After Clarice had spent a long time in the music room conversing with a new friend of her's, Alyson Hart, she still had the mind of a Curious George. Well, it was not immediately after the music room that she had decided to head to the observatory; she had gone back to the kitchen to get a meal in. Yet, she still had not eaten a satisfying dinner, for the fact that she was too excited to explore the wonders of the mansion.

Before, she had gone to her room for a comfortable, orange sweater. It was starting to break apart. Holes started to form at the sleeves' end, in which she learned to stick her thumbs through. The neckline started to stretch, almost to a point where the top hugged her bicep rather than her shoulder, similar to the eighties style. Seams and threads started to pull, only to be ripped off or cut off. It was definitely faded and had shrunk a little, but it still fit. At least she washed her clothes, she didn't want to be givung the same odors Logan had been spreading around. Clarice giggled to herself while she felt the sweater hug her body with warmth. Even though it was old and worn out, Clarice still loved it. Even though it was plain and not in 'style,' Clarice still loved it. Even though it didn't provide her with the most warmth, Clarice still loved it...

Besides the crystalline javelins, this sweater was the last given present to Clarice by Mother Ferguson for her fifteenth bithday. It was two years ago when she first had it, but she felt safe while wearing it. The javelins resembled the history, but the sweater resembled the love and care. Clarice was sure to never lose it. In her gray sweatpants and her orange sweatshirt, Clarice was ready for the night... a night out with the stars.

Hopefully, Rahne got her message and would meet her at the Observatory. It was advised for students not to wander alone, but she would be with an adult, a faculty of the institute. That's good enough, right? As Clarice opened the door to the deck, the hallway lights disappeared behind her and darkness crept around her. After she shut the door, the only visible light that guided her eyes was the glimpse of the moonlight. It showed her a path. She followed it and looked up... "It's beautiful," she whispered in amazement.

It was surprising to not see her afraid. She was still unfamiliar with everyone and the several places in the mansion itself. She was alone, but the beauty of the night sky accompanied her, helping her hide her fear of others. Yet, she still wanted Rahne to appear soon and to enjoy this moment with her. Clarice could always create a portal for light and escape if she needed it; but the view absorbed her full attention and everything else vanished behind her.

If there was one good thing about teaching the young kids, it was that grading was a cinch. No research papers, no algebra exams - most everything was pass or fail, and for the most part, the kids passed so long as they tried their best.

And so it was with the book reports for the older kids, perhaps the most complex assignment Rahne gave to the kids for each term. Read a book, write about what you read, Draw a scene from the book for a bit of extra credit.

She had just taken Regina's report on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone from the ungraded pile and began to look it over when she noticed a note on her desk. She picked it up with some curiosity and looked it over. Clarice wanted to meet her in the observatory? Odd. She couldn't help but run over potential scenarios in her mind. Was something wrong? Was the girl upset? Afraid? Being harried by other students? It wasn't all too long ago when Rahne had stumbled across the girl and invited her to the school, and in Rahne's eyes, that made her one of her kids, despite being not too much younger than her and far too old to be one of her students.

The grading could wait, and the assignments weren't too hard to grade anyway. It was more about who actually did it than the content anyway. She set the pages down and headed on her way up to the observatory.

"Hello, Clarice," Rahne said as she entered the room, her delivery of the line not at all like the one Sir Anthony Hopkins made famous in "Silence of the Lambs", but the film came to her mind's eye when she said it anyway.

She walked up beside the girl and looked over at her, concern evident in her features.
"Everything's okay?"

The darkness engulfed her, but all she could imagine was herself in the bright lights. The stars. In other cities, very populated ones, you wouldn't even be able to see a few stars. There were too many city lights on, that when you looked up into the night sky, all you saw was... black. Whenever Clarice pictured that, she cringed at the thought of a black blanket covering all of life. But here, with the yellows stars and white moon, she felt that she was living in a fantasy. That if she died, she would be living in heaven and she wouldn't have to worry about anything any longer.... but! She needed to stop; thinking of dying should be the least of her problems. Right now, she wanted to help mutants around the world to feel safe. However, she needed to personally do that herself first.

Standing there, a voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts. It was Rahne. Rahne Sinclair. Her voice was instantly recognized, because she was the first friend, here at the institute, that Clarice had ever met. Actually, she was even the first mutant that Clarice had met. Over the months, they talked about a lot of things. Clarice was not the exact person to express herself and give her feelings away on the first day of meeting someone. It would take a long while until she grew to trust someone, trust them enough to tell them her secrets and emotions; but she hasn't gained the trust of anyone to tell them her deepest secrets as of yet. Maybe.... just, maybe she would develop that relationship with Rahne.

"Oh. hi, Rahne!" Clarice exclaimed, but with a soft tone. "Hopefully, I am not bothering you or taking your time." Turning away from the night sky, she looked towards Rahne, whom was behind her. The observatory at night was peaceful, they would be able to have a conversation without any disruptions. "It may be a random time, but I just wanted to talk to you. A perfect time would be right now, because there would not be any disturbances up here at night." Her right sleeve slipped a bit, and she used her hand to tug it back up her wrist. This may be a broad question, but... "Where do I go from here? I am skilled in my powers and have enough knowledge of how it works; but what benefits do I bring?"

"With every day, my visions of the future for myself gets blurry."

Ahhhh, Rahne thought, nodding her head along with the thought. That question.

It was a particularly difficult question for those who were mutants. Where does one go? Obvious choice is X-Men, but superhero work wasn't for everyone. Neither was education, teaching at the school. And to be frank, with a mutation like Clarice's that gave her a visibly inhuman appearance, options were slim. Hard to climb up the corporate ladder when you're a bright pink elven woman.

"Well, hopefully, we can get things to the point where ye can do anything ye'd like," Rahne said with a thoughtful nod of her head. "I'd nae lie t' ye, the world's nae terribly friendly f'r people like ourselves at this point in time. But yuir young yet. Ye've got plenty of time f'r soul searching and whatnot."

Rahne put a hand on the girl's shoulder and squeezed lightly. She wasn't sure why Clarice felt the need to ask this particular question - did she feel like she was taking advantage of the school? Was that what this was about? Well, Rahne decided, there was only one way to find out what the question was about.
"What brings that line o' thought up, if'n ye dinnae mind my askin'?"

As Clarice pondered and thought of the possible answers for her own question, at the same time, Rahne began to answer it for her. From what she has heard from Rahne herself and very few others; the Scottish girl was very much like her when she was younger. Red was innocent, young, and smaller than everyone else. Still naive to the constantly changing societies and communities, Rahne maybe would not have understood the global issues that involved her being a mutant. At least she was able to transform back from her wolf or half form, Clarice would always be a pink girl with green eyes and elven ears. However, with Rahne, that was all before this current day.

Looking at her now, Clarice knew that Rahne is one of her closest friends now. Not being there, she still knows that the wolf has become a great member of the X-Men, now even being a teacher here. It was great, because now Clarice had hope to do that same thing: helping others like herself. As Rahne put her hand on her shoulder, it gave Clarice assurance. Rahne's next question was going to have a long answer; it was everything adding up. "When I lived with my family back in the Bahamas, I never engaged myself into society. Home was where I lived and stayed my whole entire childhood."

Unintentionally, she started smiling of her memories. "Here, there are so many students with large groups of friends." Thinking of earlier today, "I actually did meet a girl, Alyson Hart, I think her name was." Alyson and her shared a talent of the musical arts, it was great while it lasted. "Though... the thing is: I don't really know how to make myself socially known. How does Kurt do it?"

"Well, we've got plenty of social clubs ye could join up with, check out the message boards, see if anything catches yuir interest. Ye'll find that, f'r the most part, our students here are very open t' meeting new friends, very easily accepting of people. Honestly, makin' friends here is probably easier than at most places. Ye just... gotta put yuirself out there, really. Make it known that ye'd like to make friends and ye will," Rahne said with a nod of her head.

Rahne let off a short laugh, that didn't sound entirely unlike barking, even in her human state.
"Oh, Kurt just has that vivacious personality about him. He's always out there, always upbeat, an' very talkative. Not sayin' ye've got t' be like him, but there's a way f'r everyone. I c'n hardly tell ye what ye should do, as what would work for me may not work f'r you, but... well, just make yuir presence known. Ye see a group of kids, introduce yuirself. Ask 'em if they have room f'r another. Almost all the time, they'll let ye in. Like I said, we have good kids here. Many of whom have the same problems yuir talkin' about."

She glanced up at the night sky, taking a fairly comprehensive look at the stars and the moon. It was one thing she loved about this location, where the school was - no city lights to take away from the stars.

"Ye may not realize it, but alot of the kids here have difficulties socially. Growin' up a mutant does nae tend to allow for normal social graces, Clarice. An' if ye think it's because of yuir pink skin an' pointy ears, I'd direct yuir attention over to Victor Borkowski, or heck, try talkin' to a particular pink-skinned young student o' mine. He may not speak back t' ye, at least not in words, but ah, I hardly know where I'm goin' with this. Rambling, I think."

"Really? Social Clubs? That sounds really cool. Especially with my ever-growing interests and activities, I might as well do that right away tomorrow morning!" Clarice smiled at Rahne and thought of all the possibilities. Maybe there was a music class or an art club; both would be perfect for her. Seeing as her talents are the specialties of art, she loves painting! "I think it's because I just never really grew up with people around me." Seeing Rahne nodding her head assured Clarice. She covered her mouth in an 'oops' gesture, "Ha, Kurt was just the first one to come to mind, because he is all colored up like me and can teleport. There are a lot of physical similarities between us." Rahne was right, though. Each and every person has a different personality and their own way of expressing and using it. She would never be as open as Kurt is.

When Rahne glanced at the night sky, Clarice did the same. It made her more comfortable when she remembered that the moon always gave her the right light; not like the blinding sunlight.

"It is okay; you are just trying to help me out. If you need to ramble to do that, I am fine with it." After thinking about the list of students that Rahne had just given to her, "I... I think I will start tomorrow. Second thing on my list is to meet people like me." A yawn escaped her mouth and she politely covered it with her hand. Turning back to face Rahne, "Thank you, Rahne. You are not just a teacher, but also a friend."

"Absolutely, Clarice," Rahne said with a sharp and affirmative nod of her head. "We may be smaller 'n most schools, and the nature of our school may make certain aspects wholly unique, but we still try to keep things as quote-on-quote 'normal' as possible, t' give our students a full and enriched educational experience - and that includes providing opportunities t' socialize."

In some ways, Rahne felt sorry for Clarice - that she grew up in relative isolation, and hadn't learned much about how to interact with her peers - it expressed itself in her speech, her posture, even this particular meeting, held in relative secrecy, showed a certain discomfort with being around others. But she was willing to learn, willing to overcome her weaknesses, and that was an admirable trait that deserved no pity.

"That sounds like a wonderful idea," Rahne said with a soft smile. "Just remember t' be yuirself, an' ye've got nothin' to worry about. Yuir goin' t' be just fine, Clarice. An' remember also that this school is full o' people like you. They may not have the same abilities, or the same appearance, or even the same life experiences, but we all keep a good bit in common."

Hmm, "Smaller schools. I like that. I won't be able to be peer pressured, I won't be able to crack underneath the large crowds. Maybe this could actually be for the better." Looking down, her magenta-colored hair fell among her face. With her left fingers, she gently pulled it behind her ear and looked back up to the lovely scene.

Clarice tried to slow her vision down. It was something that she imagined herself doing so that she can cherish every moment of her being. Her eyelids blinked close and opened; with her lips, she let out a soft breath. It was warm against the cold air; she was even able to see the physical chill of the night using the moonlight around her. Looking across the night sky, she saw a bird. Possibly, an owl? It flew so gently and swift; so quiet. Sometimes she wished that she could fly, just to get away from-- everything. She would let herself be and be free. Or better yet, she wished that she was an animal. Would always be loved and taken care of...

Thinking about it, she felt the presence of the woman, not too much older than she was herself, beside her. It was then that she remembered her mutation, her being able to transform into a wolf. Was that not what she was just thinking about? Being an animal, having all of the freedom there was to have? "Rahne. What's it like? You know, being able to transform into a wolf."

Rahne couldn't help but chuckle lightly, and shake her head as the question was asked.
"Ye know, that's a question I get alot, actually," she said, smirking as she looked over to Clarice.

"An' no matter how many times I'm asked it, the answer's no easier. I've been able to do it since I was nine years old at the least, maybe even younger, an' truth be told, I spent so much o' my childhood half-wolf that even now, it feels more strange t' be like this than to be all... wolfy."

Her entire body shuddered, and in that quick moment, reddish-brown fur sprouted all over her body, her face lengthened some, her nose flattening against it as her mouth took on a slightly more snout-like format, ears growing long and pointed, a tail sprouting out of her backside, laying just over the waist of her pants. It may have became clear to Clarice why Rahne almost never wore footwear in the mansion grounds as her feet were almost indistinguishable from paws.

"It's just that... people have expectations, whether they mean to or not," she said, her voice a bit rougher, scratchier almost. "They see me like this and are surprised at the way I actually am. At how I behave, the way I speak, the what not - they expect a snarling, savage animal and get me instead. And they tend to be afraid too - not so much when I'm a petite redhead, so it's more a conscious decision to be more humanoid even though it's far more comfortable to be like this for the sake of others."

She glanced over at Clarice, who may have noticed that despite the physical difference, the facial expressions were as much the same as they could possibly be.
"Not sure how well that answered yuir question, to be honest."

When she heard Rahne chuckle, Clarice knew that it wasn't a too personal question that would have bothered Rahne; so she was glad that she would get an answer without any problems. "Really?" Then Clarice chuckled along with her. Half of her childhood as a wolf? Oh my. But before saying anything else, she let Rahne finish her story. But, before she was able to continue speaking, the woman before her started to change. Change as in her mutant abilities.

Clarice stepped back a little from pure shock of surprise, but she stepped forward to make sure that Rahne knew that she was not afraid. It has only been a few times that she has seen her lupine form, but Clarice was never really afraid of her; because she knew that on the inside, was a caring and loving woman. Clarice looked at her feet and noticed.... really nothing changed. "You know what, Rahne? I think that it's different for some people." Clarice rolled her sleeves up and showed more of her pink-colored skin. "I knew you from your human form first, so when you transformed... I knew that it was still you. That's what people really need to think about."

"But I also think that I am used to this transformation of your's, because I also look completely different." Making reference and gesturing to her skin, "The people that I have gotten close to learned to love me for who I am; not for what I am." Clarice smiled, "It did; that answered my question perfectly." Thinking about what comes next, a lightbulb shined over her head. "Have I ever showed you what I have learned for my powers from my time here?"

"Yup, really," Rahne said with a smile and a nod of her head. "Sometimes m' mum would say that she dinnae know if she was raisin' a daughter or a puppy. The uh... the line was pretty blurred sometimes."

Rahne listened as Clarice theorized on that bit of human nature, and nodded her head.
"Och, 'tis definitely different f'r everyone. Whether we mean to or not, we have subconscious reactions to everything and everyone around us. There are many people who have a good bit of difficulty in lookin' past what the skin shows. And a good many people who couldn't give much less of a shite about that and can see people at a deeper level. An' I do believe that at this school, where ye've got a fairly high concentration o' folks what have been battered a good bit by life on account of what they are have become very good at seein' people for who they are. Hardly matters if ye've got green skin or four arms or what have ye, it's right there in yuir heart that's what matters."

She punctuated that statement with a quick tap of her finger on the left side of her chest, just to visually demonstrate it.

"I'd very much like t' see what ye've been workin' on," Rahne said, her smile growing wider. "I am sorry I've nae been able t' work with ye in yuir education, but well, yuir a wee bit older than what I've trained for. And we've got so many who are perfectly suited for instructin' ye."

The thought of actually showing her powers for the first time since she has been trained was exciting. She felt like a little kid showing off their shiny, new toy. Before she was about to 'show-off' her new skills, Rahne stated that she was sorry for not being able to teach her. "Don't worry about it. You saved my life by finding me. Plus, with others, like Kurt, teaching me; it's a way to meet new people." Clarice was really positive and optimistic of meeting new people; ever since the very recent conversation.

"Let's see." Looking around for something to throw, a small object or item; she found a pencil in her pajamas' pocket. Must be from when I was writing earlier. Twirling the pencil in her hand, she payed close attention to it. A pink glow formed around it. She looked around again to see what she could teleport. Seeing a small pot with a plant on a decoration table behind them, she threw the pencil straight towards it.

On impact, the pot glowed pink and disappeared. Seconds later, a small, glowing, pink portal appeared above her hands. With a blink sound, the pot fell through and landed in her hands. The portal vanished. "Not only can I blink something through projectiles, but..." Another portal appeared behind Clarice, but in a larger size. With three steps back, she disappeared into the portal and it blinked gone. Again, moments later, a pink portal appeared near the decoration table. Clarice walked out and set the pot down. The lights of the portal vanished and it got dark again. "Yeah, I can't do much in this room." She laughed and walked back over to Rahne.

"Well, glad to have helped out," Rahne said, a wide smile beaming across her face. It always felt good to be of assistance, to make a difference in someone's life. It was why she opted to do the X-Men work alongside her teaching responsibilities - because Rahne felt it was good to make a difference to the people around her, to protect those who needed protection, to give shelter to those who needed shelter.

Rahne's eyes widened in surprise as Clarice seemed to have charged the pencil with some sort of glowing energy, and flinched instinctively as the pencil was flung at a nearby potted plant, half expecting it to explode in a shower of dirt, clay, and plant debris. But it didn't. It simply reappeared above Clarice's hand and landed harmlessly in her palm.

A short display of her teleportation prowess by shifting herself from one end of the room to another, back to where the plant originally was, later, and Clarice's demonstration was completed.

Rahne clapped her hands together, her tail wagging in unison with them.
"I'm very impressed, Clarice!" Rahne said with a smile and a nod of her head. "Seems yuir quite the quick learner, aren't ye?"

Even though Clarice was used to it, she still thought it was so weird seeing this half-wolf and half-girl before her. Being able to talk; but clap your hands and wag your tail at the same time? She has never been exposed to the mutant side of society and the community that they lived in. Ever did she watch news about them; read of them in the paper; or ever interact with them. Only Rahne, the wolf; Alyson, a perfect example of multiple mutations; Noriko, an elemental; and she has seen and heard of a few others from a distance. She never dared to interact with them; but she should start. Seeing the actual diverse powers of all of the mutants was interesting, Clarice, herself, was unique too.

"Oh, don't be too impressed. I am so far behind from Kurt's level." Clarice thought about that, she had to stop putting herself down. And why was she always comparing herself to Kurt? Because he was a teleporter? This needs to stop. "Forgive me. I need to stop putting myself down. It's just that everything is so overwhelming; and I am the type of person to take things one bit at a time, ya` know?" Clarice nodded her head and actually laughed normally this time, rather than a fake or half-ass chuckle.

Acting a bit happier, she slightly bounced around and plopped herself right beside Rahne; sitting down with her legs crossed. "Sometimes, I just want to hug you for everything that you did fer me... Oh, see, I'm starting to talk like you!" It was sort of a joke, but it slipped out. Clarice came around to loving Rahne's accent. In a more serious tone, "Have you ever thought about a loved one... doing something really awful?" Of course, Clarice was speaking about her thoughts of her brother actually burning the house down. Intentionally or not; she still wanted to know the truth.
