards the girl with the plate of chicken, a wordless offer to take a piece if she wanted.

She knew she had to try,
and she float back down to the warm soft ground,
laughing - she don't know why,
but she had to try, she had to try.

Sarah- Jayne's momentary panic was replaced with relief, at the sight of a familiar face, not to mention a woman. Although, she looked strange in the moonlight, but Sarah- Jayne knew this was the teacher known as "Wolfsbane", she'd seen her around the institute, and knew that her mutation was a wolf's form.

"Relax"

The teacher had said calmly, plopping down next to her on the roof. Sarah- Jayne could smell chicken, and fought back the urge to wrinkle her nose. No need to make a bad impression. She watched as the mutant known as Wolfsbane raised a drumstick to her mouth and tore into the flesh. Sarah- Jayne hoped her distaste wasn't apparent.

"Nae the best place t' settle down f'r a nap now, is it?"

The teacher asked her, was that mirth in her eyes? Sarah- Jayne smirked shyly, hoping she wasn't making a horrible first impression, seeing as she'd never had this teacher before. She wished she knew what to call her.

Sarah- Jayne noticed that her hands had flown to her throat. As if that would protect her against an ax murderer. She looked up into the teacher's face and looked quickly away, she was never at ease around a good strong gaze like that. She shook her head at the teacher's offer of chicken, and mumbled,

"Sorry, ma'am. I'm a vegetarian. But it looks delicious.."

She added to the end, expressing the fact that she didn't think non-vegetarians were horrid people who should all be killed. No, she wasn't that crazy. She risked a look back up at the teacher's face and snapped her head back quickly, blushing. Damn it, her shyness was getting the best of her.

For lack of a better thing to say, Sarah- Jayne shifted, into a more comfortable seated position, and crossed her legs up underneath her.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, I don't know your name, but I'm Sarah- Jayne..."

She said slowly, folding her arms across her rib cage. She knew it was polite to extend a hand to shake, but she didn't want this teacher to see her webbed hands. No need to shock anyone on the first meeting. Her hands were clamped down hard on her gills, making it hard to breathe, and Sarah- Jayne found herself gasping slightly for air. She loosened her grip on her rib cage, and found it instantly easier to breath. Then, risking another look at the teacher, Sarah- Jayne forced herself to maintain eye contact. It wasn't easy, but she knew she could do it.

"Most people call me Jayne, though..."

She muttered again, trailing off as she looked over the teacher's shoulder into the night sky behind her.

"Oh," Rahne said with a slightly surprised look to her eyes and a shrug of her shoulders. The right corner of her lips curled back, revealing the sharp teeth she sported in half-wolf form. Every single tooth was shaped more like a dog's or more accurately a wolf's than a human being's. "Clearly, I'm not. That's mutant biology f'r ye though."

The glint of recognition showed in Rahne's expression as Sarah introduced herself.
"Oh, yes, I think I remember ye," Rahne said with a nod of her head. "Gills, right? Yuir name came up when th' invites for the feral class were being discussed, but it was determined ye dinnae really act like a fish, so there wouldn't be much f'r ye to gain from it. Granted, if ye think ye could benefit, the invitation's open."

She set the plate down on the roof, and extended her hand - in half-wolf form as she was, it was slightly paw-like, with dark padding on the palm, claws at the fingertips, fur on the back of it.
"Rahne Sinclair. Pleased to officially meet ye."

The girl seemed uneasy, afraid even, and Rahne considered for a moment that perhaps the fact that she was sitting there in a shape most commonly associated with bloodthirsty monsters no thanks to horror films and popular fiction wasn't helping all too much.

Jayne could gather that the woman was friendly, although her mutation would suggest otherwise. It was true that in Jayne's eyes, she looked like a horrifying monster, but she wasn't an ax murderer, and that was what Jayne had truly been worried about, even if jokingly so.

She saw the woman smile, and tensed slightly. She did look ferocious. Jayne bit back a gulp, and smiled slightly when the woman implied that it was her mutation that made her vegetarian. That was probably true. The woman began talking about classes, and Jayne's ears perked up a bit, not in the physical sense, but her attention became utterly focused on the woman's next words.

"Oh, yes, I think I remember ye, gills, right?"

Jayne blushed and nodded, rubbing her sides self-consciously.

"Yuir name came up when th' invites for the feral class were being discussed, but it was determined ye dinnae really act like a fish, so there wouldn't be much f'r ye to gain from it. Granted, if ye think ye could benefit, the invitation's open."

Jayne smiled at that, her white teeth flickering in the moonlight. She felt herself begin to relax again, this was a teacher, so clearly, she had been made teacher for a reason. Jayne figured she could trust her if they put her in a position of power, particularly at a mutant school, which she found impressive. How did she know Jayne would want to talk about school? Granted, this was a school, and the fact was talked about often, but still...

Jayne felt herself snap back to reality when the teacher introduced herself as Rahne Sinclair and extended a hand.. well, paw, rather, in her direction. She inhaled deeply,

Moment of truth

She thought, extending her hand as well, hoping the webs in between her fingers wouldn't freak the teache---Miss Sinclair out. She felt her hand being soft, a true dead fish of a handshake, if she'd ever felt one before.

"Nice to meet you, ma'am."
She said quickly, her voice rather shaky.

She stopped for a moment and cleared her throat. This was a teacher. No need to be scared. She paused and started again.

"If you think I could benefit from the class.. I trust your judgement..."

Jayne said quickly, "I'd like to take it if there is a spot for me? I like school, or learning, rather, and... Well.."

She stopped, in a moment of hesitation,

"What exactly does the class entail, I mean, what does it teach you...ma'am?"

Her curiosity was getting the better of her, and she hoped it would be a good move, if only to get some company. God knew she needed friends.

"Well, that's difficult f'r me t' say, really, whether or not ye'd benefit," she said with a shrug of her shoulders. She picked a small bit of breast meat off of the plate at her side and slipped it into her mouth, chewing it well before swallowing it down.

"The class is more a... well, it's more a support group than anything else, mainly f'r those of us with mutations that lean more toward the animalistic, an' the instincts and urges that go hand-in-hand with 'em," she paused, thinking things over. The reason the girl wasn't picked before was that she didn't seem to have any fish-like aspects to her aside from the gills and the webbed digits. She didn't seem to have any fish-like instincts, though she could have been wrong about that.

"So I think it really depends more on you, an' yuir mindset. I mean... like myself, f'r example - I share many mannerisms with actual wolves, hunting instincts, the tendency towards pack-building, an' at times nocturnal behaviors. It helps to be able to talk about those feelings with people who have similar feelings, ye know?"

She shrugged her shoulders, and glanced back up at the moon.
"So if ye started growin' scales an' fins, then I'd definitely recommend ye hop in with us, but as it is now, it's more up t' you, whether ye think ye'd fit in with such a group. It's not all sittin' around an' talkin' about yuir feelings, of course - sometimes we just go for hikes an' visit state parks an' whatnot."

Jayne shrugged. She supposed she didn't share any real attributes with fish, mindset wise, although she was told she was incredibly smart, like a dolphin, and liked going in groups with people similar to her, like salmon. But she doubted those were really because of her mutation. She had always been that way.

"I guess I just need a place where I feel like I fit in..."

She mumbled quietly, pulling her knees up under her chin. She rested her chin on them as she spoke.

"I know this is a school for mutants, but some of them don't look any different from regular humans, you know?"

She turned her head to look into Rahne's eyes. She didn't know if the woman understood exactly, but she knew that all mutants felt different, even just minimally.

"It's weird feeling like you don't fit in at a school of..." she stopped, thinking of an apt description.

"Well, mutants..." she finished, turning back to look down the roof, away from Rahne. She'd forgone the word she really wanted to say. They were a school of freaks. That was what they were. That was what her parents had called her when she'd left for the school. She knew that was what she was.

Jayne swallowed at the massive lump forming in her throat. She wasn't normally this open, maybe she was more tired then she'd originally thought? She forced a smile as she turned back to look at Rahne.

"Well, I don't really need a support group, but could I come in and visit sometime? Maybe audit the class? I'd do the assignments, but you know, if I don't fit your exact specifications I don't need to come..."

Jayne cocked her head at Rahne, waiting to hear what she'd say. Jayne could have slapped herself for being so rude, but sometimes, things just fell out of her mouth, and once they were out, there was no point trying to take it back.

The dormitory was silent aside from a slight grunting sound. Ray Miller was on the ground doing his nightly ritual... Seventy Five crunches in one minute. The boy counted with each gasp as he reached the top of the crunch.
"Seventy two... Seventy three... Seventy four... Seventy Five," and with that he released, laying on the floor in a puddle of his own sweat. He stood up and grabbed a cloth, wiping off his face. There were only a few other boys int he dorm, most of them were sleeping and those that weren't were unconcerned with Ray. That was the effect that Ray gave off, no one really ever gave him a second look. Ray sat down on his bed, and ran a hand through his hair. He really had n

o one to talk to here, having only arrived about a week ago Ray had yet to make any friends or relations of any kind. Looking over at a group of boys his own age the thought crossed his mind that he could at least make an effort. Unfortunately he still had plenty to get used, living among other mutants. He himself only discovered his powers around two years prior, that was still something that took getting used to.

He wasn't ready to drop off to sleep and really had nowhere else to go, Ray figured he'd take the time to explore the mansion. He slipped into some none sweaty clothing and left the dorm room. Ray wandered the halls remaining inconspicuous and unassuming. Eventually he found a set of staircases leading up. He followed the steps from one floor to the next before he finally made his way onto the roof. He had to admit the fresh air felt nice. He took a coupe steps and looked out into the night sky. It was funny, the expanse of sky always made him feel so... small.

It was then that he noticed two others sitting on the roof, it seemed as if he wans't the only one to get the idea to do a little rooftop exploration. Ray wasn't one for initiating conversations and certainly not for joining groups of people. He figured he would leave them alone, maybe he could sneak back downstairs without being noticed. Just as the thought crossed his mind Ray slipped in a rather inconvenient and hit the ground with a loud thud.
"Damn..." he murmured as he picked himself up, checking to make sure he was all in one piece.
