Basically, the idea is for Mutants to clean-up the oil spill. However, the mutants decide to either go renegade to clean it up or a group of Mutants not part of the government does so. Before it dawned on me that WwX has caused factions to be busy and more focused on other pressing concerns (like leaders becoming... well, Onslaught), --thought the BH could use it as putting mutants in a good light while showing what a world of mutants would be like, better for the environment. Also, making a public display that cannot be ignored by making it live on both the internet and hacking into the TV signals and such. However, remembering WwX the idea slightly changed. What if a group snuck out of Xavier's to go clean-up the spill? Those with powers that'll affect water or lift the oil from the surface of the water or transfer the oil elsewhere or stopping the leak itself. With WwX going on sneaking off might be easy enough. However, how would they get there would be an issue. Another idea came as I was writing. What if an internet campaign was started as a joke or some random comment saying something along the lines like 'a mutant would already have it cleaned up by now.' (The comment would have most likely been something exasperatedly stated but not meant as serious. Like a slap in the government face or something). Either way, something starts where a mutant sees it and attempts to gather a group mutants to help. ------ The one I think would be fun would be the group from Xavier's but the third internet idea opens up for others to join. If this general idea where mutants clean-up the oil spill, Anne Lee is going to be involved. Timeline would be around late May or early June. By then, Anne Lee will be switched and more likely to attempt to sneak way. She's also internet savvy and would be terribly bored with the failures to clean-up the oil spill. However, the biggest concern is WwX itself. Everyone's busy. If this plot happens it will be a small scale plot. Nothing major. The main idea is for Mutants to be seen in a better light even if the evidence of cleaning of the spill is only a small youtube video. -------- Just asking for opinions now at least until the idea is refined. Once the idea is (and if it happens)... IF you want your character involved, please state how your character will be a benefit power wise to the clean-up. Not every power can help in cleaning up oil. There will be limit to number of characters, also but I wish to wait until the plot gets discussed before placing the limit and starting sign-ups and if the idea is accepted. Please, any questions, concerns, ideas of your own? I would like to have this plot happen but I understand if with WwX that it might not be able to occur. Thanks for readin'. |

Sofia is all about the outdoors and mother Earth, so she would definitely want to help. I don't think her power would help with the oil exactly, but she could still help free animals if they're stuck in it, and scrub 'em clean along with others if they want to help. As I said, doesn't have much to do with the oil, but it would help remedy some of the consequences. |

June 9th, 2010 10:35 am Sofia had been at the Institute for just over a year now and she had learned a lot, but one thing that only became clear very recently was death. With apocalypse and the evacuation came the deaths of several students. Although she, Julian, and a few others were able to stabilize the ship, a few people were either thrown overboard and drowned or knocked around so much that their bodies simply couldn't take the damage anymore. One of those people was Lily Vansanten, Sofia's roommate. They had been put together in the girls' dormitory the previous May since they had arrived around the same time. She was blond, Dutch, and she could talk to the dead. They got along well despite their differences, bonding over the fact that they were both foreign and new to America. They were best friends, like sisters and now, she was gone. A funeral was held after Apocalypse for all those who had perished. For the number of people who lived at the Mansion, there were still so many graves. So much death. Sure, Sofia's mother had died, but she hadn't seen it with her own eyes. So, now, she was being roomed with Therese Rourke. Sofia had never spoken to her before, although she knew what she looked like, but she had heard she was the resident drunk. She hoped it was just silly gossip, because there was no way she was going to put up with someone who reeked of alcohol and vomit. Sofia could befriend just about everybody, but that’s where she crossed the line. Well, she would just have to wait and see. She had already moved her things but the door to the room was locked so she went to the lounge to put down her things, then left, hoping no one would look through her stuff while she was gone. Most of the students were in class at the moment, but she knew some of the older students skipped Miss Frost’s English literature class. Sofia had been given the day off to settle into her new room. So much for that. Leaving the girls’ dormitories, the Venezuelan left in search for her redheaded roommate who she could only hope had the keys to their room. However, once she reached the cafeteria, she forgot the task at hand, distracted by the scent of freshly baked muffins. Mm, muffins. She did love baked goods. They were left out to cool, out of reach for Sofia to simply extend a hand and nab one. Carefully, and with as much concentration as she could measure, she sent a burst of wind towards the tray, carrying it to her. Grinning at her improved control, she plucked a chocolate chip and oatmeal treat from one of the pockets and returned the tray to its rightful place. Wait, wasn’t there something she was supposed to be doing? She couldn’t remember. Sofia left the cafeteria after gobbling down her muffin and hurried to the courtyard to see if Derek’s package had made its way to the Mansion, but the presence of someone unfamiliar caught her attention. “Hi there,” she greeted the young man, the usual warm smile painted across her lips. “Are you new?” Sofia couldn’t help but wonder, how soon would he learn what she had? |

Ray was lounging in his dorm room, pensivley staring up at the ceiling. The boy turned his head to the empty bed to his right. His dorm mate was out and about, Ray didn`t really know him that well and honestly he didn't particularily want to meet. Ray was still trying to get used to this whole mutant business and now attending a mutant school. He had been at the mansion for all of two weeks and still had yet to actually befriend anyone. He knew he couldn`t go friendless forever but he always found it difficult to meet new people. Nonetheless he decided to do a little walking to clear his head. He carefully left the room and wandered the mansion carefully. He was actually supposed to be in English Literature at the moment but he had taken a mental health day.He was drawn through the hallways by the smell of baked goods. As he followed his nose he familiarized himself with the mansion, taking special note of cieling heights and cracks under the doors. At the school Ray realized he would be encouraged to use his ability but really his powers scared him. He had so little control that he could shift uncontrollably when simply stressed. He always considered t rather ironic that he who happened to have many anti-mutant opinions turned out to be a mutant. It truly seemed like fate and perhaps a path to atonement. Things had changed so much with his life, now he had a dead father and a worried mother. He had not initially wanted to come to the institute, he was convinced that it would be like a death sentence for him. Finally he did end up going to the school and there he was wandering the halls in the search for baked goods. As he walked ge began to think about his powers again. They just seemed so useless. When he grew he was always at risk to the buildings and people around him. When he shrunk he was at risk to ending up on the underside of someone's sole. He was wrenched from his thoughts as a person called to him. ″Yah I'm n-n-new,″Ray stammered in response. |

Sofia did her best not to laugh. It was so weird when people were actually intimidated by her. Well, no, she told herself. He was probably just shy. Lots of new students did, since they were used to hiding. It was a big change for most. For her, she had to go from using her powers, to never using them, to being allowed to use them again. She was free to do what she wished in Venezuela. Sure, their neighbours were fairly nervous around her, but her family was comfortable with it. They knew her and they knew she was as aggressive as a kitten, and yet, that's what people thought, that humans were normal but if they became mutants, they would surely hurt others. Sofia would never admit it, but it was true. It was as if people thought mutants to be something other than human, and it hurt, sometimes, but she tried not to let it. It wasn't ignorance if she was just trying to be optimistic, right? She hoped so. ″Yeah I'm n-n-new.″ He looked a little older than her. In fact, she wouldn't have been surprised if he was a college student. Why was he so nervous? She had trouble understanding people who had difficulty talking to others. It just came naturally to Sofia. She couldn't imagine not doing so. She was just naturally a sociable person. Being isolated for an extended period of time would probably be the worst punishment you could put her through – something which some her age didn't understand at all. "I'm Sofia," she said, bearing her pretty white smile. "How long have you been here?" The Mansion was very impressive. For someone who grew up on the countryside, Sofia had never seen a place so magnificent. It was like a palace, and if that didn't scare you, the number of people sure did. There were at least two hundred students, a dozen or two X-Men, and all the faculty and staff. Seeing all these people who were just like you, a mutant, was a shock to the system – especially considering the attitude toward mutants. Even those who were honest about what they were, out there in the real world, tried not to use it in public. It definitely took Sofia a month or two to adapt to such a new and peculiar environment. What she couldn't believe was that it started out inhabited by only the Professor, Mrs. Grey, Scott, Bobby, Dr. McCoy, and Warren Worthington. Only six people! Sofia wondered if they knew what it might become in the future – a haven for young mutants. Outsiders. "I've been her for about a year," she told him. "You do get used to it eventually. What's your name?" |

Life for Ray had gotten so much more complicated with the appearance of his abilities. No longer was he simply another kid going to school. In fact once the rumors started to spread about what he was he was pulled right out school. He shuddered to think of what his old friends would have done if they weren't in prison already. The institute was supposed to be a safe haven for people like him but honestly Ray didn't feel all too gifted. All he felt was cursed with an ability that took his normal life away. Now he had to do his best to try and fit into this new society. It was normally hard to make friends for Ray but he couldn't see how he could make friends when he had such strong prejudices against mutants in the first place. As Ray wandered the mansion someone called out to him. He hadn't met her before but Ray answered her hesitantly. Socializing didn't come easy to Ray, he often found in difficult to communicate with others of any age. He wasn't quite sure why it was hard but for as long as he could remember he was often the quiet one. He had no problem with listening to others but when it came to responding it was a challenge to get his point across. Other people seemed to have speaking come so easily to them, it was a confidence that Ray himself could not build up. He was shy by nature. Really he preferred his own company, to curl up with a good book in a secluded area was an ideal time spent for him. It was much preferred over the inquisitive eyes of others company. The girl introduced herself as Sofia. Ray smiled at her shyly and nodded his head before running his hand through his hair, he wasn't quite sure what to say. It was then that Sofia asked him about how long he had been at the school. Ray paused for a moment before answering, "Only about two weeks, I'm still getting used to everything," Ray muttered. Ray had always grown up in busy cities. Always congested and full of people, he always seemed to be at the center of the action. The mansion was so much different from city life. It was so secluded and out of the way, Ray thought this was what country life would seem like. He didn't hear the sounds of sirens or the other noises of the street. That was perhaps the biggest change for him, the quiet that came with the area. It was pleasant but it was different. The other thing was all the mutants, Ray had gone from little to no interaction with mutants to mutants 24/7. He couldn't turn a corner without seeing some kid with gills or girl who could shoot lightning from her nose. Ray knew little about the history of the institute or even how it started. Prior to their family friend Edward grey telling them about it Ray hadn't even known this school existed. It seemed strange, a school that catered exclusively to mutants. An idea that would have seemed repulsive to him before discovering his own abilities. Now he saw this place like the others did, it was a safe haven, it was a place for people like him. It would still be a lot to get used to, the school was practically a whole new world. Sofia told him that she had been at the school for about a year. It got Ray thinking about how he would be a year from now, he couldn't even imagine. He figured that he could actually benefit from speaking to a student who had been here for some time. "It's so different here," he admitted. "I don't know how I'll ever get used to living with mutants," he muttered the word mutant quietly, it seemed almost hateful to say it. Even then he still couldn't associate himself with the group, it was mutants, not other mutants. Sofia told him that you get used to it eventually. He had to hope that she was right, maybe it would just take time. Sofia then asked him what his name was. Ray muttered incoherently at first as he tried to formulate a response. Simple questions like this always became so difficult for Ray to answer, being socially inept really did become rather old. "Er, um... I'm Ray," he told her. "So er... what do you do, like what's your...power?" he asked as he struggled to find something to talk about. "It is alright if I ask right?" He wasn't sure whether it was proper mutant etiquette to talk about powers but it was the first thing that came to mind. |

This is a plot that interested me when you were initially discussing it. Honestly, it's a fabulous idea and would make tons of sense. Especially because I would think that at least one of the students would get the idea to do this. Alyson dislikes the fact that there's nothing that the Government is doing to assist with this disaster and would probably be one of the first people to go; "Yeah, I'll help." when asked about this. Alyson could assist by using her TK to pull the pipe shut, and of course help in washing the animals. |

Seeing as how people who are trained and educated precisely in the task of cleaning up massive oil spills can't do it, how would a bunch of kids who just happen to have superpowers manage to pull it off? Who's to say their well-intentioned act of environmental vigilantism wouldn't just make it worse? Not to mention the whole 'illegal to use your powers' thing puts those of us in with SHIELD in a tough position, yet again. There is no way that something like that can be ignored, and SHIELD would all but be required to send people out to arrest you before you potentially made the situation worse. Which, in all likelihood, would happen. I'm sorry to upset Jet again, but I just don't see this as at all a feasible thing. I don't see the students as being capable of cleaning up the oil spill that is now stretching from Louisiana to Florida, and I definitely don't see them as being capable of making any progress before SHIELD has to come in and lay the law down. |

Woot! Rahne, this is actually what I wanted. A discussion with reasons on whether it would work or not (and not requests for volunteering). Before opening for sign-ups and making plans, wanted to figure this out. If it was feasible. As for SHIELD, I say bring them on. Truth, forgot in the zeal of writing out the idea about SHIELD arresting mutants publicly using their powers. As for the character I suggested of mine to be a part of the plot, Anne Lee (even with a switched personality) would deserve to be arrested for breaking a law and would have understood the consequences before acting. Though, WwX Anne will be more likely to teleport away leaving the group of students/those who helped behind (and be caught shortly after for doing something as idiotic like uploading a vid of the clean-up on the internet). As for later consequences of the action, again, bring them on. It'll be sure exciting to find out what will happen to a mutant who chooses to publicly display their powers even though they will be arrested. There's always a first and there is always someone who gets caught with no planned route of escape. -------- Moving on to the spill, yeah it's too large for a group of students to clean-up. Depending on which day (if the thread happens) is chosen depends on how much oil has escaped and which coastal cities and states are effected. Either way, it is still pretty large. Which is why I'd initially wanted this to be an idea for an organization with a lot of manpower and are capable of quick getaways or whatever is needed for a sudden job. So, that will mean the group of students won't be able to perform this feat without getting caught by SHIELD and without hardly cleaning up anything... let alone the animals. Having two of the ideas already nixed, the only one left would be the internet campaign, which would probably be shut down within the hour of it starting. --------- So, the question is, should the whole idea be nixed? Even a small scale event, say the cleaning up of a beach, would cause SHIELD to show up. Hardly anything would be accomplished. The oil spill would still be there. Thinking about this more even the likelihood of Anne Lee getting to the coast would nill. However, not scarping the idea just yet. What about evolving it? Say, a mutant, unknown at the moment (an NPC? or a scapegoat?), or a group of mutants unrelated to Xavier's start using their powers to clean-up the spill... this would cause two things to happen: one, SHIELD showing up. Two, the spotlight being shifted to SHIELD. If this occurs, a group of mutants trying to stop/clean-up the spill would be arrested publicly for performing a deed most would think great (if mutants weren't involved). So, SHIELD could be ordered to at least help plug up the oil spill as well as arrest the law breaking mutants? Or we could just say the Avengers assembled and were asked to take care of it? Yeah, actually sitting down and thinking about this idea, though great and so want to see it in action, not really feasible 'cept on a very small scale. At the moment, there is a site wide plot going on. If there is anyway to take the idea and evolve it to something actually making sense, then by all means, let it be known. Other than that, think this won't happen. However, loved getting out the idea and thanks for reading/commenting. |
