"But... what Kurt does is similar, but different than what you do," Rahne said, lifting an eyebrow. She was glad, however, when the girl stopped herself from going any further, caught herself. She had a fairly strong awareness of her shortcomings, of her faults, and was willing to correct them. That was a very admirable trait.

"Ha! Aye, the accent is infectious, I've noticed. I've got some o' the kids referrin' t' the garbage can as a bin," she chuckled idly as Clarice sat down next to her, lamenting about wanting to give a hug.
"So what's keepin' ye then? Ye know full well I dinnae bite. Go right on ahead, I won't be weirded out 'r nothin' of the sort."

Then came the question - a loved one... doing something awful? Rahne thought about it a moment, pondering over the concept.
"Honestly? No. It may be a fault of mine, but I tend to trust the people I love implicitly. I simply have a very difficult time even imagining someone I care about, an' nae the alternate reality version of someone I care about."

The memories of that reality-swapping thing from not too long ago were still fresh, still unpleasant. It was something they were all working hard to get over.

"So no, I'd have to say it's nae somethin' I've given any thought to. Why do you ask, if ye dinnae mind my askin'?"

It seemed that Rahne had very good intentions. The woman had a lot of belief inside of her; she trusted anyone that just felt... right. It was really different with Clarice. As a child, she did not even trust her brother; especially, since his friends always hated and made fun of her. Hell, she could even see her own brother talking bad about her behind her back. The only two people she ever trusted were her parents, but now they were... gone. That meant that she had no one in her life to trust, but maybe this was the moment to make one.

"I'm scared, Rahne." Her tone in voice came from being confident, to being joyful, to being serious, and finally to being nervous. It would be the first time that she ever talked to anyone about her thoughts of her brother, but she realized that this was the perfect time to spit it out. "I'm a mutant, right?" Those were one of those rhetorical questions that led up to a real question. "Well, what if my brother was one?" Clarice pushed her long, pink hair out of her eyes so that she could show more emotion through them. "I was supposedly in New York when the fire at my house started... the one that killed my parents."

Taking a long pause, and a deep breath, Clarice continued. "I'm just saying... I think my brother may be a mutant, controlling fire or something like that. He never really did like our parents, because he was always saying how they paid all of their attention on me." This was the time where she would usually feel guilty, but she decided that she needed to stop that guilt trip. "What if he burned the house down? Maybe on accident... or maybe intentionally." They never did find the remains of his body. "He may have ran away."

And there it was. Fear. Fear of the bogeyman, and that bogeyman just so happened to be her brother, a scenario that seemed to play out far too often. It was sad, really - that things like this came to pass so many times, but sure enough, it did, and it always did the most damage to the ones like Clarice, who are left to live in fear the rest of their lives unless they get help pushing past that fear.

"It's possible," she said, nodding her head slowly. "The mutant gene does tend to run within families, mutant parents tend to have mutant children, two human parents with recessive mutant genes tend to have mutant kids... But we cannae know for sure."

She wasn't a geneticist herself, but being raised by one definitely rubbed off on her. Understanding the mutant gene and its effects on human DNA was her mother's life's work, after all. Enough of the information that Moira McTaggert had accumulated passed on to her adopted daughter, and tended to come out in small bits here and there.

"Tell me, Clarice," she said, allowing the girl ample room to sit closer if she felt the need, to use a leaning shoulder or whatnot, "d' ye think yuir brother's a danger?"

How could Clarice ever think that? Her own brother... a monster? A killer? No, he was, and may still be, family. Her own flesh and blood. Family is supposed to be loving, loving and supporting. It never came to her that she never had that relationship with her brother. Rahne pretty much gave her a vague answer, but she didn't expect much. The Scottish girl didn't have know-it-all powers. "Yeah, me too. At least you know a bit from Dr. Mactaggert. I've heard she's really smart when it comes to mutants." Being homeschooled, Clarice was only taught the basics of everything, but never extended branches.

When Rahne moved closer, it was more comforting for Clarice. It lessened the fear inside of her. She looked at Rahne as if she was the older sister that she needed in her life. "Well... he did hang out with some bad kids. His friends... they hated mutants." She shivered at the thought of them. "I've heard stories of humans that could potentially start a war against us. Is that true?" Maybe the initial question of her brother turned into a topic of social issues.

"Likely she's the best," Rahne said with no small bit of pride in her mother. "I'm sure Dr. McCoy'd beg t' differ, an' would probably have his ego wounded a wee bit by my sayin' it, but hell - she's my mum. I am a wee bit biased in the matter."

As Clarice explained things a bit further, Rahne listened, taking in each word carefully. Brother hung out with the wrong crowd, a crowd that potentially could have led him to some shady dealings.
"Well, I cannae say f'r sure, but... I dinnae think any of us could - not until there are some facts straight. Until then, let's nae jump to any conclusions. Innocent until proven guilty, aye?"

And the topic of war. Clarice certainly had a lot on her mind, that was for certain. And it seemed little of what she wanted to talk about was pleasant. Understandable, of course - it's rare that someone asks for a private audience to discuss pleasantries. They ask for private audiences when they are bothered, upset and seeking counsel.

"There are some who would love nothin' less than warfare with our kind, but it's hardly as simple as that for them. Remember, we cannae allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that all of mankind is out to get us, or even that most of them are. The truth is far more muddled. I mean, sure, mutantkind's public image has taken a hit no thanks to recent events, but to say that we may see war waged on all of us? 'Tis unlikely. Even if most people are truly afraid of us, most of those people would never act upon that fear. We do have to be cautious, but war with humanity is not as inevitable as some would have ye believe. If it was, we wouldn't be here. We wouldn't be standin' up for what we do."

As the talk of who the smarter mutant scientist was, Clarice smiled at the fact that everything was not too serious, and there were times for jokes still. "Yeah, I have nothing to say to that. From the stories I have heard of your mother, and the actions that I have personally seen Dr. McCoy do; I am sure both are very skilled at what they do. It's always good to have more, rather than one best, right?" Clarice laughed and listened on the rest of Rahne's words.

When Rahne spoke about her brother, she could somewhat understand her answer. There was no hard evidence or even great clues leading up the fact that her brother is what she thought he was. But at the same time, Rahne did not know Clarice's brother as well as she did. It was all jumbled up in her head. Maybe, maybe because she just wants some closure on her brother... especially if he is still alive. "That's true, Rahne. Hopefully, I can find answers soon."

Now, they moved onto more general issues that involved the whole world. Again, another hopefully; hopefully, Rahne did not get too annoyed with all of these negative issues that Clarice kept bringing up; so far, she looked fine with answering all of them. Clarice is fairly new to the mutant world, she does not really know all of this stuff yet, despite her age of being nineteen. Clarice took a few moments to take in everything that Rahne had just said. While still gathering her thoughts together and processing it, she slowly nodded her head.

"Thinking about it now, I don't believe myself to be a hypocrite. It's wrong for people to stereotype the whole mutant race, based on the actions of a few mutants. We can't do the same to the humans, saying that they're all bad, because of a select few." Clarice smiled to her own realization. "I think I am just scared from what those select few are capable of doing to us." She never thought about it. This mansion is a safe room for all mutants. Clarice also realized, from Rahne, that the X-Men fight for all mutants.... and humans. A belief in equality.

"Oh, sure, sure, the more experts the better, especially if they're as benevolent as Dr. McCoy an' me mum are - we're still such a new thing, really, that the more we can learn about where we come from an' how we do what we can do, the better," Rahne wasn't terribly involved in the science of things herself. Despite having been raised around it, science didn't particularly play to her intellectual strengths and much of the more complicated theorems and whatnot eluded her. But she understood its importance and respected those who could grasp it at those higher levels.

"Well, I've done a wee bit of work with an old friend of mine, Jamie Madrox, from time to time - he's with X-Factor out in Mutant Town an' runs a detective agency on the side - if'n ye could give me yuir brother's name, I could ask him to look into it, see what he can dig up," Rahne said with a small shrug of her shoulders.

"While there are humans out there t' be afraid of, I think the bigger concern is those of us who lash out at mankind, who seek vengeance for harm that had been inflicted on them, or worse, those who just like power and abuse it - sure, ye find it on both sides of the human condition, us an' those who aren't mutated, but well, when it's one of us, or a group of us, it makes the rest of us look bad, right?"

The more experts, the better. As Clarice pondered this statement of Rahne's, another thought entered her head. Rubbing the side of her face, her eyes got smaller while she thought about this whole study of the mutant race. Since she did not really know what her future holds for her, maybe becoming a scientist like Beast would be helpful. Many benefits would come from this study, which includes gaining such knowledge of her own kind, and she can help and assist others in medical needs. Now, scratching her head, she thought about it more. That would be a lot of work to do, would she be able to handle any of it?

Jamie Madrox. He was the guy that was able to make duplicates of himself. Wouldn't that be fun? To have several of you, being able to do a lot of things at a time? It could also get overused and stressful. But, one has to admit, there are pros and cons to each and every mutant power. There was not a perfect one, at all. Look at Rogue, she is able to steal a person's energy and life, but she is not able to touch anyone. Clarice would hate to be her. "It's.... it's Charlie Ferguson." Clarice's eyes opened wide. She has never said his full name for a while, it just seemed like a rush to her.

"Exactly. I know this may sound cliche, but why can't the whole world just be so peaceful?" Clarice sighed and laid her head in her hand. "It's so not fair. Look at us, for example..." us, meaning the X-Men, "we help both mutants and humans, but we still get hated on."

"Well, if'n the whole world was peaceful..." she paused a moment, thinking it over, how to finish this particular open-ended statement. "Well, it's a noble goal, an' one we should all strive for, but I dinnae think even the most optimistic of us could hope for that to happen."

She glanced back to Clarice, and nodded her head.
"But like I said, that should nae stop us from tryin'. Try to obtain perfection, ye may get close. Accept that things won't get better, an' they won't. So the key is to just never accept it. Maybe we can't make things better. But we'll never know unless we try."

The name got taken down into her memory, filed away as "important". She'd have to write it down once she got back to her room.
"Alright, Charlie Ferguson, and... where'd ye come from? What city, what state?" these were the things she'd need to know. There could be any number of Charlie Fergusons anywhere, but from one specific town? That narrowed things down significantly.

"We'll see what Jamie can dig up. He may be a bit of a clown at times, but there really is nobody better at what he does. And he's one o' my very best friends so he'll pretty much do whatever I ask him to do."

"As they say; one step at a time." That just slipped out. Actually, where had Clarice heard of that line? Oh, right; from the singer, Jordin Sparks; but there had to be someone whom had used it before, it seemed so... classic. "And you know, it's human nature; we are all different and think differently. Apparently, some just think that it's okay to destroy a whole city." Blink made a gesture with her arms that represented annoyance in what she currently was speaking of.

"I don't believe in the word, 'perfect.' It's nonsense to me." Clarice yawned and politely covered her mouth; and her eyes could hardly keep open. "And if perfect did exist, I believe that each person has their own definition of it. People with money get mad if they don't have the latest phone; but people with not that much, are really happy to even have a phone in the first place." Clarice said that sort of mumbling, which happens when she gets tired. But it still made sense to Clarice.

Yay, more questions. "I think he was born in the same place as me, which would be Cartusia in the Bahamas. That narrows it down, right?" Clarice knew that for sure, but she was too tired to know that. "If Mr. Madrox does go through with this, tell him I said thanks. Or, better yet, I will tell him myself if I get the chance....That's what friends are for right?" This time, her yawn was too big to be hidden, so she just decided to stretch her arms anyways.

"I am way too tired to even focus on anything we are talking about anymore." Standing up, she looked at Rahne and sleepily smiled, "Thanks for the talk, Rahne. You are just the best!"

"Good night."

"Absolutely," Rahne said with a grin and a nod of her head. A positive attitude was key, really - believe in yourself, believe in your ability to affect the world around you, and you will. The X-Men proved that theory day in and day out - under how many occasions the world was made a better place due to their actions, how many lives were saved, or just made better... if that wasn't proof of believing in your ability to change the world and doing it, she didn't know what was.

"Cartusia in the Bahamas," Rahne said with a sharp nod of her head. "I'll talk to Jamie tomorrow, see if he can dig anything up. Or even if we could. I do enjoy the detective stuff, when he asks it of me. I do love a good adventure, after all."

As Clarice stood up with a stretch and a yawn, Rahne hopped to her feet, knowing full weil what the girl's body language was saying before she said it vocally.

"Well, I dunno about 'the best', but I do try," she said in her typically understated way. She gave the girl a quick hug, and pulled back soon enough.

"Goodnight, Clarice. Sleep well."
